[Bug 390157] Re: [upgrade] New upstream release 0.132

2009-06-21 Thread Cesare Falco
This is the .diff file for the new upstream release - sdlmame 0.132.

To build the source package use

zcat sdlmame_0.132-0ubuntu1.diff.gz | patch -p0
cd sdlmame-0.132
chmod +x debian/rules
debian/rules get-orig-source
mv sdlmame_0.132.orig.tar.gz ../
cd ..
tar xvfz sdlmame_0.132.orig.tar.gz

and the source tree should be in
sdlmame-0.132

Released tagged with a "u" are unstable ones, very similar to beta.
I'm not going to package them as they seldom even break working code.

[Bug 318304] Re: [upgrade] sdlmame new upstream 0.129

2009-02-14 Thread Cesare Falco
Here's some explanation:

> - ARCHOPTS=-march=pentium-mmx \
> + ARCHOPTS=-march=pentium2 \
sdlmame requires fast machines or it runs so slow it's unusable; optimization
for i686 offers some performance improvement (comment put in changelog)

> -Standards-Version: 3.7.3
> +Standards-Version: 3.8.0
prevents lintian from complaining with the following warning:
W: sdlmame source: out-of-date-standards-version 3.7.3 (current is 3.8.0)

> -Architecture: i386 amd64 lpia powerpc
> +Architecture: i386 amd64 powerpc
lpia architecture is not supported upstream (comment put in changelog)

> --- sdlmame-0.128/debian/contrib/manpages/sdlmame.1
> +++ sdlmame-0.129/debian/contrib/manpages/sdlmame.1
> --- sdlmame-0.128/debian/contrib/config/mame.ini

> --- sdlmame-0.129.orig/debian/sdlmame.conffiles
> +++ sdlmame-0.129/debian/sdlmame.conffiles
configuration file "joymap.dat" removed upstream, above are related changes:
manpage: documented new command option; removed reference to joymap.dat
mame.ini: removed reference to joymap.dat
sdlmame.conffiles: removed reference to joymap.dat
(already documented in changelog)

> + if dpkg --compare-versions "$2" lt "0.128u7"; then
> + rm -rf /etc/sdlmame/joymap.dat
> this should only be run on upgrade, not install. No need for -r either.
fixed

Successfully built on my ppa:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~c.falco/+archive/ppa
(I had to rename it 0ubuntu2 to avoid version clash)

Thank you!
Cesare.

[Bug 335440] Re: Update BTPD version to 0.15

Thanks for report.

It seems there's a bug in 0.15 when tracker sends bad data, upstream
maintainers are still looking after it.
I'll update the packages as soon as it is fixed, don't expect it for jaunty
(9.04) however.

[Bug 154231] Re: G550 (dual) DVI does not work

2007-10-27 Thread Cesare Falco
The bug still affects gutsy.

My G550 is an older one with the standard VGA connector as the first
output and the DVI connector (which I use with my Samsung SyncMaster
152T LCD monitor) is the second one. Each time I installed Ubuntu from
scratch or updated it, I ran into same problem: blank screen with
blinking led meaning no input segnal. And yes, the problem is only
solved with the Hal closed source library.

Unfortunately, Matrox stepped back and they no longer directly support the
linux driver for their cards. However, they are still maintained as
"unofficial" ones. Look here: http://matrox.tuxx-home.at/viewtopic.php?t=153
I wonder whether those driver can be included in Ubuntu as restricted ones.

[Bug 157731] Alsa randomly chooses default audio card

2007-10-27 Thread Cesare Falco
Public bug reported:

This bug is very similar to Bug #8107, which is reported as fixed. But
AFAIK it's not the same neither it has been fixed in gutsy.

I have two cards on my PC: the onboard one and a PCI SB Live! and I use
them both: the onboard one for voip, and the SB for all other purposes.
When Alsa starts, it recognises both card, but assigns the primary ID on
a random basis, i.e. sometimes it assumes the pci card is the main one
and sometimes it chooses the onboard card.

The only way I found to solve this is manually editing
/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf, changing the lines
  defaults.ctl.card
  defaults.pcm.card
after looking for the with
$ cat /proc/asound/cards

Unfortunately, you can't post a review unless you are a MOTU reviewer.
This is part of the process which leads to inclusion in the official
repositories (both for universe and multiverse components), to ensure
packages are built "the right way". MOTUs have been really busy during
the last days, due to Gutsy official release. If you wonder who MOTUs
are, look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU for further info.

However, I like to thank you for your feedback! :)

[Bug 158451] [needs-packaging] shorten

2007-10-29 Thread Cesare Falco
Public bug reported:

Shorten is an old audio file loseless compressor. It has a opensource
licence which requires feed payment for professional use, which makes me
not very happy about it. It is however still popular, and I think

[Bug 135879] Re: [needs-packaging] SDLMAME

2007-10-30 Thread Cesare Falco
I own an 1386 machine, I can't build amd64 packages at home, neither I
can test them.

I started uploading sdlmame on my PPA to check correctness of my rules
for amd64, but I'm still considering it some kind of beta release, as I
only had some positive feedbacks from one user. I may assume happy users
are now two at least, right? :)

Also, I could download amd64 packages from my PPA and upload them to the
site, but I have both limited bandwidth at home and space on website. I
considered to host the site on my home server, but that way, each time a
new release is published I wouldn't even read mail, unless limiting
bandwidth to a very low percentage. :o

As for the package names, they may differ for the distro release and
architecture, but I don't understand in what else. Could you please
explain that? If there's some error on the site, I'll be glad to fix it.
:)

Thanks for your help!

[Bug 119412] Re: [needs-packaging] mac

2007-11-01 Thread Cesare Falco
My 2-cent contribution.

After a long thought, I believe it shoud be included in multiverse,
perhaps depending from a meta-package like "media-codec-ugly-
multiverse", in a similar way as the "gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-
multiverse" is done. We should consider that .ape format is quite
popular, and supply the package as a migration tool to the flac format
and clearly deprecate its usage as an audio compressor.

Of course, I feel uncomfortable with the custom so-called opensource
licence, but it's up to the author to decide about it. As he never asked
to remove or stop the mac-port project, I think he can bear with it, so
I see no direct copyright infringiment.

Should distribution become more and more questionable on author's
requests, we could always remove it even from the multiverse repository,
which hosts software for which is user's responsibility to check whether
he has the right to use the software or not.

[Bug 135879] Re: [needs-packaging] SDLMAME

2007-09-24 Thread Cesare Falco
I'm currently packaging SDLMame and first package releases have been in
Revu since March.

Recently, I also become a Launchpad beta tester, and sdlmame is now on my PPA
too:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/c.falco/ubuntu

I'm still waiting for inclusion in the official repository after some
reviews, but I need more of them.

[Bug 190041] Re: [upgrade] sdlmame new upstream 0.123

2008-02-08 Thread Cesare Falco
I know there's trouble with upstream site every now and then, however I
would expect to see sdlmame0123.zip as the file name to be retrieved.
Looks like the $(VER) has the old value. I'm also puzzled with the
warning messages.

It's likely I've done something wrong with the .diff file, I'll check it
ASAP. How did you apply it?

hopefully should make it build on unofficial archs too.

I'm really puzzled as your example seems to work. :|

Just FYI, I sometimes received the "no matching hrefs for watch line"
message, and sometimes not at all. I can't tell how many attempts I
made, with both version mangling and url regexp. I dare say, example
could be more clear. ;)

BTW, unless server configuration has changed, it's obviously my fault so
I apologize for filing a non-existant bug. :(

[Bug 179563] uscan: option --user-agent doesn't work properly

2007-12-31 Thread Cesare Falco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: devscripts

I'm trying to write a watch file for sdlmame, hoste on a web server
requiring the User-Agent header.

Easier to try than to explain:
$ wget -U "Debian uscan" http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/sdlmame0122.zip
works fine, whilst
$ uscan --user-agent "Debian uscan"
does not.

I would also suggest to make --user-agent an opts entry in the debian/watch
file, something like:
opts="useragent=DebianUscan" \
http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/?page_id=163 sdlmame(\d+)\.zip

[Bug 231223] Re: [upgrade] sdlmame new upstream 0.125

2008-06-19 Thread Cesare Falco
I'm sorry, I'm still confused a bit about fix committing process. :(

You should be able to apply the first .diff.gz file commited (the >4mb
one) to the 0.123 source with the same procedure used upgrading 0.122 to
0.123 in hardy:

apt-get source sdlmame
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/14565553/sdlmame_0.125.diff.gz
cd sdlmame-0.123/
zcat ../sdlmame_0.125.diff.gz | patch -p1
debian/rules get-orig-source

(see: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sdlmame/+bug/190041)

If get-orig-source doesn't retrieve sdlmame0125.zip, please try
uscan --user-agent ubuntu
and then run get-orig-source again (it should check .zip presence before trying
to download it).

Also, please... is there some recommended procedure for committing fixes and
upgrades?
Thanks!

2008-06-23 Thread Cesare Falco

Ok, forget about the .diff files posted, I've missed this:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2008-January/024913.html

Here's the .diff.gz I've just used to build sdlmame 0.125 source package with
following commands:
zcat sdlmame_0.125-0ubuntu1.diff.gz | patch -p0
cd sdlmame-0.125
chmod +x debian/rules
debian/rules get-orig-source
mv sdlmame_0.125.orig.tar.gz ../
cd ..
tar xvfz sdlmame_0.125.orig.tar.gz

now you should have the correct source tree in
sdlmame-0.125

[Bug 285204] [NEW] [FeatureFreeze] New upstream: SDLMAME 0.128

exotic platforms

* it's really outdated: 5 (five!) major releases have occured since

* its builds(tm) [2]

* it can't do any arm as it has no dependencies which can be broken

[Bug 231223] Re: [upgrade] sdlmame new upstream 0.127

2008-10-17 Thread Cesare Falco

This is the .diff file for the new upstream release - sdlmame 0.128.

To build the source package use

zcat sdlmame_0.128-0ubuntu1.diff.gz | patch -p0
cd sdlmame-0.128
chmod +x debian/rules
debian/rules get-orig-source
mv sdlmame_0.128.orig.tar.gz ../
cd ..
tar xvfz sdlmame_0.128.orig.tar.gz

and the source tree should be in
sdlmame-0.128

Compiled binaries are available on my PPA as well:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~c.falco/+archive

I also requested a FeatureFreeze exception as suggested:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sdlmame/+bug/285204

Please... *do* upload it! :-)

[Bug 285204] Re: [FeatureFreeze] New upstream: SDLMAME 0.128

2008-10-22 Thread Cesare Falco

- Each new release usually adds previously unsupported games or improves
support for the already emulated ones.

- Mame(TM) has its own bug reporting site (MAMETesters), and each
release fixes a number of them (listed in whastnew.txt)

- At some point since 0.123 a new utility for laserdisc games has been
released (it's in the sdlmame-tools binary) and a deprecated one has
been removed

- Internally, each new release also cleans and improves the code, and
this obviously makes SDLMAME more stable and fast

- Ubuntu-wise, I fixed a couple of packaging bugs

[Bug 275326] Re: error after btpd restart "btcli: cannot open connection"

2008-10-03 Thread Cesare Falco

This is not properly a bug, it's related to how btpd works in Ubuntu
(see /usr/share/doc/btpd/README.Debian).

btpd runs as a system daemon with its own user, you should use the init
script to control it:

sudo /etc/init.d/btpd stop -> kill
sudo /etc/init.d/btpd start -> launch
sudo /etc/init.d/btpd restart -> first kill then launch again

However, I understand this is not very user-friendly. I'm thinking of a
better way to force users to manage the daemon correctly. Any suggestion
is welcome.

Cheers,
Cesare.

[Bug 231223] Re: [upgrade] sdlmame new upstream 0.127

2008-10-17 Thread Cesare Falco

This is the .diff file for the new upstream release - sdlmame 0.128.

To build the source package use

zcat sdlmame_0.128-0ubuntu1.diff.gz | patch -p0
cd sdlmame-0.128
chmod +x debian/rules
debian/rules get-orig-source
mv sdlmame_0.128.orig.tar.gz ../
cd ..
tar xvfz sdlmame_0.128.orig.tar.gz

and the source tree should be in
sdlmame-0.128

Compiled binaries are available on my PPA as well:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~c.falco/+archive

I also requested a FeatureFreeze exception as suggested:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sdlmame/+bug/285204

Please... *do* upload it! :-)

[Bug 285204] Re: [FeatureFreeze] New upstream: SDLMAME 0.128

2008-10-22 Thread Cesare Falco

- Each new release usually adds previously unsupported games or improves
support for the already emulated ones.

- Mame(TM) has its own bug reporting site (MAMETesters), and each
release fixes a number of them (listed in whastnew.txt)

- At some point since 0.123 a new utility for laserdisc games has been
released (it's in the sdlmame-tools binary) and a deprecated one has
been removed

- Internally, each new release also cleans and improves the code, and
this obviously makes SDLMAME more stable and fast

- Ubuntu-wise, I fixed a couple of packaging bugs

[Bug 135879] Re: [needs-packaging] SDLMAME

2007-09-24 Thread Cesare Falco
I'm currently packaging SDLMame and first package releases have been in
Revu since March.

Recently, I also become a Launchpad beta tester, and sdlmame is now on my PPA
too:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/c.falco/ubuntu

I'm still waiting for inclusion in the official repository after some
reviews, but I need more of them.

/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf, changing the lines
  defaults.ctl.card
  defaults.pcm.card
after looking for the with
$ cat /proc/asound/cards

[Bug 135879] Re: [needs-packaging] SDLMAME

2007-10-27 Thread Cesare Falco
Unfortunately, you can't post a review unless you are a MOTU reviewer.
This is part of the process which leads to inclusion in the official
repositories (both for universe and multiverse components), to ensure
packages are built "the right way". MOTUs have been really busy during
the last days, due to Gutsy official release. If you wonder who MOTUs
are, look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU for further info.

However, I like to thank you for your feedback! :)

[Bug 179563] uscan: option --user-agent doesn't work properly

2007-12-31 Thread Cesare Falco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: devscripts

I'm trying to write a watch file for sdlmame, hoste on a web server
requiring the User-Agent header.

Easier to try than to explain:
$ wget -U "Debian uscan" http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/sdlmame0122.zip
works fine, whilst
$ uscan --user-agent "Debian uscan"
does not.

I would also suggest to make --user-agent an opts entry in the debian/watch
file, something like:
opts="useragent=DebianUscan" \
http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/?page_id=163 sdlmame(\d+)\.zip

[Bug 158451] [needs-packaging] shorten

2007-10-29 Thread Cesare Falco
Public bug reported:

Shorten is an old audio file loseless compressor. It has a opensource
licence which requires feed payment for professional use, which makes me
not very happy about it. It is however still popular, and I think
inclusion in the universe repository could help people convert their
.shn files to flac. See homepage: http://etree.org/shnutils/shorten/

You can find them either
* on my PPA: https://edge.launchpad.net/~c.falco/+archive
* on REVU: http://revu.tauware.de/details.py?package=sdlmame

Ehm... well... you can also download them from the link you mentioned as I *am*
wallyweek... :)
I must admit the site is quite ugly, but I have no time to make it shine, with
a breathless release cycle as sdlmame one. But packages are the same.

Feel free to make any suggestion about them.
