[Bug 748293] Re: Cannot invoke continuation mode for window resize

2012-04-25 Thread Chad A. Davis
I'm not able to reproduce the issue that I originally reported if using
Precise. If there are no other comments, please close the bug.

[Bug 745960] Re: Cannot boot GRUB on Intel Mac after installing to LVM

2012-04-19 Thread Chad A. Davis
My original report was on a Mac. I was able to reproduce the issue
consistently at that time. I was never able to reproduce the issue on a
x86 VM. I don't believe a test on an x86 VM answers the question here. I
would leave this incomplete until someone has time to test this on real
hardware, preferably some type of hardware that previously had the
problem, or at least something that uses GPT.

[Bug 53062] Re: [needs-packaging] mysql workbench package request

2012-03-30 Thread Chad A. Davis
Note that the deb provided for download on the MySQL site is linked
against libzip1 because it was built for natty whereas precise now
provides only libzip2. In other words, the package provided by MySQL no
longer works out of the box on Ubuntu.

In the meantime, the simple (and risky) workaround:
sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/libzip.so.2 /usr/lib/libzip.so.1
sudo dpkg --force-depends -i ./mysql-workbench-gpl-5.2.38-1ubu1104-amd64.deb

[Bug 872405] Re: Swap partition smaller than RAM (entire disk install)

2011-10-17 Thread Chad A. Davis
It's a bug because it's done that way on every other Ubuntu flavor, on the same
machine. There is a clear and obvious pattern and one of them is doing
something different and unpredictable.
I also personally am not a fan of swap, but the installer still creates it by
default. I imagine this is partly because hibernation is disabled otherwise.

[Bug 856826] Re: 'guided resize' partioning leaves Mac unbootable

2011-10-12 Thread Chad A. Davis
Seems to also occur when doing an in-place upgrade (from Oneiric to
Oneiric).

I started from a working Oneiric system (from ubuntu-oneiric-desktop-
amd64+mac.iso from 2011-10-11) which was installed with guided: entire
disk partitioning (i.e. using ext4).

I booted ubuntu-oneiric-desktop-amd64+mac.iso from 2011-10-12 and chose
the upgrade option.

It's not clear if the cause is the same, but the symptoms (that the
installed system does not boot) are the same. The installation appeared
to finish normally.

[Bug 855871] Re: Grub install fails after manual xfs partitioning

2011-10-11 Thread Chad A. Davis
If I re-install over a system that was installed using 'guided: entire
disk' partitioning and simply re-format the ext4 root partition as an
xfs partition, the grub installation error does not re-occur.

The system still fails to boot, however, which seems to be a different
bug (bug 856763).

[Bug 872405] [NEW] Swap partition smaller than RAM (entire disk install)

2011-10-11 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

Installing kubuntu-oneiric-desktop-amd64+mac.iso (2011-10-11) with
'guided: entire disk' partitioning, a swap partition of 2GB is created,
despite the machine having 4GB of RAM. This is a MacBookPro6,2.

This is unique from bug 760336, which refers to the debian-installer and
has limited disk space. Here the machine has a 298GB disk. The ext4 root
partition occupies 296GB, the bios_grub partition occupies about 1MB.

[Bug 871936] [NEW] Live session switches to VT console [nvidia]

2011-10-10 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

After booting the live CD and selecting Try Ubuntu I am switched to a
console while the X server is restarted, it contains many boot messages
that are not of interest to the end-user. As far as I understand, the X
server has to be restarted, but as mentioned in bug 813065, the console
should probably be cleared first to provide a smoother end-user
experience.

Whereas bug 813065 is specific to Intel video cards, and appears fixed,
this bug here is specific to Nvidia video cards.

[Bug 856763] Re: Mac cannot boot from reiserfs

2011-09-28 Thread Chad A. Davis
Also, when I do try to manually create the efi partition (in case it's
not automatically created) I get:

The efi file system creation in partition #3 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda)
failed.

In this case I tried to create an xfs filesystem, rather than a
reiserfs, but the failure occurred while trying to create the efi
partition. So, I believe that it belongs in this bug report.

I will attach these new logs as well.

** Summary changed:

- Mac cannot boot from reiserfs

[Bug 855871] Re: Grub install fails after manual xfs partitioning

2011-09-28 Thread Chad A. Davis
That's interesting, because it is not necessary to create any additional
partition when I do manual partitioning with an ext4 filesystem. I've
posted some install logs about that in bug 856763 .

I still believe this bug here to be unique because it causes grub to
fail to install, which does not occur e.g. with reiserfs.

The partition table looks empty. I'm attaching sfdisk output, as well as
the installer logs again (syslog, partman, installer/debug).

For the latest install, I'm using ubuntu-oneiric-desktop-amd64+mac.iso
from 2011-09-22

[Bug 745960] Re: Cannot boot grub after installing to LVM

2011-09-28 Thread Chad A. Davis
My original report was on a MacBookPro. I'm not sure if the RAID reports
are related. I also tested in a VM, without problems, whether the LVM
was encrypted or not. The problem occurred only on the Mac, both
encrypted and not encrypted, when using LVM. I used the default: entire-
disk. I did not opt to encrypt the home directory. The symtoms are the
same on Oneirc as they were on Natty.

I'm attaching the files you requested. This install is from the daily
ISO ubuntu-oneiric-alternate-amd64+mac.iso from 2011-09-20 .

[Bug 856188] [NEW] debian-installer creates swap smaller than RAM size (GPT)

2011-09-22 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

Expected: swap partition to be around 4GB (corresponding to RAM)
Actual: swap partition is around 2.2 GB

I used the Guided - Entire disk install option, which for the ubiquity
installer creates the swap as the same size as the RAM. Cannot tell yet
if this may be GPT-specific, but I will test some other ISOs ...

[Bug 855871] Re: Grub install fails after manual xfs partitioning

2011-09-22 Thread Chad A. Davis
In another installation, also with xfs, I left a 1-2 GB unpartitioned
space at the beginning of the disk (plenty of space for the bios_grub
partition), but grub again failed.

In another installation, I also tried the same patition layout as the
original bug report (first 4GB swap, 1-2 GB unpartitioned, ~300 GB root
partition) with ext4 rather than xfs and the bios_grub partition was
created correctly and the system boots as expected.

I'm trying to narrow down whether the problem occurs due to deciding
where the bios_grub partition gets placed, but it seems to only occur
with xfs.

[Bug 856763] [NEW] Mac cannot boot from reiserfs

2011-09-22 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

I performed manual partitioning. In addition to a swap partition and the
reiserfs partition, I left several megabytes free at the beginning of
the disk for the GPT/bios_grub partition (the approach works fine for
ext4 partitions). The installation proceeds without error. On reboot the
Mac Folder with question mark icon is shown (meaning no bootable
partitions found).

[Bug 856826] [NEW] d-i 'guided resize' partioning leaves Mac unbootable

2011-09-22 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

After installing with ubuntu-oneiric-alternate-amd64+mac.iso (ISO from
2011-09-21) this MacBookPro6,2 is not bootable. I used the 'guided
resize' partitioning option to split an existing ext4 partition to make
space. The original system was working fine and the resulting partition
table, after the install, looks reasonable (two ext4 partitions, two
swap parititons, and a bios_grub partition).

This would appear to be a regression. If I remember rightly, this worked
correctly in Oneiric once before.

Seems to be a duplicate of bug 645449 (reported on Maverick)

At least the symptoms are the same: the two frames in the keyboard

advancing the dialog.

[Bug 855871] [NEW] Grub install fails after manual xfs partitioning

2011-09-21 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

I chose the manual partitioning option.
I first created a new partition table.
Then I created a 5 GB swap at the beginning of the disk (RAM is 4GB)
I left a 1 GB gap in the middle of the disk, unpartitioned, to not use up the
entire disk.
Then I created a 300-something GB XFS partition at the end of the disk.

Installation continues until grub tries to install and fails. Grub says
that it has failed. I opted to continue without installing the
bootloader. Upon finishing the installation, ubiquity also crashed,
which is what this apport report caught. The real problem appears to be
with grub/partman though.

[Bug 855042] [NEW] ubiquity hangs while jockey-text at 100% CPU

2011-09-20 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

Expected: Installer to complete installing base system.
Actual: Ubiquity hangs toward the end of the install.

'top' shows jockey-text at 100% CPU usage. Tailing the logs doesn't
provide any insight. Will try this again with ubiquity in debug mode ...

This is ubuntu-oneiric-desktop-amd64+mac.iso on a MacBookPro6,2

The installer is running in German, but that may not be relevant.

Running
  sudo killall jockey-text
allows the installation to continue to completion. The system is bootable and
usable after that.

[Bug 855042] Re: ubiquity hangs while jockey-text at 100% CPU

2011-09-20 Thread Chad A. Davis
Looking at the syslog it may be relevant, that this is a German installation.
I see:

Sep 20 23:07:17 ubuntu ubiquity: Bitte 'j' oder 'n' eingeben und Enter drücken
Sep 20 21:07:18 ubiquity: last message repeated 78 times

Maybe someone somewhere is passing a non-localized 'y' for 'yes' and
someone else is expecting a localized 'j' (Ja for yes). Attaching syslog
and debug log from ubiquity. This should have more info that the
previous logs.

[Bug 837681] Re: Automatic partitioning corrupts GUID partition table (GPT)

2011-09-01 Thread Chad A. Davis
For the record, running gptsync from a live CD won't rescue this
situation because it doesn't understand the partition table and refuses
to modify it.

Status: Analysis inconclusive, will not touch this disk.

[Bug 838676] [NEW] [installer] Choos a picture screen too narrow

2011-09-01 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

The new (in Oneiric) Choose a picture screen from the installer shows
a live preview from the webcam as well as some pre-defined icons lined
up on a grid.

Expected: Either two columns of icons with less white space around them, or
three columns of icons.
Actual: Appears that the three columns of icons didn't quite fit. Instead I see
two columns with a huge amount of white space.

Screen shot attached.

Fix confirmed for parted-2.3-6ubuntu2
Thanks for asking, Colin, but this is just a test machine, made for breaking.
Just wanted to try gptsync.
And thanks for the quick fix.

Re: [Bug 838676] Re: [installer] Choos a picture screen too narrow

2011-09-01 Thread Chad A. Davis
The bug isn't that it needs to have three columns, the bug is that it
looks like it's trying to have three columns. I.e. the excessive white
space makes it look like something in the layout is broken. Just
increasing the padding between the columns would probably be
sufficient.

On Thu, Sep 1, 2011 at 12:24, Evan Dandrea evan.dand...@canonical.com wrote:
There simply is not enough space for this, even with removing the
padding between the camera preview and the scrolled window of icons.
