Ahh, this issue has been driving me crazy since I did the 14.04 upgrade. I'm using ubuntu 14.04 + xfce4 + plex connected to my yamaha receiver and panasonic hdtv (with pulse-eight cec usb dongle). (setup is years old). The procedure above (#22) did the trick for me. [Bug 53557] libavcodec.pc missing libs
Public bug reported: It seems that libavcodec is built against gsm and vorbis libraries, but the pkg-config specification (libavcodec.pc) does not include the relevant libraries.This causes a linker error when linking against libavcodec.
