[Bug 1453299] Re: Screen doesn't turn on after suspend

2015-07-06 Thread Charles Ford
sorry, turns out the fresh install just shut off the screen when I
closed the lid, the suspend still doesn't work.

[Bug 1453299] Re: Screen doesn't turn on after suspend

2015-06-28 Thread Charles Ford
Okay, fresh install of 15.04 xubuntu - right now things are working as
they should. Some update knocked out my broadcom drivers and I couldn't
work my way out of it. I'll re-update if the suspend issue reappears.

[Bug 1453299] Re: Screen doesn't turn on after suspend

2015-06-11 Thread Charles Ford
Is there anything additional I should do for testing? (besides being
delighted when my screen comes back from suspend?) I'm doing great with
the 4.1.0-040100rc7 upstream kernel. I made the changes to the bug
report as requested.

Re: [Bug 1172371] Re: Dell Inspiron 9300 kernel panic

2013-07-31 Thread Charles Ford
On the weekend I can put an install of Ubuntu back on it - running
Crunchbang right now and it's not my main laptop. It does have the current
BIOS on it (A05) and I've got several pictures of the kernel panics I've
had on it that I took with my phone, if you're interested. (just wanted to
let you know I didn't ignore the message)

 Charles Ford, as per

an update is available for your BIOS (A05). If you update to this, does
 it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the
output of the following terminal command:
 sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

 Thank you for your understanding.

Re: [Bug 1175875] Re: Saucy: unable to boot - plymouth has no boot screen but purple showed up

2013-05-28 Thread Charles Ford
Sorry, thus got buried in my email.

Booting after hitting a key was with the quiet and splash options.

Also after hitting a key and changing the parameters to live-nosplash, I
got the desktop as well.

It seems that the menu just needs a key pressed to start it?

I'm afraid that doesn't answer the question. Did you boot with or without
the 'quiet' and 'splash' options? Did you see text scrolling by at boot
 time, or not?

According to this:

go to a terminal and type:

dconf write /org/gnome/settings-daemon/peripherals/touchpad/horiz-scroll-enabled

it works for me, anyways. (found as an answer on the ubuntuforums)

that case? Or do you get a wall of text? If you wait a few minutes, do
you eventually get a graphical screen (without first seeing a splash)?
If you wait the same amount of time with a normal boot, do you see the
 same graphical screen?

2013-04-25 Thread Charles Ford
Still happens with the final. Lubuntu doesn't do this, for comparison
purposes.

This is the first one, booting without any parameters.

 Hi Charles,

We've recently been seeing a number of bugs where Compiz is crashing
(bug #1166765), which exhibits this behavior. In those cases, it seems
the Nvidia binary drivers are being used. However, in this bug, it's
not clear which gfx card is being used.

Could you provide which gfx card is being used in your case? I'd like
get a bit more info before dup'ing to the aforementioned bug.

 Thanks!

idea of the state of my memory. Does this mean that the kernel panic is

[Bug 1165985] Re: 13.04 - kernel panic - unable to handle kernel paging request ffffffec -- Dell Inspiron 9300

2013-04-09 Thread Charles Ford
Okay, just had a new kernel panic with the upstream. It doesn't have the
BUG: prefix, I think it's much longer than the other one I transcribed.

it does say [21492:955654] WARNING: at
/home/apw/COD/linux/drivers/gpu/drm/drm_crtc.c:84
drm_warn_on_modeset_not_all_locked+0x62/0x70 [drm]()

I'm gonna hop on IRC to see what's most useful to transcribe from the
kernel panic, because it's quite a task.

[Bug 1164788] Re: 13.04 kernel panic: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffffec

2013-04-08 Thread Charles Ford
Okay, scratch that, I must have bonked something in the install before,
either way, I'm running strong now on the upstream.

Also, I installed the newest daily (as of ... the fifth I think?) at the
time, and regular Ubuntu not the Ubuntu-gnome flavor. So when I had
another ffec kernel panic I reported it in a different bug. ALSO I
had previously had a different kernel panic as well, of which I fully
transcribed.

Anyways, I'll let it sit on the carpet off the AC a bunch tomorrow to
see if I can cause a kernel panic or not. I have a feeling it's
connected to battery power overheating stuff. Nothing conclusive though.

[Bug 1165985] Re: 13.04 - kernel panic - unable to handle kernel paging request ffffffec -- Dell Inspiron 9300

2013-04-08 Thread Charles Ford
Yep, it could - it just hadn't done that with 12.10 so it made me think
something was up.

btw this is the same:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1158069 - I didn't
know it was a kernel panic at the time I reported it.

[Bug 1166586] [NEW] Xorg + Unity broken in PPC Live cd

2013-04-08 Thread Charles Ford
Public bug reported:

Booting without any extra parameters gets the general strange
colors+pseudo 8 bit problem.

So I tried the old standby, booting with live
video=radeonfb:1024x768-32@60 which will usually get something running.
This got me a black screen that had popup notifications (Ubuntu 13.04
had a critical error, and network not connected). So I ctl-alt-F2'd into
terminal, and ran ubuntu-bug, copied the URL for this, and then startx.
Startx got me to a desktop background, with the desktop icons on it
(install ubuntu and some information folder). I've got no Unity
interface, no window stuff, but through the folder I was able to find
xterm, and do what I need to do so I can make the bug report. The colors
are good at least!

[Bug 1165684] [NEW] Dell Inspiron 9300- kernel panic - unable to handle kernel paging request at 0498efff

2013-04-07 Thread Charles Ford
Public bug reported:

Unknown cause of kernel panic, which has plauged my Inspiron 9300 since
I started testing 13.04 on it. Anyway, this time I was able to type it
all out on another laptop (see attached). The kernel error number is
different, though.

I'm going to look into trying the upstream kernel again as mentioned in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1164788 , and if I
can find a walkaround for the hardware I'll test it out.

The caps lock light and num lock light were both blinking in sync with
each other during the kernel panic, which I haven't noticed with other
kernel panics.

Also, it seems that I'm more likely to get a kernel panic on battery
power, and while not using the desk, even though my fans are not
obstructed while on the couch.

there may be some slight errors in the kernel panic output BECAUSE I
hand copied it using another computer

Public bug reported:

I had a popup window about Ubuntu 13.04 experiencing an error, clicked
report, and then apport said that I was viewing the bug in my browser
when I definitely wasn't (but I was on the launchpad website).

[Bug 1165985] [NEW] 13.04 - kernel panic - unable to handle kernel paging request ffffffec -- Dell Inspiron 9300

2013-04-07 Thread Charles Ford
Public bug reported:

The same kernel panic that I had before
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1164788)

This is a new daily build though, so I'm reporting a new bug.

I'm thinking it's a fan issue - overheating, though not while on AC power. If I
unplug it and let it sit on carpet, the fans won't go high, but it's quite
likely that it'll throw this kernel panic out.

I'll get the upstream kernel installed in a moment and see if it duplicates.

[Bug 1165457] [NEW] screen corrupts - 13.04 daily build - unknown reason

2013-04-06 Thread Charles Ford
Public bug reported:

I was running USB tests when it first happened, and then unity crashed
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1161916)

Then it happened again without unity crashing, and then again (unless
it's all releated).

I don't have a working camera at this time, but the screen turned into a
series of horizontal lines, that would scroll up and down with the arrow
keys (I'm assuming it was the webpage I was on) but wouldn't scroll with
the mouse. The mouse pointer looked the same.

[Bug 1164788] Re: 13.04 kernel panic: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffffec

2013-04-05 Thread Charles Ford
upstream is installed. No kernel panic yet but it's been five minutes or
so. However, the external mouse that I had for it (wireless usb) doesn't
work, and I'm no longer seeing any of my network hardware.

[Bug 1162692] Re: Failed removal of gnome desktop environment - plymouth error

2013-04-03 Thread Charles Ford
I used synaptic to install gnome I think, because I didn't know the
actual name of it (I kept trying gdm, gnome-desktop, etc), but I used
the commandline to uninstall. apt-get uninstall gnome.

I looked through synaptic and searched login and did ubuntu-bug login
for the unable to log in error. I'll file a report in gnome too. It's
sure to belong somewhere.

[Bug 1163644] [NEW] Login screen does not work; must log in via terminal and then startx

2013-04-02 Thread Charles Ford
Public bug reported:

I was running lubuntu 13.04 and wanted to see how gnome worked on my

[Bug 1158069] Re: Screen suddenly blanked with text output - similar to standby without doing anything

2013-03-23 Thread Charles Ford
It just happened again. I'll be attaching pictures. I had 2 usb drives
plugged in, if I remember, there was a USB drive plugged in the other
time, too.

Is there a specific place that this output might be accessed? If not,
I'll try and reconstruct what it says through the images.

the window, but that didn't work. So I'm trying combinations of packages
and window resizing. I know it's not choosing specific packages, because
it has crashed no matter which packages are selected.

This time it crashed while displaying the dependencies needed to install
a certain package.
