[Bug 990260] Re: Latest kernel makes Sentelic touchpad misbehave

2012-04-28 Thread Chris D
The attached archive contains versions of sentelic.c and sentelic.h that
are drop-in replacements for the versions provided in the standard
kernel. This version of the driver, for me at least, works far better
than the one currently in teh standard kernel. I have attempted to
reduce the delta between my version and the standard one as much as
possible, however the core packet processing and initialisation routines
are too different to be reconciled easily. I'm not sure where Ubuntu's
version of the driver came from, but it seems to have been substantially
rewritten from the version I obtained from saaros/sentelic on githut a
few months ago.

[Bug 990260] Re: Latest kernel makes Sentelic touchpad misbehave

2012-04-27 Thread Chris D
I have a version of the driver that works perfectly, however the delta
between my sentelic.c and the one in the linux-source-3.2.0 package is
quite large, as it's not based on the in-tree version of the Sentelic
driver. That said I'd be willing trying to merge the two together if it
seems worthwhile.

[Bug 990260] [NEW] Latest kernel makes Sentelic touchpad misbehave

2012-04-27 Thread Chris D
Public bug reported:

The latest kernel update in 12.04 brought with it a backported driver
for Sentelic touchpads. However, this driver is causing extremely
erratic behaviour. Particularly, two-finger scrolling causes web
pages/etc to jump around eratically. Two-finger tap to right click is
also not working.

[Bug 844730] Re: Unity Dash is very slow with the OSS ATI driver

2012-04-26 Thread Chris D
I had this same problem (HD5770 using OSS drivers). I found that if I
disable the Workarounds plugin in CCSM, the lag completely disappeared.
I highly recommend this as a possible workaround. Obviously you'd need
to check that you don't have any applications that are 'debugged' by the
Workarounds plugin. However, in 3 days of use I have yet to find any.

[Bug 889193] Re: gnome control center is missing the option 'dim brightness when on battery'

2012-04-14 Thread Chris D
What is the status of this? I've tried asking on the GNOME mailing list
and got zero reaction. Dimming the display on battery is a fundamental
power management feature and needs to be added back in with a patch if
the GNOME team doesn't deem this worth while. I offer my own time to
develop this patch if necessary, let's just get it done.

[Bug 937378] Re: Patched kernel with rc6 enabled shutdowns

The last two kernel releases in Precise have somehow re-introduced this
issue for me. After many weeks of excellent stability with zero sudden

particularly frequently when unplugging the AC power while the machine

Currently I am running kernel 3.2.0-22-35 with boot parameters

[Bug 311869] Re: Add driver for Sentelic Touch pad

2011-12-27 Thread Chris D
It's interesting that Sentelic's engineer said that. I am finding that
in absolute mode the touchpad is not very accurate and a bid jittery -
not so in relative mode. Perhaps this is symptomatic of what he is
describing.

I'm not aware of any roadmap - my first goal was just to get absolute
mode working with two finger scrolling, which I consider the absolute
minimum to make it usable. My test hardware is currently out of the
country so I won't be able to do much on this for the next 2 weeks until
it comes back.

My changes were mainly to get things working on kernel 3.0. I haven't
tested against 3.2, but Oskari's original version didn't work for me on
3.0. I took a look at the Elantech driver source to get some ideas on
how to make it work - this appears to have paid off. My next step was to
fix the two finger scrolling as the left and right finger packets arrive
separately (same as the Elantech).

[Bug 311869] Re: Add driver for Sentelic Touch pad

2011-12-21 Thread Chris D
Thanks for your fantastic work Oskari! You beat me to it - I was getting
close to getting absolute positioning working but hadn't worked out the
correct registers yet.

I applied your changes to the stock Oneiric kernel. Scrolling works as
you stated, however cursor movement is jumpy to the point of being
unusable. I compiled the driver with debug output enabled, and it looks
like the driver is receiving a smooth stream of absolute packets from
the hardware. It reports >50 packets per second and the timestamps look
right as well. But the way the cursor behaves it seems like only about
1-3 packets per second are actually being received by X. Please let me
know if you need any other debug information.

If your card is a Leadtek PCI TV tuner card which uses a CX2388x/XC4000

I've tested this on a DTV2000H Plus and it works perfectly (for DTV, not

2009-11-29 Thread Chris D
I just ran Karmic on the system I had problems with, and it ran just
fine. There is a little bit of sluggishness in some Compiz animations,
mainly around events that involve mapping a window (open, unminimize,
etc). Otherwise, it seems quite good. I have no idea how this is
possible, the only thing I can think of is that the least time I
installed the RC and then updated after the release, and this time I
used a clean install of the final release version.

gxlgears may well not be a good benchmark, but the performance HAS
dropped significantly. Just compare 9.10 to 8.10, they are lightyears
apart in responsiveness. I'm going to run the prescribed Phoronix
benchmarks and report back here - it is unacceptable for this kind of
performance issue to go ignored. Karmic is AFAIC unusable because of
this.

[Bug 210905] Re: not push-to-talk - xevie problem

2009-07-07 Thread Chris D
Hah! Good luck. The alternative WAS the X Record extension, but that is
now also broken! The only remaining method is reading events from the
EvDev devices under /dev/input, but even this only works about 80% of
the time. I'm getting pretty cynical about the Xorg developers attitude
to accessible technology, ripping out features that existing
applications in the ecosystem rely on. How are we going to encourage
developers to build applications for Linux when we pull out the
foundations from under their code on a regular basis. Well?

[Bug 315456] [NEW] Record extension not sending events

2009-01-09 Thread Chris D
Public bug reported:

The Record extension appears to be broken somehow - it is not sending
any events to Record clients (particularly XKeyPress, XKeyRelease and
XButtonPress events). I am using the python-xlib library for my
application. This library does not appear to have changed between
Intrepid and Jaunty, and while Record works perfectly in Intrepid, in
Jaunty it is broken as described. The relevant module from my
application is attached.

[Bug 222588] [NEW] usb port will not run mouse in hardy

2008-04-26 Thread Chris D
Public bug reported:

I am using a Sony Vaio VGN-N250E laptop, running Gutsy Gibbon until 2
days ago.

Upon trying the live CD for 8.04 LTS my usb microsoft optical mouse
stopped working properly in it's usb port (i would always plug it into
the rearmost of the two usb ports). It started lagging behind the actual
mouse movements so as to become unusable, without any change to the
touch pad.

I installed 8.04 in spite of this error and then my mouse quit
altogether. but only on that rearmost port, upon moving it to the
forward port there have been no problems, and i have since used the
rearmost port for a flash drive and an ipod without any difficulties.

I am having no trouble working around this bug, but I thought I should
point it out.

I did not see an existing bug report with these symptoms, hopefully I
didn't miss an existing report.

Please let me know of there are any logs etc. that i can post to assist
if someone would like more info.

[Bug 191137] Re: [Hardy] ACPI Embedded Controller (EC) stops boot when kernel boot 'quiet' option is enabled or AC power is connected

2008-04-26 Thread Chris D
I can confirm this bug in the 8.04 LTS release on my Sony Vaio VGN-
N250E. But removing the 'quiet splash' from the kernel line in
/boot/grob/menu.lst seems to have solved the problem for now. thanks a
bunch!
