** Description changed: The default Linux keyboard repeat rate is set about as fast as it can be (in terms of the timeouts it will respect). [Bug 1206746] Re: ptrace shows esi mutation across pread64 and pwrite64 syscalls
I should add one more but on information: the pwrite64_testcase.c includes three statements for executing the pwrite64 syscall #if 0 nr = pwrite(fd, content, sizeof(content), 10); nr = syscall(SYS_pwrite64, fd, content, sizeof(content), 10, 0); #endif __asm__ __volatile__("int $0x80" : "=a"(nr) : "0"(SYS_pwrite64), "b"(fd), "c"(content), "d"(sizeof(content)), "S"(10), "D"(0)); The same result is seen with all three calls. The first two should end up using the |systenter| entry point in the VDSO. The third uses the old-fashioned entry point. So the bug manifests across both the systenter/int entry points. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1206746 Title: ptrace shows esi mutation across pread64 and pwrite64 syscalls To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-quantal/+bug/1206746/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1206746] [NEW] ptrace shows esi mutation across pread64 and pwrite64 syscalls
Public bug reported: NB: filing this kernel bug against Canonical because the 3.5.0 kernel isn't officially suported upstream [1]. == Steps to reproduce == 0. Follow these steps on an *x86* installation; *not* x86-64. 1. Download the first attachment "Small test case ..." as pwrite64_testcase.c 2. Download the second attachment "ptrace tracer ..." as regtrace.c 3. Compile both files $ gcc -g -o pwrite64_testcase pwrite64_testcase.c $ gcc -g -o regtrace regtrace.c 4. Verify the files were compiled correctly $ file regtrace You should see output like regtrace: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386... 5. Run the command $ ./regtrace ./pwrite64_testcase | grep -A1 181: == Expected behavior == Step (5) above should print output that looks something like 181: eax:0xffda ebx:0x3 ecx:0xff9cde0f edx:0x19 [-->]esi:0xa edi:0x0 ebp:0xff9cde48 eip:0x80486f5 181: eax:0x19 ebx:0x3 ecx:0xff9cde0f edx:0x19 [-->]esi:0xa edi:0x0 ebp:0xff9cde48 eip:0x80486f5 Notice the "esi:..." values, marked with "[-->]", are both "0xa" in both the entry and exit trace line. == Actual behavior == Step (5) produces output that looks like 181: eax:0xffda ebx:0x4 ecx:0xb60a edx:0x19 [-->]esi:0xa edi:0x0 ebp:0xb658 eip:0x80488c5 181: eax:0x19 ebx:0x4 ecx:0xb60a edx:0x19 [-->]esi:0x23 edi:0x0 ebp:0xb658 eip:0x80488c5 Notice that the "esi:..." values are *NOT* the same: in the entry trace line, esi is "0xa" (the correct value). But in the exit trace line, esi is "0x23" (INCORRECT). == Brief description == The regtrace.c program dumps its tracee's registers at all syscall entry and exits. Per the kernel ABI, all register values *except* eax (return value) are preserved across syscall entry/exit. The pwrite64_testcase.c program uses the pwrite64 and pread64 syscalls in a very basic manner. The symptom is that the regtrace program seems to show a violation of the kernel ABI, as described above: the esi value (as reported by ptrace) changes across syscall entry/exit. This could either be a ptrace bug, or a bug somewhere else in the kernel, but to userspace the symptom looks the same. Three kernel builds were tested. Interestingly, the kernel only appears in an x86 kernel. * x86, 3.5.0-36: *SHOWS* the bug * x86-64, 3.5.0-36: does *NOT* show the bug * x86-64, 3.9.11: does *NOT* show the bug If it helps clarify the nature of the bug, here's a patch that was landed to work around it https://github.com/mozilla/rr/commit/0d585a0242d8771b7830621ff82abf75976b743b == System and package information == $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS Release:12.04 $ apt-cache policy linux-image-3.5.0-36-generic linux-image-3.5.0-36-generic: Installed: 3.5.0-36.57~precise1 Candidate: 3.5.0-36.57~precise1 Version table: *** 3.5.0-36.57~precise1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status $ cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 42 model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz [1] https://www.kernel.org/ ** Affects: linux-lts-quantal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "Small test case that invokes pwrite64 and pread64" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1206746/+attachment/3755389/+files/pwrite64_testcase.c -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1206746 Title: ptrace shows esi mutation across pread64 and pwrite64 syscalls To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-quantal/+bug/1206746/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1178115] Re: nomodeset is needed on server environments for ILO to be usable
fwiw this is not iLO specific, any hardware which is intercepting text mode consoles for out of band administration, will be affected. my anecdotal experience suggests that server people care deeply about remote console access and end up working around this either by disabling KMS, or by configuring grub/linux/getty to talk to a serial port. If we can fix things so the experience out of the box is awesome, that would be fantastic. I don't think this can be a Terminator bug, we aren't doing anything special when we are maximised. [Bug 1020902] [NEW] ecryptfs may truncate encrypted passphrase store
Public bug reported: The following scenario leads to a zero byte encrypted passphrase store and therefore likely considerable dataloss: * Disk runs out of space which causes weird login screen behaviour * User changes their password with passwd(1) so they can hand the laptop to a support engineer and go to a meeting * ecryptfs has somehow truncated the encrypted passphrase store and now it is impossible to complete ecryptfs-mount-private without the recorded key, which many users will not have I would suggest that ecryptfs write out the encrypted passphrase to a new file and then move it in place, this should separate the act of writing from the act of replacing, so the first step will fail and at least the user will have the passphrase encrypted with their old password. This is sub-optimal, but easier to recover from than a truncated file! [Bug 837946] Re: Lucid cannot boot from filesystems with multiple signatures
While it is perhaps the case (as is argued in 428318) that blkid cannot be expected to be omniscient and choose the correct signature, the reality is that this is a regression in functionality and telling people to reformat is not really very good. Perhaps it would therefore be useful for do-release-upgrade to perform a quick test to see if the mounted filesystems have ambivalent results with a new blkid and if so either refuse to upgrade until the user has fixed the situation, or if we have a high degree of trust in the tools, remove the signatures which don't match the filesystem type which the partition is actually mounted as. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/837946 Title: Lucid cannot boot from filesystems with multiple signatures To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/837946/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 671347] [NEW] notify user when transactions complete
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: software-center I think it would be useful if the package daemon would notify the user that package transactions have been completed, at the conceptual level of the task they asked for - e.g. after installing all the monsterous dependencies of Java, it would simply notify "Eclipse has been installed" with the app's icon. It could be argued that for short transactions, particularly where the user still has Software Centre open/focussed, this could be annoying. [Bug 671345] [NEW] search bar should search all sections
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: software-center I contend that the search box should search available and installed software on every search performed. My reasoning is that the location of the search box doesn't immediately indicate that the search applies only to the section the user is in. (I am filing this because I just observed a user try to search for Banshee while in the "Installed Software" section and get confused/angry that Banshee wasn't available). I realise the reality of things is hinted by the breadcrumb bar when the results pane appears, but I think we could be being more helpful here. The section the user is in could appear first in the search results, with other sections appearing shortly afterwards. As it is, right now we just return a big empty white box and confuse the user :) (I considered the option of only searching other sections if the current one returned no results, but I think this would be unpredictable and inconsistent from a user perspective). ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 Package: software-center 3.0.5 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-22.35-generic 2.6.35.4 Uname: Linux 2.6.35-22-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia wl Architecture: amd64 Date: Fri Nov 5 10:01:48 2010 EcryptfsInUse: Yes InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release amd64 (20100429) PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_GB.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: software-center ** Affects: software-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug maverick ubuntu-une -- search bar should search all sections https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/671345 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 663920] [NEW] public IPs unroutable from instances
Public bug reported: Obviously the public IPs are not allocated to the instances directly, but are mapped via NAT on a controller. I don't appear to be able to talk to the public IP mapped to an instance from the instance itself.
