[Bug 1873746] Re: kmail in Kubuntu 20.04 beta cannot connect to dovecot IMAP server

2020-04-26 Thread Chris Samuel
The solution (for me) was to modify /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf after the line:

oid_section = new_oids

by adding:

openssl_conf = default_conf

[default_conf]
ssl_conf = ssl_sect

[ssl_sect]
system_default = system_default_sect

[system_default_sect]
MinProtocol = TLSv1.2
CipherString = DEFAULT@SECLEVEL=1

This is obviously not a Kubuntu or KDE bug so I'll close this now.

** Changed in: kdepim (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1873746] Re: kmail in Kubuntu 20.04 beta cannot connect to dovecot IMAP server

2020-04-26 Thread Chris Samuel
Hi there,

I have a strong suspicion that this is SSL related.

I've found that this does not work:

openssl s_client -connect example.com:993
[...]
139765775537472:error:141A318A:SSL routines:tls_process_ske_dhe:dh key too
small:../ssl/statem/statem_clnt.c:2149:
[...]

but this does (found here: https://imlc.me/dh-key-too-small ):

openssl s_client -connect example.com:993 --cipher 'DEFAULT:!DH'

Now the received wisdom is that this is because of OpenSSL configuration
and you can fix it by adding this to /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf:

[system_default_sect]
MinProtocol = TLSv1.2
CipherString = DEFAULT@SECLEVEL=2

However, that does not seem to work, either for the OpenSSL command line
or for Akonadi.

All the best,
Chris

[Bug 1873746] [NEW] kmail in Kubuntu 20.04 beta cannot connect to dovecot IMAP server

2020-04-20 Thread Chris Samuel
Public bug reported:

Hi there,

I've just upgraded to Kubuntu 20.04 beta and run straight into KDE bug
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419782 where kmail cannot connect
to a dovecot IMAP server.

This was working prior to the upgrade and the symptoms I see match
what's reported in the bug.

Apr 20 00:24:35 [redacted] dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (no auth
attempts in 1 secs): user=<>, rip=[redacted], lip=[redacted], TLS
handshaking: Disconnected, session=

Any chance of getting their fix backported please?

All the best,
Chris

2017-10-18 Thread Chris Samuel
In /var/lib/dpkg/info/apt.postinst there is a comment that says:

# libapt will setup partial/ at runtime

So I wonder if that directory is not meant to exist?

It owned by the update-notifier-common package though:

$ dlocate /var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial
update-notifier-common: /var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial

So perhaps it needs more attention?

I can confirm that Tim Edwards suggestion of installing the sqlite3
packages from Utopic in comment #117 does indeed seem to resolve this
issue.

Before Digikam could crash every few minutes whilst cycling through

[Bug 1266195] Re: grub-installer fails to install when using btrfs

2014-01-05 Thread Chris Samuel
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1059827 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1059827

Remember I still have the Dell created first partition, then the first
Linux extended partition starts at 41.9MB (parted doesn't appear to have
options to output in sectors I'm afraid).

Using fdisk it appears the Dell partition (type de) starts at sector 63
and my extended partition starts at 81918 and my first Linux partition
starts at 81920.

Note that this is after I got a working install by creating an ext4
/boot partition (which is the partition that starts at 81920).

It is a test machine though, so I could blow it away and test a new
install if necessary.

[Bug 1266200] [NEW] Kubuntu installer should offer btrfs RAID options when presented with two identical mount points

2014-01-05 Thread Chris Samuel
Public bug reported:

When I was trying to install Kubuntu on my test system I thought I'd try
and see if it would let me configure a RAID-1 btrfs as the root
filesystem from the installer.

So I configured two btrfs filesystems on different devices and set them
both with the same mount point ( / ) hoping that it would consider that
as a clue that I wanted it as RAID (and hopefully RAID-1).

But instead it rejected the option, saying I had to choose a different
mount point name for the second.

It would be *really* nice if the installer could spot you picking the
same mount point for multiple btrfs partitions on different devices and
offer to built the filesystem as btrfs RAID-1 (or RAID-0 if you really
don't like your data).

[Bug 1266195] [NEW] grub-installer fails to install when using btrfs

2014-01-05 Thread Chris Samuel
Public bug reported:

With the daily Kubuntu 14.04 installer I tried to install with a btrfs
root filesystem and a swap partition (there's also a Dell specific DOS
partition, but I'm leaving that alone) the installer says it fails to
install grub.

Jan 5 12:02:24 kubuntu grub-installer: info: Installing grub on '/dev/sda'
Jan 5 12:02:25 kubuntu grub-installer: info: grub-install does not support
--no-floppy
 Jan 5 12:02:25 kubuntu grub-installer: info: Running chroot /target
grub-install --force "/dev/sda"
 Jan 5 12:02:26 kubuntu grub-installer: /usr/sbin/grub-bios-setup: warning:
your core.img is unusually large. It won't fit in the embedding area.
 Jan 5 12:02:26 kubuntu grub-installer: /usr/sbin/grub-bios-setup: error:
filesystem `btrfs' doesn't support blocklists.
 Jan 5 12:02:26 kubuntu grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install --force
"/dev/sda"' failed.

Needless to say the system fails to boot after that. :-(

[Bug 1266190] [NEW] partman fails to overwrite an already existing filesystem with btrfs

2014-01-05 Thread Chris Samuel
Public bug reported:

When trying the current daily install image for Kubuntu 14.04 I found
that when I tried to overwrite an old install that had ext4 on /dev/sda6
with a new one with btrfs on /dev/sda6 it would keep telling me that the
creation of /dev/sda6 had failed.

Looking at /var/log/syslog it's because mkfs.btrfs is detecting the
existence of an ext4 filesystem and refusing to overwrite it unless it
is passed the -f flag.

In the end I had to dd over the start of /dev/sda6 from /dev/zero to
enable the install to work.

[Bug 1222320] [NEW] Digikam 3.3.0 slow, constantly looking for icons in wrong place

2013-09-07 Thread Chris Samuel
Public bug reported:

Digikam 3.3.0 from the backports PPA for Kubuntu 13.04 (apt-cache policy
info at the end).

It seems really slow compared to previous versions, perf top shows it
spending ~10% of its time in KLocalePrivate::encodeFileNameUTF8. When
you check with strace it seems to be spending most of its time looking
for icons that don't exist:

@Joseph - sorry for the delay, been moving house! I don't think
64748a2c9062da0c32b59c1b368a86fc4613b1e1 was being sent to stable, it
doesn't fix anything as it just gives you more info about it being
tainted.

The real fix will have to be in make-kpkg to stop it altering modules
after signing (bug #1099371).

[Bug 1099371] Re: make-kpkg strips modules when CONFIG_MODULE_SIG is set, breaking crypto sigs

2013-03-25 Thread Chris Samuel
** Description changed:

- Problem:
+ After doing a module install make-kpkg runs objcopy on the modules to
+ copy out the debug sections for a debug package. It then uses objcopy
+ to remove those same debug sections (along with the crypto signature of
+ the module) from the ones in the main package.

- When using make-kpkg to build a current mainline kernel with
- CONFIG_MODULE_SIG to enable cryptographically signed modules the
- resulting kernel, when installed and booted, will be tainted immediately
- upon loading any module, and all modules will appear to have been force
- loaded.
+ Removing those signatures results in any loading of those modules to
+ immediately taint the kernel as the kernel considers the loading of an
+ unsigned module when CONFIG_MODULE_SIG is set as if the module has been
+ forcibly loaded.

- This is the result of make-kpkg unconditionally passing
- INSTALL_MOD_STRIP=1 when installing modules into its tree for packaging,
- resulting in their cryptographic signatures being stripped and so
- failing verification with -ENOKEY.
-
- Fix:
-
- make-kpkg should not pass INSTALL_MOD_STRIP=1 if CONFIG_MODULE_SIG is
- set.
+ make-kpkg should not use objcopy to strip modules if CONFIG_MODULE_SIG
+ is set. My brief testing with my custom kernel config indicated that
+ stripping modules saved 1MB out of 120MB, so it may be not be worth
+ doing in the first place (YMMV).

[Bug 1096497] Re: Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint with no apparent cause

2013-03-25 Thread Chris Samuel
Hi there,

Thanks for finding my patch on LKML, two points:

1) The updated reporting has been incorporated upstream for 3.9 by Rusty
in commit 64748a2c9062da0c32b59c1b368a86fc4613b1e1.

2) Rusty additionally changed the code so that loading an unsigned
module no longer disables lockdep checking in commit
373d4d099761cb1f637bed488ab3871945882273.

The cause of the issue is that *after* doing the module install make-
kpkg runs objcopy on the modules to copy out the debug sections for a
debug package and then uses objcopy to remove the same debug sections
(along with the crypto signatures) from the ones in the main package.
:-(I've reported that as Ubuntu bug #1099371 (though my initial
diagnosis was incorrect, I've updated it in the comments and will
correct the description now).

So until that's fixed all Raring kernels will be tainted on boot due to
loading unsigned kernel modules (unless Ubuntu disables
CONFIG_MODULE_SIG).

[Bug 1099371] Re: make-kpkg strips modules when CONFIG_MODULE_SIG is set, breaking crypto sigs

2013-03-25 Thread Chris Samuel
Please note that after I logged this bug I realised that the issue is
not actually INSTALL_MOD_STRIP as the kernel signs the modules *after*
they are stripped, so the signatures should be OK.

I believe the issue is that *after* doing the module install make-kpkg
then runs objcopy on the modules to copy out the debug sections for a
debug package and then uses objcopy to remove the same debug sections
(along with the signature) from the ones in the main package. :-(

So currently this is affecting Raring (13.04) kernels causing them to be
always tainted (I'll open a separate report to record that), thus:

chris@quad:~$ dmesg | grep -i taint
[2.003424] Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint

chris@quad:~$ grep -w F /proc/modules | wc -l
46

fixes the problem for me!

[Bug 1039261] Re: Version Error loading touchpad kcm: Xinput extension is too old

2012-10-16 Thread Chris Samuel
The title and summary of this bug needs to be fixed, it's misleading.

The problem isn't with the XInput version, which is fine, it's that the
Python code doesn't cope correctly with the error it is getting
(BadValue) which indicates that a previous XIQueryVersion() call was
made with a higher XInput version number (2.1) than the one it sent
(2.0).

This first call appears to now happen when the Python code does:

class SynaptiksApplication(KUniqueApplication):

which is on line 246 of
/usr/share/pyshared/synaptiks/kde/trayapplication.py.

A temporary workaround would be to change line 146 of
/usr/share/pyshared/synaptiks/x11/input.py from:

matched, actual_version = xinput.query_version(display, (2, 0))

to:

matched, actual_version = xinput.query_version(display, (2, 1))

which will make it work until the XInput version changes again (or if
the user runs the code on an older system with XInput version 2.0).

Not entirely sure what the right fix should be, but I suspect this needs
to be reported back upstream to KDE.

[Bug 1039261] Re: Xinput extension is too old

2012-10-12 Thread Chris Samuel
Looking at the diff between libXi 1.6.0 (used in 12.04) and libXi 1.6.1
(used in 12.10) shows this in the notes:

+ Consecutive calls to XIQueryVersion by the same client always return the
+ first returned major.minor version. If the client requests a version
+ lower than the first returned major.minor version in a subsequent call, a
+ BadValue error occurs.

Looking deeper at the xtrace I captured before this looks to be exactly
what is happening:

000:<:0096: 8: XInputExtension-Request(131,47): XIQueryVersion major=2 minor=1
000:>:0096:32: Reply to XIQueryVersion: major=2 minor=1
[...]

000:<:0100: 8: XInputExtension-Request(131,47): XIQueryVersion major=2 minor=0
000:>:0100:Error 2=Value: major=131, minor=47, bad=2
X Error: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) 2
  Extension:131 (XInputExtension)
  Minor opcode: 47 ()
  Resource id: 0x2

[Bug 1039261] Re: Xinput extension is too old

2012-10-10 Thread Chris Samuel
It appears to be an X11 issue, the check itself is being done in libXi
via:

state = libXi.XIQueryVersion(display, byref(major), byref(minor))

The libXi XIQueryVersion code is here:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libXi/tree/src/XIQueryVersion.c

That code appears to result in either BadRequest in case of an internal
error, BadImplementation if it's the correct version or Success if all
is OK. However, the Python code only checks for success and assumes
that any failure is a version problem (not that issue seems to be the
cause here).

Running synaptiks from a bash shell under xtrace shows:

[...]
000:<:0100: 8: XInputExtension-Request(131,47): XIQueryVersion major=2 minor=0
000:>:0100:Error 2=Value: major=131, minor=47, bad=2
X Error: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) 2
  Extension:131 (XInputExtension)
  Minor opcode: 47 ()
  Resource id: 0x2
[...]

So the X server is rejecting the version comparison.

Under 12.04 the transaction is different, in that the request is for a
minor version of 1, not 0:

000:<:0096: 8: XInputExtension-Request(141,47): XIQueryVersion major=2 minor=1
000:>:0096:32: Reply to XIQueryVersion: major=2 minor=1

Hope this helps!

[Bug 1039261] Re: Xinput extension is too old

2012-10-10 Thread Chris Samuel
Interestingly the kde-config-touchpad package is identical between
32-bit 12.04 and 64-bit 12.10 - the filename and MD5sum is identical:

chris@chris-ultralap:~/Code/Ubuntu$ md5sum */*.deb
e334aeb922f58228c8baa888c040ad72
12.04/kde-config-touchpad_0.8.1-1ubuntu1_all.deb
e334aeb922f58228c8baa888c040ad72
12.10/kde-config-touchpad_0.8.1-1ubuntu1_all.deb

So could this be a Python interpreter issue?

[Bug 219868] Re: Boot fails with "initrd extends beyond end of memory" after upgrade to Hardy

2011-04-30 Thread Chris Samuel
I can confirm that this is an upstream bug in the Linux kernel and still
affects all kernels up to and including 2.6.38.*. A fix has now been
merged into 2.6.39 but it's a very trivial single letter change.

The git commit is 39b68976ac653cfdc7f872a293e8b7928de2dcc6 in Linus's
mainline tree and H. Peter Anvin describes it as:

# When we use BIOS function e801 to probe memory, we should use ax/bx
# (or cx/dx) as a pair, not mix and match. This was a typo during the
# translation from assembly code, and breaks at least one set of
# machines in the field (which return cx = dx = 0).

The commit in Linus's tree is here:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=39b68976ac653cfdc7f872a293e8b7928de2dcc6

[Bug 162448] Re: Querying Thunar /proc directory causes hang

2011-02-18 Thread Chris Samuel
It's worth pointing out that this is/was a *kernel* bug not a
XFCE/Thunar bug as it is the kernel responsible for how /proc behaves
(and I'm seeing exactly the same issue on a headless RHEL5 IBM TSM
backup server at work presently, which was how I stumbled across this

The "fix" that Xfce applied was to not monitor /proc which is completely
unrelated to the original bug reporters problem and should not have
closed this bug.

[Bug 471738] Re: client-error-bad-request printing _any_ PDF from any program

2010-11-26 Thread Chris Samuel
Just to confirm, same issue on 10.10 Maverick Kubuntu. Printing a PDF
from Okular results in:

E [27/Nov/2010:10:43:25 +1100] Returning IPP client-error-bad-request
for Create-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/FS-1010) from localhost

Trying to print from the command line results in:

$ lpr /tmp/BelowTheLine.pdf
lpr: Bad job-sheets value ""!

This is because the tool to add printers has added the line:

JobSheets

to the configuration in /etc/cups/printers.conf when it should be:

JobSheets none none

Fixing that and doing "stop cups && start cups" means I can print PDF's
again.

I'm not sure if this is a CUPS problem or a KDE issue, my guess is that
KDE simply tells CUPS what to create and CUPS itself is writing the
printer config.

If I take the packages I built off hold and let aptitude upgrade them

Excellent work Joshua, the only change I had to make to your patch (in
order to add it automatically to the build in the debian/patches
directory) was to change the references from src/$file to a/src/$file
for lines removed and b/src/$file for lines added. Look at
exiv2-0.19/debian/patches/00_hyphens_used_as_minus.diff as an example.
I also named it 01_nikon_exif.diff and added it to the series file in
debian/patches to automate its application.

After rebuilding (and installing) the exiv2 packages and then rebuilding
kdegraphics and installing the new libkexiv2-*.deb packages I was able
to fire up digikam, shot some random images of my office and downloaded
the images from the SD card of my D90 - much much faster!

Final proof that this patch works is redoing my previous tests with the
exiv2 command on the same test image:

ch...@quad:/tmp$ time exiv2 -M'set Exif.Image.Make NoName' DSC_0147.JPG

real0m0.027s
user0m0.000s
sys 0m0.020s

ch...@quad:/tmp$ time exiv2 -M'set Exif.Image.Make NIKON CORPORATION'
DSC_0147.JPG

real0m0.016s
user0m0.000s
sys 0m0.010s

ch...@quad:/tmp$ time exiv2 -M'set Exif.Image.Make NoName' DSC_0147.JPG

real0m0.027s
user0m0.010s
sys 0m0.010s

I make that between 155x and 229x faster than the unpatched version!

debian/patches directory"

[Bug 596327] Re: Digikam imports images taken with Nikon Cameras extremely slow, takes a large amount of time processing exif data

2010-10-01 Thread Chris Samuel
This bug is still present in Maverick (which will be 10.10).

Manipulating an image from a Nikon D90 is over 100 times slower than
manipulating the *EXACT* same image with the camera maker set to
"NoName" in its metadata - and reverting it back to "NIKON CORPORATION"
makes it go over 100 times slower again.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CAN WE GET AN UPDATE ON THIS BUG!

Here's the demonstration of the slowdown:

[Bug 646862] Re: skype crashes after signing in

2010-09-27 Thread Chris Samuel
Just as a followup - I think my issues with PulseAudio are just that it
isn't not working at all for me on Kubuntu - for instance mplayer (a
64-bit app) produces no sound unless I tell it to use ALSA instead of
PA. So it's not related to this bug. Unfortunately it is not possible
to purge PulseAudio from Kubuntu, too much depends on it. :-(

You will also find that the package upgrade would have restored the
permissions on those files anyway - at least it did for me.

Skype no longer crashes with ubuntu6 but there is no audio until I

Turns out that upgrading Kubuntu to Maverick reinstalled PulseAudio
after I'd purged it previously. :-(

[Bug 590088] Re: nepomukservices[2448]: segfaults error 4 in libsoprano.so.4.3.0

2010-06-16 Thread Chris Samuel
I too have upgraded to KDE 4.5.0 beta 2 and found the issue has gone
away; I suspect that's because Mark and I have picked up a newer version
of the libsoprano package and that the issues that we were seeing were
due to interoperability issues between KDE 4.4.4 in PPA and libsoprano
in the Ubuntu repositories.

[Bug 334186] Re: soprano-backend-sesame requires missing /usr/lib/libjvm.so

2009-07-19 Thread Chris Samuel
I've just noticed I had the path to a particular instance of Java in my
file, it should have really been:

 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/amd64/server/

as /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun is a symlink to the current version of Java
and hence won't break Soprano when an updated version of Java is
installed.

probably not wise for any Linux vendors to consider pushing it into the

[Bug 381744] Re: plasma-widget-network-manager causes plasma to crash

2009-07-09 Thread Chris Samuel
This is KDE bug 192790 (RESOLVED) -
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=192790

This is apparently fixed in commit 970021, but the plasma-widget-
network-manager is only from commit 966653.

The Kubuntu package needs updating by the packagers.

[Bug 341898] Re: MythTV Frontend does not work with RADEON DRI

2009-05-07 Thread Chris Samuel
It's worth noting that the mythfrontend script sources /etc/mythtv
/session-settings and as such it's possible to put the line:

export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS="1"

in that config file, rather than the mythfrontend script itself.

That worked for me, though if I tried to set mythfrontend to use the
OpenGL painter (as I had under previous releases) rather than the Qt one
then I get some nasty artifacts one menu transitions. So I went back to
Qt.

[Bug 301007] Re: Missing package dependency

2009-05-01 Thread Chris Samuel
Just ran into this problem in Jaunty when testing smem (mentioned on
this weeks LWN front page), and also described in the smem list archive
here by someone else:
http://selenic.com/pipermail/smem/2009-April/14.html

Apparently the Debian package does have python-tk as a requirement, as
can be seen here - http://packages.debian.org/stable/python-matplotlib

[Bug 334186] Re: Jaunty soprano-backend-sesame2 fails to load

2009-04-13 Thread Chris Samuel
Instead of adding a symlink I created a file called
/etc/ld.so.conf.d/java.conf which contained :

/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.13/jre/lib/amd64/server/

That was enough to get the library resolved.

Should it be the Java packages fixing this ? I would have thought that
they would be using the alternatives system to specify this library if
it's required by external applications.

[Bug 254468] Re: MASTER: momentary video garbage upon drawing new objects (particularly in KDE)

2009-04-12 Thread Chris Samuel
Forgot to mention that I'm running the AMD64 2.6.29.1 kernel that the
Ubuntu mainline kernel people package here - http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29.1/ - which would be a confounding factor.

I find that on my chipset (G33) UXA appears to work better than EXA, so
I'm happy to stick with it.

LimCore - if you want to test whether or not disabling 3D helps then you
can use:

Option "DRI" "false"

and/or:

Option "NoAccel" "true"

in your xorg.conf to see which (if either) helps.

[Bug 276943] Re: Resume from suspend doesn't not work on the Mobile 4 Series chipsets

2008-12-15 Thread Chris Samuel
I can happily report that (for IA-32 at least) those proposed -11 kernel
seems to work for me (as does 2.6.28-rc8 which I'm using from day to
day).

I also discovered that even the -9 kernel that's currently out there
doesn't have the problem if you don't have desktop effects enabled in
KDE4 (obviously because at that point you're not using DRI).

I find that with Intrepid I am getting the same issue with the standard
kernels, in other words I can't install a custom kernel package at all
as it conflicts with files from the linux-firmware package that are
stored directly in /lib/firmware. :-(

I'll try Brian's fix that's gone upstream to see if it fixes things for

[Bug 262605] Re: [intrepid] X locks up or crashes when screensaver activates

I just ran into this same bug having upgraded to Intrepid from Hardy

One thing I note is that in the KDE desktop effects (advanced options)
section the "Use VSync" option was enabled, so I've disabled that now
and will see if it reoccurs in case it's related to the VBLANK issue
mentioned above.

2008-09-03 Thread Chris Samuel
This affects Intrepid, I just upgraded a laptop from Hardy to Intrepid
with "do-release-upgrade -d" and have run into this.

On the other hand it appears that run_parts is not a typo, but is a

this case.
