[Bug 1917896] [NEW] dependency issue

2021-03-05 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

the package in Bionic has a Recommends package of "smartctl", which
doesn't exist. I believe the package name should be smartmontools as
that's what provides the smartctl binary.

Additionally, the program crashes with default options if the smartctl
binary is not installed, so smartmontools should be required.

[Bug 1862977] [NEW] exportfs non-zero exit code without error message

2020-02-12 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Server 18.04, upgraded from 16.04, upgraded from 10.04.
/etc/exports had things like

/path hostname(rw) 10.212.1.9(rw)

where the ip is for that hostname and all was fine, even when DNS wasn't
working.

something seems to have changed since first upgrading to 18.04 where
exportfs -r gives what appears to be a warning "duplicated export
entries", but has now has a non-zero exit code, which causes the server
to not start.

even with -v this still looks like a warning, it does not say anything
about the exports not being applied or any hint that the processes was
considered a failure.

2019-03-14 Thread Chris Weiss
this is still not working quite fully for add-apt-repository on a new
clean install of 18.04.1.

it may be working for http only, but for https you still need to
manually provide the https_proxy env var.

[Bug 1719889] Re: internal-use-only SIDs being mapped to GIDs on users

2019-01-09 Thread Chris Weiss
net groupmap list only shows Administrators and Users.

the problem does not exist on 18.04.

I realize it's not a bug "in ubuntu", but in the version of samba that
ubuntu 16.04 is using. from experience I can tell you that reporting it
to samba is just going to result in them saying "compile your own newer
samba version", which does nothing to get ubunut's LTS samba package to
not give this message.

[Bug 1719889] [NEW] internal-use-only SIDs being mapped to GIDs on users

2017-09-27 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu server 16.04, samba/winbind package version 4.3.11+dfsg-
0ubuntu0.16.04.11

When logging in via SSH as a domain user the error "groups: cannot find
name for group ID 2005" is displayed. running "id $username" also shows
this 2005 group with no name.

"wbinfo -G 2005" returns "S-1-18-1", no other lookups for 2005 or
S-1-18-1 return anything.

MS documentation lists S-1-18-1 as
AUTHENTICATION_AUTHORITY_ASSERTED_IDENTITY, which should not be exposed
in the manner that it is here.

[Bug 1349128] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 lock screen doesn't accept keyboard input and sends it back to the underlying window (until using indicators)

2014-08-06 Thread Chris Weiss
I see this is being treated as critical, but does that also mean it is
being treated as a security issue? I found my password in plain text
after applying the work around, and if that were a chat application
that's a pretty serious security breach.

[Bug 1248391] Re: Can't mirror more than 640x480

2014-04-21 Thread Chris Weiss
finally fully upgraded to 14.04LTS and 1280x720 is still not the list of
resolutions supported for the laptop's panel, thus certain projectors
and displays cannot be mirrored at more than 640x480.

when 1280x720 is manually added using xrandr, it works as expected. how
can 1280x720 be permanently added without generating a conf? I use this
with too many different displays for that to be acceptable.

Can't mirror more than 640x480 was only a symptom of the real problem.
The real problem is that the 1280x720 option that I had been accustomed
to on my hardware is missing.

[Bug 1248391] Re: Can't mirror more than 640x480

2014-01-09 Thread Chris Weiss
using xrandr to add the 1280x720 resolution does work and looks fine,
but it does not persist reboots, and there is no option I can find in
the Displays tool to at add it as implied. Since it was an option in
windows I'm assuming there's something different about how the panel
and/or cards supported resolutions are detected.

[Bug 1265921] [NEW] bacula-traymonitor fails to launch

2014-01-03 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

after creating a config file and verifying with bacula-traymonitor -t,
launching bacula-traymonitor produces no GUI. I'm guessing it goes to
the tray, but Unity doens't have a tray.

Ideally it would go to the indicator area like indicator-multiload does.
but an acceptable workaround would be to just display the GUI and then
exit on close, like a normal application. an optional flag to do this
would be fine if detecting a tray is unreliable..

so why do sysv scripts still do something predictable for other
packages, like samba? it's quite confusing to old schoolers that use
multiple distros to have a script run and fail in bizarre ways. copying

[Bug 1053173] Re: minidlna crashes on boot when no active network connection

2013-10-24 Thread Chris Weiss
kapetr, the bug is posted on the minidlna package. maybe it's due to a
compile option, or an ubuntu patch, I don't know. etiquette is to post
the bug on the package and let the package maintainer either fix it or
post the bug upstream. though it seems that the maintainer may no
longer be active, so I don't know where that leaves us.

[Bug 1058884] Re: do-release-upgrade crashed with EOFError in /usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release: EOF read where not expected

2013-04-10 Thread Chris Weiss
I don't agree that it's incomplete. there exists possibility that
python3-distupgrade will fail to properly install but not provide any
error, despite the md5sum being wrong. re-installing corrects it.

I can say with absolute certainty that my hardware was not at fault. no
other packages had an issue, and re-install worked for reasons I do not
understand.

the question is, why does it allow a file to have the wrong md5sum and
not at least complain about it?

[Bug 382602] Re: tail piped to awk not processing

2012-11-29 Thread Chris Weiss
I think 3 years for anyone to issue any sort of response to the 3 people
that mention they are affected by this change in behavior of default
installed tools says a lot about how much Ubuntu cares about the issue,
so it quite obvious that it doesn't matter what their users think
anymore. it's a sad time.

[Bug 382602] Re: tail piped to awk not processing

2012-11-28 Thread Chris Weiss
the very definition of a regression bugs is when an upgrade changes a
behavior in a such way that a function no longer works the same way.
this is a regression bug. Plain as day. -W interactive is an
unintuitive solution, and it's not exactly clear what's going on even in
12.10's man page.

and how long would I have had to wait for the buffer to catch up and
show my output? I don't see that clearly documented.

hell this was 3 years ago, I don't even remember what I was doing it
for. replacing mawk with gawk was a cleaner solution that adding -W
interactive to who knows how many scripts. replacing the defacto gnu
awk with something that behaves very differently is a problem.

IMO, mawk is still broken. this is poor behavior for a scripting helper
tool. buffering's fine and all, but it should be finite, and for piped
input, a couple seconds tops.

also, does fflush() not actually flush?

[Bug 1057054] [NEW] poor performance after upgrade to Precise

2012-09-26 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

I had a Lucid x64 server working with a Dell MD3000i with 4 paths and
worked as expected. I added the prio rdac line to the conf file, then
upgraded to Precise, and removed the old mpath_rdac line and reboot one
more time, just to be sure. I did this based on a section in
https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/serverguide.pdf

as a sanity check test, I'm doing 'pv /dev/mapper/dellsas1
/dev/null' (friendly names enabled). On Lucid i'd get about 100MB/s
After upgrading to Precise I get an almost solid 768kB/s. If I instead
use the 4 underlying /dev/sd* devices, 2 give errors as expected, and 2
run at about 100MB/s as expected so iscsi seems to be working correctly
and multipath not.

via lsmod? scsi_dh_rdac is loaded. Does it need to be in the initramfs
even if I'm not booting off it?

doing so does fix the performance, but it is also counter-intuitive.
Shouldn't the multipath driver read the conf file and load the needed
modules before finding anything?

[Bug 1057054] Re: poor performance after upgrade to Precise

2012-09-26 Thread Chris Weiss
My devices are on iscsi, and I'm not booting off them. They are not
connected until after the root goes live and network comes active, via
normal means.

I never manually loaded scsi_dh_rdac before, it's not in my initrd nor
my modules files. It loaded automatically somehow. Why isn't it
loading automatically earlier? What loaded it if multipath driver
didn't? other drivers load child drivers, why can't multipath?

I never found that html server guide in my searching and it is helpful.
The PDF I only found after failing a couple times. Other software
presents prompts and links when config formats change, or even changes
them for you, it's become expected, multipath should do it too. The
local manpage for multipath.conf still has prio_callout and not prio
documented, and has zero mention of having to manually load drivers.

Whether this a bug in how the drivers get loaded, or how the
documentation is presented, or how upgrade transition is handled isn't
that relevant, it's still a bug. It's Lucid to Precise upgrade
regression bug. it's not smooth and it's not even easy to find why it's
failing.

If the upgrade had presented me with a screen saying the config and
driver loading formats have changed, and that html link, I'd have
figured it out and we wouldn't be here.

But it survive a reboot. several in fact. I always reboot after major
config changes to reduce the chance of a 2am phone call after a power
outage. I don't lightly file bugs, it's 3 days and 4 OS re-installs to
get me here. This was working on Lucid, and required additional setup
for Precise and I found documentation difficult to find. It's
repeatable, I've been repeating it all week, both on upgrades and clean
installs.

Did lucid also use scsi_dh_rdac? I had no issues there. Something
changed. I wish i could help find out what. Is there a debug flag
and/or log file I can send?

[Bug 1057054] Re: poor performance after upgrade to Precise

2012-09-26 Thread Chris Weiss
after the upgrade and initial reboot, I change the config file and
verified multipath -ll was as I expected, then rebooted and did the pv
test. I did nothing else between my first posting and the reply
verifying lsmod, so yes, it was loaded on reboot.

I have both controllers in the md3000i, and each has 2 ports. a LUN can
be on either controller, and active/active on that one controller, with
the other controller as standby. I also have luns on it used by esxi,
and the RR paths appear to be the same.

I did not check which driver got loaded on lucid, and the dell docs are
really kinda all over the place so I was trying to ignore them. rdac
did seem to be what was happening based on how multipath -ll showed
things, and I did see roughly equal traffic on 2 nics. In my first
attempt with Precise I did initially see the ping-ponging you mention,
before I understood how to apply rdac configs. With Lucid I put the
rdac config in right from the start and did not see that behavior.

is it possible the old mpath_prio_rdac callout was loading the driver
early in the process? I was not aware of scsi_dh_rdac's existence until
this thread, so I have no explanation of how it's getting loaded when
you think it shouldn't be.

it's nice to see the config codified, I'll have to experiment with that
some. thanks for that info.

[Bug 1053173] Re: minidlna crashes on boot when no active network connection

2012-09-25 Thread Chris Weiss
that certainly helps, but it's only partially a fix. local only
operation offline is not possible. yes, one could just directly connect
to the media files, but then you's have 2 databases to handle instead of
just one.

[Bug 1053173] [NEW] minidlna crashes on boot when no active network connection

2012-09-19 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

I've used update-rc.d to make sure it is set to start on boot, but upon
booting it is never started. There is never any error in the syslog or
the minidlna log.

twice now it has also halted the boot process. I did not record the
exact text, but it clearly is complaining that there is no network. It
seems to only complain on stderr and not in the log file.My network
normally does not come up until just after the login screen shows, when
I see the network manager balloon telling about it.

in the conf file I have log_level=debug and network_interface= is
commented out.

in /etc/default/minidlna I have START_DAEMON=yes, and OPTS is empty,
as default, and I've set the user to the one that owns the media
files.

after booted and logged in, service minidlna start always works.

minidlna version 1.024+dfsg-1 on 12.10 beta. I have not run it on older
releases.

[Bug 1035628] Re: [SRU Regression] Alt+Tab/Alt+grave brings other window to the front but loses focus entirely.

2012-09-16 Thread Chris Weiss
I did not see this bug in 12.04, but I do see it in Quantal. if I hold
alt-tab long enough to see the switcher, it does not happen, but happens
every time I do it quickly. My guess is that switcher is launching as I
release the keys, it then shows up enough to take focus and realize the
keys are released and goes away leaving focus in limbo.

I have not had gnome3 PPA's on either installation. My 12.04 was in
place upgrade from each version since 10.04, but my Quantal is a clean
install but keeping the /home.

[Bug 928401] Re: Cannot boot Oneric installation disk on eBox 3300

2012-03-27 Thread Chris Weiss
it is not possible to collect that information, I did boot with quiet
and splash off and the kernel immediately stops with the error, similar
to when attempting to boot a x64 kernel on a cpu that does not support
x64.

The hardware as been deployed with an older ubuntu release, so I cannot
test latest. Does the kernel team say a change was made in cpu
requirements?

[Bug 928401] [NEW] Cannot boot Oneric installation disk on eBox 3300

2012-02-07 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

Cannot boot Oneric i386 Alternate installation disk on eBox 3300,
processor is VortexDx86. Kernel complains that the CPU is an i486 but
i586 is required. DMP, the manufacturer, claims it to be 586-class, and
the wikipedia page for Vortex86 also claims so.

Lucid does boot and run on this device, but does not have the network
driver included in the pre-compiled kernels, see bug 650899.

[Bug 398923] Re: Disable Connect to localhost in Vinagre

2011-11-25 Thread Chris Weiss
disabling localhost would also disable ssh tunnels, which would make
vinagre completely useless for those that admin remote systems. This
could be overriden with the use host option, as long as it remains
fixed (it has been broken in the last 2 releases).

if it's possible to detect when the remote connect is to itself, this
would fix the problem properly, but that would be have to be part of
the vnc protocol itself.

[Bug 879470] [NEW] unexplained high latency

2011-10-21 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

I'm experiencing some occasional high latency that's causing some irc clients
to timeout. xchat is showing 5-10 second lag.
Server isn't swapping, iostat shows 10 %util, await has occasional single
spikes to 20, low cpu usage, network utilization also low.
all clients are on 100mbit or better LAN connections.

I'm not really sure how to diagnose this, best I can tell it's either
because a client connecting or disconnecting and ngircd is blocking on
something.

I also notice the packaged version for 10.04LTS is 3 years old, and even
11.10's is 2 years old and I have to wonder if some of the code
cleanup and better error handling notes in the change logs over the
past 2 years would reduce this latency I'm seeing. Is there a reason
for the old version?

there's 2 because i tried 2 times to make sure I didn't typo, then

[Bug 524450] Re: smbd panic using root postexec

2010-03-10 Thread Chris Weiss
You'll need some cd iso's in a directory, then see my samba.conf for
how i create the shares. the share names should match the iso file name
but add a iso- prefix. the mount and unmount scripts will handle
creating the share directories and loop mounting and unmounting the iso
files to it

I've not tried it on a different 9.04 or 9.10 yet though and I suspect i
may have a different problem. I decided to go production with this
server anyway, and I have an old application that runs on NT4 IIS that
uses an IIS virtual directory to a UNC path that is just a normal samba
share, no pre/post-exec's, on this server and it too is panicing smbd in
exactly the same way. No other shares or clients are causing panics.

the behavior is a little different, the share still works initially but
seems to call the panic action quite often, possibly when IIS decides
the share is idle and disconnects it, and it will usually reconnect on
the next access, but so far once a day it will not reconnect requiring a
restart of the IIS admin service. This setup has been working perfectly
(as far as I know) for many years, starting with samba 2.4.x on Debian
Sarge and with various Ubuntu and samba versions since.

The common factor it seem is when windows disconnects from a share
without a full system logoff or shutdown. Is there a way to increase
logging for just a single share to get more data? I have 50 clients
PC's on this now so a system wide log level increase will make a hell of
a lot of noise.

uses an IIS virtual directory to a UNC path that is just a normal samba
share, no pre/post-exec's, on this server and it too is panicing smbd in
exactly the same way.

[Bug 524450] [NEW] smbd panic using root postexec

2010-02-19 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Using ubuntu 9.04, samba 3.3.2, package version 2:3.3.2-1ubuntu3.3
I have some shares for which I use a root preexec and root postexec to loop
mount and unmount an ISO for so I can share some CDrom instead of carrying them
all over the place or extracting them (I also mount them from VMWare so i want
to keep them as ISO's) and this setup has been working great on 8.04 with samba
3.0.28a.

on 9.04, the preexec works, but on disconnecting from the share the
postexec doesn't seem to fire (or at least the loop mounted ISO doesn't
get unmounted) and smbd panics. Running my postexec script manually
does work. I've attached the log that shows the panic.

in the log you can me trying 2 shares, both are defined the same way,
but the 2nd has a force user=root in an attempt to see if it's an odd
permissions issue.

** Affects: samba (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

[Bug 445953] Re: shutdown asks for password with only 1 user logged in

2009-11-25 Thread Chris Weiss
just a status update:
I've gotten this once more, and it was a cron job but I don't know which one,
by the time I dug that far into it, it was done.
I've since reinstalled clean to a new HDD, hopefully it won't come back.

[Bug 384591] Re: Reiser4 is not included into the Linux Kernel

I'm finding it surprising of the lack of interest in reiser4 since it's
the only linux filesystem that supports transparent compression, and has
for 2+ years.

[Bug 445953] Re: shutdown asks for password with only 1 user logged in

2009-10-19 Thread Chris Weiss
before you guys get all crazy changing packages on this report, I'm
fairly certain I don't have mythTV installed.

In my case, I suspect a SMB session from the wife's laptop, but since
this a desktop role system I don't see why I have to put in a password
for this. prompt on x11-display != '' I can see, but otherwise why
care.

James, this *is* my bug report. however, the email generated from your
post has** Package changed: consolekit (Ubuntu) = mythtv (Ubuntu) at
the end making me think the package was being changed, but that doens't
seem to be reflected on the web site so i guess it's not a problem
