[Bug 67141] Re: Please create and enforce a system-wide policy to unset GREP_OPTION by default
komputes: They aren't in the init scripts, etc. The problem is that if a user adds GREP_OPTIONS to their environment (manually, or via .bashrc, etc.) then it can break init.d scripts, etc. At the time, if you did `env GREP_OPTIONS=-E /etc/init.d/blah start` it could break the `blah` script in unpredictable ways. Also it can break various scripts in /usr/bin and /bin Depending on the users setup, GREP_OPTIONS may also make it through a sudo call. The reason why this is a problem is that troubleshooting this kind of problem can be very difficult because only the person with GREP_OPTIONS set will have the breakage and it'll not be obvious that this is happening. I hope that clears this up. [Bug 882125] [NEW] nsIProcess doesn't work for some executables
Public bug reported: Hello! I'm the author of the Firefox extension It's All Text!. This extension launches a local editor (like emacs or gvim) with the contents of a textarea to make editing web pages (wikis, etc.) easier. I have discovered a bug in Ubuntu's firefox: https://github.com/docwhat/itsalltext/issues/18 It appears that the nsIProcess run*() methods fail for *some* binaries. In the issue I referenced above, the user was able to use /usr/bin/gedit but not /usr/bin/sublime-text-2. It would fail to launch and return an exit code 1. The user was nice enough to let me screen share with him and we tried runwAsync() (the default), runAsync(), and run() to launch the editor but it failed in all cases. We then downloaded Firefox from the official site (both the Ubuntu one and the official one were 7.0.1) and nsIProcess then worked. I am unable to figure out: * How /usr/bin/gedit and /usr/bin/sublime-text-2 differ that one fails and one succeeds. * How the Ubuntu Firefox and the Official Firefox differ. I haven't a clue about what's going on here. I am unable to reproduce this problem in my VM. I'll ask the user to subscribe to this bug in case you want to ask him additional questions. [Bug 882213] [NEW] Apparmor doesn't notify user of enforcements
Public bug reported: When apparmor prevents something from running, it doesn't notify the user. I expected it to notify the user via a popup or something similar. In my case, I wrote a Firefox plugin that opens an editor (like emacs or gvim) with the contents of the textarea. A user was able to configure it to use gedit, but not sublime-text-2; sublime-text-2 would return an exit code 1 and just fail to start. see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/882125 for the details. Long story short; If a simple dialog had popped up and said AppArmor prevented sublime-text-2 from running then it would have saved all our time: The users, mine, and the gentleman who helped on the above bug. If that isn't feasible then maybe having it exit with a non-standard exit code (say, 126 or something) then we could have googled that. ** Affects: apparmor (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882213 Title: Apparmor doesn't notify user of enforcements To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/+bug/882213/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hello! I'll happily answer any questions about this. I can reproduce the problem on my box. [Bug 151610] deskbar-applet behaves inconsistantly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: deskbar-applet What Happens: I use deskbar to start terminals frequently using the following: * (press key combo to open deskbap) * type 'term' * press 'enter' If I wait before pressing enter, say 3-5 seconds, then I always get launch terminal or history: launch terminal item. If I type this very quickly, sometimes the history and launch sections aren't finished being displayed and it does something different, such as 'search web' or something equally stupid. What I expect: If I type the above, I should ALWAYS get history or launch, since they are the first two items in my preferences. Notes: I think that deskbar accepts the 'enter' before finishing querying all the sources. I think that if it has an answer from a source, it needs to wait for all the higher priority sources to finish before processing the 'enter'. GUI-wise, I think it is okay to close the window after enter, but it still needs to wait for the higher priority sources. Which is nice, except that I can't configure the keyboard. System-Preferences-Keyboard is set the way I want it to be, but Compiz doesn't honor it. The one that's bugging me is Alt-F2 does the Popup Launch a Program dialog, because I never use that and usually have it configured to something else. I don't see any compiz config program on my system, but that'd be an 'advanced user' behaviour. Normal users wouldn't use locate to find compize config anyway. [Bug 67141] Re: GREP_OPTION can break system scripts
It needs to be considered as a distro policy level, so I guess they are different. But it's the same issue -- GREP_OPTIONS changes the behavior of a tool that is used for various purposes, including things that can effect security. I simple tool (attached) can be used to detect shell scripts that need changing Ciao! ** Attachment added: A script to find shell scripts that need 'unset GREP_OPTIONS' http://launchpadlibrarian.net/8954849/find-grep-opt -- GREP_OPTION can break system scripts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/67141 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 67141] Re: GREP_OPTIONS can break system scripts
I do set GREP_OPTIONS in my .bashrc, etc. Specifically, I use GREP_OPTIONS=--color=auto It is a common command someone might set. Either one off (just to see color for some greps) or routinely (like I have in my bashrc). It is a security issue because it open up holes, prevent actions from happening, etc. if a grep doesn't return what the user expects. For example: --- $ grep -E -q local /etc/hosts ; echo $? 0 $ env GREP_OPTIONS=-P grep -E -q local /etc/hosts ; echo $? grep: conflicting matchers specified 2 $ env GREP_OPTIONS=-f/dev/zero grep -E -q local /etc/hosts ; echo $? grep: memory exhausted 1 Just for a few examples of how this can go wrong, maliciously or otherwise. GREP_OPTIONS can be used to read in files (-f) or change the meaning of a grep (illegal options) or otherwise corrupt it's usage in a script. The fact that a tool that is usually used without considering how it could fail is used everyplace is the problem. I suggest just add something to /lib/lsb/init-functions to unset GREP_OPTIONS. I don't have a specific security hole in mind, but something like a firewall going down might try to turn off packet forwarding, but think it's already down and leave it up. Or something like that. [Bug 75031] Re: GREP_OPTIONS is evil
In the version I now have in feisty, -E no longer causes a problem. However, you can cause problems with GREP_OPTIONS=-P which causes the egrep -q commands to always return true. In addition, using something like GREP_OPTIONS=--color=always can also mess up anything that needs to parse the output of grep. May I suggest that all init.d scripts start with 'unset GREP_OPTIONS'? [Bug 49849] Re: --expire-time (-t) wraps if wait is too big
This was a problem in libnotify, which came with Dapper. This apparently isn't a problem in libnotify1 which is in Edgy. Edgy's version is better: $ /usr/bin/notify-send -t 2147483648 summary Body Integer value '2147483648' for -t out of range Feel free to mark this resolved in Edgy or newer (version 0.4.2-0ubuntu3). [Bug 84732] Re: [SRU]: python-pam contains no binaries (edgy)
I'm confused. Is this bug or is bug #69967 the bug for Edgy? The problem is that **edgy** has a totally useless python-pam package. [Bug 69760] Re: TypeError: Unicode
I can confirm that this is indeed an issue in Edgy Eft. I was working around it in Dapper by using python2.2, but that doesn't exist. This makes Edgy's version TOTALLY BROKEN for anyone who uses non-ascii characters! The problem, for those that want to know, is that that Mailman uses an older version of the email package. Python2.4 uses version 3.x, and mailman needs 2.5.x. The fix in debian is to re-enable the 2.5.x of email that comes with mailman. Workaround: # apt-get source mailman # cd mailman-*/misc # tar xzf email-2.5.?.tar.gz # cd email-2.5.? # python setup.py install --install-lib /usr/lib/mailman/Mailman Ciao! -- TypeError: iso-8859-1 https://launchpad.net/bugs/69760 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
