[Bug 400294] [NEW] Update of kdm kills active sessions

2009-07-16 Thread Christian Schuerer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

I'm used to run aptitude in yakuake from my running KDE session. When
KDM is updated, it kills the active session as KDM and all running
sessions are shut down because of the update. This has been differently
in the past (I'm using karmic with all packages up to date).

[Bug 392978] [NEW] Update from screen-profiles to byobu does not clean up .profile

2009-06-27 Thread Christian Schuerer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: byobu

The package screen-profiles put the line "[ -x /usr/bin/screen-launcher
] && /usr/bin/screen-launcher" into the .profile file so that it is
started automatically. Byobu does the same when you select the
"autostart" menu option but it does not remove the one from screen-
profiles. The result is the following two lines:

[ -x /usr/bin/screen-launcher ] && /usr/bin/screen-launcher
`echo $- | grep -qs i` && byobu-launcher

This causes to start a new screen-session when I close the last shell
(yes, I do sometimes exit all shells :-))

It's not hard to remove one line, but maybe you could do that
automatically on update too.

[Bug 351306] [NEW] akonadi causes high cpu usage

2009-03-29 Thread Christian Schuerer
Public bug reported:

I have some ical- and vcards-files configured in akonadi as resources.
After I've updated from Intrepid to Jaunty, akonadi and dbus where
causing a high cpu usage.

In the akonadi debug console, there were constantly appearing lines
like:

 * OK Akonadi Almost IMAP Server [PROTOCOL 6]
 0 LOGIN akonadi_ical_resource_12
 0 OK User logged in
1 UID FETCH 282 FULLPAYLOAD CACHEONLY (UID REMOTEID FLAGS SIZE DATETIME)
 1 OK UID FETCH completed

Frankly, there were millions of these messages in the log, becoming more
and more every second. The resource with id 12
(akonadi_ical_resource_12) is a simple ical file with only a few
entries. No IMAP here!

After restarting the akondi server this behaviour comes back. I could
solve the problem only by removing and re-adding this resource again.

[Bug 350397] Re: [Dell Inc. Latitude D620] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-03-29 Thread Christian Schuerer
Some further update on this problem. Resume fails even if the notebook
is not docked at all (contrary to my previous comment). But
suspend/resume works fine (even networking with network manager is up)
when I use pm-suspend from the terminal. The downside with this method
is that the KDE session is not locked after a resume (which should be,
specially speaking about a notebook computer). So I will add kde-base to
this bug report as probably power-devil is causing this problem (which
would handle a suspend request via the power management plasma widget).

[Bug 350397] Re: [Dell Inc. Latitude D620] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-03-28 Thread Christian Schuerer
It seams as if resume does not work if I suspend having the notebook in
the docking station and resume with it and vice-versa.

I could suspend and resume now without being docked into the docking
station, but then I have an other problem: network just doesn't work
anymore. I've tried to restart network-manager, dbus and hal, but only a
reboot brings back networking.

[Bug 346678] [NEW] error messages from akonaditray after log in and high cpu usage

2009-03-22 Thread Christian Schuerer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

After I've upgraded from Intrepid to Jaunty, I always get the following
error message (11 times, for each my resources) after I log into KDE (or
when I restart the akonadi server):

"Unknown error. (Could not create collection)"

Despite these error messages, akonadi seems to work as I can access my
address books and calendars in Kontact. Nevertheless, there is a
permanent high cpu usage from akonadiserver and
akonadi_[ical|kcal|vcard]_resource, which sum up to about 20%. There was
no high cpu usage on Intrepid. If I stop akonadiserver, the high cpu
usage stops too. Furthermore, the akonadi resources and the akonadi
mysql server are permanently writing to the disk (once per second) - I
can see these processes on top of iotop all the time. Again, if I stop
akonadiserver, everything is back to normal again. Specially these
frequent disk accesses are bad for a laptop computer as the disk can
never stop to save energy.

[Bug 273323] Re: Regression: Intrepid - 2.6.27 hangs on resume

2008-10-05 Thread Christian Schuerer
After adding the exit command as you suggested, nothing happened when
pressing the sleep button as powerdevil (which didn't come with default
profiles and didn't have the option to react on sleep button events
until the latest version) wasn't configured to issue any action. When I
set up powerdevil to suspend my computer if the sleep button is pressed,
I did so, but the resume didn't work as before. I don't know what
powerdevil does in the event of a sleep request - maybe it does more
than just calling pm-suspend. Currently, running "sudo pm-suspend" from
the terminal is the best way to have a working resume. I can live with
that.

BTW, after updating the the newest kernel version (2.6.27-5-generic) it
seems that resume is faster than before - but maybe this is only because
my computer is currently not docked into the docking station - will test
that in the evening again.

Re: [Bug 273323] Re: Regression: Intrepid - 2.6.27 hangs on resume

2008-10-03 Thread Christian Schuerer
The output of acpi_listen after I've pressed the sleep button is

button/sleep SBTN 0080 0001

The computer suspends then. When I resume, the screen flickers and two white,
horizontal, flickering lines stay for some seconds until the computer powers
off
completely. When I power it on again, it runs a normal boot (repairing the file
system obviously). I will enclose a current kern.log. You can see that after
the resume pm says that it will suspend the system again. This system was
installed with hardy and updated to intrepid some time ago. Do you think there
is some old configuration mixed with new one?

[Bug 277322] [NEW] KDE screen stays blank/black after some idle time

2008-10-02 Thread Christian Schuerer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

The KDE desktop just get useless - the screen is totally black, no
windows are shown, although the mouse pointer changes if I e.g. move it
over an area where an application with a text field should be, it even
seems to open yakuake when I press F12. This happens after I leave KDE
running idle for a while. I can switch to a VT but killing the X server
is the only way to get a running KDE desktop again.

I know that this report doesn't provide a lot of clues since I couldn't
find out more than just seeing that the system is unusable.

I meant that you blacklist it from suspend[1], which would mean that the
driver is removed prior suspend and then loaded again. If you don't blacklist
it, then the system tries to suspend the device, which can cause problems if
the device and/or the driver do not properly support it. Thus removing it
before suspend and loading it again afterwards can have a different behavior.

[1] e.g. in /etc/pm/config.d/config:
SUSPEND_MODULES="$SUSPEND_MODULES snd_hda_intel"

Kind regards,
Christian

[Bug 273323] Re: Regression: Intrepid - 2.6.27 hangs on resume

2008-09-27 Thread Christian Schuerer
I've noticed that this problem is probably not directly caused by the
kernel, thus I will add some other packages.

I just managed to suspend/resume several times with "sudo pm-suspend"
from the terminal - without any problem. But when I use the hotkeys of
my notebook computer for standby, then it suspends, but crashes on
resume. I can see from the log files that pm-suspend is called this way
too - but there seem to be more programs involved in the process. What
else tries to take care about suspension? I've powerdevil for KDE
installed, but before I had kde-guidance - it crashed with either of
them. In the past (at hardy times), I had problems at resume with kde-
guidance as well, but I could use kpowersave, which worked without any
problem. So what does e.g. powerdevil do (despite of lock kde session at
resume), that makes the kernel crash?

[Bug 273323] Re: Regression: Intrepid - 2.6.27 hangs on resume

2008-09-25 Thread Christian Schuerer
Hi Chris,

I've noticed this error message before and read the info in the sources
too but it doesn't say anything to me. My computer is for sure not too
slow, having a dual core CPU and 2GB of RAM. And it worked in the past
without any problems. Hardy was the first time when I could suspend and
resume countless times without any worries.

Yesterday I did a suspend with pm-suspend from the console. I could
resume after that without any problem. Doing a 2nd suspend, the kernel
hard crashed (flashing lights) after resume. This time I used the hot
keys on my laptop computer, but obviously pm-suspend is called this way
too (according to the suspend logs). I will attach the new kern.log.

Did something change in the last kernel updates which could cause such
timing problems?

[Bug 273323] [NEW] Regression: Intrepid - 2.6.27 hangs on resume

2008-09-22 Thread Christian Schuerer
Public bug reported:

I'm opening a new bug report as advised in Bug #272624. I have a Dell
Latitude D620 which I could suspend and resume without any problems in
kernel versions 2.6.27-2 and prior. But since 2.6.27-3, resume doesn't
work anymore, even not with the just published 2.6.27-4. I've tried to
debug this problem as shown at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend.

The debug-output shows the following.

First run:
[2.138531] Magic number: 8:539:138
[2.138536] block ram3: hash matches
[2.138696] rtc_cmos 00:06: setting system clock to 2008-09-22 17:06:11 UTC

[2.130708] rtc_cmos 00:06: setting system clock to 2044-02-11 20:36:30 UTC

Another run:
[2.129585] Magic number: 0:953:872
[2.129588] hash matches
/build/buildd/linux-2.6.27/drivers/base/power/main.c:390

[2.129754] rtc_cmos 00:06: setting system clock to 1992-06-13 06:51:46 UTC
(708418306)

I'm not sure what is causing this problem now - the hardware didn't
change and it even doesn't work anything detached.

[Bug 188373] Re: kde-guidance doesn't react on special hotkeys anymore

2008-09-03 Thread Christian Schuerer
I'm re-opening this bug report again. Currently there is guidance-power-manager
4:4.1.0-0ubuntu3 installed. My laptop is a DELL Latitude D620, which has a
hotkey for suspend, hibernate and battery status. Guidance power manager only
reacts on the hibernate button with a suspend (it's called standby in the
configuration). It doesn't react on the suspend, nor on the battery status
button. If I press the suspend button, then I can see a event in "lshal -m",
but there is obviously no event via hal for the hibernate and battery status
button. I don't know if this is a guidance power manager problem or a hal
problem, so I will include both packages in this bug report.
BTW, kpowersave behaves as expected, so it's maybe still a guidance power
manager problem.
Pls advise how I can provide more debugging information.

[Bug 185471] Re: Problems with suspend

2008-09-01 Thread Christian Schuerer
Hi Thomas,

I can't see from the logs what is really causing the problems (maybe
someone from the kernel team could), but maybe an update to intrepid of
your full system would help. I'm running intrepid on my one and only
laptop since months. Sure there where some problems sometimes, but now
as the release is due soon, there are no big changes any more. But be
warned, that an update could cause problems, so backup your data.

E.g., pm-utils in intrepid has seen a lot of changes - just have a look
at the changelog: http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/p
/pm-utils/pm-utils_1.1.2.4-1ubuntu1/changelog

If you want to stay with hardy for now you could have a look at uswsusp.

Regards,
Christian

It looks as if something is taking too long to wake up again. Which
driver do you use for your graphics card?

Did you test to suspend/resume with all external devices detached (even

Are all packages up to date? The log file of pm-suspend looks different

[Bug 185471] Re: Hardy 8.04-a3 does not suspend

2008-08-31 Thread Christian Schuerer
Thomas, why don't you use the pm-utils? Try to suspend with "sudo pm-
suspend". If this doesn't work either, have a look into the log files
(/var/log/pm-suspend.log).

In the log you attached on 1.2.2008 it says:

[ 731.428381] Suspending console(s)
[  731.431397] suspend_device(): usb_suspend+0x0/0x30 [usbcore]() returns -32
[ 731.431468] Could not suspend device 3-2.1: error -32
[ 731.442525] Some devices failed to suspend

So which usb device do you have which couldn't be suspended? Try to
suspend without any usb device attached, please. And check which device
causes this matter.

[Bug 260839] [NEW] No keyborad/mouse after suspend

2008-08-24 Thread Christian Schuerer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

This problem is similar to Bug 256261, but the problem reported here
also occurs with the work around for Bug 256261 applied.

When KDM is selected as login manager, then I don't have any
keyboard/mouse input after a suspend. Only changing to the VT and back
to X solves the problem.

** Affects: kdebase-workspace (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 202129] Re: KDM permanently needs 50% CPU

2008-08-22 Thread Christian Schuerer
I think I found a solution/workaround. Disabling "use vsync" and kwins
CPU usage is back to normal (even with desktop effects enabled).
Tristan, could you try that too, pls?

I'm using a nvidia graphics card, maybe this has something to do with
it. Maybe vsync shouldn't be enabled by default if it is causing
problems.

[Bug 202129] Re: KDM permanently needs 50% CPU

2008-08-21 Thread Christian Schuerer
When desktop effects are enabled, I'm having this problem too (KDM takes 50% to
100% on a dual core system, even if the desktop is "idle", meaning that no
window is moved, resized,...).
I'm using intrepid, GPU is nvidia.
kdm: Installed: 4:4.1.0-0ubuntu8
If I disable desktop effects, then KDM CPU usage seems as it is used to be.
At KDE 3.5 times compiz wasn't using as much CPU as KDM uses now.

[Bug 259867] Re: intrepid latest update authentication failed

2008-08-20 Thread Christian Schuerer
The packages which where updated are libpam-modules and libpam-runtime.
There are no old versions of them in the repos anymore, so a simple
downgrade is not possible, unless you have some old packages of them in
your apt cache (/var/cache/apt/archives/)

[Bug 259874] [NEW] CRITICAL: PAM error message - Cannot make/remove an entry for the specified session

2008-08-20 Thread Christian Schuerer
Public bug reported:

After the update of libpam-modules and libpam-runtime, I cannot log in
anymore, neither via GDM/KDM, nor at the console. Only root user in
recovery mode is possible, but I even can't su to my regular user as
root - I always see the error message. Pls fix this urgently, as it's
hard to recover from this problem afterwards. Thanks!

The upstream bug has been resolved - pls check if this fix can be
applied to the package in intrepid. ZIP files are very popular and not
being able to open them is really a regression.

Well, after the latest updates and patches to QT 4.4.1 and KDE it works
for me again. Bruno, can you try it again, maybe the problem is solved
on your computer too. It had several other problems after updating to
KDE 4 but removing some config files helped (i.e. for the hotkeys).

Add. note: even the System Tray plasmoid doesn't work anymore - it is
just empty. If I want to add a folder view widget, then I just get a
black, tiny circle. The context menu says "Unknown applet".

I can confirm that this bug exists. I even tried it with a newly created
user to rule out old config files as cause for this problem. The problem
occured after the update of KDE to 4:4.1.0-0ubuntu1 - it worked fine
with 4.0.98 (IIRC).

[Bug 246855] Re: [intrepid] Resuming from suspend causes a cold boot

2008-07-12 Thread Christian Schuerer
This problem happens to me too (on a Dell D620). Suspend/hibernation
worked perfectly on hardy, but doesn't work any more on intrepid. If I
issue pm-suspend, then machine suspends as it did on hardy, but when I
start the computer again, it does a cold boot. The log of pm-suspend
seems okay to me. Please advise me how I can help to investigate this
problem further.
