In Preferences->Sound playback is set to auto detect. I have used Arch Linux with the 2.6.22 kernel and it logged in in 20 seconds, about 10 seconds less than edgy and even less than gutsy. I have tried to strace gnome-session as stated in http://live.gnome.org/GnomePerformance/LoginTime The session died quickly, so this approach didn't wok. I added a new session type in /usr/share/xsessions/ and replaced 'gnome- session' with 'strace -ttt -f -o /tmp/login.strace /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome- session' This works fine but strace keeps running even after login. Here is a strace of nautilus while starting up. I started strace manually after logging in in gdm, so it may not be totally complete. Anyway, it seems there are lot of files that nautilus is opening but are not there. This includes locale stuff and icons. I'm not sure if this is causing the slow down. In gutsy, I can see entries for Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Smart Media, but not for the SD card that is in the drive. Public bug reported: Using gutsy beta, installed from alternate CD. I have set my screen resolution to [EMAIL PROTECTED] using the Screens and Graphics utility because it was incorrectly set after installation. The screen resolution in the desktop was wrong first (set to 2100 something), then I had to use Preferences->Screen Resolution to set it again. After logging out, gdm did not use 1280x1024, but the bigger one I think. The effect I see, is that I get a big virtual desktop that moves around when I move the mouse around. I've compiled a vanilla 2.6.21.5 kernel using the config from edgy 2.6.17. It was compiled in edgy because it failed in gutsy because of this bug - I think. I installed the new kernel and tried to do a aptitude install openoffice and other packages (just to not overload the system). I've run a memcheck, no errors reported. I've tried to copy files from NTFS and etx3 partitions in edgy. The load was very high also, but that may be caused by using USB 1.1 Anyway, on edgy the system was responsive, with occasional mouse pointer lockups. So I think the load is not a problem, I just thought it was. Like I said the problem on feisty is new. I have been running feisty for a long time.
