[Bug 236369] [NEW] [needs-packaging] wxpropgrid

2008-05-31 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Public bug reported:

http://wxpropgrid.sourceforge.net/

This is a control for wxwidgets.

It is difficult to install because it needs a patched SWIG for wxpython
use. There are other issues as well.

For developers it would be extremely nice to have this packaged in
Ubuntu.

I don't think Debian has packaged this yet.

[Bug 212141] [NEW] No sound out of the box in Hardy

2008-04-05 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Public bug reported:

I have installed the beta, my home dirs for two different users have
been migrated from feisty.

The sound does not work at all in Hardy out of the box.

In Preferences->Sound playback is set to auto detect. Testing the sound
(Sound Event) gives:

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

The next one (music)

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink profile=music: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

etc.

If I choose OSS as the sound system, sound works.

I have tried to strace gnome-session as stated in
http://live.gnome.org/GnomePerformance/LoginTime

The session died quickly, so this approach didn't wok.

I added a new session type in /usr/share/xsessions/ and replaced 'gnome-
session' with 'strace -ttt -f -o /tmp/login.strace /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-
session'

This works fine but strace keeps running even after login. If you kill
strace, then you'll get logged out and have a nice log file in
/tmp/login.strace

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-11-13 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Here is a strace of nautilus while starting up.

I started strace manually after logging in in gdm, so it may not be
totally complete.

Anyway, it seems there are lot of files that nautilus is opening but are
not there. This includes locale stuff and icons.

I'm not sure if this is causing the slow down. Definitely it does not
make it faster.

[Bug 160550] Regression: Sandberg card reader not working anymore

2007-11-06 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Public bug reported:

Using gutsy.

With edgy the card reader was working fine. It also works fine in Debian
etch.

In gutsy, I can see entries for Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Smart
Media, but not for the SD card that is in the drive.

The kernel sees the card and when I mount it by hand it works fine, so
it is probably not caused by the kernel.

No, I'm not using deskbar, it is simply too slow to load.

Also, it does not make sense to compare your load times with mine, since

I'm wondering why the importance is set to Low, when this affects a lot

Like I wrote in the upstream report, loading gnome 2.20 in Arch Linux

It seems that the startup daemons / stuff is more or less the same.

differences.

[Bug 89381] Re: File Upload dialog has no preview for images

2007-10-21 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Gabriel,

I completely agree.

However, I think that Gnome upstream (and Ubuntu also) has closed the
bug about general preview functionality in gtkfilechooser. I don't
understand the reason behind this decision.

It seems very inefficient to enable it in all programs.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-10-09 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Deskbar is really slow to load, I guess it has to do with python being

Logging in again is fast maybe caused by caching.

Logging in twice in edgy is really fast also (about 7 seconds here).

@dennda: you have to patch bootchart to profile the login. Otherwise
you'll get the boot process.

@Brandon: they are not the problem. You have to remove them, reboot and then
login to get a accurate measurement.
There is a regression even when not having the deskbar and user switch on the

[Bug 146828] gdm uses incorrect screen resolution

2007-09-29 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Public bug reported:

Using gutsy beta, installed from alternate CD.

I have set my screen resolution to [EMAIL PROTECTED] using the Screens and
Graphics utility because it was incorrectly set after installation.

The screen resolution in the desktop was wrong first (set to 2100
something), then I had to use Preferences->Screen Resolution to set it
again.

After logging out, gdm did not use 1280x1024, but the bigger one I
think. The effect I see, is that I get a big virtual desktop that moves
around when I move the mouse around.

Desktop screen resolution is now fine, but gdm is using the wrong one.

[Bug 134306] gnome-search-tool needs integration with indexer (tracker, beagle)

2007-08-23 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Since gutsy now includes tracker by default, I would suggest some work
to be done to integrate indexers better in Ubuntu.

Currently, you can go to Places->Search for files and
Applications->Accessories->Tracker Search Tool.

The user has no way of knowing what the difference between these tools
are.

I would suggest that "Search for files" be replaced with "Search".

This tool could be either gnome-search-tool or tracker search tool.
However, to integrate it properly:

* gnome-search-tool should include a "Indexed" option to search using an
indexer like tracker or beagle
* OR tracker-search-tool should include an option to search non-indexed
locations

The latter is needed if the user wants to search a non-indexed location.

I'm not sure that "Indexed" is the best word to . Maybe other
suggestions are better.

[Bug 102498] Re: High load and extremely unresponsive system

2007-07-06 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
I've found out that my system was running without swap (using 'free').

On a system with 256 MB RAM total, it will result in an unresponsive
system pretty quickly.

I think that there is a bug in both the feisty and gutsy kernel: you are
allowed to allocate more memory than you have when running without swap.

The vanilla kernel behaves as it should, IMHO.

[Bug 102498] Re: High load and extremely unresponsive system

2007-07-05 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
I've compiled a vanilla 2.6.21.5 kernel using the config from edgy
2.6.17. It was compiled in edgy because it failed in gutsy because of
this bug - I think.

I installed the new kernel and tried to do a aptitude install openoffice
and other packages (just to not overload the system).

I got the following output:

Unpacking replacement python-uno ...
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/python-uno_2.2.1-2ubuntu1_i386.deb (--unpack):
 fork failed: Cannot allocate memory
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
 fork failed: Cannot allocate memory
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
 fork failed: Cannot allocate memory

Can this be related to this bug?

If dpkg is allocating huge amounts of memory, the system will start to
swap and become unresponsive.

Since a kernel compile will bring the system down, there is potentially
other memory leaks.

[Bug 87870] Re: Cannot connect (terminating on signal 15)

2007-06-05 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Sorry, I don't run feisty anymore.

I had to go back to edgy due to a number of serious bugs.

Someone else needs to give you the debug output.

[Bug 109208] Re: crashed when performing search

I have confirmed this bug.

I'm on edgy now, using last-exit 4-1 built from source and this bug also
appears there.

Maybe this is a Mono problem?

[Bug 102498] Re: High load and extremely unresponsive system

2007-04-04 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
I've run a memcheck, no errors reported.

I've tried to copy files from NTFS and etx3 partitions in edgy. The load
was very high also, but that may be caused by using USB 1.1

Anyway, on edgy the system was responsive, with occasional mouse pointer
lockups.

So I think the load is not a problem, I just thought it was.

Like I said the problem on feisty is new. I have been running feisty for
a long time. It is has been rock solid, until recently.

[Bug 102498] High load and extremely unresponsive system

2007-04-03 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-13-generic

Using latest feisty.

I have problems with very high loads which makes my system unresponsive
and the disk usage is very heavy.

This problem can be reproduced in two ways:

1) Having firefox open, run aptitude dist-upgrade
2) Copy an ISO file to a USB stick (my laptop is using USB 1.1)

It started one week or so ago. It happened with 2.6.20-12-generic also.

This is a IBM Thinkpad T23 with 256 mb ram.

Some of my log files (like kern.log) are screwed up.

2. Take a file big enough (mine was a 35 MB Morphix ISO), copy it to the memory
