[Bug 277309] Re: Missing suspend icon with non-human theme

2009-06-18 Thread Christoph Langner
steveb001, your problem is really another issue. The problem inside this
bug is, that the icon is missing. Please take a look at the screenshot
inside the second posting http://launchpadlibrarian.net/18143355
/Screenshot-Shut%20Down%20the%20Computer.png The option to suspend or
hibernate is there, only the icon is missing. If your resumed and the
option to resume another time, than this is for sure another issue

[Bug 331235] [NEW] Alsdorf doesn't work with composite enabled metacity

2009-02-18 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsdorf

When i enable compositing within metacity via

$ gconftool-2 -s --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager
true

(of course you will have to disable compiz for this) and generate a
popup with

$ notify-send "test" "this is a test"

(or with rhytmbox) I don't get a popup. When you disable compositing
again

$ gconftool-2 -s --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager
false

you will have the notification messages back.

[Bug 326990] [NEW] Lingot 0.7.6 is out, Jaunty still has 0.7.4

2009-02-08 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lingot

According to http://mirrors.zerg.biz/nongnu/lingot/ version 0.7.6 of
lingot was published a year ago. Jaunty still contains version 0.7.6. A
update to this version would be great, since a lot is missing inside
0.7.4. I compile 0.7.6 under intrepid and it worked fine... It would be
great if you could get the current version into Jaunty.

[Bug 301028] Re: Cannot set resolution higher than 800x600 when running Jaunty Jackalope through VirtualBox

2009-04-03 Thread Christoph Langner
That's probably not an issue with ubuntu, but with VirtualBox.
VirtualBox 2.1.4 doesn't know about Xserver 1.6. To run Jaunty within
VirtualBox and to be able to choose the resolution, you've got to wait
until sun releases the next version or try the Beta of VirtualBox 2.2.
With VirtualBox 2.2 it's possible to compile the kernel modules. It's
even possible to run Compiz inside a virtual machine ;) http

virtualbox/

[Bug 361256] [NEW] Framerate of webcam with uvcvideo is too low

2009-04-14 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

I own a Trust 2MP Auto Focus Webcam which worked very good on Jaunty
until a couple of weeks ago. Right now i noticed that with the latest
updates of Jaunty the webcam delivers less frames per seconds than it
used to show. In other words i see a stop-motion movie. Usually it has
up to 30 frames/sec and, but my guess it is now working with 5
frames/second. Others noticed this too (see bug #220595)

[Bug 348834] [NEW] Can't print on HP 4000N with Jaunty

2009-03-26 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hplip

I own a HP 4000 with a HP Jetdirect 615n printserver, which makes my
printer a HP 4000N. I can print via the network from several other
ubuntu systems running Ubuntu Hardy or Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex. But when I
try to print from my test system with Jaunty the print fails.

When I print from Jaunty the job gets delivered to the printer, it
receives data and says "Processing job". But after that nothing happens.
The printer stays this way for hours. No page - even the cups testpage -
gets printed when I print from Jaunty.

I tried to find a log entry, but my access_log shows that the printjob
was successful

But when i try to get signals via

nothing happens. irw doesn't give a single line of output. When i
restart lirc with

and repeat

[Bug 63766] [network-admin] network-admin can be run without root-rights

2006-10-03 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

I don't know if it is a bug or feature. But if it is a feature, I think
it's a secruity hole. Right now it is possible in Ubuntu Edgy Eft to
open network-admin with user rights and change the network settings.
Just open network-admin out of the settings-menu or type

# network-admin

inside a shell. After you changed some settings you'll find the changes
inside /etc/network/interfaces. I don't think this is a good thing. My
network-admin version is

# network-admin --version
Gnome network-admin 2.15.5

The rights on my interfaces file are set to the defaults

# ls -al /etc/network/interfaces
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 282 2006-10-03 15:58 /etc/network/interfaces

Yes, only users who are inside the "admin" group may change the network
settings this way. I guess this is a nice feature for people who migrate
from windows, but it scares the heck of of me... ;)

BTW: The same thing affects users-admin an all other tools out of gnome-
system-tools

Isn't it risky to be able to execute all those system tools without
getting the necessary rights first?

[Bug 373576] Re: VNC server not sending updates to client

2009-05-18 Thread Christoph Langner
I can confirm this issue, i tried

 * RealVNC Viewer P4.5(r21561) on Windows XP SP3
 * UltraVNC 1.0.5.6 on Windows XP SP3
 * Vinagre 2.26.1 on Jaunty

als clients. No client work, i always see only a static picture on the
client side, but the interaction between client/server works.

[Bug 393770] [NEW] Why does swfdec-mozilla calls itself "Shockwave Flash 9.0 r999"

2009-06-30 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: swfdec-mozilla

On ubuntuusers.de we have quite often people who complain that Adobe
Flash isn't working properly. They say that they installed everything
correctly and that "Extras -> Add-Ons -> Plugins" say that Shockwave
Flash is installed. But the confusing thing is that this is not "Adobe
Flash", it's swfdec-mozilla.

So my question is, why does swfdec-mozilla calls itself "Shockwave Flash
9.0 r999" inside the settings of Firefox&Co. This is very confusing for
users and supporters since the name and the version number don't give a
hint that swfdec-mozilla is used instead of Adobe Flash? Can't we rename
that to "swfdec-mozilla 0.8.2-1ubuntu1"?

not vinagre since other vnc clients have the same problem connecting to
vino.

I can reproduce this problem too. Things you need

 * Nvidia graphics card
 * Proprietary nvidia driver version 180.44-0ubuntu1 or even 185.18.14

The best way to see the flicker is to watch a movies inside totem in
full screen and tune up/down the volume with media keys on a keyboard.
The flicker occours when the notifications fades in and when it fades
out again.

[Bug 387367] [NEW] Warn people when they install outdated version of Ubuntu

2009-06-15 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I support quite a lot at the german loko ubuntuusers.de. I often notice
that novice Ubuntu users install outdated versions of Ubuntu. Right now
someone installed Ubuntu Breezy and wondered why he was not able to
install any software etc... Those people don't do this by purpose, they
install whatever version of Ubuntu they find out of lack of information.

Would it be possible to add a warning to ubiquity, so that when a user
installs an outdated version he gets the information that

 * He is installing an outdated version
 * That the support for his version will end in only X months OR that the the
support ended and that he won't get any updates nor will he be able to install
additional software
 * That he should either install the current LTS or the current version of
Ubuntu

This way people will be better informed and save time.

[Bug 312460] [NEW] It's not possible to create a user who can shut down the system without being in "admin"-group

2008-12-30 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: policykit-gnome

I'm working with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex which runs policykit 0.9. I tried
to configure my system in a way so that other a user "foo" can shut down
the system while other users are logged into my system. But user "foo"
should not be inside the admin-group. He should only be able to shut
down the system in the case other user are logged into it.

To do this i ran polkit-gnome-authorization and added the user, who
should be able to shut down the system to following keys

org.freedesktop.hal.power-management.shutdown
org.freedesktop.hal.power-management.shutdown-multiple-sessions

Even after i restarted the whole machine my second user can't shut down
the system. When i try to do a shutdown via the fast-user-switch applet
the user get's logged out and i switch to a user user who is also logged
into the system. When i try to shutdown the system via "System -> Shut
Down" inside the panel i can only choose user who are inside the admin-
group.

I attached screenshot with the right i set.

[Bug 304969] Re: Hardy: Flash can't be installed since install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz can't be retrieved

2008-12-19 Thread Christoph Langner
@Daniel, this is a really bad idea

1. Books, guides, howtos all over the world describe the installation of
Adobe Flash by installing flashplugin-nonfree out of Ubuntu's
repositories

2. "Applications -> Add/remove" will install flashplugin-nonfree. This
will propably the most common way to install Flash.

3. There is no warning, when you install flashplugin-nonfree, that the
installation failed, when you use Synaptic or GAI.

flashplugin-nonfree inside hardy has to be fixed as soon as possible...

Sometimes it happens, that when i open a video file (.avi) totem starts
