[Bug 241731] Re: no sound through ALSA

I think this is an update problem from Hardy:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

[Bug 241731] Re: no sound through ALSA

2008-06-21 Thread Christophe Dumez
No, looks like this is not simply an update problem.

I tried this kernel (with restricted modules installable and installed):
Linux chris-laptop 2.6.26-1-generic #1 SMP Fri Jun 13 13:22:43 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

I still don't have any sound (exception GDM intro, but no gnome intro
after login).

[Bug 239757] Re: Rhythmbox jams after other apps use ALSA

2008-06-21 Thread Christophe Dumez
I would like to confirm this bug too. I first experienced it when I
upgraded to Hardy (I updated to Intrepid and it is still buggy).

I think it is related to the flash plugin. I noticed that I have
playback problems in rhythmbox only when Firefox is running (not all the
time, probably when there is or there was flash running). The symptoms
are the sames as the bug reporter's.

I double-click on a track to play it, no sound and the progress bar does
not move. I have to close/kill rhythmbox, close firefox, open rhythmbox
again and now playback is working. This happens really often.

I would be happy to provide more specific information (or make some
tests on your behalf) if someone is willing to fix this annoying bug.

[Bug 239757] Re: Rhythmbox jams after other apps use ALSA

2008-06-21 Thread Christophe Dumez
This is very easy to reproduce here :
1. Launch firefox
2. Play a song in rhythmbox
3. Pause the song in rhythmbox
4. Go to youtube and play a video
5. Pause the video on youtube
6. Resume the song playback in rhythmbox <- this fails and you need to kill
rhythmbox.

This bug was introduced when switching to pulseaudio, could this be
related?

[Bug 239757] Re: Rhythmbox jams after other apps use ALSA

2008-06-21 Thread Christophe Dumez
I'm attaching rhythmbox debug output.

Firefox is running and I played a youtube video. Then I ran rhythmbox in
debug mode and tried to play a song. It failed and I had to kill it. I
hope this output can be of some help.

2008-06-21 Thread Christophe Dumez
Wow, I have just installed libflashsupport package and it looks like it
is working fine now.

So it is related to flash and pulseaudio after all.

I got the idea from the ubuntu french forum where users are getting the
same bug: http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=220138

[Bug 241731] Re: no sound through ALSA

2008-06-23 Thread Christophe Dumez
Last dist-upgrade fixed packages problems. However, sound is still missing with
this kernel:
Linux chris-laptop 2.6.26-2-generic #1 SMP Thu Jun 19 15:51:43 UTC 2008 i686

Note: I checked and my volume is up and sound was not mute. Moreover,
sound works perfectly with hardy's kernel.

Following this tutorial

I used to have the same problem when I updated to Hardy beta but it was fixed
before release:

Are you sure you didn't drop an important patch when upgrading the
kernel and alsa? Looks like a regression.

[Bug 147119] Re: network manager gives couldn't activate dialup service warning

2008-06-24 Thread Christophe Charlot
Hello, I just discovered this bug and how to connect with a ppp
connection with network manager.

So, my connection is set up and working : I use an USB UMTS modem (Icon
2) with orange (france) as a provider

I did set up my connection according to Alexander's instruction above,
but NM still thinks I'm not connected and so I can't access my VPN.

Which logs and/or configurations files do you need ?

Thanks a lot for your work !!

[Bug 234408] Re: Xorg fails to execute on Laptop when using battery

2008-06-14 Thread Christophe Dumez
It happened to me again yesterday. Once again, it happened after a
suspend failure and an unclean laptop shutdown (press power button 5
secs).

Could someone look into this please? This bug is really annoying and it
is even more annoying because suspend is so unreliable. Yesterday, I was
in a meeting and my laptop was unusable because of this bug (and I
didn't bring the power adapter with me).

If you need more information, I will be happy to provide it.

[Bug 110742] Re: GForge Install Fails, Apache Config Problems

2007-06-01 Thread Christophe Dumez
To whoever this bug is assigned. There is indeed a problem : gforge is
not doing its job well and the user/group will be apache:apache on
Ubuntu but www-data:www-data on Debian.

the setup script is parsing /etc/issue to check the distro but the
Ubuntu case is not considered by the script so we fall back to default :
apache:apache

I'm joining the patch.

[Bug 112306] Re: libtorrent name used by both rTorrent and qBitTorrent

2007-05-04 Thread Christophe Dumez
I already renamed our libtorrent for debian release to rblibtorrent. The
problem is that the libtorrent included by Debian (and used by rtorrent)
conflicts with our libtorrent. The .so file is the same
(/usr/lib/libtorrent.so). Hence, my debian packages take this into
consideration add clearly declare that both libtorrents conflict. This
is unfortunate but this is not a bug I think. I don't see how I could
allow the two libs to be installed at the same time.

there is:

Ok I found where the bug -> Knetworkmanager!

Since a few days knetworkmanager is displaying that I'm disconnected
whereas I'm connected and I configured my network using it... I closed
knetworkanager and internet came back on all my kde apps.

So there are at least two bugs:
- knetworkmanager is displaying that I'm disconnected whereas I am
- KDE apps should be able to connect even if knetworkmanager says I'm
disconnected

A friend of mine is experiencing the same problem and he is to one who
told me how to get my internet back.

Hi.

Salut,
Je vois que le bug a été fermé avec un workaround mais je voudrais poser une

[Bug 223724] Re: package scrollkeeper 0.3.14-15ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-04-29 Thread christophe-marie
Actually, the bug solved by itself. I was to put a message here. Since
scrollkeeper had failed to upgrade, the installer threw a dpkg-
reconfigure -a. Then scrollkeeper upgrade locked again on the same file
: /usr/share/gnome/help/blackjack/el/blackjack.xml (I had the time to
note the filename this time).

The last time, it had bugged after I had tried to make this file being
ignored in pressing C-c. So I just waited, and the upgrade managed to
pass. Sorry for the time loss.

I'm attaching anyway what was in /var/log dist-upgrade/.

[Bug 123275] Re: [needs-packaging] GanttProject

2008-04-29 Thread Christophe Besson
OK. I commited my work on the related branch (all files + the deb
package). I tested my package on hardy with Java 6 and on gutsy with
Java 5 , and both are working well. I am not used with the specific
Ubuntu packaging policies and I need some help to propose it as a new
package as wished by the community. Moreover, I know my package needs
extra tests...

[Bug 234408] [NEW] Xorg fails to execute on Laptop when using battery

2008-05-23 Thread Christophe Dumez
Public bug reported:

I am using a DELL XPS M1330 Laptop with latest Hardy and I first
experienced this bug after I updated from Gutsy to Hardy (When it was
still Beta).

When my laptop is using battery power (not plugged in), it happens that
Xorg fails to launch. The problem does not happen everytime (I don't
know why) but once it happened, the only way to fix it is to plug the
laptop in (on sector power) and reboot.

The error given by Xorg (on a blue background) is the following (Translated
from french):
"The server (daemon) authentication folder (daemon/ServAuthDir) is defined at
/var/lib/gdm but it does not belong to user 108 and to group 118. Please fix
folder rights or configuration and restart GDM."

Although the dialog has an "OK" button, it is impossible to press it. I have to
press CTRL+ALT+F2 to get a terminal. Then I can log in using my user ("chris").
However, I get the following error on login :
"Error: No directory, logging in with HOME=/
- bash: cannot create temp file for here document : filesystem is read-only."

Indeed, /home is empty and the filesystem is in read only mode.

Reminded: When the problem happens (always on battery power), I can
reboot any number of time, it still won't work. The only way to make it
work again is to plug the laptop on sector power (I do not change

[Bug 283212] [NEW] kernel panic in 2.6.27

2008-10-14 Thread Christophe Dumez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.27

I have just updated from Hardy to Intrepid and since then I experience random
kernel panic (quite often, making system unusable). I believe this is kernel
panic because:
- System is totally freezing (unresponsive)
- No ping response
- All laptop LEDs are blinking.

I believe this is related to Wifi driver because it does not seem to be
happening when disabling Wifi (hardware switch).
My laptop is a DELL XPS M1330 (shipped with Ubuntu). My network card is an
intel 4965agn.

Last working kernel (I tested) was 2.6.24.

Note: There does not seem to be any interesting output in logs...

[Bug 284867] [NEW] too hard to use "sudo apt-get" behind a proxy with authentication

2008-10-17 Thread Christophe Bliard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sudo

% lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

The configuration needed to get "sudo apt-get" working when behind a
proxy with authentication is not trivial. Here are some ideas to enhance
it.

Here is my environment : I am on an enterprise network, behind a proxy
requiring authentication for http. I want to access a repository server
from the outside world.

To use apt-get with the proxy, I configured the proxy with the GNOME
proxy capplet. I set the proxy host to "proxy.myenterprise.com" and
proxy port to "90" in the configuration tab, and a list of hosts to
exclude in the advanced tab, like "localhost" and "*.myenterprise.com"
in the list.

When I open a terminal, the environment variable http_proxy is set to
"http://proxy.myenterprise.com:90/"; which is correct, but it is not
enough to let me get some data from the outside with "sudo apt-get
update". In fact the proxy refuses my request because authentication is
required. To provide my authentication credentials, I need to manually
set http_proxy to "http://username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:90/".
Then "sudo apt-get update" works.

But I need a little more : we have a local mirror of the repository for
the binary packages on our enterprise network (which is
debmirror.myenterprise.com), but not for the source packages so we still
use "archive.ubuntu.com" as repository.

If I try to "sudo apt-get update", it will try to reach
debmirror.myenterprise.com by using the proxy, but it won't work. I mentionned
that I configured the GNOME proxy capplet to ignore host matching
"localhost,*.myenterprise.com". That's why I have the $no_proxy environment
variable set to "*.myenterprise.com". But "sudo apt-get update" still does not
work the way it should. The reason it does not work are :
 * the environment variable $no_proxy is not preserved when calling sudo, in
contrary to $http_proxy. To see it, run "sudo -V" as root: it gives a list of
the environment variables that are checked/removed/preserved.
 * $no_proxy environment variable does not allow wildcards : it should rather
be no_proxy="localhost,myenterprise.com"

So to have the environment variable $no_proxy preserved when calling
sudo, I have to add the following line in my sudoers file :

Defaultsenv_keep+="no_proxy"

And to have some correct $http_proxy and $no_proxy variables, I have to
define them in my .bashrc. When I do all this, it works like a charm: I
can access to inside repositories, or outside repository. But to get it
working, you need to know a lot of system things.

So here are my ideas:
 * In the GNOME proxy capplet, in the advanced tab, have a checkbox "the proxy
needs authentication" which allows to enter authentication credentials. This
could be stored safely in the GNOME keyring. So they can be used to set
$http_proxy to "http://username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:port/".
 * sudo already preserve the $http_proxy environment variable (bug #194238
mentions it). I think it should also preserve the $no_proxy environment
variable to ignore some hosts for the proxy.
 * the GNOME proxy capplet allows to enter some hosts to ignore, but it fails
to translate them correctly in the $no_proxy environment variable. It needs a
filter to remove wildcards and keep only valid hosts (for example, "192.168.*"
cannot be in $no_proxy in the "192.168." form, but *.myenterprise.com can with
the "myenterprise.com" form).

I assigned this bug to sudo because from the 3 problems I exposed,
modifying the sudoers file to preserve the $no_proxy variable is the
only thing a normal user cannot do. But I could also have assigned this
bug to the GNOME proxy capplet.

But my BT mouse still doesn't connect.
Even I I remove it from the paired list, when I rty to pair it, the computer

And If I want it to be working, i need to do : sudo hidd --search (when mouse

I have a lot of "wrong command queue 31, command id 0x0" in my logs.
Apparently, this is due to the patch above.

2008-11-02 Thread Christophe Dumez
Yes. I confirm that I did not have any kernel panic on Hardy with hardy
kernel. Then, when I upgraded to Intrepid, I started to experience
kernel panics. Thus, I tried to use Hardy kernel on intrepid but I
experienced kernel panics anyway. This is odd but true.

[Bug 290188] [NEW] gnome-screensaver segfaults after resuming from suspend

due to gnome-screensaver segfaulting.

2008-10-30 Thread Christophe Dumez
Very bad news. I have just experienced another kernel panic although I'm
using linux-backport-modules.

I confirm that kernel panics happen a lot less often but they are still
happening.

For me, the kernel panic happened although I was not using my laptop.
The laptop was simply connected to the wifi and internet (no particular
activity).

[Bug 289060] [NEW] named bind9 apparmor profile error

2008-10-25 Thread Christophe Vandeplas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bind9

Bind doesn't start when IPv6 is enabled.
/var/log/messages tells me this:
Oct 25 12:42:53 minerva kernel: [ 2229.682759] type=1503
audit(1224931373.808:14): operation="inode_permission" requested_mask="::r"
denied_mask="::r" fsuid=103 name="/proc/5722/net/if_inet6" pid=5723
profile="/usr/sbin/named"

This means apparmor is blocking access to the /proc//net/if_inet6
file

Apparmor has the following configuration:
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.named:27: /proc/net/if_inet6 r,

This line should be changed in: /proc/**/net/if_inet6 r,

Restarting apparmor and bind with the new apparmor configuration
confirms it works now.

[Bug 289183] [NEW] xorg.log file badly generated

2008-10-25 Thread Christophe Dumez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

I ran a sudo "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" to regenerate my
xorg.log file and now it is almost empty (attached to this report).

Since then, metacity and other apps are crashing:

[Bug 280028] Re: tooltips are not displayed correctly

2008-10-25 Thread Christophe Dumez
This is not an upgrade problem. I have just made a clean install of
Ubuntu intrepid release candidate and I still experience this problem.

[Bug 280028] Re: tooltips are not displayed correctly

2008-10-25 Thread Christophe Dumez
Ok. This is not a bug (although I don't know why it happened in Intrepid
and not in Hardy.

Do to:
Preferences -> Appearance -> Customize -> Colors -> Tooltips

Make sure the background isn't set to black. Color #F5F5B5 should do
fine :)

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid
