Finally I found the time for debugging. Rhythmbox doesn't show the same behavior in the debugger as in normal mode. With normal program startup, the program exits on copying the music on the phone, the window closes, it disappeares from task bar and system tray. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox When I connect my Nokia N95 to the PC with USB and the phone's "Media Player Mode", it shows up in Rhythmbox an I can start sending some music files to it. But after transferring some files, the application segfaults. I have to re-connect the phone and to restart Rhythmbox repeatedly to get all files transferred. I found out, that the crashes only occur, after you close browser windows or tabs.
