Re: [Bug 1227211] Re: 12.10 to 13.04 upgrade failed

2013-09-18 Thread clueless wonder
I was trying to upgrade from 12.10 to 13.04 because my desktop text has
turned to small boxes. The upgrade still hasn't finished but it fixed the
text issue (for now).
It may not be a bug, the terminal told me to post it as a bug though so I
did. I suspect the reason that it reported as a bug was that there was a
problem related to the libudev dependencies before I tried to upgrade.
I'm not sure about this though

On Wednesday, September 18, 2013, Quinn Balazs wrote:

[Bug 1227211] [NEW] 12.10 to 13.04 upgrade failed

2013-09-18 Thread clueless wonder
Public bug reported:

Bug: /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log and /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log
upgrade was aborted

The terminal asked me to report this bug when the upgrade failed.

But There was another problem, possibly related to my text turning to boxes:
Dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libudev1:i386:
Libudev1:i386 depends on libc6 (>= 2.17); however:
Version of lib6:i386 on system is 2.15-0ubuntu20.1

Once I updated again with apt-get update and then ran apt-get upgrade it
worked

[Bug 477373] Re: Freezing sound after upgrade to Karmic

2010-04-06 Thread Clueless
I have a somewhat similar problem ( intermittent stuttering audio, then
no sound at all ) with an ATI card running the latest beta of Ubuntu
10.04 as of today. I went into the PulseAudio volume control and
disabled the HDMI audio device for my ATI card ( Radeon HD 4670 ). I
also made sure the my Audio was set to Analog Audio only.

I don't use HDMI even though my video card has HDMI support.

I don't know whether this could be a problem with the open source ati
driver.I previously used the fglrx driver but lost that choice when
I upraded to Lucid from Ubuntu 9.10. It appears that there is no closed
source driver available yet for use in Lucid.

2010-03-21 Thread clueless
This is an oldie, but goody. I'm a new user (Ubuntu) and have had this
error for awhile now. I have read through the previous posts with great
interest and optomism, yet, I cannot access a terminal after Alt/F2.
Once I get past that little problem, I think I will be ok. Is there
anyone still out there who can lend a hand to a fish out of water?

[Bug 434050] Re: flash not running in 9.10 alpha 64 bit

2009-09-23 Thread Clueless
I found the problem, I upgrade from 9.04 32 bit to 9.10 alpha 64 bit.
I happen to have the 32 bit version of the libflashplayer.so in my local
directory .mozilla/plugins

I removed the plugin but now firefox couldn't find a suitable plugin to
load. I went to Adobe website and it allowed me to download a falsh
plugin but I was unable to install it as gdebi failed with a wrong
architecture error message.

finally I downloaded Adobe beta 64 bit flashplayer plugin and now my
flash pages are all working.

Users who switch from 32bit to 64 bit will have this issue, there
probaly needs to be a flashplayer plugin included with firefox for 64
bit users, if that is not already being done ..

[Bug 433596] [NEW] can't login into ubuntu 9.10 alpha 5 64 bit

2009-09-20 Thread Clueless
Public bug reported:

I am upgrading from ubuntu 9.04 32 bit to 9.10 64 bit .

I decided to install ubuntu 9.10 alpha 5 (latest), I downloaded the 64
bit iso image then did a new install while maintaining my local files
which reside in a different partition.

I wiped out the root directory and in the process was all swtiching from
intel cpu (E5000 series) to AMD 64 phenom II 720.

The install worked ok, however before start up, I encountered a disk
fail error that I corrected with fsck.It seems to be happening at
the same place with dffferent hard drives so it is most likely a bug.

When I finally got to the login prompt, I entered my password the screen
flickered a bit but I wasn't launched into gnome as expected but stayed
in login screen.

I tried to switch to command prompt login but CTRL ALT F1 was not
working. I finally switched my session to xterm which worked and I am
now trying to upgrade my 9.10 with the latest update. I am hoping that
will fix the problem.

If it doesn't work I will switch to 9.04 64 and try a dist upgrade from
there ..

RE: [Bug 430002] Re: compiz partially uninstalled in upgrade from 9.04

2009-09-15 Thread Clueless

I used update-manager to upgrade, however my upgrade took the whole day ..
before leaving for work (8:00am) I started the process and it downloaded all
the necessary files required for upgrade.

When I came back from work (6:00pm), the process hadn't completed it was
waiting for my intervention about whether to keep or overwrite one of
the config files in /etc ..

I then resumed the upgrade (it had downloaded most of the files, and was
about to start checking my system before removing any incompatible
files.. ) and the whole process was completed 3+ hrs later

hope this helps ..

[Bug 430002] [NEW] compiz partially uninstalled in upgrade from 9.04

2009-09-15 Thread Clueless
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to the latest alpha version of 9.10 , the upgrade process
uninstalled several packages including compiz.

I expected compiz to be working after the upgrade, it wasn't.

When the upgrade was completed, I had lost the 3d effects and I didn't
have a window manager. My windows had no outer border.

After updating my system by checking for new updates, the problem hadn't
been resolved.

I went into synaptic manager and could see that several compiz
components were installed e.g compiz-core, but compiz itself wasn't
installed.

I manually installed compiz , then switched on 3d effects and everything
was back to normal.

I suspect that there is a glitch somewhere in the update process as far
as compiz is concerned.

I believe I am using Ubuntu Hardy Alpha 5, I originally started with

Source Package is Nautilus.

I am trying to access my files on other computers using the Network

When I try to see my network I get the error dialog saying: Couldn't

[Bug 191028] Re: Nautilus Screen gets garbled on Hardy Alpha 4

2008-02-15 Thread Clueless
I haven't had the time yet to post a screen shot but I have been able to
more or less reproduce this behavior.

I have 3 hard drives on my machine and Hardy automatically mounted these
drives and partitions to the /media folder. My hard drives have both
the XFS and EXT3 filesystem.

I happen to have specified a background on my nautilus window when I am
in icon view.

When opening nautilus on a hard drive mounted in the /media directory
was that the background was garbled , I could barely see the icons for
the folders and files on my drive.

When I reset the background by dropping a new background image for my
window every thing looked ok for a while.

The next problem I noticed is that is I switch users after my nautilus
window has gotten messed up, X doesn't bring up a login window for me to
login as a new user, I instead see a white screen where I can't do any
thing.

My only recourse at this time is to go to the console CTRL+F1 and
restart the gdm service.

[Bug 191031] [NEW] X.org 7.3 window not aligned properly (Hardy Alpha 4)

2008-02-11 Thread Clueless
Public bug reported:

I installed the latest hardy Alpha 4 release and noticed that screen was
not being properly filled. I have a 1920x1080 Samsung 46in TV and I
noticed that the gnome shutdown icon was barely visible on the Top Right
Hand of the screen. The Left Hand Side of the display wasn't aligned
properly as if someone had moved part of the screen a little bit to the
right obsuring part of the right hand side.

when I enabled the nvidia dinary driver and rebooted the screen was now
properly aligned, this suggests that the native (free) driver for my
video card Nvidia 7920 GS had some possible display alignment issues.

[Bug 139027] Screens & Graphics not setting correct resolution

2007-09-11 Thread Clueless
Public bug reported:

Problem with System --> Preferences --> Screens & Graphics

1. I have a Dell 24" LCD screen which is correctly detected by window.
However the max resolution of this LCD screen is 1920x1200

The resolution is auto set to 1792x1344.

I had the nv driver and switched to proprietary driver, then rebooted
machine. When Ubuntu started the screen res was 1792x1344. I initially
thought that there was a problem 'coz I could only see parts of the
panel. When I moved mouse towards edge of scree I discovered that the
window could pan and scroll the missing portion into view. A visual
cue would have been helpful here.

I tried to change the res. to 1900x1200 but I couldn't see the choice
for this res. I thenswitched to 1920x1200 LCD monitor but it to didn't
show the native resolution in the list of available resolutions.

2. My LCD is 60 Hz but the dialog is always picking 50 Hz even if I
switch to different resolutions

3. When I switch resolutions the screen resolution is not being set.
In one case the window appeared frozen. I kept trying afain several
times until it finally accepted 1600x1200 @ 50Hz.

[Bug 136271] Gutsy Tribe 5: Kernel Module error when enabling Nvidia restricted driver

2007-08-30 Thread Clueless
Public bug reported:

I have an intel core duo 6600 with Nvidia 8800 GTS.

I installed the Tribe 5 (7.10) CD every thing worked ok until I tried to
enable the Restricted Driver for NVidia ...

The 1st time I tried to enable the rstricted driver. I got an error
from Synaptic ( I think) saying it was unable to find the source for the
driver.

I then started Synaptic and went to the place where Software sources are
defined. I enabled commercial apps ( I don't think this was necessary
), then refreshed my sources.

Went back to Restricted Driver dialog and enabled (latest card).
There were 2 entries for nvidia, one was for the latest cards and
another was generic. These 2 entries are confusing, I was able to
enable both choices ( should that be allowed? I don't think you can
have 2 drivers at the same time .. )

Synaptic went ahead and installed the drivers then asked me to restart
my machine.

When I rebooted X failed to load. The error message was to the effect
that it was unable to find the kernel module ..

[Bug 106639] gdm never starts in Ubuntu Feisty

2007-04-14 Thread Clueless
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Ubuntu Edgy .. to Ubuntu Feisty Beta Today ...

When I restarted my machine , I don't see a splash screen. I only see a
round icon showing that the machine is loading.

I then stopped the gdm service and used kdm instead.

kdm login manager then logs me into gnome without a problem.

I have always had a crash at login using my default ubuntu login . The
system has always reverted to the default gnome login manager under
Edgy.

In this case I no longer see a crash but an hourglass icon that never
ends ..

below is a snap shot of my system config:
