For Ubuntu Focal the dkms package is not required as the driver is supplied in the kernel package. I recommend removing zfs-dkms to avoid this happening in the future. ** Changed in: zfs-linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: zfs-linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1873198 Title: package zfs-dkms 0.8.3-1ubuntu12 failed to install/upgrade: installed zfs-dkms package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zfs-linux/+bug/1873198/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1872945] Re: risc-v doubles getting clobbered somehow

[Bug 1872945] [NEW] risc-v doubles getting clobbered somehow
Public bug reported: I've been noticing that doubles get clobbered in stress-ng. I managed to whittle it down to the following reproducer that can trip the issue on a risc-v system running the Linux risc-v-qemu 5.4.0-24-generic kernel. This also occurs on other older kernels too. I've tested this with gcc-9, gcc-10 and clang-9 too. #include #include #include #include #include double timeval_to_double(const struct timeval *tv) { return (double)tv->tv_sec + ((double)tv->tv_usec / 100.0); } int main(void) { struct timeval tv2, tv1; double t1; bool fail = false; gettimeofday(, NULL); t1 = timeval_to_double(); for (;;) { double t2; int tmp; gettimeofday(, NULL); t2 = timeval_to_double(); tmp = errno; if (t2 - t1 < 0.0) { printf("%f %f %f\n", t1, t2, t2 - t1); printf("START : %f %ld %ld (%lx %lx) errno=%d\n", t1, tv1.tv_sec, tv1.tv_usec, tv1.tv_sec, tv1.tv_usec, tmp); printf("NOW BAD: %f %ld %ld (%lx %lx) errno=%d\n", t2, tv2.tv_sec, tv2.tv_usec, tv2.tv_sec, tv2.tv_usec, tmp); fail = true; } else { if (fail) { printf("NOW OK: %f %ld %ld (%lx %lx) errno=%d\n", t2, tv2.tv_sec, tv2.tv_usec, tv2.tv_sec, tv2.tv_usec, tmp); } fail = false; } } } Run the code (compiled with -O0, -O1 or even O2) and after some (long) random-ish time I see: ./a.out 1575050049.059796 0.00 -1575050049.059796 START : 1575050049.059796 1575050049 59796 (5de15b41 e994) errno=0 NOW BAD: 0.00 1575050053 437619 (5de15b45 6ad73) errno=0 NOW OK: 1575050053.460829 1575050053 460829 (5de15b45 7081d) errno=0 So the t2 value is zero which is a bit weird. The integer values for the tv struct are sane though, so it appears not to be a bad struct value returned from the kernel. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: High Status: New ** Affects: qemu (Ubuntu) Importance: High Status: New ** Also affects: qemu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => High ** Changed in: qemu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => High -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1872945 Title: risc-v doubles getting clobbered somehow To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1872945/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1854480] Re: zfs_arc_max not working anymore in zfs 0.8.1
I've experimented with this on eoan and focal (ZFS 0.8.1 and ZFS 0.8.3) on a 4GB VM image. I set the /etc/modprobe.d/zfs.conf as follows: options zfs zfs_arc_max=134217728 # 128 MB And rebooted. I then exercised the zfs with various greps and git logs on the linux git repository while running: while true; do cat /proc/spl/kstat/zfs/arcstats | grep -m 1 size | awk '{ print $3 / (1024 * 1024) }'; sleep 1; done The output shows that one does get arc sizes greater than the 128MB while doing a lot of I/O but it settles down to sub 128MB once the I/O activity is finished: 2.93295 2.93295 2.93295 63.8354 131.395 127.909 148.942 128.498 138.224 145.271 133.244 134.122 138.132 144.814 129.4 134.788 135.666 140.428 143.811 146.734 132.323 136.709 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 143.225 130.353 130.34 130.34 130.34 138.63 140.16 139.826 139.826 139.826 139.921 139.921 133.32 122.35 115.929 111.941 110.478 111.219 111.219 Two observations: 1. The driver does some sanity checks; if zfs_arc_max is too small (< 64MB) or too large (> physical memory size) then the setting is ignored and the default is used. One can double check if the setting has been updated by checking with c_max, e.g.: grep c_max /proc/spl/kstat/zfs/arcstats c_max 4134217728 If c_max is not the same as zfs_arc_max then the zfs_arc_max has worked. Can you sanity check that? 2. With a high amount of throughput the arcstats show that the "size" stat can overshot the zfs_arc_max setting but once I/O has completed it will setting down to the threshold set. This setting is not updated directly and is only sync'd during an arc_kstat update. So maybe it's a snapshot that maybe transient and possibly not completely up to date. Keeping the stats exactly up to date would cause a performance bottleneck, so the stats are aggregated - I believe these values are not exactly 100% correct as there is a performance impact in gathering and summing the stats. Perhaps you could experiment with a low zfs_arc_max setting (e.g. 128MB 134217728) and see if this works OK and then bumping up the value to see if it stops working; then we can work out why it's going wrong at that point. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1854480 Title: zfs_arc_max not working anymore in zfs 0.8.1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zfs-linux/+bug/1854480/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1858495] Re: multiple long delays during kernel and userspace boot
I added initcall debug and got some more data: The first delay: # [ 2.846188] localhost.localdomain kernel: AES CTR mode by8 optimization enabled # [ 5.919313] localhost.localdomain kernel: raid6: avx2x4 gen() 21512 MB/s There are some silent initializations occuring between these two points, mainly crypto code such as ghash, crc32, ccrt10dif, raid0, raid, libcrc32c etc. A fairly long pause of ~600ms occurs during the hv_netvsc initialization, this is the Hyper-V network driver, so that's expected to have some time variation and is dependant on the host. The second delay: # [ 5.159028] localhost.localdomain kernel: EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null) # [ 8.385284] localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: systemd 237 running in.. I can't seem to seem to reproduce the long delay, I'm seeing ~100-250ms delays between the invocation of the mount and the mount completion. I wonder if this is still a H/W issue where my VMs are different machines and performing faster. Anyhow, with the debug enabled I believe there is little going on between these two points apart from an ext4 mount. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1858495 Title: multiple long delays during kernel and userspace boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-azure/+bug/1858495/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1858495] Re: multiple long delays during kernel and userspace boot
Some of the early kernel boot time variations occur when detecting and spinning up devices sda and sbd and reading the partition information. Given this is probably spinny disc media, one would expect variations of this kind in early boot. The other variations I can see are also due to probing of hardware, which again is probably expected. I'm finding it hard to see anything really too problematic with the kernel side boot timings given that we are dealing with H/W style variations in the boot. [Bug 1858495] Re: multiple long delays during kernel and userspace boot
Hi Ryan, I analysed the data from comment #6 using the journal.log from bug- bionic-baseline-after-templating-Standard-DS2-v2 and collated some notable places in the boot process and compared boots 1 through to 10. Attached are the results as a LibreOffice Calc spread sheet. The data shows a little bit of timing variance (which is not surprising) but on the whole the data looks very similar from boot to boot. [Bug 1847832] Re: Backport ZoL pull request 9203 into the official packages.
** Description changed: + == SRU Justification, EOAN == + + ZFS can deadlock, this can be sometimes triggered with a zfs rollback - + "the zfs_resume_fs() code path may cause zfs to spawn new threads as it + reinstantiates the suspended fs's zil. When a new thread is spawned, the + kernel may attempt to free memory for that thread by freeing some + unreferenced inodes. If it happens to select inodes that are a a part of + the suspended fs a deadlock will occur because freeing inodes requires + holding the fs's z_teardown_inactive_lock which is still held from the + suspend." + + == The Fix == + + Backport of ZFS upstream commit e7a2fa70c3b0d8c8cee2b484038bb5623c7c1ea9 + ("Fix deadlock in 'zfs rollback'") + + The backport is relatively simple context wiggle. + + == Test Case == + + This is hard to trigger so testing is non-trivial. To check for + regressions we run the entire Ubuntu ZFS regression test suite. Without + the fix rollbacks can very occasionally trip this issue. With the test, + it's not possible. + + == Regression Potential == + + The fix adds in an extra z_suspended flag to track suspended state and + adds an extra reference to stop the kernel from free'ing inodes on a + suspected file system. The changes are small and are well-used in + upstream ZFS so I believe if a regression was to have occurred it would + have been found by the regression testing. + + - Original Bug Report Below --- + Hopefully this is the correct bug tracker to report this on. Recently, I ran into a bug in ZFS as shipped in Ubuntu 19.10 that caused the kernel to deadlock and the system to eventually hang. I was advised by a ZFS on Linux project maintainer that this was a bug that was fixed in 0.8.2. The relevant pull request is here: https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/pull/9203 It would probably be a good idea to backport that pull request into 19.10's build of ZFS. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1847832 Title: Backport ZoL pull request 9203 into the official packages. [Bug 1847832] Re: Backport ZoL pull request 9203 into the official packages.
The fix in question is: commit e7a2fa70c3b0d8c8cee2b484038bb5623c7c1ea9 Author: Tom Caputi Date: Tue Aug 27 12:55:51 2019 -0400 Fix deadlock in 'zfs rollback' Currently, the 'zfs rollback' code can end up deadlocked due to the way the kernel handles unreferenced inodes on a suspended fs. Essentially, the zfs_resume_fs() code path may cause zfs to spawn new threads as it reinstantiates the suspended fs's zil. When a new thread is spawned, the kernel may attempt to free memory for that thread by freeing some unreferenced inodes. If it happens to select inodes that are a a part of the suspended fs a deadlock will occur because freeing inodes requires holding the fs's z_teardown_inactive_lock which is still held from the suspend. This patch corrects this issue by adding an additional reference to all inodes that are still present when a suspend is initiated. This prevents them from being freed by the kernel for any reason. [Bug 1852119] Re: Please add zfs modules to linux-raspi2
The Ubuntu kernel team recommends to have at least 4GB of free memory to run ZFS on slow backing store devices for nominal performance. Since there is OS overhead (kernel, userspace processes etc) a 4GB Raspberry Pi will perform sub-optimally. Note that the document you referenced in commet #1 states: "Computers that have less than 2 GiB of memory run ZFS slowly. 4 GiB of memory is recommended for normal performance in basic workloads. " Once you start to add in ZFS options such as compression and/or run scrubs on a slow device it is likely you may start to see high memory pressure issues occurring.
