Julian, like I said, please follow the progress of Bug #1064962.

Your issue probably involves more than this specific report, so please
stop commenting about it here.

alone is the cause of your issues. Please follow Bug #1064962 instead.

2012-11-27 Thread Conscious User
I can confirm the fix is working for the test case attached, and also
for the app that made me notice it in the first place.

@Luigi: the issues you're experiencing seem to be quite different of the
ones that motivated this report. I suggest filing a new one.

[Bug 1075263] [NEW] Items of a menubar built from GMenu do not always work

2012-11-05 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

In the attached example, the Quit menu item is supposed to work but
sometimes it does not. If you start and quit the example repeatedly, you
will eventually witness the Quit item having no effect when clicked.

This is happening with both Python 2 and Python 3, in both Quantal and
Precise.

However, it seems to be happening only with the mouse: the keyboard
accelerator (Ctrl+q) always works. Calling the action directly from dbus
with

gdbus call --session --dest org.gnome.test --object-path /org/gnome/test
--method org.gtk.Actions.Activate 'quit' [] {}

also seems to always work.

This issue seems exclusive to menus built with GMenu. Swallowed
GtkMenuBars seem to always work fine.

[Bug 541472] Re: Menu icons should not be 16x16 px

2012-09-18 Thread Conscious User
I'm not 100% sure on this, but this might not be very easy to patch. If
I remember correctly, icon sizes are read just once and never again. I
think simply changing the constant would work for *new* icons, but
wouldn't auto-resize the ones already rendered.

It's worth mentioning that the GNOME HIG itself hardcodes icon sizes:

http://developer.gnome.org/hig-book/3.5/icons-types.html.en

so I wouldn't be surprised if implementing auto-resizing is not very
easy.

[Bug 992635] [NEW] Static and dynamic shortcuts have different alignment

2012-05-01 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

As you can see in the attached screenshots (specifically, the "Compose"
and "Contacts" items), the alignment for static (when the app is closed)
and dynamic (when the app is open) shortcuts is different. I suppose the
latter is the correct one.

[Bug 939054] [NEW] HUD maximize button affects Dash

2012-02-22 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

Clicking on the HUD maximize button does nothing on the HUD itself, but
next time you open the Dash you can see it has actually affected the
Dash.

Steps to reproduce:
1 - Open Dash and maximize it.
2 - Close Dash, open HUD.
3 - Click on the HUD maximize button.
4 - Close HUD, open Dash.
5 - Dash is not maximized anymore.

[Bug 916114] Re: middle click should close app and not open new window

2012-01-19 Thread Conscious User
On the subject of consistency with tabs: the analogy between tabs and
launcher items is not straightforward.

For starters, a single launcher item can be associated with multiple
windows, whereas a single tab is always associated with a single
document.

Should middle click close all windows? This sounds... catastrophically
easy to do by accident.

You have a strange definition of "everything"...

- The Windows 7 taskbar opens new instances on middle-click
- Docky opens new instances on middle-click
- AWN opens new instances on middle-click
- The GNOME-Shell Dash opens new instances on middle-click
- If I remember correctly, the OSX dock opens new instances on middle-click
- A middle-click in the KDE taksbar does *not* close the corresponding window
- Middle-click in URLs is associated with opening new instances

[Bug 907015] Re: could we have another shutdown menu?

2012-01-10 Thread Conscious User
@Matthew:

For whatever reason, Redmar is using the word "menu" for both dialogs
and actual menus.

My attachments should clarify what he's talking about.

@Redmar:

There is a difference between "X is important" and "X should be
prioritized above everything". Your proposals either put the menu size
above everything or put discoverability above everything. Neither of
those is necessarily the best approach.

The rationale behind the current design is that "restart" can be
interpreted as a particular case of "shutdown", while "suspend"and
"hibernate" can not. It's an attempt to find a balance.

I'm not saying that the current design is necessarily ideal. But you
should present other arguments because the ones you presented so far are
based on the false premise that "importance = priority above
everything".

Furthermore, I disagree with your opinion on what "looks nicer". In my
opinion, the power button dialog looks cluttered and confusing with so
many buttons.

Finally, the issue about the dialog being too wide is actually a GTK3
issue. Dialogs in GTK3 tolerate a larger length than GTK2 before
automatically adding linebreaks. I'm not sure why this is so, but either
way it's a toolkit issue and not one that should be worked around only
for this specific dialog.

[Bug 882852] Re: Toolbar buttons should have active and highlight visuals that include the arrows

2011-11-18 Thread Conscious User
The problem I'm trying to solve is the arrow not being sufficiently
connected, visually, to the button they belong to. Currently they look
like separators (due to the last item, History, not having one) or
completely independent entities.

Another alternative to solve this other than a hover color would be two
styles of separator: one like the one currently used, with gradients,
between the left part and the arrow, and another one more solid between
the three different buttons.

I agree that what Thunderbird does is lacking in terms of making
sufficiently clear that there are two different functionalities on the
same button, but is better than USC in terms of making clear that the
arrow and the label belong to the same domain.

[Bug 886056] [NEW] Cannot respond to friendship requests from Empathy

2011-11-04 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

When I'm using GTalk in Empathy and someone requests to see my status, I
get a notification bubble but can't do nothing about it. If I happen to
already have the person in my contact list, I can open the list and
click on the name to authorize. But most of the time people will *not*
already have the person in there.

I remember that in previous version of Ubuntu, a request would create an
entry in the Messaging Menu, which would then show a dialog box when you
clicked on it. Not sure if it was the best solution, but at least it was
something. I don't know if this was disabled or broke.

'Now this is only when "users are divided", so if no one comes to defend

That's PRECISELY my point. I'm simply telling you to stop proposing
solutions that only apply to a situation that's not confirmed yet and
might not be confirmed at all.

Establish what the situation is, and THEN propose solutions. That's all
I'm asking.

[Bug 772792] Re: Is slow to work with Unity when it has too many icons(bring back upper accordion of launcher)

2011-10-31 Thread Conscious User
@manny,

In everything you wrote, you didn't mention one single advantage of the
current behavior.

Please re-read this report. This is what it has so far:

- one developer not rejecting the report and forwarding it to designers
- Mark not remembering of the current behavior being requested
- me mentioning that one developer disagreed with the current behavior
- ZERO arguments in favor of the current behavior

Maybe one developer or designer will eventually step in this report and
give some good arguments in favor of the current behavior. If and when
this happens, your point might be valid. But proposing a customization
option BEFORE this happens, considering only the situation I summarized
above, is wrong in all possible levels and introduces more problems and
it solves.

Software development is not as easy as you seem to think. Adding
customization options tends to MULTIPLY code complexity and possible
points of failure, and also increases interface complexity for non-
geeks. It is a decision that should be taken carefully, and only when
there is a sufficiently balanced set of arguments for both sides of the
proposed customization.

So you want to propose adding an option for the current behavior? Fine.
But FIRST, give at least one argument in favor of it. Otherwise you
might be as well requesting an option for turning the launcher upside-
down.

2011-10-30 Thread Conscious User
@manny, why an option?

So far, judging from the complete lack of arguments in favor of the
current implementation in this report, I'd say that the best course of
actions is bringing back the old behavior and that's it.

I honestly see no advantage in the current implementation, regardless if
the user is casual or experienced.

[Bug 882852] [NEW] Toolbar buttons should have active and highlight visuals that include the arrows

2011-10-27 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

The arrows for the "All software" and "Installed" buttons do not
visually feel like part of the buttons, specially when one of the
buttons is active.

The current active color should be applied to the arrow too, and there
should be a hover color that does the same.

Also, it would be better if the separator between the main part of the
button and the arrow appeared only on hover.

I'm attaching a video that shows how Thunderbird does it.

[Bug 687732] Re: gtk.Label link-activate signal broken with compiz in natty

2011-09-20 Thread Conscious User
Ok, thanks to cldx3000 I found a reliable way to reproduce this *with
the program provided in this report*. (see Bug #790565)

1) open the link.py program
2) open another application, like nautilus
3) close this other application, so that the focus returns to link.py
automatically
4) the link in link.py should not work

In short: the bug only happens when the window receives focus
automatically (like when the one on top of it has been closed), and
never when you focus it manually.

[Bug 811757] [NEW] Panel should show buttons/title/menubar of the top maximized window, not the focused one

2011-07-16 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

I use emesene and maximize the chat window. When I receive a new message
and click on its entry on the Messaging Menu, its window pops up as
expected, but with one catch: sometimes it opens unfocused.

That means that, if there is another maximized window below it, like
Firefox, and this maximized window is the one in focus, the window
controls, titlebar and menubar shown in the panel are actually of this
other window. I lost count of how many times I accidentally closed
Firefox when I actually intended to close the emesene chat window.

This only happens in Unity because in a normal desktop, without the
titlebar/panel merging, the window controls will obey the stacking
order, regardless of which window is focused.

This should also happen in Unity: the controls shown in the panel should
be based on focus when non-maximized windows are involved, but should be
based on stacking order if only maximized windows are involved.

@Alex and @Seb:

I'm having the same problem and the instructions do not apply because
Compiz does not crash.

Save from the panel disappearing, it keeps running normally. In fact,
it's not even that the panel disappears, it's just rendered incorrectly:
sometimes I get a black bar, sometimes a bar with fake transparency and
sometimes artifacts. But in all cases I can click blindly on it and
confirm that the indicators and notification area are still there.

[Bug 802317] [NEW] Launcher blocks bottom left hotcorner

2011-06-26 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

This is something that didn't happen in Maverick: I use the bottom left
hotcorner to activate the Compiz Scale plugin, but sometimes it does not
work. This seems to be caused by the Unity launcher.

It seems that this is somewhat related to the order that the plugins are
loaded, because I can fix the issue (at least for the current session)
if I enable and disable the hotcorner, and I can bring the issue back if
I disable and enable the Unity plugin.

[Bug 802315] [NEW] "Not in sudoers file" error message is misleading

2011-06-26 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

I recently bumped into a bug that removed me from the admin group, and
noticed that due to sudo giving me the error "user not in sudoers file".
That made me realize that the error message is slightly misleading, in
which it induces the user to adding his name to /etc/sudoers instead of
the more correct (at least in Ubuntu) procedure of adding his name to
the admin group and leaving /etc/sudoers untouched.

The message should be changed to something that advises that the user
should be in the admin group, and the admin group on its turn should be
in /etc/sudoers.

[Bug 687732] Re: gtk.Label link-activate signal broken with compiz in natty

2011-06-03 Thread Conscious User
What I could observe so far:

1) If links are working, they will keep working at least until you
unfocus the window.

2) If links are not working, they will keep not working until you
unfocus the window and focus it again. This unfocus and focus solution
*never* failed so far.

I'm occasionally experiencing the problem when the window is already
focused, but so far couldn't find a reliable way to reproduce it. But
only seems to happen with GtkLabel links.

I'm developing an application that uses linked labels a lot, and it
seems that this bug is not completely solved, it's only happening less
often. After testing with and without Compiz, I'm more or less convinced
that links always work when Compiz is off and occasionally do not work
when Compiz is on.

2011-05-15 Thread Conscious User
For whatever reason I never received a notification for Matthew's
response, sorry...

I'm now attaching a screencast that hopefully makes the issue clearer.
As you can see, there are two different highlights: one when the cursor
is on the control's height (Play button becomes orange), and one when
the cursor is over one of the three buttons (the specific button becomes
more bright). The first type is where the problem is.

[Bug 775969] [NEW] Global menu does not respect window sensitivity

2011-05-02 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-appmenu

When a window is made insensitive or non-interactive, the insensitivity
is supposed to include the menubar. With the global menu, that does not
happen. For example: open Nautilus and try to empty the trash. You will
be free to use the menubar during the confirmation dialog, and you are
not supposed to be able to.

[Bug 754583] Re: UIFe: Launcher - update launcher reveal interaction to make it more accessible to first time users

2011-04-11 Thread Conscious User
@Mark

Okay, allow me to rephrase: your assumption is valid for *muscle memory*
but not for *efficiency*. Trash does benefit from infinite size, but
that does not change the fact that the corner approach requires two
movements instead of just one.

Not to mention that hovering through all the icons to reach the one you
want will activate all the tooltips in the way, which is quite
distracting.

[Bug 754583] Re: UIFe: Launcher - update launcher reveal interaction to make it more accessible to first time users

2011-04-11 Thread Conscious User
@Mark:

"We know that long term muscle memory for corner activation is just as
good as the edge approach."

You seem to be forgetting that accessing an icon launcher is a two-phase
approach:

1 - revealing the launcher

2 - going to the icon

Your assumption above is valid for (1) but not for (2), because (2) does
not benefit from Fitt's law and thus distance matters. Imagine a user
with a large monitor wanting to access the Trash.

[Bug 754583] Re: UIFe: Launcher - update launcher reveal interaction to make it more accessible to first time users

2011-04-08 Thread Conscious User
In my opinion, using only this pressure policy will introduce a constant
unwanted delay. I suggest adding to that a momentum-based approach that
recognizes whether the mouse was placed or thrown by analysing its speed
and acceleration.

I'm aware that this does not cover the case where the mouse is already
close to the side, as the momentum will be low regardless of what the
user does. That's why I'm suggesting using this in *addition* to the
pressure policy instead of replacing it.

[Bug 733269] [NEW] Dash should show Nautilus emblems

2011-03-11 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Currently Dash is not overlaying Nautilus emblems over the icons of
files that have them. The emblems are particularly important for folders
synced with Ubuntu One, so I think they should be supported.

[Bug 733273] [NEW] "About Me" item disappeared

2011-03-11 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-me

For whatever reason the "About Me" item that is present after a fresh
install disappears after some time of usage. This was already happening
in Maverick. The separator is still present, so it doesn't seem to be on
purpose.

More info: the menubar disappears also when you open the Unity Dash.

As a side note, fixing Bug 732016 would make tracking this bug easier.

[Bug 460483] Re: The plugin should allow Evolution to close to the indicator-applet

2011-03-09 Thread Conscious User
@Geoff,

Even with Unity, Ubuntu will still have the Messaging Menu and I don't
want Evolution cluttering the launcher all the time, just like I don't
want it cluttering my Docky right now in Maverick. So I can assure you
that I'll still use your patch in Natty, regardless of it being
officially accepted or not.

As a side note, how difficult it was making your patch play nicely with
the clock applet? I'm asking because Natty is dropping the applet and
replacing with the Datetime Indicator, which also has support for
Evolution appointments.

[Bug 732016] [NEW] Desktop should be titled

2011-03-09 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

The "Desktop" placeholder menubar that appears on Unity when no window
is focused has no title. This looks inconsistent, makes harder for the
user to know that a placeholder menubar exists in the first place and
leaves an awkward left gap when the menu is being shown. This could be
solved by simply placing a "Desktop" title there, or maybe "File
Manager" to be consistent with Nautilus.

[Bug 732004] Re: No "Desktop" menubar until the first window is opened

2011-03-09 Thread Conscious User
Correction: you don't have to actually open a new window and unfocus it.
Clicking on the desktop is enough for the menu to start appearing.
Apparently when you log in nothing, including the desktop, has focus.

The main point remains, though: this first click should not be
necessary. The desktop should receive focus automatically after the
login.

Twitter is a completely different context. Mentioning the source of your

I personally believe this signature can backfire badly. I don't think
it's possible to come up with a wording that does not sound obnoxious.

[Bug 615300] Re: Evolution should have a default signature enabled

I would like to see more details on the rationale behind this.

Are there any studies showing that users like and keep this kind of
thing even after being aware that they can turn it off?

Or this is simply advertisement trying to slip into something that "most
users don't care enough to change"?

If it's the latter, I think Ubuntu should be above this kind of sneaky
strategy.
