I would blame a lack of familiarity with the system. Would suggest a

[Bug 236046] Re: checkgmail tray background colour cannot be changed

2011-09-19 Thread Corona
Since a couple of days checkgmail keeps asking for my password. I found
a fix on the internet so I'm attaching an updated version of the script,
as well as a patch.

If you don't know how to apply the patch, just download the "checkgmail"
file to your home folder. Then open a terminal and enter this command.

sudo mv ~/checkgmail /usr/bin/checkgmail

This moves the updated script to the applications folder.

[Bug 744371] [NEW] PHP5-FPM doesn't always restart on 10.10

2011-03-28 Thread Steve Corona
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5-fpm

The init script for PHP5-FPM doesn't handle restarts correctly. When you
restart an active PHP5-FPM process, it'll sometimes shutdown the old
process, but the new process won't spawn any children and handle
requests.

I think whats happening is that the new PHP5-FPM process is trying to
grab the FastCGI Port while the old process is still shutting down,
causing the new PHP5-FPM process to fail.

Either way, this can be fixed by changing restart to use graceful-stop
instead of stop

Currently it does-
   restart)
$0 stop
$0 start
;;

This needs to become
restart)
$0 graceful-stop
$0 start

[Bug 600453] Re: [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU)

2011-01-24 Thread Corona
The basic problem reported here has indeed been fixed, drm-intel-next
now succesfully boots to X. Resuming from suspend is broken for me, too,
I haven't tried the shutdown menu options yet though.

I filed these bug reports, reporting the resuming from suspend problems and the
flicker I experience during boot.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33439
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33442

The flicker seems to be mostly solved by 2 patches which (accidentally)
did not find their way to drm-intel-next. Resuming from suspend seems to
be a different issue which is not solved yet.

ehm it might take a bit longer than 1 day before fixes get merged into the main
branches of drm-intel or drm-intel-next.
if you want to try out the fixes you have to checkout the edp-fixes2 branch
from jesse's tree, or ickle's drm-intel-next staging branch (I believe), just
follow the instructions here https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278

[Bug 600453] Re: [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU)

2011-01-08 Thread Corona
Yup, all the testers have reported that the issue is fixed in edp-fixes-2.
Fixes will land in 2.6.37.x so stay tuned.
Apparently the black screen on boot and the suspend issues are totally fixed.
External monitors also work, but with a couple of glitches, but new bugs have
to be opened for those.

I havent' tried the new fixes myself yet, I'm at a conference right now
with my netbook. As soon as I get home next week I'll check them on my
E6510 and report back here.

2010-11-17 Thread Corona
As I mentioned before, all progress for this bug depends entirely on
work done upstream, so as long there is no definitive fix there nothing
can happen for Ubuntu. You can ask your question here
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278 .

Dejan, you can find a couple of patches in that bug report if you are
familiar with kernel compilation. If not, you can follow these
guidelines https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild , they
worked for me.

[Bug 236046] Re: checkgmail tray background colour cannot be changed

2010-11-16 Thread Corona
Sorry, I have no experience whatsoever with sending patches upstream, I was
just following directions. I don't want to pester anyone, and I don't have time
to replicate this bug on various distros.
Looking at the code I'm quite sure that setting a custom bg color will be
disabled on any system running Gnome, which is especially annoying if you use a
custom background color for your panel.

As I mentioned above I notified the developer of checkgmail, he is aware
of the issue but he won't change the current behaviour because that
would break transparency with the default Ubuntu settings (Ambiance
theme without a custom background or transparency for the panel). He
told me that he might include the fix as a commandline option.

So, I don't think I'm in the position to push this patch. If anybody
else wants to submit it somewhere, please feel free to do so.

[Bug 236046] Re: checkgmail tray background colour cannot be changed

2010-11-12 Thread Corona
One of the recent gmail updates broke the 404 full text functionality. This is
fixed in the latest svn version, which you can install by running sudo
checkgmail -update . This update will fix the issue but reintroduce the
background color problem, so here's a patch against the new svn version.
I'm also attaching the complete patched file for people who are not familiar
with diff files (save the file to your home folder, copy it to /usr/bin (sudo
cp checkgmail /usr/bin) and make it executable (sudo chmod +x
/usr/bin/checkgmail) .

What do you mean, "just that"? Did you download mättu's module or did
you compile it yourself? The psmouse.ko module posted by mättu is
compiled for kernel 2.6.35-22-generic-pae 32bit and might not work with
other kernels. I hope you have a backup of /lib/modules/`uname
-r`/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/psmouse.ko so you can place the original

[Bug 600453] Re: [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU)

2010-10-07 Thread Corona
I just saw that this bug was not even nominated for Maverick, this
should have happened a long time ago. I just nominated it, but the
feature freeze was a while ago so I don't think this will make any
difference anymore. So Francisco, remember to nominate your bugs for
upcoming releases.

[Bug 600453] Re: [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU)

2010-10-07 Thread Corona
Francisco, I don't think anything will happen until significant progress
is made upstream. Henk's patch works very well for me, but it is not
considered as a proper solution so I don't think we will see it in
Maverick. You can follow the upstream bug report here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278 .

The most recent working kernel is this one I think:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc5-maverick/ VGA
output works and there is no blank screen on boot, but you need a
workaround to get suspend working. I don't remember the actual bug
report with this workaround, but I think it's not very difficult to
find.

Still, I think it's a shame that there is so little attention for this
bug, especially when compared with the e6410. What puzzles me most of
all is that the E6510 is apparently Ubuntu certified:
http://webapps.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201009-6534/ .
Canonical says that only the Lucid OEM version has been tested, I wonder
where we can find it...

2010-09-27 Thread Corona
For me, 300 ms and 500 ms didn't work, so I increased the delays to a very long
time like 900 ms to see if it would help at all. It works now and I'm happy
with it, but maybe 600ms would have been enough.
I'm also interested in finding out if other people have the same results with
this patch.

Sorry for the multiple comments, but I forgot to mention that the .deb
packages I uploaded do not install an initrd by default. You should run
sudo update-initramfs -c -k 2.6.36-rc5 after installing them, and then
edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg accordingly (look for the menuentry 'Ubuntu,
with Linux 2.6.36-rc5' and add the line initrd
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.36-rc5 before the } ). Hope this helps.

[Bug 600453] Re: [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU)

2010-09-26 Thread Corona
I tested henk's patch mentioned in this thread (comment 63)
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278#c63 , applied on top of
linux-2.6.36-rc5.
It only works for me if I increase the delays to 900ms (500 and 300 don't work,
I haven't tried any values between 900 and 500), but it really seems to fix the
black screen. I can see the bootloader and the login screen now, and I can
resume from suspend. The cardreader is supported by default. I haven't tested
VGA output yet but I guess that works, too.

I tried to upload my deb packages to a PPA but I couldn't figure out how
to do it, so I'm going to try to add them as an attachment.

[Bug 561802] Re: [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410

2010-09-23 Thread Corona
I'm not an expert at all, I've just done a bit of reading on various
websites about these issues...

A couple of knowledgeable people have told me that the E6410 and the
E6510 have slightly different hardware, and that seems to be true
because patches which work for the E6410 don't work on my E6510 at all.

I'm a 32bit user, and I have little experience with 64bit so I really
don't know if this makes a difference for this issue.

I also don't know about other notebooks with i5/i7 processors. I though
DELL was the only manufacturer offering these as a default option but I
might be wrong.

Mike, I'm glad you got Ubuntu up and running, and that you did not let
these issues put you off. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Francisco, I saw that there is a new patch from henk here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278 . I'm going to give
it a try and I'll let you know if it worked in the E6510 bug.

[Bug 561802] Re: [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410

2010-09-22 Thread Corona
In my experience, this type of bug is extremely uncommon with Ubuntu
(I've been using it for more than 2 years now). The problem is that the
Intel chips that are in the E6510 are very new, and the Linux kernel
developers need to find out how they work by trial and error, because
the full specs and the drivers are not released. Sometimes Dell or Intel
would help a little bit, but they don't seem to care enough. So don't
let this put you off, it's the hardware manufacturers, and certainly not
a buggy OS, that are causing these issues.

I have a E6510 with intel gpu, and for me a plain Lucid install (iso
downloaded in June or July) worked fine, except for suspend/resume, VGA
output and advanced settings for the touchpad (it works fine, but you
don't get multitouch).

All these issues are being solved right now. You can have a look at this
bug, too: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/600453 .

Installing a new kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/current/ shouldn't be too difficult, you
basically download 3 .deb packages, double-click on them and they should
install automatically. When you reboot your computer, the new kernels
should be selected automatically, but if they're not you should hold
down shift right after the BIOS screen and then select them with the
arrow keys. You can always find more detailed instructions by googling
"install kernel package deb" or something like that, I think there is
lots of information on the Ubuntu wiki pages.

Thanks, Francisco. I added the tags [arrandale] and [i915], I hope the
bug will attract more attention this way. If anybody is following this
bug report, please comment on your experience.

I believe it's exactly the same bug as the one in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278 .

For the moment I'm running a modified 2.6.35 kernel. I tweaked it to
support the e6510's card reader, and I also fixed the blank screen issue
by reverting the patch mentioned here
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278#c5 . Apparently, this
is not really a proper fix, but it works and it supports external
monitors. For suspend and resume, I use the workaround mentioned here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/578673?comments=all
. I'm aware that not all this information is relevant to the issue
reported here, but I just wanted to give an overview of issues and
possible workarounds.

Confirmed on a Dell E6510, i5 with intel integrated graphics.

Francisco, I think you should change the bug title to something along
the lines of "E6510: blank screen on boot" because that's what the

Maybe you could also change the description to be a bit more specific

[Bug 607783] Re: [arrandale] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510

2010-08-05 Thread Corona
I finally got it working :-)
The latest drm-intel-next kernel does solve the issue, but some patch caused
the regression which gave me the blank screen on boot. I reverted that patch
(see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16496) and compiled the kernel
myself. Now I can use my external monitor. The screen gets scrambled for a
split second when I open the monitors dialogue, but then I get a fully
functional dual-head setup. The only problem is that the option "same image in
all monitors" is greyed out, but that issue is probably independent from this
one.

I don't know which patch solved the issue, but I'm very happy with it.

[Bug 578673] Re: [arrandale] Resume doesn't work on a Latitude E6410

2010-08-04 Thread Corona
Thanks, henk, that makes it even more difficult to test newer kernels.

Are there other people for who Manoj's kernel (#81) does not fix the
suspend/resume issue? I have an e6510 with an intel core i5, intel
integrated graphics. I'm running lucid 32bit and so far only henk's
workaround has worked, so the proposed fix does not solve the problem
for me. If it turns out that it works for e6410 but not e6510 I'll open
a separate bug.

[Bug 607783] Re: [arrandale] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510

2010-08-04 Thread Corona
According to Carlos Parra Camargo, the drm-intel-next kernel 2.6.35-997
from the mainline PPA solves this issue. This kernel, however, works
only under maverick. Under lucid, it gives a blank screen on boot so I
have not been able to test this yet. I might upgrade to Maverick this
weekend and I'll report back on this.

(sorry for the double post)

[Bug 561802] Re: [lucid] [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410

2010-08-04 Thread Corona
Manoj, the kernel in http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~manjo/lucid/lp561802/
gives me a blank screen on boot, but I can hear the gdm drums and I can
login using the keyboard.

The kernel in http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~manjo/lucid/lp578673/ does work,
but it does not fix the suspend/resume bug reported here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/578673. I know
it's weird, for most people who commented on that bug this kernel did
fix the problem.

JFYI, the latest drm-intel-next kernels (2.6.35-997 and 999) also give
me a blank screen on boot under lucid, but Carlos Parra Camargo confirms
that they do work under maverick. Seems like a very weird issue.

This is on a latitude E6510 with an intel core i5 chip with intel
integrated graphics running lucid.

Thanks for your help.

Looks like I'll have to install Maverick then. Manoj's kernel with
backported patches (the one in lp578673) does not work for me, I've
compiled drm-intel-next from source but no luck. I still hope for a
solution for lucid though.

[Bug 607783] Re: [arrandale] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510

2010-07-25 Thread Corona
I tried everything again to make sure, here's the new log.
When the laptop was fully booted the last line that was printed was "wlan0: no
ipv6 routers present" (see the end of the file). When I plugged in the cable,
nothing happened. After running `xrandr -q`, the dell-wmi message appeared and
the screen went black. I waited a couple of minutes but no additional messages
appeared. When I pressed alt-sysrq and released those keys, I got the messages
about the soft lockup and the linked modules. After that I hit sysrq-reisub, as
you can see in the file.

When I blacklist the dell-wmi module, everything stays the same except
that the message about the wmi event is not printed.

[ 181.081635] Loglevel set to 5
[ 182.536278] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#2 stuck for 61s! [Xorg:1230]

[Bug 607783] Re: [arrandale] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510

2010-07-22 Thread Corona
I tried both suggestions:

1) Plugging in the cable after switching to VT1: the system freezes and the
screen goes black, even without switching back to X
2) Plugging in the cable, running `sleep 30; xrandr -q` and then switching to
VT1: screen goes black almost immediately, before the 30 seconds are over.

I guess that's not very helpful, either. I'll try the Netconsole thing
this weekend when I have access to my second machine.

2010-07-22 Thread Corona
Thanks for looking into this, guys. This is what I found:

- When I plug in the VGA cable and switch to VT1, the screen goes black,
even when I don't run `xrandr -q` first, so that doesn't give any
additional info.

- Running `xrandr -q --verbose > ~/xrandr.txt` (with cable plugged in)
without switching to VT1: system freezes, bottom part of the screen goes
black, on the upper part of the screen I see my scrambled wallpaper and
the (frozen) mouse pointer. No image on the external monitor. When I
reboot using sysrq-reisub xrandr.txt is empty

- Running udevadm monitor --property > ~/udevadm.log before opening the
monitors dialogue: system freezes, screen goes black, file is empty when
I reboot.

Let me know if there's anything else I can try.

[Bug 607783] [NEW] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510 (arrandale, Intel Core i5)

2010-07-20 Thread Corona
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I cannot hook up an external monitor or beamer to my Dell Latitude E6510 using
the VGA port. When I open the "monitors" dialogue, the screen goes black if
there is a VGA cable plugged in. Only alt-sysrq-REISUB works to restart the
computer.
The chip is an intel one (intel core i5), not nvidia.
I tried the xorg-edgers PPA to see if newer packages fix the problem, but that
is not the case.

that the bug is still unassigned, is somebody looking at it?

I ran the command before plugging in the vga cable, but after reboot the file
is empty (also on the Latitude e6510)
Is there a workaround to use a beamer without the laptop locking up?

[Bug 582883] [NEW] "Swap ESC and CapsLock" does not work for shortcuts

2010-05-19 Thread Corona
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I swapped ESC and CapsLock using gnome-keyboard-properties (layout,
options, capslock key behavior), but CapsLock still behaves as CapsLock
instead of ESC for keyboard shortcuts.

Steps to reproduce:

- Set "Swaps ESC and CapsLock" (keyboard, layout, options)
- Open "keyboard shortcuts", click a command and press alt+CAPS
- Try to execute the command by pressing alt+CAPS > nothing happens. It does
work when you press alt+ESC, but in that case CapsLock is also activated.

[Bug 249023] Re: No default handler for .tex files

2008-10-20 Thread Corona
I have the same problem but for me adding "text/x-tex=gedit.desktop" to
/etc/gnome/defaults.list did not work at all. xdg-open still returns
the error message "There is no default action associated with this
location", so gnome-do fails, too.
