[Bug 236046] Re: checkgmail tray background colour cannot be changed
Sorry, I have no experience whatsoever with sending patches upstream, I was just following directions. I don't want to pester anyone, and I don't have time to replicate this bug on various distros. Looking at the code I'm quite sure that setting a custom bg color will be disabled on any system running Gnome, which is especially annoying if you use a custom background color for your panel. As I mentioned above I notified the developer of checkgmail, he is aware of the issue but he won't change the current behaviour because that would break transparency with the default Ubuntu settings (Ambiance theme without a custom background or transparency for the panel). He told me that he might include the fix as a commandline option. So, I don't think I'm in the position to push this patch. Francisco, I don't think anything will happen until significant progress is made upstream. Henk's patch works very well for me, but it is not considered as a proper solution so I don't think we will see it in Maverick. You can follow the upstream bug report here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278 . The most recent working kernel is this one I think: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc5-maverick/ VGA output works and there is no blank screen on boot, but you need a workaround to get suspend working. I don't remember the actual bug report with this workaround, but I think it's not very difficult to find. Still, I think it's a shame that there is so little attention for this bug, especially when compared with the e6410. What puzzles me most of all is that the E6510 is apparently Ubuntu certified: http://webapps.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201009-6534/ . I know uploading the kernel debs is not the proper way to do this, if anyone could upload the packages to their PPA that would be much better, but I don't know how to do it. ** Patch added: "intel_dp_2.6.36-rc5.patch" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/600453/+attachment/1641867/+files/intel_dp_2.6.36-rc5.patch -- [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600453 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 600453] Re: [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU)
I tested henk's patch mentioned in this thread (comment 63) https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278#c63 , applied on top of linux-2.6.36-rc5. It only works for me if I increase the delays to 900ms (500 and 300 don't work, I haven't tried any values between 900 and 500), but it really seems to fix the black screen. I can see the bootloader and the login screen now, and I can resume from suspend. The cardreader is supported by default. I haven't tested VGA output yet but I guess that works, too. I tried to upload my deb packages to a PPA but I couldn't figure out how to do it, so I'm going to try to add them as an attachment. ** Attachment added: "linux-image-2.6.36-rc5_2.6.36-rc5-10.00.Custom_i386.deb" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/600453/+attachment/1641859/+files/linux-image-2.6.36-rc5_2.6.36-rc5-10.00.Custom_i386.deb -- [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600453 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 561802] Re: [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410
I'm not an expert at all, I've just done a bit of reading on various websites about these issues... A couple of knowledgeable people have told me that the E6410 and the E6510 have slightly different hardware, and that seems to be true because patches which work for the E6410 don't work on my E6510 at all. I'm a 32bit user, and I have little experience with 64bit so I really don't know if this makes a difference for this issue. I also don't know about other notebooks with i5/i7 processors. I though DELL was the only manufacturer offering these as a default option but I might be wrong. Mike, I'm glad you got Ubuntu up and running, and that you did not let these issues put you off. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Francisco, I saw that there is a new patch from henk here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278 . I'm going to give it a try and I'll let you know if it worked in the E6510 bug. -- [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/561802 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I tested the kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline /drm-intel-next/current/ on my E6510, core i5, intel gpu. I could hear the gdm drums, but the screen remained black (with the backlight on). [Bug 561802] Re: [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410
In my experience, this type of bug is extremely uncommon with Ubuntu (I've been using it for more than 2 years now). The problem is that the Intel chips that are in the E6510 are very new, and the Linux kernel developers need to find out how they work by trial and error, because the full specs and the drivers are not released. Sometimes Dell or Intel would help a little bit, but they don't seem to care enough. So don't let this put you off, it's the hardware manufacturers, and certainly not a buggy OS, that are causing these issues. I have a E6510 with intel gpu, and for me a plain Lucid install (iso downloaded in June or July) worked fine, except for suspend/resume, VGA output and advanced settings for the touchpad (it works fine, but you don't get multitouch). All these issues are being solved right now. You can have a look at this bug, too: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/600453 . Installing a new kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/current/ shouldn't be too difficult, you basically download 3 .deb packages, double-click on them and they should install automatically. When you reboot your computer, the new kernels should be selected automatically, but if they're not you should hold down shift right after the BIOS screen and then select them with the arrow keys. You can always find more detailed instructions by googling "install kernel package deb" or something like that, I think there is lots of information on the Ubuntu wiki pages. -- [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/561802 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks, Francisco. I added the tags [arrandale] and [i915], I hope the bug will attract more attention this way. If anybody is following this bug report, please comment on your experience. I believe it's exactly the same bug as the one in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278 . For the moment I'm running a modified 2.6.35 kernel. I tweaked it to support the e6510's card reader, and I also fixed the blank screen issue by reverting the patch mentioned here https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29278#c5 . Apparently, this is not really a proper fix, but it works and it supports external monitors. For suspend and resume, I use the workaround mentioned here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/578673?comments=all . I'm aware that not all this information is relevant to the issue reported here, but I just wanted to give an overview of issues and possible workarounds. -- [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600453 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 607783] Re: [arrandale] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510
I finally got it working :-) The latest drm-intel-next kernel does solve the issue, but some patch caused the regression which gave me the blank screen on boot. I reverted that patch (see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16496) and compiled the kernel myself. Now I can use my external monitor. The screen gets scrambled for a split second when I open the monitors dialogue, but then I get a fully functional dual-head setup. The only problem is that the option "same image in all monitors" is greyed out, but that issue is probably independent from this one. OK, I'll try this next weekend when I have more time. The guy who reported this bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29005#c4 says that the suggested patches (one of them is the same one you're referring to) don't work for him, though. He has a Latitude E6410 with the same chip as my E6510. I don't know if this helps, but in this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1487531 at ubuntuforums.org, somebody mentions that the patches mentioned at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=607864 work for solving this specific problem in Fedora. [Bug 607783] Re: [arrandale] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510
I tried everything again to make sure, here's the new log. When the laptop was fully booted the last line that was printed was "wlan0: no ipv6 routers present" (see the end of the file). When I plugged in the cable, nothing happened. After running `xrandr -q`, the dell-wmi message appeared and the screen went black. I waited a couple of minutes but no additional messages appeared. When I pressed alt-sysrq and released those keys, I got the messages about the soft lockup and the linked modules. After that I hit sysrq-reisub, as you can see in the file. When I blacklist the dell-wmi module, everything stays the same except that the message about the wmi event is not printed. ** Attachment added: "netconsole4.log" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/52494477/netconsole4.log -- [arrandale] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/607783 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I tried both suggestions: 1) Plugging in the cable after switching to VT1: the system freezes and the screen goes black, even without switching back to X 2) Plugging in the cable, running `sleep 30; xrandr -q` and then switching to VT1: screen goes black almost immediately, before the 30 seconds are over. [Bug 607783] Re: [arrandale] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510
Thanks for looking into this, guys. This is what I found: - When I plug in the VGA cable and switch to VT1, the screen goes black, even when I don't run `xrandr -q` first, so that doesn't give any additional info. - Running `xrandr -q --verbose > ~/xrandr.txt` (with cable plugged in) without switching to VT1: system freezes, bottom part of the screen goes black, on the upper part of the screen I see my scrambled wallpaper and the (frozen) mouse pointer. No image on the external monitor. When I reboot using sysrq-reisub xrandr.txt is empty - Running udevadm monitor --property > ~/udevadm.log before opening the monitors dialogue: system freezes, screen goes black, file is empty when I reboot.
