This issue now started happening (apparently) randomly. If I use the touchpad just after the mouse cursor appears then I can prevent the issue; I successfully used this technique twice in a row on two cold restarts (complete shutdown and then restart). I am getting the keyboard and trackpad no response issue after disconnecting the Ethernet cable. This has happened twice, and both times I had to reboot.
