[Bug 564049] Re: Nepomuk Strigi does not autostart with less than or equal to 1GB of RAM

My bug report (the one this forked from) is:

[Bug 563021] [NEW] Nepomuk Strigi does not autostart

2010-04-14 Thread Cyberkilla
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-runtime

Recently (within the past few weeks) Strigi has stopped autostarting at
login. In the Desktop Search dialog, the option Enable Strigi Desktop
File Indexer is unchecked. If I check it again and click apply, Strigi
starts and the icon appears in the stray. On subsequent logins, however,
it is unchecked again, with the message, Strigi service not running.

I can also launch it from the console with: nepomukservicestub
nepomukstrigiservice and the icon will appear in the tray, showing its
indexing progress.

I cannot find any blatant crash reports on my system about it, or
anything obvious in .xsession-errors.

As you can see, the config file intends for Strigi to autostart.

[Bug 535108] Re: Plymouth starts late

2010-03-10 Thread Cyberkilla
I have the same problem (though the blank screen period is a bit shorter
on my computer).

I get an fsck message for two partitions and a couple of lines about a
dodgy webcam driver. Then Plymouth loads. I don't get console messages
overlaid onto the splash screen, but they're there before it appears.

In addition, I get strange TERM and disconnected from system bus
messages on shutdown (plymouth closes a few seconds before the computer
switches off).

Its good to know that you're aware of the issue already. One final thing
- I don't seem to even have a boot.log. I upgraded from Intrepid -
Jaunty - Karmic - Lucid, and I'm missing a ton of log files. This
isn't exactly the same bug, but I thought I'd mention it in case it is
related to them not being piped to a log file.

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/has a black background (multiple apps)

2010-03-06 Thread Cyberkilla
I keep being told that it's because these icons aren't using the new
GTKStatusIcon, but that seems like a cop out to me.

A few releases ago (possibly Intrepid) this problem appeared in every
tray icon. It seems to be true that some applications have fixed the
issue by using GTKStatusIcon, but I don't think that's the root cause at
all.

Something regressed in whatever the icons were using before, which
triggered this problem, months ago.

That's what it seems like to me. I'm open to be proven wrong, but I have
a pretty clear memory of all of being able to change my panel colour,
transparency and even add an image without the icon backgrounds being
broken.

[Bug 11222] Re: Add auto-organize support to Rhythmbox

2009-11-16 Thread Cyberkilla
It is a bit pointless to use a fancy GUI music manager when you still
have to maintain the integrity of your library folder yourself.

If the tracks are sorted into folders by artist and album, those folders
should update to reflect any changes in the metadata of the tracks
themselves. If this is not the case, you end up with a directory
structure that is inaccurate and misleading.

Perhaps it is a product of people coming from Windows, expecting to be
able to organise their music in the same way. I don't buy that though.

Supposedly, Amerok organises your library. Banshee certainly does.
In addition, so to iTunes and WMP11.

Rhythmbox is missing a rather common feature.

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/has a black background (multiple apps)

2009-11-09 Thread Cyberkilla
@Chow Loong Jin: The colour behind the icons is the same as the colour
of the panel, if you remove any background image or transparency.

With regards to Opera, perhaps they don't _need_ to get involved. This
change happened outside of the applications affected. The mechanism they
all use to produce a tray icon has changed its behaviour, it seems.

Of course, I can't back that up with any proof. It's just my educated
guess. I just find it hard to believe that so many applications suddenly
had a regression without it being a shared, external factor.

The issue presents itself irrespective of the GTK theme used, or whether
compositing is enabled.

The workaround of updating each individual application to use
GTKStatusIcon (?) instead may work, but it's not really fixing the
cause of the problem, I suspect.

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/has a black background (multiple apps)

2009-10-31 Thread Cyberkilla
Apparently it is related to the object applications use to create their
status icon.

I've heard mentions of GTKStatusIcon (supposedly the solution), GTKTrayIcon
and something about an eggicon.
Presumably, these are all interfaces to make the notification area icons, with
GTKStatusIcon tending to be the thing cited as the answer in most of the forums
and mailing lists I've seen.

I don't pretend to know what all of that means, but I do know that it
was working fine until Karmic. If Banshee was using method X to create a
tray icon in Jaunty, it still behaves the same way in Karmic! The
logical conclusion is that something has changed _outside_ of the
applications which are reporting the bug.

Some feedback from someone who knows anything about this would certainly
be appreciated - by everyone here, no doubt.

@Dominik George: I don't think we quite understand each other. I was

not require Evolution to be split into UI and back-end mail daemons. The
reason being, you should be able to hide the window without destroying

Personally, I look forward to this bug being fixed. I only recently
discovered that Pidgin could hide inside of Indicator Applet - I
upgraded from Jaunty and the default setting was Always Show Tray

get Evolution out of my taskbar. This functionality in Evolution has

Hello,

You wouldn't see any problem - you have a CRT. CRT monitors do not have

LCD monitors look horrific when they automatically upscale a tiny image

CRT is an obsolete technology now. I haven't seen a computer shop sell

Sorry for all of these comments!

For some reason, after a few updates and a bit of messing around with
usplash.conf, I have it running at 1024x768 without being all stretched.
Don't get me wrong, it is still blurred because it isn't the native
resolution. Still, it is half decent now.

The actual problem of not being able to set 1440x900 (which is the
native rez of my monitor and set in usplash.conf when I installed
Ubuntu) is still not resolved. This bug report isn't getting a lot of
action; I'd post a fresh bug report, but it would only be a duplicate of
this ancient one.

[Bug 67826] Re: Boot starts with: setting mode nnn x nnn failed

2009-10-23 Thread Cyberkilla
Except, it's the wrong resolution, Tiefflieger. Surely your screen is
larger than that.

Mine is 1440x900, so it's widescreen. Having usplash drop to 1024x768
gives me an blurred, slightly horizontally stretched Ubuntu icon.

[Bug 67826] Re: Boot starts with: setting mode nnn x nnn failed

2009-10-23 Thread Cyberkilla
linusr: That seems to be the underlying theme of this bug report, I
agree.

I get the impression that nobody is listening to use any more;)

Anyway, I think I should also point out that I have an NVidia GeForce
8400M GT graphics card, using the proprietary drivers. However, I was
under the impression that usplash used Vesa, so I don't think the driver
can be at fault. In fact, the console output shows that the nvidia
driver is one of the last things to load before [X]splash starts, so it
isn't even ready in time for usplash.

[Bug 67826] Re: Boot starts with: setting mode nnn x nnn failed

2009-10-22 Thread Cyberkilla
I get this error in Karmic too.

The Ubuntu logo in the middle of the screen looks stretched horizontally
and a bit pixelated.

I have a 1440x900 screen too.

[Bug 456637] Re: Please consider turning powermizer OFF

2009-10-21 Thread Cyberkilla
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-AR41E with an NVidia GeForce 8400M GT graphics
card.

Your problem is almost identical to my own. No driver newer than
185.18.14 will work properly.

The moment I reach the GDM login screen, artefacts appear. The more I
move the mouse cursor, menus, or (especially) drag windows, the more
artefacts occur.

After a moment or two, the computer will freeze, then reboot itself
without my input.

One strange behaviour I found was that I could _prolong_ the length of
time the computer would work by swapping to a TTY for a few seconds, as
soon as I noticed any artefacts. I could then return to an artefact-free
desktop for a moment longer. It would _always_ end up with artefacts and
an eventual freeze/reboot.

[Bug 429599] Re: hardcoded secure shell key location

I have noticed this too. I was concerned that some guy called nate had
put a key on my computer allowing him to SSH to it. Don't laugh:)

[Bug 195605] Re: Sound not configured properly on Sony Vaios using snd_hda_intel

2009-08-20 Thread Cyberkilla
I have the same problem as Michael Doube (comment #40).

I am running a Sony Vaio VGN-AR41E.

Plugging in headphones will mute main speakers, but no sound can be hear from
the headphones either.
The only solution is to specifically choose the headphone slot as the output.

This laptop also has an optical output, which doesn't seem to work at
all - fortunately, I never use it anyway.

Codec: SigmaTel CXD9872AKD
Codec: Conexant ID 2c06

Also, I am running Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 4.

[Bug 277589] Re: sony brighness on a geforce series older than 8 (nvclock works fine)

2009-08-20 Thread Cyberkilla
Hello,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-AR41E, which has an NVidia GeForce 8400M GT graphics
card.
Smartdimmer works for me, and the Fn keys work now too (as of Karmic Alpha 4).

Will your fix work for me? I do not see my card in the .fdi file.

Still, 8400M GT doesn't work either.

[Bug 220696] Re: Connection to SSH via file browser disconnects

2009-07-15 Thread Cyberkilla
I get almost identical messages. I'm running Jaunty.

Steps for me to get this error:
- Mount a remote server via SSH, as explained in the bug report.
- Hibernate/suspend computer for the night.
- Resume in the morning and notice that the nautilus windows showing the remote
folder closes itself when I attempt to use it. In fact, it also closes if I
attempt to save a file on the remote server (already opened in gedit before
hibernation).

The message is the same as above. underlying ssh process died.
Clicking the bookmark under Places on the menu will bring it back, but I have
to browse to the directory and open my tabs again, which is what annoys me.

I had assumed that mounting a remote computer would be transparent to
the user, with gvfs attempting to reconnect/smooth over connection
problems behind the scenes; mounted until the user specifically chooses
to unmount it.

As I said, this was just an assumption - it seems to be the standard
behavior for local mounts though. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 378880] Re: In Docky, order of apps change whenever I summon GNOME Do

2009-06-30 Thread Cyberkilla
FYI, I have this behaviour too, but ONLY when there are no icons on the
dock.

What I mean is, if I remove all dock icons, leaving only the icons of
running applications, the swap around when I summon gnome-do (by
clicking the GNOME Do icon, or WIN+SPACE).

The moment I add even a single shortcut icon to the dock, the odd behaviour
stops.
I hope that narrows it down for you.
