[Bug 148646] [Gutsy] Crash on podcast download
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox Though this bug sounds like this problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/83530 it appears to be effecting the latest version. Rhythmbox crashes frequently when downloading podcasts. The crashes seem to happen mostly between the finish of the download and the updating of the database to indicate a download has completed. I have 13 feeds and have been trying to get the latest show from this feed http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/ta/rss.xml (TA: English Comedy) and finally succeeded but it took over 10 crashes to get there. [Bug 149514] Pidgin is too unstable to be the default IM client for Ubuntu
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pidgin Being a long time user of Gaim and Pidgin, I'm used to it foibles but they have got a great deal worse as a result of the gui / libpurple split. With a slightly dodgy network connection (I have mobile internet), if I 1. select a different conversation tab or 2. attempt to open the conversation menu the GUI sits in a wait state, compiz greys out the window and there is no way to kill pidgin or use other apps until it (maybe) recovers. In the end I have to switch to a VT log in and type "killall pidigin" to recover my X session. I would think that this problem is kicked off by anything that waits for network response before allowing the GUI to continue. I have tried pidgin on a good network connection and this problem doesn't show but the GUI should not become unstable with the network connection and effectively take X with it to the point that the new user would be forced to hard reboot to recover. I've tried pidgin on a slowish modem connection and this problem again rears it's head. To me at least it begs the question as to whether pidgin is stable enough in it's current incarnation to be the default IM client on Ubuntu. ** Affects: pidgin (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Pidgin is too unstable to be the default IM client for Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/149514 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 148646] Re: [Gutsy] Crash on podcast download
Here's another trace: Interestingly this came up too but rhythmbox contiued to work after this point. (rhythmbox:10567): Gtk-CRITICAL **: file /build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.12.0/gtk/gtktreeview.c: line 4890 (gtk_tree_view_bin_expose): assertion `has_next' failed. There is a disparity between the internal view of the GtkTreeView, and the GtkTreeModel. This generally means that the model has changed without letting the view know. Any display from now on is likely to be incorrect. After this point switching to all feeds and organising by status ended in a non-responsive, greyed out by compiz, window. I waited 3/4 hr for it to recover, it didn't, then I manually killed it. [Bug 148646] Re: [Gutsy] Crash on podcast download
It never gets as far as apport. The GUI hangs and never recovers (that's what happened with the second backtrace) rather than segving. As it happens when a podcast has finished downloading but before rhythmdb.xml is updated, it might make sense that it's some thread related write locking problem on rhythmdb.xml which then leaves the gui in a wait state until the write is complete (never). But that's a punt at a possible explanation without looking at the code. This seems to happen with any feed so I assume it would be fairly easy to replicate. -- [Gutsy] Crash on podcast download https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/148646 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 148646] Re: [Gutsy] Crash on podcast download
For me it's simply a matter of start rhythmbox, click the update all feeds button, wait for a podcast to download and then rhythmbox will freeze. I haven't done enough testing of the autmatic updating to know whether it fails in the same way, it's worked once successfully. If a podcast is downloaded successfully and the next one in the queue is kicked off, and that causes the freeze, when rhythmbox restarts it often loses the successful download and even the update on the stream. Attached is my rhythmdb.xml with all the feeds I currently have in use. ** Attachment added: "rhythmdb.xml.gz" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9945929/rhythmdb.xml.gz -- [Gutsy] Crash on podcast download https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/148646 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 149514] Re: Pidgin is too unstable to be the default IM client for Ubuntu
Compiz is certainly an interesting wm. After 4 days of testing (since your comment) with metacity, I've come to the conclusion that you have a point (i.e. that compiz is an issue). Under metacity, when I click a tab or hit a conversation menu I get a pause of 1.5 seconds + before the operation completes (if it completes). Under metacity, pidgin is recovering 95% of the time after the pause. So I think you are definately correct that compiz is having a deleterious effect on pidgin, causing a mere bathing in oil to be fatal. The change to metacity also reduced the number of crashes caused by changing avatar by over half. That said, to receive a 1.5 second + pause in a GUI on a Dual Core T7400 when the system is under no load and to have nothing happen after that pause, repeatedly, indicates an issue with the design. That gui events appear to hit a libpurple event loop, before there is any indication of what is going on (if anything), is problematic for the user: at least if that user is me with a high latency network connection. The fact that I'm pleased that the switch to metacity has reduced the extremely high crash rate to something approaching usable is maybe an indication of the state of pidgin. I've also been testing out empathy. It's simple but it's responsive. I would hope that for the next LTS, pidgin is a distant memory, and one of the upcoming telepathy clients is the default. -- Pidgin is too unstable to be the default IM client for Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/149514 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 127008 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/127008 I can confirm this bug using a Gutsy ubuntustudio alternate CD on a Sony VAIO SZ. [Bug 138717] Re: Gutsy: Switching to 'Extra Effects' in gnome-appearance-properties turns off compiz ezoom
It's inconsistent to start with one one configuration, use gnome- appearance-properties to cycle between options and have random bits missing from the configuration you started off with. Maybe I should explain this in different language. You have an initial compiz configuration. Switching to an alternate configuration using a simple 3 way radio button causes functionality to be lost Switching back to the original configuration using the same radio button does not return the original configuration or functionality. Having ezoom as standard is a very positive thing from the point of view of accessibility for the partially sighted: it beats the original static zoom by a long way. Having it removed in a non-obvious way and for no good reason is bad enough, losing the ability to switch it back on in a trivial manner is terribly inconsistent. -- Gutsy: Switching to 'Extra Effects' in gnome-appearance-properties turns off compiz ezoom https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138717 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 104732] Re: Feisty beta updater fails using fast unreliable net connection
Maybe you should have if only to see whether others had replicated your problem. Not being in your shoes I'm not certain whether it would be worth it. With this one I went through the same process several times before resorting to the command line to fix it. Then I filed the bug. I've come across the "Sub-process gzip returned an error code" many times on Ubuntu at various times. The last time was today. It seems like quite some time since I've had to go to /var/lib/apt/lists and manually delete files to get the system on track again. That error seems to come from partially downloaded package lists or lists that appear to have downloaded properly but are corrupt. You are right of course in that there could have been a major redesign in the code between beta and final which could have had the effect of fixing a bug as a side effect rather than by intent. -- Feisty beta updater fails using fast unreliable net connection https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/104732 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 144433] Gutsy accessibilitiy: ezoom should be default even after switching
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz When I start Gutsy with no compiz config I get ezoom. When I switch between desktop effects mode it drops back to zoom. Ezoom is a useful plugin for the visually impaired. As gnome-mag has a problem following the cursor in many cases, it becomes even more important that there is an alternate method to enlarge portions of the desktop. I've used this plugin visually impaired people who are incapable of focussing on small text. Zooming to a window, panning and live updating make ezoom a much more useful plugin than zoom. If zooming is enabled at all in the default compiz config it should be ezoom imo. I haven't done tests on the cycles ezoom uses over zoom but if there is an issue there, maybe ezoom could be turned on as part of the accessibility framework. I guess for the majority of users this bug might be seen as wishlist at best but accessibility on Ubuntu is seriously flawed and fixing this would make it slightly simpler for the VI to use Ubuntu. ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gutsy accessibilitiy: ezoom should be default even after switching https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144433 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The README lists support for: 05ca:1810 HP Pavilion Webcam - UVC 05ca:1830 Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC2 (for VAIO SZ) 05ca:1832 Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC3 (for VAIO UX) 05ca:1833 Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC2 (for VAIO AR1) 05ca:1834 Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC2 (for VAIO AR2) 05ca:1835 Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC5 (for VAIO SZ) 05ca:1836 Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC4 (for VAIO FE) 05ca:1870 HP Pavilion Webcam / HP Webcam 1000 The module is an easy build against the current kernel headers (linux- headers-2.6.22-12-generic) but does contain firmware which "derived from usbsnoop/sniffusb tracing of various Windows drivers, including some named Mvc25u870.sys, 5U870CAP.sys, and R5U870FLx86.sys." which may create copyright issues. -- Ricoh R5U870 Webcam Driver are not included in Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/120434 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 113693] Re: rhythmbox should provide more music radio stations
That's a nice list, Ericajoy. It's genreless and contains some duplicates and some non-standard characters but it's nice to have a list of radio stations in rhythmbox, which I'm actually using now. The initial rhythmbox iradio playlist is stored here: /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/iradio/iradio-initial.pls Adding here should allow not trouncing podcasts in a user's setup. Did you build this by hand? Is this list is available online? [Bug 104732] Feisty beta updater fails using fast unreliable net connection
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager Hi, Hopefully the subject line describes the problem. Additionally I found that to get the feisty upgrade to get to beyond the "Modifying software channels" stage the second time around I had to remove deb-src lines from source.list to prevent Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/main/source/Sources.gz Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1) despite the url being valid and the net connection being up. That's weird. Back to the first run: my network connection is a mobile connection and I'm on the edge of network availability so the connection cycles between GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA. When it does this it often interrupts a download and sometimes packets hit buffer limitations and are dropped. The installer complained about not being able to find the apache2 package, which seems like fairly gross misreporting :) Additionally, as mentioned, it put the system into a position where it could not be upgraded. Why it should hit the deb-src problem on second run, I'm not sure. ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Feisty beta updater fails using fast unreliable net connection https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/104732 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 92777] Re: Problem installing sl-modem package module not found
I'm getting this too (installed Feisty today). sl-modem-daemon will work using alsa drivers in the majority of cases. The ungrab_winmodem module is used to free a modem that's been grabbed by the standard serial driver. This seems to be a problem with some but not all cards that might use sl-modem-daemon. the source for ungrab_winmodem is in sl-modem-source but is not built by default. It's normally easily built but fails in feisty because it can't find linux/config.h in the kernel headers package. Also sl-modem-source will not build under feisty currently: make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/modules/sl-modem/drivers' > gcc-4.1 -I/lib/modules/2.6.20-14-generic/build/include -o kernel-ver > > kernel-ver.c > kernel-ver.c: In function ‘main’: > kernel-ver.c:11: error: ‘UTS_RELEASE’ undeclared (first use in this > > function) > kernel-ver.c:11: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once > > kernel-ver.c:11: error: for each function it appears in.) > > make[2]: *** [kernel-ver] Error 1 Smartlink appear to have been bought out by connexant and I've yet to find the source on linmodems.org. fesity's version is higher than the debian unstable version. [Bug 92777] Re: Problem installing sl-modem package module not found
OK ungrab-winmodem builds with a simple change to the source linux/version.h becomes linux/autoconf.h in ungrab-winmodem.c https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sl-modem/+bug/103705 suggests building the debian sid version and this works fine.

[Bug 104732] Feisty beta updater fails using fast unreliable net connection
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager Hi, Hopefully the subject line describes the problem.
OK ungrab-winmodem builds with a simple change to the source linux/version.h becomes linux/autoconf.h in ungrab-winmodem.c https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sl-modem/+bug/103705 suggests building the debian sid version and this works fine.
