[Bug 290848] Re: gdmsetup crashes with Segmentation Fault

2009-04-05 Thread Dag-Erling Smørgrav
I had the exact same issue on my Lenovo T60 running Hardy. After
googling around and reading this, I ejected the blank CD I had in the
drive, and gdmsetup works.

[Bug 282609] [NEW] [intrepid] i810 video driver regression

2008-10-13 Thread Dag-Erling Smørgrav
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Lenovo ThinkCentre M55 (8811-92G) with integrated Intel 965Q graphics
chipset. Sony 1600x1200 flat panel connected to TMDS-1 with single-link
DVI-D cable.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Lenovo Device 1011
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at d000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Memory at c000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
I/O ports at 3400 [size=8]
Capabilities: [90] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit- Queue=0/0
Enable-
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2

This worked correctly with Hardy (see attached configuration file)

Upgraded from latest Hardy to Intrepid on 2008-10-09, using xserver-
xorg-video-intel 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu6.

When run with old xorg.conf (from Hardy), X loads the correct driver, but
terminates with "no screens found".
X -configure produces a minimal xorg.conf that works - but only at 1152x864:

% xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1152 x 864, maximum 1360 x 1360
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TMDS-1 connected 1152x864+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x
0mm
   1360x768 59.8
   1152x864 60.0*
   1024x768 60.0
   800x60060.3
   640x48059.9

Using the vesa driver, I get full resolution (1600x1200) but obviously
no acceleration.

[Bug 279545] [NEW] zsh completion broken for svn 1.5

2008-10-07 Thread Dag-Erling Smørgrav
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: zsh

Fully up-to-date Hardy Heron as of 1008-10-07 with zsh-4.3.4-24ubuntu1
and subversion-1.5.1dfsg1-1ubuntu2~hardy2 from hardy-backports.

Subversion command completion fails:

% svn add
_arguments:comparguments:303: invalid argument: ARG

This goes for any subversion command, not just svn add.

The reason is the following line that appears in 'svn help $command' for
any $command:

--config-dir ARG : read user configuration files from
directory ARG

In 1.4 and earlier, it looked like this:

--config-dir arg : read user configuration files from
directory ARG

The completion spec barfs on s/arg/ARG/.

The minimal fix is to replace every occurrence of "/ arg/:arg:" with "/
(arg|ARG)/:arg:" in
/usr/share/zsh/4.3.4/functions/Completion/Unix/_subversion; see attached
patch.

[Bug 118948] Re: gnome-compiz-preferences does not start

2008-03-01 Thread Dag-Erling Smørgrav
I see the same thing as Juan Pablo Salazar Bertín and George Pollard. I
decided to look a little further into it:

1) I start gnome-compiz-preferences from a terminal, and nothing happens.
2) I start it again from another terminal, and the dialog pops up. At the exact
same time, in the first terminal, I get the following error messages:

(gnome-compiz-preferences:10673): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **:
gnome_vfs_get_uri_from_local_path: assertion `g_path_is_absolute
(local_full_path)' failed

** (gnome-compiz-preferences:10673): WARNING **: plugin inputzoom isn't
installed

3) I have verified (by pressing Ctrl-C in each of the two terminals in
succession) that it is in fact the first instance that pops up, not the second.
In other words, starting the second instance somehow unwedges the first one.

A little more digging shows there are actually two different issues at
play here. One of them (BadAlloc when using compiz) is indeed a
duplicate of #111257. The other (BadMatch when using fglrx) is a
duplicate of #130696. That one hasn't been fixed yet, but several

Same as Chris Waigl. Worked fine with Feisty. The previously mentioned

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Really annoying, as I just got season 5 of the Simpsons for Christmas. I
watched the first four seasons without a hitch on Feisty.

I was able to watch the first episode using totem-gstreamer. I also
tried vlc, but the image was very jumpy, and navigation was almost
impossible as I could not see the mouse pointer while it was inside the
vlc window.

Correction, I was able to watch the first episode using mplayer. With the
gutsy-backports version, I was even able to see (but not use) the menus. With
totem-gstreamer, I was not able to see anything but an error message about
missing codecs.

[Bug 50430] Re: NIS has problems starting before the network comes up

2007-08-16 Thread Dag-Erling Smørgrav
See the attached log. The first ten or so instances are from
/etc/init.d/nis in the normal startup sequence. The second-to-last
instance is from the beginning of /etc/rc.local. The final instance is
from /etc/rc.local immediately before /etc/init.d/nis is run again
(successfully).

Note that ypbind doesn't seem to notice that anything's wrong until it
fails to resolve the address of the NIS server, at which point it exits.

When doing this manually, before I set up the wait-for-DNS-to-come-up
loop in /etc/rc.local, I often saw nm-tool report an IP address but no
gateway or DNS.

One thing that just occurred to me, could this be caused by
interoperability issues between NetworkManager and the specific NIC

[Bug 50430] Re: NIS has problems starting before the network comes up

2007-08-14 Thread Dag-Erling Smørgrav
The NIS failure is obviously highly visible since it does not fail
gracefully (i.e. it will not magically fix itself once the network is
up) and it prevents you from logging in, but this is not just a NIS
issue; it affects anything that requires a working network connection
and / or DNS to start (NTP; LDAP; autofs, if you use NIS or LDAP maps).
I use the following hack in /etc/rc.local:

echo -n "Waiting for network to come up..."
while :; do
nm-tool | egrep -q 'DNS:[[:space:]]+[1-9]' && break
sleep 1
echo -n "."
done
echo " OK"

/etc/init.d/ntp restart
/etc/init.d/nis restart
/etc/init.d/autofs restart

Just checking for an IP address will not work, because nm-tool reports a
valid IP address almost immediately, but it takes almost a minute for
DNS to show up. I have no idea why DHCP is so slow on this network.
