[Bug 1959508] Re: enable BMFF support in exiv2

2022-03-07 Thread Damon Lynch
I can confirm CR3 support is not enabled in exiv2 0.27.5-1. It very much
appears the steps outlined by Robin Mills (aka clanmills) have not been
undertaken by the Debian packager.

[Bug 1963694] Re: [FFe] Update rapid-photo-downloader for Python 3.10 compatibility

2022-03-05 Thread Damon Lynch
I am the developer of both the original package and the new dependency.
The heart of the new dependency is code that has been taken from the
original package, and made into a standalone package that command line
scripts and Python GUI programs can use.

In other words, the only reason the new dependency exists is to allow
other developers to take advantage of code that I already developed that
provides a feature found in many programs. In this particular case, that
is the ability to open the user's preferred file manager with one or
more files highlighted in their containing directory.

The rest of the changes in the Rapid Photo Downloader package arise from
high priority bug fixes the Rapid Photo Downloader community has been
requesting for some years, such as the ability to fit the program's main
window onto small screens such as 1024x768, the handling of daylight
savings, and the proper handling of iOS devices. I know they are high
priority fixes because apart from bug reports, I surveyed users and
these are the changes they said they wanted to see done. As well there
are many other small fixes that would make no sense not to include, e.g.
keeping up with recent changes in xsettings when running on high DPI
screens.

[Bug 1963694] [NEW] Update package for Python 3.10 compatibility

2022-03-04 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

To run Rapid Photo Downloader with Python 3.10 (now the default in
jammy), the rapid-photo-downloader package must be updated to version
0.9.30. If it is not, it will crash at startup.

I am the developer of Rapid Photo Downloader and I am happy work with
Ubuntu packagers to get this done.

The volunteer Debian packager has not responded to package update
requests for some months. I think it reasonable to assume he will not
likely be able to contribute before jammy is released.

[Bug 1873944] Re: [SRU] Upgrade rapid-photo-downloader to version 0.9.24

2020-07-21 Thread Damon Lynch
Brian if you may, allow me a minute to put to one side the (important)
micro features of this issue and look at the bigger picture.

You are a professional whose job it is to manage bugs, always keeping in
mind the reality that fixes can have unintended consequences. You have
systems and processes in place that keep you sane and the operation
transparent. That's all good. It makes sense.

I develop the code, manage the project, maintain its website, write its
documentation, ingest bug reports, manage translations, attempt to make
its distribution better in whatever ways I can, etc. No one pays me
(although I occasionally receive a donation). I'm a volunteer whose time
is truly very limited. I have other things going on in my life, like my
unfinished doctoral dissertation.

(I imagine the packager for the program in Debian is also a volunteer
facing similar time constraints.)

The fact is, the Rapid Photo Downloader release in Ubuntu 20.04 is a
snapshot in time of the Rapid Photo Downloader project. That's it. There
is literally nothing special about it. Let's not be overly devoted to
it. It has a serious problem that I fixed before Ubuntu 20.04 was
released, but not quickly enough for it to make past the release freeze.
It also contains fixes for issues that are truly meaningful to a set of
users that were fixed before the 20.04 release, but again didn't make it
past the freeze. Version 0.9.24 of Rapid Photo Downloader is the most
stable release of the program I've made in the 13 years I've been
developing it. I know that empirically (reports from users) and I know
it from my experience from running the project.

So when I'm confronted with the prospect of justifying a bug fix release
in what looks like excruciating detail. . . . I hope you can see what it
looks like from my end of the process. It's all a bit much really. It's
like I'm being crushed by the process. I can't do it all. I see the
rationale for the process, but I can't cope with it. At this moment,
it's a bridge too far.

The thing is, the Rapid Photo Downloader release in Ubuntu 20.04 is a
really big deal because Ubuntu 20.04 is going to be used by so many
users for so long, and I know I'm going to get bug reports for the Rapid
Photo Downloader package in it for years to come.

And that's painful to think about. It leads to questions as to whether
the processes in place are alienating to other developers in my
position. It leads me to question whether I should be scaling back my
ambitions for the project.

In the bigger picture, I don't think Canonical wants this to happen to
this project or any other volunteer driven FOSS project.

[Bug 1873944] Re: Upgrade rapid-photo-downloader to version 0.9.23

2020-06-02 Thread Damon Lynch
The new feature is a usability fix that makes it more likely the user
will create a bug report with the information I require to fix the
problem being reported. I guess that might be a bit of a stretch? Please
use your best judgement. I have zero experience with SRUs prior to this.

If you are going to reuse the Debian package, please be aware that
Debian does not package gir1.2-unity-5.0. This package is necessary for
Rapid Photo Downloader to display app emblems and a progress bar in
Ubuntu Gnome and in KDE, which is a great feature that I enjoy a lot.
Unfortunately the Debian packager did not update the rules section as I
suggested in this bug report: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=954747 , so it needs to be added manually.

It's also a shame many developers mistakenly assume that libunity is
tied only to the Unity desktop, when in fact it's not!

[Bug 1873944] Re: Upgrade rapid-photo-downloader to version 0.9.23

2020-06-02 Thread Damon Lynch
Hi Erich, I have revamped the bug report description using the guide you
suggested. Apologies if it is now too long!

** Description changed:

- I'm the developer of Rapid Photo Downloader. Version 0.9.23 (already
- released) contains an important bug fix for a segfault that occurs on
- some but not all systems due to Gtk being called incorrectly during
- application startup.
+ [Bug Description Edited June 2, 2020]

- Version 0.9.23 contains other bug fixes which are less critical but
- still welcome. If an SRU is created in my opinion it would be best to
- include these additional fixes as they are extremely unlikely to cause
- any further problems.
+ [Impact]

- The changes from 0.9.22 to 0.9.23 are as follows, in order of
- importance:
+ Rapid Photo Downloader 0.9.22 contains a bug that means for some users,
+ it causes a segfault during startup every time it is launched. (Other
+ users are unaffected. For example, I have never been able to replicate
+ the bug on any of my systems.) There is no workaround for the bug except
+ to upgrade it to a newer release.

- - Fixed bug #1872338 segfault on startup. When running under a Gtk-based
-desktop, the application now queries xsettings to detect if monitor
-scaling is enabled. In the previous release, Gtk was queried directly,
-which caused segfaults on some systems.
+ This is a report from a user who encountered the problem (left in a
+ review in Ubuntu Software):

- - Fixed bug #1872188: sqlite3.OperationalError when generating
- thumbnails.
+ "When I reinstalled my OS to upgrade to 20.04 (Studio), this app came
+ preinstalled, but it wouldn't open. I tried uninstalling and
+ reinstalling from Snap Store, but issue persisted. Installed using
+ script from main website (Version 0.9.24) and works fine now."

- - Fixed bug #1873233: RAW and JPG don't synchronize when using stored
- number.
+ The backstory: Rapid Photo Downloader is written using Qt5. Earlier this
+ year I improved the program to function properly on HighDPI screens. A
+ side effect of this fix was that for a handful of users on displays with
+ no screen scaling, a bug somewhere in the X window / Qt rendering chain
+ made the program UI utterly broken. For a screenshot, see
+ https://discuss.pixls.us/t/graphical-issues-on-xubuntu-18-04/17405

- - Fixed bug where HEIF/HEIC thumbnails on a camera were not being generated
-until they were downloaded.
+ My solution to this problem was to disable HighDPI support on systems
+ where the screen scaling factor was set to 1.0. Why enable it when it's
+ not needed, right? But this requires querying the screen scaling before
+ initializing Rapid Photo Downloader's UI, because Qt5 requires HighDPI
+ be set before instantiating QApplication. Unfortunately when running
+ under X, Gtk and Qt/KDE use incompatible methods to enable and report
+ screen scaling.

- - Fixed bug #1873057: Add ORI to list of supported image formats.
+ So in sum, Rapid Photo Downloader needs to query the system's screen
+ scaling before initializing its own application window, and how it does
+ that depends on whether it is running in a Gtk or Qt based desktop.

- - When generating video thumbnails for phones and tablets, the entire video
-will now be downloaded and cached. Previously only a portion of the video
was
-downloaded, in the hope that this portion could generate the thumbnail, but
-unfortunately it did not always render. This new behavior will slow down
-thumbnail generation, but does ensure the thumbnail will be rendered.
+ The bug in Rapid Photo Downloader 0.9.22 is caused by calling the
+ Gtk/GDK API without first calling gtk_init() during application startup.
+ Upon becoming aware of the bug, I (the application developer) discussed
+ the problem with Emmanuele Bassi and Matthias Clasen, and they strong
+ urged me to query screen scaling using XSETTINGS, and not the GTK/GDK
+ API. They were correct. Querying XSETTINGS has fixed the bug.

2020-05-11 Thread Damon Lynch
To clarify, Zobeid Zuma has hit the startup bug with version 0.9.22 (as
packaged in Ubuntu 20.04), which was fixed in 0.9.23.

Since this bug report was filed, there has been another Rapid Photo
Downloader release:

https://launchpad.net/rapid/pyqt/0.9.24/+download/rapid-photo-
downloader-0.9.24.tar.gz

As the developer I'm happy to report that the changes in 0.9.24 are
highly unlikely to cause any other regressions compared to 0.9.22.

[Bug 1873944] [NEW] SRU request for rapid-photo-downloader 0.9.22-0ubuntu1 to fix startup segfault on focal

[Bug 1871315] Re: FFe: rapid-photo-downloader 0.9.20

2020-04-11 Thread Damon Lynch
Thank you for the approval. And thank you for making libqt5svg5 an
explicit dependency.

If there is still time I strongly encourage packaging version 0.9.22,
because it contains several important bug fixes compared to version
0.9.20.

https://launchpad.net/rapid/pyqt/0.9.22/+download/rapid-photo-
downloader-0.9.22.tar.gz

Relevant fixes include, in order of importance:

 - Fixed bug #1871649: Window corruption when application scaling enabled on
certain desktop environments. The application now uses Qt and Gdk to query
whether any monitor has scaling enabled. If no scaling is enabled on any
monitor, then Rapid Photo Downloader will not enable automatic scaling.

This is a brutal bug when it occurs! See
https://forum.qt.io/topic/113496/significant-window-corruption-with-
hidpi-scaling-enabled-on-x11-qt-5-12-5-14

 - Fixed bugs where camera insertion and removal was not being detected in some
circumstances. In KDE, it was camera removal. In Gnome-like systems where
auto mounting of cameras is disabled or not functional, it was insertion.

 - Fixed bug #1870566: Missing default locale causes startup failure.

 - More robustly handle a camera being unexpectedly removed during scanning,
   thumbnailing, and copying files.

 - Fixed bug introduced in 0.9.20 when resetting program preferences back to
default values in the Preferences Dialog window.

 - Added an option to extract photo metadata (including thumbnails) using only
ExifTool. Rapid Photo Downloader defaults to using Exiv2, relying on ExifTool
only when Exiv2 does not support the file format being read. Exiv2 is
fast, accurate, and almost always reliable, but it crashes when extracting
metadata from a small number of files, such as DNG files produced by Leica M8
   cameras.

 - Updated Czech, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish
   translations.

 - Fixed a bug where the number of photos and videos for a camera or phone would
not be displayed under the devices section if the preference value "Scan only
specific folders on devices" was not enabled.

[Bug 1871315] Re: FFe: rapid-photo-downloader 0.9.20

2020-04-07 Thread Damon Lynch
Thank you very much indeed for your work Timo to get the latest version
of Rapid Photo Downloader packaged for Ubuntu 20.04!

Today I released 0.9.21, which contains bug fixes. Debian bug report:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=956125

Package:

https://launchpad.net/rapid/pyqt/0.9.21/+download/rapid-photo-
downloader-0.9.21.tar.gz

Coincidentally, the release notes are now much less verbose:

https://launchpad.net/rapid/pyqt/0.9.21/+download/RELEASE_NOTES.rst

Please let me know if anything needs fixing in the release, and I'll do
my best to fix it in time for 20.04.

[Bug 1762222] Re: will not mount or read card in camera

2018-04-08 Thread Damon Lynch
You are using a version that is years old. Update to the newest version.
You can do that by either installing it from
http://damonlynch.net/rapid/download.html , or waiting until 18.04 is
released and installing the version found in that in release.

[Bug 1739905] [NEW] kernel update never finishes with proprietary nvidia

2017-12-23 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

While I have the Nvidia proprietary driver installed, am currently
running the monitor off of the CPU's built-in graphics adapter. Two GTX
1070s are present.

The kernel update always gets stuck at the DKMS stage, e.g.:

run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 4.13.0-21-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-4.13.0-21-generic

When the monitor is plugged into one of the Nvidia adapters, the kernel
updates as expected.

[Bug 1653323] Re: Severe screen flicker on Unity when terminal maximized

2017-01-07 Thread Damon Lynch
I just tried the nouveau driver in 4.9.0-11-generic. Now while it didn't
flicker, what it did do was exhibit the very start of the problem, which
manifests as subtle vertical bars in the top panel's dark brown bar. So
it may not be an Nvidia problem, but a kernel problem, that may have
been fixed in 4.10.

[Bug 1653323] Re: Severe screen flicker on Unity when terminal maximized

2017-01-07 Thread Damon Lynch
Running the mainline kernel 4.10-rc2 and the nouveau driver on 17.04
means the bug does not appear; it does appear with the Nvidia 375 driver
in the regular 17.04 kernel. The 4.10-rc2 kernel is significant because
in the 4.9 and earlier kernels, the mouse cursor does not move from the
top left corner of the screen.

[Bug 1653594] Re: 17.04 installer crashed while or shortly after installing grub2

2017-01-03 Thread Damon Lynch
Update: I didn't realize this Desktop could distinguish between 'legacy
bios' and UEFI in the firmware (bios). My existing operating systems are
installed in legacy bios mode. When I booted from the USB installer
using firmware's boot chooser, I chose the UEFI version without
realizing the significance of doing so.

I have now installed 17.04, having booted the USB installer in legacy
bios mode. I do think that the installer could give much clearer
guidance than the current obscure error message it pops up near the
beginning of the installation process. I found the instructions here to
be very helpful indeed: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

[Bug 1653323] [NEW] Severe screen flicker on Unity when terminal maximized

2016-12-30 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

The screen experiences severe flicker when using Nvidia 375.26 on a GTX
1070 in 16.10, Unity Desktop -- but only when the terminal is in the top
left of the screen or maximized, and is full of text.

I made a video illustrating the problem: http://damonlynch.net/share
/Ubuntu1610screen-flicker.mp4

Driver is from the "graphics-drivers" PPA.

At this point I don't know if it's a hardware problem or software
problem -- I've never seen anything like it before. I've ruled out the
DisplayPort cable as a problem, because it exhibits the same problem
with two different cables.

The LCD is a Dell UP3017.

[Bug 1630013] [NEW] glxinfo infinite loop, no live image desktop login

2016-10-03 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

On today's Yakkety Yak daily image I'm running into an infinite loop
with glxinfo such that no desktop shows on login. The desktop is black
(no cursor) and logging in via a console shows glxinfo running at 100%.

Package version info according to packages.ubuntu.com is 1:1.0.12-2.

My apologies but this bug report has been submitted manually because I
could not install Yakkety Yak due to this bug. I'm running an encrypted
/home and must be able to install from the live image desktop with /home
already mounted.

Hardware: Quadro 1000M (Fermi) on a Lenovo W520 (Sandy Bridge quad
core).

[Bug 1566218] [NEW] freeze exception: change package name

2016-04-05 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

The package name should be renamed to "python-gphoto2cffi", and its
python module should be "gphoto2cffi".

The package name has very recently been renamed in Debian by its
maintainer. The package has gone into the NEW queue for manual
processing.

Rationale
-

Several python bindings exist for gphoto2. The two most prominent are:

  *  "python-gphoto2": https://pypi.python.org/pypi/gphoto2/
  *  "gphoto2-cffi" gphoto2-cffi: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/gphoto2-cffi

The second of these, gphoto2-cffi, was packaged in Debian as "python-
gphoto2", and that it is what it is currently known as in Ubuntu. The
first project is not currently packaged in Debian. As you might notice,
the name of the Debian package is the same as the first project, not the
second, which is confusing. Although first project, python-gphoto2, is
not currently packaged in Debian / Ubuntu, it has evolved into a mature
project that provides the most comprehensive python binding available to
gphoto2. In other words, it provides important functionality that other
bindings do not. I hope that the project python-gphoto2 will soon be
packaged in Debian/Ubuntu.

Until earlier this year, both project's module namepspaces clashed with
each other. Until the situation was resolved by mutual agreement of both
project's upstream developers, it was impossible to have both installed
simultaneously, because they both required this import:

>>> import gphoto2

The problem was resolved when the developer of gphoto2-cffi agreed to
rename the imported module as gphoto2cffi instead of gphoto2. This
module name change has been reflected in github:
https://github.com/jbaiter/gphoto2-cffi/commit/6de87c88e56b59588fe1be48e9227dfa00382b91

Although the gphoto2-cffi project has not had a new release since then,
its Debian maintainer has already renamed the package and the python
module name with the assistance of Dmitry Shachnev.

[Bug 1545450] [NEW] Severe Qt visual corruption with default Qt theme under Unity

2016-02-14 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

No doubt 'unity' is the wrong package, but I don't know the correct
package name for the default theme when running Qt applications under
Unity. Apologies for that.

Problem: when running many Qt applications in the Unity desktop, they
are unusable because of severe visual corruption. The corruption is
caused by the default Qt theme. On the command line, the error output is
like this:

(vlc:8190): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion
'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

I have attached a screenshot showing the About window for VLC. The
contents of the window are corrupted, and the window's title bar extend
across the desktop.

When a Qt application allows the use of another theme, choosing a theme
like "motif" eliminates the problem. This is why I'm fairly certain the
bug is triggered by using the default Qt theme, and not Qt itself, or Qt
applications. Moreover, on IRC another user could not replicate the
problem when running under KDE.

The problem does not exist in Wily. Thank you.

[Bug 1451728]

2016-02-08 Thread Damon Lynch
Martin, I reported this bug May last year. I don't know what is more of
an eye-opener -- the fact that it came up at all (indicating developers
and even packagers don't install more than one desktop), or your "not
our problem" response to the news that the bug is critical (which it
is).

[Bug 1518553] [NEW] cpu_count(logical=False) returns wrong value

2015-11-21 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

The version of psutil in Ubuntu 15.10 / 16.04 is 2.2.1. The method
cpu_count() in this version of the package has a bug that is fixed in
version 3.2.2.

Illustration of the problem:

$ python3
Python 3.4.3+ (default, Oct 14 2015, 16:03:50)
[GCC 5.2.1 20151010] on linux
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import psutil
>>> psutil.__version__
'2.2.1
>>> psutil.cpu_count(logical=True)
8
>>> psutil.cpu_count(logical=False)
1

The value 1 is wrong. It should be 4.

It works using psutil 3.3.2, installed in a python virtualenv:
$ python3
Python 3.4.3+ (default, Oct 14 2015, 16:03:50)
[GCC 5.2.1 20151010] on linux

>>> import psutil
>>> psutil.__version__
'3.2.2'
>>> psutil.cpu_count(logical=True)

>>> psutil.cpu_count(logical=False)

[Bug 1432169] [NEW] general protection fault: 0000 [#1] SMP

2015-03-14 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

If this bug is related to my last session, which locked up, I was not
doing anything special: I was using Firefox while talking on Skype. I
had to restart using Alt+Sys-Required+REISUB, as all other mouse and
keyboard input had frozen.

[Bug 1431179] [NEW] USB 4G modem detected as USB mass storage

2015-03-12 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

I lack the technical knowledge to know if this is a bug in udev, systemd
or another component.

After the switch to systemd, my 4G Huawei USB modem no longer functions
as a modem unless I run usb_modeswitch to flip its state from USB mass
storage. The command I issue and its output is below, which also show
the Vendor and Product ID.

Strangely, it does not do this every time. Yesterday when I updated
using apt-get dist-upgrade upon reboot the modem worked as expected. But
from a cold boot this morning it did not.

$ sudo usb_modeswitch -v 0x12d1 -p 0x1f01 -J

[Bug 1289975] [NEW] Sync package request from Debian with critical bug fix

2014-03-09 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

Debian Unstable has been updated to the latest upstream version.
Compared to the version in Universe, the updated package contains a
critical bug fix for bug #1025908, as well as other bug fixes,
translation updates and a minor new feature.

https://packages.debian.org/source/unstable/rapid-photo-downloader

The upstream Changelog diff compared to the version in Universe:

Version 0.4.10
--

2014-02-23

Updated Catalan and Portuguese translations.

Fixed bug in translations for term Back up.

Version 0.4.9
-

2014-01-21

Updated Catalan and Spanish translations.

Fixed occasional incorrect use of term backup.

Version 0.4.9 Beta 3

2014-01-20

Fixed packaging bug.

Version 0.4.9 Beta 2

2014-01-20

Added file verification of downloaded and backed up files.

Updated Dutch, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Serbian, Spanish and Swedish
translations. Added Catalan translation.

Version 0.4.9 Beta 1

2014-01-16

Fixed bugs #1025908 and #1186955: Finalize fix for severe performance problems
and crashes that arose from the combination of Gnome's GIO file functionality
and python's multiprocessing. The solution was to remove GIO and replace it with
regular python file processing. A nice side effect is that the program now runs
faster than ever before.

Fixed bug #1268291: Handle cases where filesystem metadata (e.g. file
permissions) could not be copied when writing to certain file systems such as
NTFS. The program will now consider a file is copied succesfully even if the
filesystem metadata could not be updated.

Fixed bug #1269032: When Sync RAW + JPEG sequence numbers is enabled, the
program fails to properly deal with photos with corrupt EXIF metadata.

Fixed bug #1269079: Download failure when folder exists for only one of photo or
video on auto detected back devices.

Updated Norwegian and Serbian translations.

Version 0.4.8
-

2013-12-31

Fixed bug #1263237: Added support for MPO files (3D images). Thanks to Jan
Kaluza for reporting it.

Fixed bug #1263483: Some terms in the user interface are not being translated.
Thanks to Jose Luis Tirado for alerting me to the problem, which has probably
existed for some time.

Updated Dutch, French Italian, Polish and Spanish translations.

[Bug 1268119] [NEW] ICC color profile application lost during login

2014-01-11 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

I assume colord is the correct package to report this bug against, but
to be honest I really don't know!

Symptoms:
I have an ICC color profile which is not being applied at login. Upon logging
in, the system (Unity) appears to use it for a second or so, but then something
happens which results in it being unloaded. This never happened in Ubuntu
13.10.

Workaround:
Go to system settings, color. Note the correct profile is selected (your custom
profile). Choose the default (system) profile (i.e. not your custom profile),
and then again choose the profile that is meant to be used. The correct color
profile will now be used until logout.

Re: [Bug 1074028] Re: Port all pyexiv2 apps to GExiv2

2013-01-01 Thread Damon Lynch
I understand for all practical purposes, the introspection bindings depend
on python 3 and GTK 3. Rapid Photo Downloader currently depends on PIL,
which is not yet ported to Python 3. Ripping out PIL, converting to GTK3 +
introspection + python3 seems like a massive undertaking! And all this with
no actual practical end benefit for the user. On the other hand, if gphoto2
has an introspection binding, that would be a benefit, because finally the
user might be able to download from a camera without the nightmare of the
buggy gphoto2/gvfs bindings.

On Tue, Jan 1, 2013 at 4:02 PM, Robert Bruce Park robert.p...@canonical.com
 wrote:

Porting of Rapid Photo Downloader is blocked because this app is still
using all the old static gtk/gobject bindings, which conflict with the
gobject introspection magic that is necessary to import GExiv2. The code
that implements GExiv2 for rapid photo downloader is largely done, but
it won't actually run correctly until the rest of rpd gets ported to the
 new introspection bindings.

I have spoken directly with the maintainer of pyexiv2 and we have
agreed that pyexiv2 is an abandoned project that will never support

in terms of simplicity, and maintainability.

Packages marked as affected by this bug were designated so because
they have a dependency on the pyexiv2 package. They will need to be

Re: [Bug 1074028] Re: Port all pyexiv2 apps to GExiv2

2013-01-01 Thread Damon Lynch
Not having to also move to python 3 does make it easier. I understand that
I would need to completely redo the glade files to move to GTK3 - is that
correct? Based on other projects, the time the transition would take in
hours would be how much? Am I looking at one week of full time work, or
more like 2 weeks, or 4 weeks or more?

I've checked the gphoto2 page, and as yet there are no introspection
bindings for it. The gvfs/libgphoto2 code has been broken since it was
first developed - it works with some cameras, and not at all with others.
It seems the Gnome developers simply do not have access to a sufficient
range of cameras, so any bugs reported are apparently not fixed. Users of
Rapid Photo Downloader blame my program, of course! There is no python
binding to libgphoto2. I guess the Shotwell developers wrote their own
wrapper code for vala.

back. Porting to introspection doesn't force you to also port to python
3 immediately, what it does is *allows* you to port to Python 3 at your
 leisure.

The benefit to your users is that your application will continue to
exist. Python 2 and GTK 2 are going away. Sure, it might be years before
they're truly gone, but it will happen eventually. Imagine for a moment
if your application only ran with Python 1 and GTK 1. Nobody would even
be able to run it because nobody packages those old versions anymore.
They're unsupported, unmaintained, and if you found a bug in the APIs,
it would simply never get fixed. Python 2 and GTK 2 are slowly moving in
that direction and if you don't port away from them, users will
eventually lose the ability to run your program as distros stop shipping
 those versions.

I am not familiar with gphoto2 specifically, but yes, the introspection
bindings are well maintained and if you find bugs in them, you can
reasonably expect to report those and get them fixed. So yes, you'll be
able to get away from the 'nightmare' of unmaintained, buggy bindings.

 Bug description:
I have spoken directly with the maintainer of pyexiv2 and we have
agreed that pyexiv2 is an abandoned project that will never support
Python3. Therefore, anything that depends on pyexiv2 is going to be
stuck on Python 2 until they port to GExiv2. GExiv2 is a clear winner
in terms of simplicity, and maintainability.

Packages marked as affected by this bug were designated so because
they have a dependency on the pyexiv2 package. They will need to be
ported to GExiv2 before they can be ported to Python 3. Here is the
popcon data for these packages, which may hopefully allow us to
prioritize this work by installation popularity:

Re: [Bug 1013480] Re: downloading video never finished

2012-06-16 Thread Damon Lynch
It doesn't have space because for some reason the temporary directory
in which the file is being initially copied may not be the external
drive. I have emailed you a newer copy of the program that will
provide extra debugging output. Please extract the tar file, run the
program from the tar file, and copy and paste the --debug output into
this bug report. There is no need to manually install the program from
the tar file -- you can run it from it's own directory.

[Bug 717843] Re: python2.7 python imaging (PIL) dumps core with buffer overflow

2011-09-26 Thread Damon Lynch
It works on Oneiric beta 2 with the original TIFF file in this bug
report. Everything also works as expected when taking the resulting PIL
image and doing things like passing it between two processes with a
pipe.

I will mark it as fixed for Oneiric - I hope that is ok with everyone.

I don't think this bug is specific to a CompactFlash reader. I have
since learned that this bug also affects a ExpressCard USB 3 device I
have. Another user (presumably using a recent spin of Fedora) reports
that his ExpressCard Firewire device also has the exact same problem.

[Bug 713478] [NEW] ExpressCard compact flash card fails to hotplug

2011-02-04 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

I'm using Natty alpha 2 with the latest updates, running on a Lenovo
T400s. When inserting a Lexar ExpressCard CompactFlash (CF) reader into
the ExpressCard slot after Ubuntu is already booted, nothing happens.
There is nothing in dmesg to indicate an event has occurred.

This is the product: http://www.lexar.com/products/lexar-professional-
expresscard-compactflash-cf-reader?category=213

If the card reader and card is present at boot time, the card is mounted
as expected. I will reboot and attach some relevant information that
shows the hardware messages in dmesg when the card is mounted at boot
time.

The machine is in AHCI mode. Hotplugging worked under Maverick.

[Bug 713487] [NEW] ExpressCard compact flash card DMA setting is wrong

2011-02-04 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

I'm using Natty alpha 2 with the latest updates, running on a Lenovo
T400s. When using a Lexar ExpressCard CompactFlash (CF) reader in the
ExpressCard slot, the speed of this high speed device is very slow
because the wrong settings are being used by the kernel.

This is the product: http://www.lexar.com/products/lexar-professional-
expresscard-compactflash-cf-reader?category=213

Some relevant dmesg output:

[Bug 711093] Re: [Natty, Maverick, Lucid] External monitor connected w/ Display Port power management not working when laptop lid closed

2011-02-01 Thread Damon Lynch
A clarification: when I say the bug does not occur when the laptop lid
is open, I should have added the important proviso that the laptop LCD
panel should be an active display in addition to the external monitor.
That is, both displays must be displaying the desktop. It is not
important which mode is used, i.e. whether Same image in all monitors
is checked in the Gnome Monitor Preferences or not.

If the lid is merely open but the laptop LCD is powered off, the bug
occurs.

[Bug 711093] Re: [Natty, Maverick, Lucid] External monitor connected w/ Display Port power management not working when laptop LCD powered off

2011-02-01 Thread Damon Lynch
Additional comment from linux thinkpad mailing list participant Alex
Deucher:

I think this may be a logic issue in gnome power manager (GPM) rather
than the driver. If the following commands executed from a terminal
blank the displays properly:
sleep 5; xset dpms force off
then the driver is working correctly. I have similar issues on fedora
on a w500 with AMD gaphics, so I suspect it's a GPM issue.

I can confirm running that command makes the external monitor sleep.

Given Alex is seeing the problem on a Thinkpad with a discrete AMD
display, he is probably correct -- this bug probably needs to be
assigned to another package, perhaps Gnome Power Manager.

[Bug 711093] [NEW] [Natty, Maverick, Lucid] External monitor connected w/ Display Port power management not working when laptop lid closed

2011-01-31 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When an external monitor is connected to my Thinkpad T400s using the
Display Port connection, the monitor never goes into an energy saving
state despite the Gnome power saving settings being enabled. Gnome
screen saver activates, but this does not conserve energy of course.

This bug occurs only when the laptop lid is closed. The bug does not
occur when the laptop lid is open.

I have seen this problem with Lucid, Maverick and now the latest daily
build of Natty.

ubuntu-bug xorg crashed, so I don't know if you received the extra
information you need or not. I will include some information here that

[Bug 664920] [NEW] 100% CPU usage when calling a child process from a python script

2010-10-21 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

When creating a child process from a python script that uses pygtk 2.21,
such subprocess.check_call(), 100% of the CPU is used (technically,
100% of the core the python interpreter is using).

If the creation of the child processes are removed, the script runs as
expected.

According to user exarkun on the #python IRC channel, the problem may be
manifesting when the child process exits. It may be related to a bug
that was fixed in 9.10, but broken in 9.04. If that is the case, this is
the relevant bug report:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481569

The code in which I noticed this problem is in the videometadata.py

[Bug 337604] Re: laptop volume control badly calibrated

2010-03-13 Thread Damon Lynch
Hi Jeremy,

I tested it with the very latest lucid packages. I tried the command
apport-collect 337604 , but I got a traceback (pasted below at the end).

Lucid would not boot with the current kernel from the PPA.

As for the bug itself, it seems to be fixed. Controlling the volume to
go up or down using the keys now works as expected. Mute and unmute also
works. I think the bug can be marked as fixed.

[Bug 334657] Re: Subpixel/Lcd mode with VRGB/VBGR makes qt4 applications on Jaunty unreadable

2009-04-22 Thread Damon Lynch
I have always had Subpixel ordering set to RGB, in conjunction with
full subpixel LCD smoothing. I have very consistently seen the bug occur
in QT based applications. It happens seemingly randomly, however: the
fonts will be fine one minute, then scrambled the next. I always run a
Gnome desktop.

[Bug 334863] Re: [jaunty] notification are partially off-screen on res change

2009-03-28 Thread Damon Lynch
My laptop screen native resolution is 1280x800. It is possible to have
the notifications disappear off the screen altogether when the
resolution is set to 800x600. They are partly visible when the
resolution is 1024x768.

[Bug 175986] Re: if compiz is enabled, using mouse wheel over desktop switches desktops

2009-03-03 Thread Damon Lynch
I dont' know if this bug is still present in jaunty or not (my touchpad
scrollwheel is not working!), but I agree it is an extremely annoying
bug and I very much hope it can be fixed for jaunty.

[Bug 320632] Re: tap-to-click and edge-scrolling broken in Jaunty

Hardware: ALPS GlidePoint.

Alberto Milone's PPA package solved the bug where edge scrolling did not
work. It now works just fine. Thanks.

[Bug 337604] [NEW] laptop volume control badly calibrated

2009-03-03 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

The volume control is far too sensitive. Only a small decrease in volume
using the volume control or the laptop's function keys means a dramatic
increase in the actual volume changed. For example, to go from very loud
to almost total silence, move the volume control from full to half way
down. This is only four key presses using the function keys. This bug
has existed for a while. 8.10 also has the problem. It used to work ok
in previous Ubuntu versions (perhaps 8.04 or 7.10).

This laptop is a Sony VAIO:

[Bug 308370] Re: Rythmbox freezes very often with Accessibility support enabled when using multimedia keys

It still exists in jaunty. I am on a Sony VAIO and see the same issue.
The workaround for turning off accessibility worked.

[Bug 139700] Re: dpi setting incorrect

2007-09-16 Thread Damon Lynch
I was running the FOSS Nvidia driver when I first saw this bug.
Switching to the the binary non-free driver produces different results,
with the same DisplaySize results in much smaller fonts.

WIth either the non free or the free driver, until the bug is fixed the
DisplaySize option is vital to be able to have readable fonts.

[Bug 139700] Re: dpi setting incorrect

2007-09-16 Thread Damon Lynch
A cause of the problem appears to be that the upgrade process related in
this line in the xorg.conf file:

Virtual 19201440

Commenting this out resulted in fonts which are close to normal, and
xdpyinfo now reports a resolution of 101x101 dots per inch.

I don't know enough about xorg configuration to know where the fault
lies.

[Bug 139748] poor handling of eSATA drives

2007-09-15 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Using both Gutsy and Feisty, When an eSATA drive is connected to the
system, in my case via an expresscard adapter, it is not handled in the
same manner as a Firewire or USB drive.

Scenario 1: where drive is connected before the machine is powered on

1. It is not mounted automatically. The user must go to the Computer
and click on the drive in order to mount it. This is inconsistent
behavior compared to Firewire or USB drives.

2. If the drive is FAT32, the user is asked to enter a password for
security reasons. If the drive is ext3, no password is required (I have
not tested an eSATA ext3 drive with Gutsy since I do not have one
available, but I did observe this with Feisty).

All connected eSATA drives should be mounted automatically at boot time.

Scenario 2 relates to plugging / unplugging a drive when the machine is
already booted. I think that should be a separate bug report.

[Bug 139700] dpi setting incorrect

2007-09-14 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On my Sony VGN SZ381P, with a 13.3 screen 1280x800 native resolution,
when upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy the fonts became incredibly small.

Setting a sensible value for DisplaySize in xorg.conf resolved the
problem.
