[Bug 1690541] Re: Scrolled windows in update-manager are too small to read

2018-03-17 Thread Dan Allen
The details section on my system is a black text based panel that was
originally just a single line (as shown in comment #1). This is now
fixed and fills the window correctly so all the text can be seen.

It doesn't look like the screen shot shown in comment #32. Perhaps this
is a different issue?

[Bug 674961] Re: It is not possible to unselect the documents folder for Ubuntu One synchronization.

2011-04-20 Thread Dan Allen
I'm experiencing the same problem. If I have an adhoc folder that has
previously been marked for synchronization, it can't be unselected (or
the UI doesn't reflect the state change).

1. Observe that the folder has the Ubuntu One emblem
2. Right-click on folder and select Ubuntu One Stop Synchronizing This Folder
3. Observe that the folder still has the Ubunut One emblem
4. Right-click on folder and observe that Ubunut One Stop Synchronizing This
Folder is still an option

If I restart my computer (or logout and login again), then the emblem
goes away and the folder appears to stop synchronizing. So perhaps the
UI just isn't getting updated.

[Bug 625194] Re: Enhancement : graphical interface for ignore list

2011-04-20 Thread Dan Allen
Having a UI is very important for two reasons:

1. To communicate to the user that files will be ignored (with some indication
as to which ones)
2. Allow the user to configure the ignored files

I got into trouble using Ubuntu One to sync by Pidgin configuration and
logs directory (.purple). By excluding files that begin with #, non of
the IRC channel logs get backed up (since IRC channels begin with #).

It would be nice to be able to override the ignore list on a per-path
basis. That way I could make an exception for the .purple directory, for
instance.

[Bug 762855] Re: [sandybridge-m-gt2+] Display on external monitor (vga) is black on 13 MacBook Pro 8, 1 (x86_64)

2011-04-20 Thread Dan Allen
Yes! It works! I can't even tell you how relieved I feel without
sounding like a lunatic.

Here are the details of the experience:

1. added the ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa repository to apt-get
2. installed linux-generic and linux-generic-headers version 2.6.39-0.4~20110419
3. logged in using the no effects profile
4. plugged in Mitsubishi DiamondPoint NX86LCD
5. immediately it extended the screen, with the monitor as the overflow desktop
6. successfully moved a window into that part of the desktop
7. selected mirror screens
8. at first, monitor went black
9. changed to a lower resolution, apply, then back to highest resolution, then
apply
10. same image in both monitors (I suspect the fiddling was probably me not
being patient enough)
11. logout out and tried the same thing in unity
12. unity flakes out a bit while the image is getting setup in the external
monitor and even crashed, but then after a few seconds, it all settled out and
I could use both monitors, mirror and non-mirror
13. repeated the same test on a Samsung SyncMaster 2333HD
14. the display synced much quicker in both cases
15. unity was still crashing during the switch, but eventually worked itself
out...I suspect that problem has to do with unity

The end result is, the new kernel works. The transitions could be
smoother, but that could be dependent on the monitor and how it responds
to the input signal. But I'm just speculating.

Thanks again!

2011-04-20 Thread Dan Allen
For the record, I tried out the intel driver from the elderberry ppa
using the older kernel (the one from natty beta2) and it did not fix the
problem. I still got:

[ 63.990093] [drm:ironlake_crtc_disable] *ERROR* failed to disable transcoder
[ 164.540158] [drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train] *ERROR* failed to train DP,

[ 164.952644] [drm:intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch] *ERROR* too many retries, giving up

The xset trick didn't have any affect either.

So only the newer kernel resolves the issue. And I'm so happy about that
:)

2011-04-20 Thread Dan Allen
I gave it a shot, but I must admit I'm a bit lost since I'm straddling
between two kernel versions 2.6.38 and 2.6.39. I'm not quite sure where
to go. I arrived at git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-oneiric.git.

I installed various kernel builds from the 2.6.39 line. Here are my
results:

v2.6.39-rc1-natty - broken
2011-04-08-natty - working (daily build from 2011-04-08)
v2.6.39-rc3-natty - working

I examined the commit messages. I'm going to take a wild guess, but it
looks like one of these:

7ccb4a5 drm/i915: Re-enable self-refresh
18b2190 drm/i915: allow 945 to control self refresh (CxSR) automatically
0de009c drm/i915/crt: Remove 0xa0 probe for VGA

Folks have been busy on i915 between Ubuntu-2.6.39-0.0 and
Ubuntu-2.6.39-0.2, which is where the fix seems to be. Hopefully that
helps.

[Bug 762855] [NEW] Display on external monitor (vga) is black on 13 MacBook Pro 8, 1

2011-04-16 Thread Dan Allen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The 13 MacBook Pro (8,1) has an integrated Intel 3000 video card. As of
Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 64bit+mac Nightly 2011.04.16, whenever I attempt to
connect an external display using the supplied VGA adapter, the external
display is properly detected by vendor, resolution and refresh rate.
However, the screen is black and it claims that there is no input
source. I can drag windows into that region, but the display is just not
showing anything.

You can see this behavior clearly by disabling compiz (Ubuntu classic,
no effects). When compiz is enabled, you get additional problems. As
soon as the display is recognized, the primary screen goes black. The
only way to restore the primary screen is to disconnect the adapter,
switch to the virtual terminal and restart gdm (sudo service gdm
restart). Clearly compiz is interfering with the monitor detection
process.

[Bug 675156] Re: Fan allways working when using xserver-xorg-ati

2011-01-04 Thread Dan Allen
In my case, the fan is revving in a regular pattern. About every five
seconds it sounds like it's speeding up, then slows back down a second
later. It's really quite annoying, not to mention what it is doing to
the battery life. I would actually rather that it just run at a constant
speed.

This seems to be related to compiz. When an effect is used the cycling
starts up. If I rest on a screen for a while it seems to stay more idle.

Actually, my problem is likely different than yours. Your issue is that
the radeon card is still active, even if you are not using the driver.

I switch off the graphics card I'm not using with a startup script:

# disable radeon card
echo DIGD /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

# disable intel card

[Bug 58179] Re: Doesn't autohide on context menu close

2011-01-01 Thread Dan Allen
I wonder if this could be solved in a more general way by introducing a
autohide timeout to gnome-panel. When you are using the panel, it's a
very active operation. So even if the mouse cursor ends up resting on
the panel when you return to using the application (such as typing in a
console or word document) chances are you want the panel to hide
(assuming you use this proposed setting).

In short, I think the panel should have a setting that makes it
aggressively close by having an inactivity timeout.

[Bug 695617] [NEW] offer two state toggle for sticky keys

2010-12-30 Thread Dan Allen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Sticky keys offer a simpler way to initiate multi-key shortcuts
involving modifiers. While handicapped users can certainly benefit, I
believe sticky keys can be very powerful and useful for any user. It's
common sense. It requires much less dexterity to enter three keys in
sequence than trying to press them down all at once.

However, the use of sticky keys can quickly become an annoyance when
modifier keys are left in their sticky state. This happens to me all the
time. I press down the modifier, but then perhaps I decide I don't need
it. But you have to tend to it or else your next key or mouse button
press is going to be combined with the active modifier. You deactive the
key by pressing it again and again (or hitting Esc).

What keeps biting me is the necessity to press the active modifier key
twice rather than just once.

You have to click the activate modifier twice to cycle through the
locked sticky state, then on to the inactive state. In short, there are
three states, instead of the desired two states:

- inactive
- active (transient)
- locked

I'm *constantly* banging on the keys to tare them (set them all
inactive). I almost never want to use the locked state and cycling
through it is a major annoyance. I'd like to be able to eliminate that
state as an option.

It should be noted that the sticky keys feature in KDE only has two
states: inactive and active. There is no locked state. I think Gnome
should at least accommodate that use case.

[Bug 695617] Re: offer two state toggle for sticky keys

2010-12-30 Thread Dan Allen
Ubuntu QA is working on addressing a similar issue of the stick keys
getting left in an active or locked state.

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/26323

I think this is a multi-faceted issue (which means the problem presents
itself in different ways). I'll provide some insight into the possible
solutions:

timeout - most of the time, when you are issuing a key binding sequence
w/ sticky keys, its going to happen pretty quickly. So a timeout of a
few seconds would alleviate a lot of lingering sticky keys problems

two state toggle - this just makes it less steps to get a modifier back
in the inactive state

clear - sometimes you just need to reset all the sticky keys rather than
try to figure out which keys need to be hit to switch them to inactive.
A clear key binding or button would be very helpful in these cases.

I also want to mention my use case, so that it's clear how important
this feature is for users and especially developers. If I want to open a
Java file in Eclipse, the key combination is:

CtrlShiftt

Trying to press those three characters all at once is a challenge, like
playing twister with your fingers. It's so much easier to type one key
at a time in a sort of bounce motion:

Ctrl
Shift
t

What we are trying to address in this bug is when you press

Ctrl

Then decide to take a different course. You have to go back and address
the active sticky state of Ctrl before you do anything else.
Currently, I have to bang out:

Ctrl
Ctrl

I'd like to limit this to just one, or let it timeout after a few
seconds.

[Bug 502535] [NEW] gnome-search-tool should allow queries to be saved

2010-01-02 Thread Dan Allen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Ubuntu release: Karmic (9.10)
Package: gnome-utils 2.28.1-0ubuntu1

The gnome-search-tool is a great utility to give the power of
commandline searching to non-techie users. However, what you typically
want to give them is not just the utility, but the search itself.
Therefore, the gnome-search-tool should allow a search query to be saved
and assigned an alias. That way, the end user can just click on the name
and get the results they need without having to construct the search
from scratch every time.

As it turns out, this tool already supports this feature, in a way. The
gnome-search-tool command provides commandline flags for every field in
the user interface. This allows me to create a .desktop file that calls
gnome-search-tool using my prepared query. So all the user interface
needs to do is offer a way to generate a .desktop file from the current
search and prompt the user for a name. The file can be saved to the
desktop and the search can be run by clicking (or double-clicking) on
it.

Here's an example .desktop file that searches for songs less than a
month old.

[Bug 278790] Re: Rhythmbox Coherence UPnP doesn't work.

2008-12-31 Thread Dan Allen
I have a LaCie Ethernet Disk with Media Server and was able to get the
uPnP rhythmbox plugin to work and see the share on Ubuntu Intrepid by
following the steps below.

sudo apt-get install python-coherence
sudo apt-get install python-setuptools
mkdir -p ~/tmp/build
cd ~/tmp/build
svn co https://coherence.beebits.net/svn/tags/Coherence-0.6.0 Coherence
cd Coherence
sudo python setup.py install
cd /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/upnp_coherence
sudo rm -f *.py*

[Bug 278790] Re: Rhythmbox Coherence UPnP doesn't work.

2008-12-31 Thread Dan Allen
The only problem with accessing the LaCie Ethernet Disk is that the same
song shows up many times. Likely this is a bug in the media server, not
in Coherence since a second rhythmbox share works normally.

The second to last comment wrapped, leading you to believe that you have
to execute the rhythmbox command twice. Read it as quit rhythmbox. You
only need to run rhythmbox once with sudo and then you can just run it
as a normal user.

[Bug 135093] Re: xserver-xorg-video-intel does not work with 845G

2008-03-14 Thread Dan Allen
I can confirm that the display now renders properly in Hardy.

Sorry for the delay...I finally got my hands on the computer again and
was able to test it out.

The support for older graphics cards has an important impact on adoption
since those trying out Ubuntu tend to try it out first on an old
computer just lying around. When it doesn't work then, they lost faith
in it...especially since display issues prevent them from even getting
to the desktop.

We should feel good about the fact that Hardy will impress.

[Bug 113679] Re: xorg freezes when running openoffice

2007-12-06 Thread Dan Allen
I don't want to add insult to injury, but Tom's comment perfectly
describes the severity of this problem (even if this bug is fixed, it
could be something to learn from). To have the computer freeze is more
than just an inconvenience. It is a deal-breaker. I am writing a book
right now and I am on a very tight deadline. It never fails that when I
have several chapters open and my flow going, OpenOffice.org (and
sometimes just X in general) just locks the whole X session. It's 30
minutes to an hour before I am back to where I was mentally. I was going
to use VMWare to write, but I like the idea of using a second X session
as well.

[Bug 164902] cannot run LiveCD on Inspiron 1100 (intel 845GL)

2007-11-24 Thread Dan Allen
Public bug reported:

I attempted to boot the Gusty LiveCD on a Dell Inspiron 1100 with an
integrated intel 845GL graphics card, only to get vertical blue lines
covering the screen. A message appeared saying that it X is running on
low-graphics mode and I have a choice whether to configure it, quit, or
continue. When I did configure, I was able to select the i810 intel
graphics driver, but pressing OK after that yielded a black screen (of
death).

I then attempted to boot the Feisty LiveCD on the same computer, and I
everything worked as expected, except the screen was only 640x480 and
was not using the entire screen real-estate (it was telescoped).

My conclusion is that whatever upgrade of the i180 driver that
occurred in Gusty attempted to fix the low-resolution, telescoping
problem from Feisty, but ended up making the system unusable. This
computer is not mine (its my mother's), so unfortunately I cannot sit
there an fiddle with it for days at a time. If I cannot pop the CD in
and get a desktop, I get sorry, perhaps next time.

[Bug 113679] Re: xorg freezes when running openoffice

2007-09-11 Thread Dan Allen
Oh, I can definitely still reproduce it. Working around it has just been
a joy (sarcasm). I have become extremely adept at using the file menu
from the keyboard. In fact, now I use the keyboard for all programs to
access the file menu.

Dealing with this bug has been especially fun since I am using
OpenOffice.org to write a book. I think I use openoffice more than I use
Firefox now. That one time I slip up and press the File menu with the
mouse, boom! My most recent work is lost (unless openoffice.org can
recover successfully). Another reason I hit Ctrl+S about every other
word.

[Bug 126996] Clicking on File menu completely freezes X.org

2007-07-19 Thread Dan Allen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org2

When I click on File, the entire system just locks up. The mouse won't
move, the keyboard is unresponsive, and the only way to do anything is
to kill X.org by shelling in from another computer. It appears as though
X grabs the mouse and never lets go. I have seen other people report
this issue on the debian mailinglist, but it is just too critical not to
report in launchpad as well.

I can reproduce the bug pretty consistently. Open up a bunch of
documents in openoffice and leave it running for a while (maybe
overnight). Openoffice gets really slow. Close openoffice. Next, open a
document by clicking on it in the file browser (not necessary, but that
is just how I do it). The next time you touch the File menu, it just
ices X. Goodnight, say goodbye to whatever you didn't have saved
because it is gone forever.

This bug is catastrophic. I don't know how else to put it. For a system
to flat out freeze is just the worst possible bug.

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.3

2007-07-09 Thread Dan Allen
Why can't we get it into Fiesty? The way I see it, Eclipse is a
completely external package, not affecting the distro in any way.
People want to get the latest version of Eclipse without having to
upgrade to a new distribution. It is very important for developers.
Eclipse releases are backwards compatible, so it isn't like you have to
go get all new plugins.

[Bug 50209] Re: new layout for logout-dialog

2006-12-01 Thread Dan Allen
It may also be worth considering the points that Joel Spolsky raises in
his Joel on Software entry entitied Choices = Headaches

http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2006/11/21.html

The question asked is why the user needs so many options. Since Ubuntu
is all about making Linux easy and fun, perhaps it is a good candidate
distribution to implement such a change. I don't think it is necessary
to reduce it down to a single logout option, but the last three that he
mentions seems to be a nice balance. Certainly the computer could
hibernate from sleep mode after some time has past by.

[Bug 49789] Re: Clicking on Codes of Conduct link in Launchpad crashes X

I am also using the nvidia driver and viewing a signed code of conduct
page causes X to restart immediately. I experience the same behavior in
both Firefox and Epiphany (seems to be generally related to gecko). I
do not have the same problem when I visit the page using Opera.

[Bug 50031] Re: [regression] Suspend [to-RAM and to-disk] is broken in 2.6.15-25.43

2006-06-19 Thread Dan Allen
I can confirm that the update to acpi-support 0.85 also solved my
problem.

IBM Thinkpad T43, ATI X300 (M300), fglrx driver

I noticed after the recent update to the kernel 2.6.15-25-686 that
suspend wasn't working (and almost burnt my hand taking my laptop out of
its bag), and sure enough, there was an update waiting for me when I
turned it out.

Great job folks!
