[Bug 755357] Re: dual monitor panel should show window details when not focused
For me the inconsistency is this: that maximised and unfocussed windows at the fore of a monitor are determined to 'own' the panel, in that clicking on the panel focuses it, but maximised and unfocussed windows that aren't at the fore of a monitor do not own the panel and therefore do not have any kind of window bar that can be clicked to grab focus. In fact if focus is on a different monitor, no window owns the panel on this one: it's just dead space! One argument is that the window at the fore of any monitor should be the one associated with the panel, as it is when it has focus. The other argument is that the maximised window is without a window bar that can be used to grab focus without clicking any window content. From either point of view the panel should not be wasted space: clicking it should focus one of these two windows, with my preference being the maximised window (I think it's more intuitive and practical). The initial complaint, however, was that the title is not shown for the unfocussed window. I think the counter to this argument initially has a stronger case, i.e. that focus needs to be indicated, and that is currently done by either displaying or hiding the window title. The intuitive way to distinguish, however, is simply the same way as is used for unmaximised windows: the style of the title text (e.g. greyed for unfocussed). The trouble here is that, alongside my previous suggestion regarding the function of clicking the panel, changing focus between monitors would result in the panel on the monitor with the rearward maximised window switching title between the foremost and maximised window. [Bug 816995] [NEW] Drag down from panel to restore does not instantly lock window position relative to mouse cursor.
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 11.04, Unity 3.8.16-0ubuntu1~natty1. A nice feature of unity when using two monitors with TwinView is the ability to pull down a maximised window (restore) from one screen and drag it to the top of the other to maximise it there. This feels very natural and lends itself to a swift movement. It seems that the intention for a drag down is that the restored window be positioned such that the mouse cursor is at the top and middle of the window's title bar, as is the case it the action is performed very slowly. When the action is performed swiftly, there is an offset from this position, as if some initial part of the mouse displacement is excluded. This means the mouse cursor ends up lower down in the window, and for a swift manouevre from the left screen to the right for example, the window also ends up behind its intended position (i.e. centred left of the mouse cursor). While this does not prevent the user from maximising the window on another screen (and so does not constitute of a loss of functionality), it is a real detriment to the ergonomics of the operation, which I would say ranks it slightly above a purely cosmetic bug. ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/816995 Title: Drag down from panel to restore does not instantly lock window position relative to mouse cursor. [Bug 611336] Re: network-idle icon links to (is the same as) network-transmit-receive.
Having tested this at home, I can see that much of my last comment is incorrect (sorry about that). The wireless strength icon is in fact a supplement to the status icon, so the signal strength icons should certainly stay as they are. As an aside:In fact there are issues with the netstatus applet's intention for these icons: it seems it should be rotated for vertical panels, which is useful for thin signal icons (such is in the gnome theme), but not square ones like those used in the main Ubuntu themes. This doesn't appear to work at the moment (no signal is shown on a vertical panel I created). There is also an issue with having no dedicated 'zero signal' icon for the applet, and the disparity between 'link quality'/'signal strength' calculations for network manager and netstatus applet. All in all, it's pretty messy! I also notice that the mono icon themes use up and down arrows for the link status (possibly the most obvious choice). While this bug also affects those themes, fully fading this idle icon should be acceptable because the sense is that the data stream is inactive, rather than the device/connection. However, the disconnected icon in those themes uses the wireless pictograph, which doesn't make sense for wired network users, and in Humanity it's the wired pictograph that is used, which isn't ideal for predominantly wireless users (though at least the idiom of 'being unplugged' carries some weight). The link status arrows could be altered to create a disconnected icon by adding a cross for example, but the set of icons I've proposed (excluding those for wireless signal strength) bypasses both the disconnected problem, and the idle problem. -- network-idle icon links to (is the same as) network-transmit-receive. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/611336 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 611336] Re: network-idle icon links to (is the same as) network-transmit-receive.
OK, one problem here is that the applet icon does different jobs for wired and wireless connections. In my opinion, the netstatus icon should show transmit-receive information, whichever network type is being monitored: - That is what people (certainly myself) expect from it (MS Windows does this for example). - Signal strength information is provided by the network manager icon that is [always?] displayed in the notification area, and so should not be required from the netstatus applet. I believe themes that do not provide gnome-netstatus signal strength icons (0-24, 25-49, etc.) invoke this behaviour, since this is what occurs on my home computer using wireless, and not using the humanity theme (these icons default to those in the gnome directory). Perhaps the current behaviour should be a selectable option if anyone thinks there is a demand for it. Since wired and wireless networks are differentiated in the network manager icon scheme, I suggest that the netstatus icon should symbolise a generic network, neither wired nor wireless, and can therefore be more consistent. I've created a sample set of netstatus icons (including those for signal strength) in this spirit, which I will attach along with a preview image. Of course it's the principle I would like to see adopted, not necessarily these specific icons. Do let me know what the official thoughts are on this. Cheers. P.S. The signal strength icons will particularly indistinct on a standard panel due to a current bug which scales the icon by two pixels unnecessarily, resulting in rather blurry icons. [Bug 611336] Re: network-idle icon links to (is the same as) network-transmit-receive.
The Gnome NetStatus Applet uses these icons to show if data is being sent or received. The Gnome Network Monitor does not use this idle icon to show the wired connection status (it's distinct from 'networkwired.png'), which I think is your concern. If the idle icon is the same as the transmit-receive icon, the applet is not providing the desired information (is the network idling or is it active?). Other standard themes distinguish these two icons, usually by indicating activity in either direction (transmit or receive) with a distinct 'on' symbol, such as light on a monitor, c.f. the human icon theme, where the network-wired icon is used rather than network-idle: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/maverick/human-icon- theme/maverick/download/head%3A/networkwired.png-20100331141318-n6ylp4tkw1yysi69-18 /network-wired.png http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/maverick/human-icon- theme/maverick/download/head%3A/networktransmitrecei-20091205110421-6zee3ly4x0w9rb46-357 /network-transmit-receive.png The Humanity theme's icons for 'transmit only' or 'receive only' instead designate the absence of signal in the opposing direction by cutting the alpha of that part of the symbol, and this should hold true for the idle icon (as in my patch). The concern that this suggests a disabled state is mitigated by it's use in the netstatus applet, and typically frequent switches between the idle and active states. The alternative for this theme is to have fully opaque components represent inactivity, and use a colour (or some other symbol change) to denote activity, but this is not particularly desirable. -- network-idle icon links to (is the same as) network-transmit-receive. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/611336 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 282806] Re: 2 screens - nautilus shown on the wrong screen when opened via the panel
So something's up with the how (gnome-panel/menu.c) menuitem_to_screen (or one of it's called functions) works, or how the menu items are generated, perhaps with the traceability of the menu item to its panel and therefore screen. See (panel-menu-items.c) panel_menu_item_activate_desktop_file: panel_launch_desktop_file (path, NULL, menuitem_to_screen (menuitem), error); as compared to a working function like: panel_launch_desktop_file (alacarte.desktop, alacarte, screen, error); where screen is set using gtk_widget_get_screen(GTK_WIDGET (button)); I don't think it's anything to do with having multiple menu bars as removing the first screen's menu bar does not affect the issue. I'm afraid I can't really go any further than this as it involves a bit too much work for me as a simple user, but I'm guessing this would require only a simple fix. -- 2 screens - nautilus shown on the wrong screen when opened via the panel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282806 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 242149] Re: Clicking 'Up' or 'Back' whilst generating thumbnails does not change location URL
I don't think a screenshot will explain it better, but I'll have a go at being clearer with my description. Say I'm in /home/dan/Images/ and I click into the subfolder 'Wallpapers'. The location bar obviously reads /home/dan/Images/Wallpapers and I can see my wallpaper images. If I let the thumbnails generate to completion, then click 'Up' or 'Back' then I go back to Images, the location bar reads /home/dan/Images/, and everything is back to how it was before I entered 'Wallpapers'. Fine. Say again I'm in /home/dan/Images/ and I click into the subfolder 'Wallpapers'. If however I click 'Up' or 'Back' before the thumbnails finish generating, the nautilus content window goes back to displaying the list of files/folders in /home/dan/Images/, but the location bar still reads /home/dan/Images/Wallpapers. Performing actions from here behaves as if I were in /home/dan/Images/Wallpapers, such that if I click 'Up', everything is restored to /home/dan/Images/, or if I click on the subfolder 'Wallpapers', nothing happens because there is no folder /home/dan/Images/Wallpapers/Wallpapers. To replicate you'll obviously need a folder with a few images, but it should be very simple to do, unless there is something specific about my system that's causing the issue (I certainly can't think of anything that could). -- Clicking 'Up' or 'Back' whilst generating thumbnails does not change location URL https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242149 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 242149] Re: Clicking 'Up' or 'Back' whilst generating thumbnails does not change location URL
The bug is common to using either the text location bar or the button location bar - I was describing the problem with the standard URL location bar. The display of a button for subfolder just exited is expected behaviour, but the location is indicated by a depressed button, which under normal circumstances moves to the parent folder upon exit. The problem occurs after entering the subfolder either with a double- click or right-clicking the folder and selecting 'Open'. Again, the behaviour is exactly as expected when the thumbnails are allowed to finish loading. If they do not, the 'Up'/'Back' button serve only to update the main contents window, not the functional location of the nautilus window. -- Clicking 'Up' or 'Back' whilst generating thumbnails does not change location URL https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242149 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 226164] [NEW] Animated skydome responds as though anchored to viewport 1
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz I originally raised this issue on the 5th of November 2007 and it was reported here: http://bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=606 Nothing has since been done, which is a shame as it should be a very simple fix (it worked fine in Beryl). As described in this thread: http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=5331 When the animated skydome is enabled (cube plugin) and the cube is being rotated with the mouse, the skydome only responds appropriately to up and down movements when viewport 1 is facing the screen. The easiest way to demonstrate this is by choosing an image that doesn't wrap seamlessly as the skydome background. Rotate the cube to viewport 1, then grab the cube with the mouse. When the mouse is moved up and down, you'll notice that the skydome tilts slightly downward and upward, respectively. Now rotate the cube to viewport 4, then grab the cube with the mouse. When the mouse is moved up and down, the skydome now tilts _right_ and _left_, respectively, instead of downward or upward. In other words, it's tilting in the directions that would be perceived as downward or upward from viewport 1's perspective. I also tested with Beryl SVN 4469, and the skydome animation looked correct from the perspective of whichever viewport was currently facing the screen. Package: compiz plugins.
