[Bug 1528300] Re: Stuck on login screen after updating to 3.19.0-42
Ok, I updated the BIOS to F9 and confirmed with the commands above: F9 03/18/2014 Now nothing other than windows worked. I eventually figured out the BIOS updates reset the BIOS settings, which included enabling the Intel HD Graphics on the processor - which seems to confuse the hell out of ubuntu. After disabling that and playing with the display drivers I'm able to boot with the 42 kernel now. For some reason only the nouveau driver works, using the nvidia driver will give the initial symptoms still: instead of booting to desktop, you get the login screen, but it's not possible to login with any account, you just get returned to the login screen - probably a failure of the desktop system to start. The nouveau driver used to (with kernel 41) cause me issues where it would boot to a black screen roughly 3/4 times. Persistently rebooting would eventually work. I hope that is not still the case, but it's too early to say. I've disabled all updates and I'm going to try to limp along until the next time I upgrade my OS, I'll give a debian a try this time, maybe it will be more stable. [Bug 1528300] Re: Stuck on login screen after updating to 3.19.0-42
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Entering the correct password does not login (entering bad password does give a bad password error, this is distinct), trying to start a guest session also fails. Rebooting and choosing the previous 3.19.0-41 kernel works fine. This bug report is sent after booting from *-41. I have the proprietary Nvidia drivers installed, the recommended version 352.63 from the additional drivers tab. The nouveau drivers do not work with my Nvidia 970 system, they cause me to sometimes get a black screen instead of booting into the OS, also with the install disk, and even with other linux distros. The proprietary drivers fix that issue for me, regardless of distro. I'll keep the "buggy" kernel version around for now in case I can help debug this issue. Re: [Bug 992968] Re: Large file transfer to Sandisk Cruzer 8GB USB hangs for a long time
That's a good point. I tested it, and that is true. Sync completes at the same time as the copy operation. The progress bar tracks the file cache, not the file on the usb device. That seems somewhat misleading, but reasonable enough behavior. However, the real question then becomes why am I getting less than 2mb/s with the usb drive on linux (usb 1.0 speeds) but normal usb 2.0 speeds on windows with the same device? I can't imagine a driver that poorly written as to introduce an order of magnitude overhead to an IO operation, so I think surely it must be mistakenly treating it as a usb 1.0 device? I checked dmesg but found nothing related at the tail of the log files after plugging in the usb device. I did find this in the sys log, I'm including it in case it's helpful. [Bug 992968] [NEW] Large file transfer to Sandisk Cruzer 8GB USB hangs for a long time
Public bug reported: This is only for large files (e.g. movie sized 700-4000 MB) The file transfer goes quickly (judging by the progress bar) and then hangs a couple MB short of completed. While it's seemingly stuck on the last few MB I opened a terminal and confirmed that the files are completely transferred and I can even md5sum them (which takes seconds) and compare that to the original to prove that they are bit for bit copied correctly. However the nautilus progress window stays open with a hung progress bar for several minutes when it's clearly finished. I've observed it to take as long as 20 minutes in this stage (it will eventually "complete".) The problem does not happen with other USB storage devices on this computer (using the same USB port.) Initially I thought this was a nautilus issue, but it hangs using cp from the terminal (and again I can confirm that the file is completely transferred with md5sum.) [Bug 983581] Re: null reference error at shutdown/logoff
Ok I downloaded and installed the appropriate driver from AMD: md5: 7c7b82f0d87a7ce9ee816b7d77212faa amd-driver-installer-12-3-x86.x86_64.run sha1: f62146ed5653ce81dca578e0252c7f32d55627be amd-driver-installer-12-3-x86.x86_64.run I've since discovered that this is not the recommended way to do things on ubuntu, so acting on your advice I removed this with the uninstall shell script in the /usr/share/ati folder. I then tried to install the update fglrx package from jockey. This failed, log attached in next comment (it will be the first of two installs in that log file.) I then just on a whim tried the regular non-update fglrx from the jockey UI. It worked. I rebooted. No error. I changed to dual displays again, rebooted a few more times, still no error. So from my point of view this is resolved. Why it got messed up when installing from the amd installer, I have no idea, or why the update driver couldn't be installed from jockey I don't know.
