[Bug 1817234] Re: Bug in "python3-ebooklib" that was fixed upstream years ago but package is outdated

2019-10-15 Thread Daniel James
Hi Raúl, I'm not an Ubuntu developer so I'm not replying on behalf of
Ubuntu, just myself. If you would like to see this package updated in
Ubuntu, the best way to do that is to report it to Debian so that a new
maintainer can be found. As Python 2 is going away, the package will be
Python 3 only in future.

forward this bug to Debian and I will help get it updated there.

[Bug 1052423] Re: Please sync with Debian

2015-03-17 Thread Daniel James
Hi, in my opinion this bug should not have been marked as 'Fix
Released'. The Ubuntu package of zend has fallen three years behind
Debian's version and has not had a bugfix upload in more than a year.

The version in Ubuntu vivid is 1.11.11 which was released by upstream in
September 2011.

Debian jessie and sid have 1.12.9 which was released by upstream in
September 2014.

Debian experimental has 1.12.11 which was released by upstream in
February 2015.

The case in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zendframework/+bug/580507 for
a separate package may have been valid in 2010 but is not so apparent
now.

I would suggest that Ubuntu follows the Debian package, and if any users
depend on experimental features not included in the Debian package, file
a bug. If an addon feature hasn't been merged into the main zend release
after three years, it is unlikely to be supported upstream.

[Bug 609106] [NEW] pbuilderrc manpage doesn't mention that quotes are needed around multiple components

2010-07-23 Thread Daniel James
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pbuilder

When using pbuilder with cowbuilder, it's necessary for cowdancer to be
downloaded during the step:

sudo cowbuilder --create

Because cowdancer is in universe, this means adding an extra component
to your /etc/pbuilder/pbuilderrc file. The manpage pbuilderrc(5) states:

   COMPONENTS=main
Specify the default distribution components to use. This
option is space-delimited. This
option only affects when doing pbuilder create or when
--override-config is specified for
  pbuilder update option.

However, using the line:

   COMPONENTS=main universe

will fail with a message that the universe command cannot be found -
because this value is space-delimited, it is interpreted as two separate
commands. The man page should be changed to show the value in quotes:

   COMPONENTS="main"

[Bug 398590] Re: When I open it, it shows an error message.

2010-02-04 Thread Daniel James
There appears to be a problem with support for libtool being stripped in
recent libjack-dev packages from Debian/Ubuntu (after 0.116):

http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/j/jack-audio-connection-
kit/jack-audio-connection-
kit_0.118+svn3796-2/changelog#versionversion0.116.1-3

If you installed jack2 or built jack2 from svn there may be a different
bug as well, to do with jack2 not providing /usr/lib/libjack.la
upstream, which is hinted at here:

[Bug 331345] Re: avidemux, there are no keyframes during recoding a video

2009-07-24 Thread Daniel James
I duplicated this today, encoding an MPEG-4 file with x264 resulted in a
warning from MPlayer:

warning: first frame is no keyframe

This was after carefully using the key frame seek buttons in avidemux to
find key frames to cut on. The first few frames of the video are missing
colour information. vlc makes a better job of playing the video clip and
doesn't complain, but there is still some distortion visible in the
first few frames. So I do think this is a bug in avidemux or x264.

[Bug 334073] Re: barcode extension: crash for EAN13 (no 'computeChecksum')

2009-06-18 Thread Daniel James
Hi Aaron,

That change to EAN13.py fixes this bug for me, I can now make a barcode
with all 13 digits - thanks! Now all I have to do is get out a
magnifying glass and see if I can decode it :-)

This might seem like an edge case, but this EAN-13 support really is a
killer feature for designing book jackets and other kinds of product
packaging. Otherwise you have to leave a white rectangle and hope the
guy at the printers gets it right. You have to pay extra for them to
make you a barcode too.

Cheers!

[Bug 334073] Re: barcode extension: crash for EAN13 (no 'computeChecksum')

2009-06-17 Thread Daniel James
I reported the following to the inkscape-devel list:

I think I found the cause, a bug in the plugin. If you select Barcode
Type as EAN13 and enter 13 digits into the Barcode Data field, which is
correct according to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Article_Number

you get the error as shown in the Launchpad ticket. If you enter any
number of digits other than 12 or 13, it warns:

Can not encode '97819050823' into EAN13 Barcode, Size must be 12 numbers only
No barcode was generated

However if you enter the first 12 digits of an ISBN-13, Inkscape will
generate a bogus EAN-13 barcode, which will probably not scan in book
stores because it has the final checksum digit missing.

I think there's been a mix-up between 12 digit UPC barcodes and 13 digit
EAN-13 barcodes used for book ISBN's. Sorry if this is too obvious and
you knew about the problem already.

If anyone has a barcode scanner available, I would love to do some
quality control testing on this feature, because once it's printed on
the back of the book, it's too late to change :-)

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 251234 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251234

This bug is related to #251234 but is not an exact duplicate. This
particular bug #188529 can now be closed because in Intrepid and later,
when starting KToon the wizard does have working values pre-filled in
the form fields, and does start up.

(The tools are still missing, but that's the substance of #251234, which
is caused by Debian packaging policy of moving the .so files for the
tools into /usr/lib This is clearly not what the upstream developers
anticipated).

[Bug 335496] Re: Menus in Firefox and Thunderbird are dark in the New Wave theme

2009-04-26 Thread Daniel James
@Julius (and everyone who thinks this problem is in New Wave):

Isn't it obvious that the problem is that firefox (and OOo) treat the
menubar items as menu items?

The problem is when the menubar has a light background and the menu has
a dark background or vice versa. In this case, firefox and OOo put the
'menu style' text over whatever background is selected. These apps
completely ignore 'menubar style' text colours...

Now, Dust - doesn't have different menubar/menu colours... New Wave Dark
Menus also doesn't have a strong contrast between menubar and menu
background. The only way to 'fix' New Wave is to make it New Wave Dark
Menus. This bug should definitely be marked as 'Confirmed' for firefox.
It is a very long standing bug that was first made obvious by the many
'vista' styled themes a couple of years ago.

At least we can fix firefox with userchrome I suppose, OOo pisses me off
more.

Just to summarise: There is NO possible work around except to change the
background colour of the menubar or the menu so that they both work with
the same foreground colour. (As the talented author did for New Wave
Dark Menus).

[Bug 356785] [NEW] Panel crash when visiting http://blog.oup.com/2009/03/science-fiction/ in firefox

2009-04-06 Thread Daniel James
Public bug reported:

Intrepid, up to date firefox and gnome-panel. I'm using compiz.

When visiting http://blog.oup.com/2009/03/science-fiction/ in firefox my
gnome-panel crashes. It does not crash until I switch to the tab which
makes me think that it may be related to the page title being displayed
on the window list.

I started gnome-panel from gnome-terminal to see what sort of crash it
is, I get this:

dan...@silver:~$ gnome-panel

(gnome-panel:6969): Gdk-WARNING **:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.14.4/gdk/x11/gdkdrawable-x11.c:878 drawable is not a
pixmap or window

Note that the Gdk warning was already displayed before the page was
viewed and the panel crashed.

[Bug 338740] [NEW] Needs updating for Jack 2

2009-03-06 Thread Daniel James
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mx44

Hi, on starting the Hardy package of mx44 the GUI appears but I get no
sound output. In the terminal I see:

Jack_client_new: deprecated
Cannot connect to server socket error = No such file or directory

I am running Jack 1.8 (Jack 2 prerelease) so I think mx44 need updating
for Jack 2. I can't get any sound output direct to ALSA either. Good
looking synth though :-)

Cheers!

Hi Max, yeah I'm using Baptiste Mille-Mathias' PPA:

Make sure you install gnome-user-share as well. Make sure you delete the

of success using the packages from that repo with an n95.. Before it was
impossible to receive via obex.

[Bug 211252] Re: Cannot receive files using bluetooth

2008-12-16 Thread Daniel James
I think the problem is that the bug is classed as 'Low' priority. I am
using packages from someone's ppa that are working perfectly.

So far it appears that this bug isn't being fixed because of really
stupid reasons, ie: at the very beginning it wasn't being fixed because
that would require an upgrade to a later version of bluez and everyone
was scared that an upgrade would introduce more bugs.. meanwhile, a very
large portion of the population couldn't even send a file from their
phone to their laptop..

[Bug 290875] Re: No more UI to decide whether receiving file via bluetooth is permitted or not in Intrepid

2008-11-07 Thread Daniel James
I hate to think I 'know best' - but the upstream author is wrong. When
I'm browsing photos on my phone that I've taken and I want to send a
particular picture to the computer, the easiest way to do this is click
the little envelope and 'send to' 'silver-0'. Searching through a nasty
folder structure to find the name of a file similar to the file I'm
viewing is definitely more complicated in this case.

I really really *really* don't want to explain to my parents how to do
something like this either. Especially when I was able to demonstrate to
friends how easy it was to use linux with my phone a year ago.

Sorry to be a pain :-/

2008-11-03 Thread Daniel James
I can't agree more. I was very happy to recommend ubuntu for laptops as
stuff just worked. Now it seems that laptops are getting less and less
support under ubuntu. Bluetooth needs to be supported out of the box, a
universe package is not intuitive at all. The only way to find out what
you are supposed to do to enable bluetooth file reception is to get on
bugzilla. This would not work in my parent's case.

Ok excellent, that works fine with your package. I can finally receive
after about a year of broken obex!

I downgraded to the current package from the main repo, rebooted, and
was unable to receive files. Upgrading to your package again!

So: I can confirm that receiving files doesn't work with the package
currently in main, and that receiving with your package does work. I am
using a nokia N95.

Completely unrelated: why have they moved obex file reception into a
package from the universe repo? Aargh, this is getting worse and worse

[Bug 199094] Re: [Hardy] hdparm.conf settings are lost on suspend/resume

This is still happening for me in Hardy. This really should probably be
marked 'high' priority - similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hdparm/+bug/156893

This can lead to hdd damage and poor performance on laptops. Hdd damage
because of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-
support/+bug/59695 and poor performance because of hard drive cycles
slowing down IO. eg: vim would freeze for me for 5+ seconds on a write
waiting for the hard drive to spin back up,..

It may introduce other bugs if a later version of the software is

amount to one keyword.

Basically this problem occurs if MaximumServiceRecordCount field(in the

2008-06-24 Thread Daniel James
For the people who just commented on this bug - This bug has been fixed
upstream for over a month. The problem is we don't have an updated
package in the repos.

There are quite a few bugs at the moment that are fixed upstream but not
in the repos. I assume it is because the packagers are just too busy
with this being a lts release, but glaring bugs like this one need to be
fixed faster...

[Bug 144216] Re: Slow switching tab in firefox/opera when the desktop effects are enabled in Gutsy Gibbon

I've noticed that canvas is extremely slow under ff3 - but only when
using nvidia drivers. I also have a cheap onboard intel video card in
one of my pcs and it renders canvas extremely fast with ff3. There seems
to be an incompatibility between firefox 3 and nvidia drivers - I'm
assuming this is because of 'hardware acceleration'.

[Bug 225547] [NEW] desktop wall "viewport switcher preview" draws badly

2008-05-02 Thread Daniel James
Public bug reported:

The 'viewport switcher preview' that displays when changing viewports
does not draw correctly when there are three viewports.

I've also tried with 2, 4, and 5 viewports and it renders correctly.

The problem with the way it draws is that the third viewport's
'transparent' block is off by two pixels to the left. I've attached a
blown up image of the problem.

This is in a fresh install of hardy with the number of desktops set to 3
instead of 2.

I think this is related - sometimes If you open the popup and just leave
the popup open for a minute or so it will resize by itself.

[Bug 211252] Re: Cannot recieve files using bluetooth

2008-04-27 Thread Daniel James
Same problem here:

* Clean install of ubuntu 8.04
* Removed pairing from my phone - all nice and clean
* Added the pairing successfully
* I can connect to the phone from nautilus and browse/dl/etc
* I can sync my evolution contacts, etc with my phone using opensync/msynctool
* I CANNOT send using obex push from my phone to my computer

More information:

* I do *not* have gnome-bluetooth installed
* I am not running gnome-obex-server
* obex-data-server *is* running
* I have enabled 'receive files from remote devices' and saw the popup when I
enabled it.

My phone is a nokia n95. As far as I can tell, my computer is not
advertising that it is capable of any bluetooth services - it seems to
be working as a client only.

I'm more than happy to help debug if someone wants to give me commands
to type..

[Bug 102843] php4 feisty

2007-04-04 Thread Daniel James
Public bug reported:

php4 has been removed from feisty, however, web developers still develop
for php4.

The majority of hosting services only support php4. Not having access to
php4 makes feisty less useful as a web development environment.

Please reconsider and possibly add back to the repos.

[Bug 88776] gnome-terminal segfaults on --geometry

2007-02-28 Thread Daniel James
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

gnome-terminal will segfault if you start it with a --geometry string
that includes a width and height. Position does not affect it.

To reproduce:

gnome-terminal --geometry=80x25

This is version 2.17.92 from feisty.

[Bug 82335] Re: network-manager should not set offline mode when it manages no device

2007-02-25 Thread Daniel James
@Onkar,

Disabling network manager in your gnome session will not work as that is
just the 'notification area' for the network-manager service. To disable
network-manager, either uninstall it (which will break ubuntu-desktop
package) or do this:

Stop network manager

sudo /etc/dbus-1/event.d/26NetworkManagerDispatcher stop
sudo /etc/dbus-1/event.d/25NetworkManager stop

Create two files with only the word 'exit' in them. These files are:

/etc/default/NetworkManager
/etc/default/NetworkManagerDispatcher

Hope that helps..

[Bug 86419] NetworkManager does not recognise static links

2007-02-19 Thread Daniel James
Public bug reported:

This is in Feisty..

NetworkManager will only work with auto dhcp interfaces. This is a
problem when using the default install of feisty. I have a static wired
interface, however - NetworkManager tells me I am not connected (and
that it cannot find any devices). The problem with this is evolution
will start in 'offline' mode when I run the default gnome desktop of
feisty.

To get around this for the time being I have disabled NetworkManager (by
putting 'exit' into /etc/default/NetworkManager and
/etc/default/NetworkManagerDispatcher).

Are we able to get NetworkManager to at least recognise interfaces that
it chooses not to control?

Another side effect of this issue: If you choose to 'create static' (not
sure of exact text) in the context menu of the NetworkManager tray
applet and configure your interface, it will then say that you are not
connected because the modified interface is no longer recognised.

[Bug 41458] Re: No DVD icon in Places >> Computer and Desktop when mounted

2007-01-10 Thread Daniel James
Unfortunately, yes. Thanks for asking.

I have tried edgy on that machine and it's the same (well, actually
worse): The icon disappears AND it doesn't play the DVDs.

I have to admit it's a fairly old computer (1999 or 2000) that I'm going
to replace with a newer one soon. As it seems I'm the only one affected
by this bug I think we shouldn't waste too much time with it.

[Bug 67532] Re: udev-rule for PTP class detection broken

2006-12-03 Thread Daniel James
Thanks for the info Hubert.

I just updated my udev rules and removed the rule specific to my camera.
Then I added the INTERFACE rule was mentioned by Marcus. I restarted
udev and plugged in my camera, this was the result:

An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not claim the USB device'):
Could not claim interface 0 (Operation not permitted). Make sure no
other program or kernel module (such as sdc2xx, stv680, spca50x) is
using the device and you have read/write access to the device.

It appears that my camera is not using that interface...

Just for reference, I have a Kodak P850. This is how it identifies

I also needed to add rules to my udev rules.d. Note that I am running

a rule that just has the vendor id... There seem to be a lot of products
missing at the moment..
