[Bug 1241465] [NEW] do-release-upgrade fails when using update-alternatives to provide different versions of /usr/bin/python
Public bug reported: sudo do-release-upgrade fails to upgrade 13.04 to 13.10 when update-alternatives is used to maintain different versions of python e.g. sudo update-alternatives --list python /usr/bin/python2.7 /usr/bin/python3.3 The script complains that the symlink to /usr/bin/python is broken regardless of which version is being used to provide python a workaround is to remove the symbolic link `sudo rm /usr/bin/python` and creating it manually `sudo rm /usr/bin/python` `sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python2.7 /usr/bin/python` `sudo do-release-upgrade` Apparently using version 3.3 didn't work too well either. [Bug 1241465] Re: do-release-upgrade fails when using update-alternatives to provide different versions of /usr/bin/python
so, in /DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeController.py after line 381, inserting something like this would possibly patch this bug: while os.path.islink(fs_default_version) : fs_default_version = os.readlink(fs_default_version) It would be an endless loop if links are circular though. Adding a counter for a maximum depth is one way out... Another would be to add the visited links to a list and checking it to see if the current link is already in the list. If so. break and return an error of some sort. Testing the troubleshooting guide at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting i note that xev does not record a keypress for the hotkeys Fn+F8 Fn+F9. No xev keypress events are produced for some other keys too (switching off the touchpad, bluetooth, wlan, switching monitors) but their expected functions work nonetheless. /lib/udev/findkeyboards returns AT keyboard: input/event4 sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event4 causes a continuous stream of return to be sent to any selected window. The function keys relative to this bug report produce no output here either. Notably, disabling the wlan at this point (using its function key) causes it to remain disabled in spite of trying to toggle it back on. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1041116 Title: Brightness hotkeys have no effect on Clevo laptop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1041116/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 938758] Re: AutoHidden launcher reveal sensitivity adjustment should allow disabling push-past for wacom tablets
If the wacom drivers offered a little more (closer to the windows counterpart) functionality in terms of mapping, one could easily map the monitor to a subset of the tablet surface, allowing to push past the edge of the desktop. I'm fairly sure there is a way of editing some settings manually to allow this. But this is a bit of a hack, and I doubt anyone would consider it an elegant solution. The launcher should work as long as the cursor can reach the edge of the screen, without requiring that it also be able to reach past it. Since wacom provides the underlying technology for several tablet PCs and also because absolute positioning is the only sensible choice for a touch-interface, i think the priority in dealing with this issue ought to be be higher. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/938758 Title: AutoHidden launcher reveal sensitivity adjustment should allow disabling push-past for wacom tablets To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/938758/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 874355] Re: Dell studio 1747 overheating, fans spin slow even above high temp.
If they ever need a thermal shield for a spacecraft in the future I'll recommend a sandwich of intel processors. All the while I can hardly hear the fans spinning (there is some ambient noise but i'd expect this thing to be blasting out flames right now) but I can tell that those 8 processing threads are running a lot slower than when the temperature was lower so i think the system is throttling the CPU clock to deal with it instead of ramping up the fan speed. attached is a screenshot of what Im seeing from the system monitor (conky) when running parallelised code (using openMP) on my dell laptop ** Attachment added: screenshot of process monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/874355/+attachment/2939837/+files/burning.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874355 Title: Dell studio 1747 overheating, fans spin slow even above high temp. [Bug 874355] Re: Dell studio 1747 overheating, fans spin slow even above high temp.
I couldn't get my computer to boot with the release candidate kernel. 3.1.0-0301rc9-generic_3.1.0-0301rc9.201110050905_amd64 Using the latest Daily build 3.1.0-999-generic_3.1.0-999.201110040905_amd64 I could boot in recovery mode (failsafe graphics). There I have the same amount of information in /proc/acpi as mentioned before, ie no thermal or fan-related stuff. Still in the daily build: I used photoshop (under wine) to do some filtering on a large image. This takes one of the threads to 100% capacity for a while. The fans speed up but after 10 minutes sensors return the following: sensors coretemp-isa- Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +95.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +86.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 2: +87.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 3: +86.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Now, since I have no way of actually checking the fan speed (suggestions anyone?) I can't say if they are at maximum or not. It may also be a hardware issue (loosely attached heat sinks, not enough thermal pastedust?). [Bug 874355] Re: Dell studio 1747 overheating, fans spin slow even above high temp.
some more information: It seems like it depends on the code being executed, and whether or not it allows the load-balancing to function efficiently. If i run a program with very long loops it seems like the execution gets attached to one core, while producing heat on another core. under these circumstances, fan speed appears to be below maximum, even if temperatures are near-critical. right now it looks like this (information gathered using htop and sensors): core 1: 73 C cpu1 2% cpu2 1% core 2: 75 C cpu3 0% cpu4 100% core 3 72 C cpu5 2% cpu6 1% core 4 90C cpu7 1% cpu8 0% The problem might also be that whatever is setting the fan speed, isn't paying attention to all the readings ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874355 Title: Dell studio 1747 overheating, fans spin slow even above high temp. [Bug 874355] Re: Dell studio 1747 overheating, fans spin slow even above high temp.
I did use to run folding @ home on 10.10, which made use of all cores at 100% before, but I never experienced a shutdown. Since going over to natty I haven't really done so much hard-core computing in linux before so i can't say much about that, historically speaking. The fans DO speed up and slow down with the load, but not as much as I'd expect them to (based on what they sound like, mind you...nothing very scientific). Still when the temperatures stabilize at 80-95 C from using one single thread at 100% my impression is that something is wrong since that's 1/8 of full capacity. I can't find a way of checking the current fan speed to say if it's reasonable or maxed out. I'll report back on the testing with the latest kernel asap. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874355 Title: Dell studio 1747 overheating, fans spin slow even above high temp. [Bug 748994] Re: suspend hibernation not working on dell 1749
Remi: you may need to do sudo update-initramfs -u I just came to confirm that Will Alexander's solution also works on the Dell Studio 1747 (thank you!). Copying the file /usr/lib/syslinux/vesamenu.c32 from natty into the syslinux folder on the USB brings up the vesa boot menu instead of the error (and beeps a couple of times from the PC speaker - i dont know if this is normal or not). [Bug 698160] Re: Natty: Kernel 2.6.37 - suspend broken
My system also behaves as described (tested with and without fglrx, since using proprietary drivers solved the issue for me in 10.10 but seems to make no difference now) my system: ubuntu 11.04 x86_64 2.6.38-8-generic. [Bug 748994] Re: suspend hibernation not working on dell 1749
I got both suspend and hibernate working again after manually installing an older kernel (2.6.35 - http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-maverick/) If you look in the parent directory you'll see that it's quite an old one so maybe it was a bit of an overkill. in any case, two-finger scrolling on the touchpad flew out the window pretty much instantly (I remember having defined some custom driver for that in maverick previously), but edge-scrolling still works. Audio and video still work as they did before and I can't see anything obviously wrong otherwise...but i guess a lot of bugs have been squashed since then so a progressively going backwards might be better. In any case, installation apparently has to be done in a specific sequence: 1 linux-header-xx-all.deb 2 linux-header-xxx-(your architecture i386 OR amd64 goes here).deb 2 linux-image-xxx-(your architecture i386 OR amd64 goes here).deb then run sudo update-grub to make the option available to you under the previous linux version boot option. I dont know if that's helpful in solving the bug, itself but if people need a work-around to the problem in the mean time, this MIGHT be one (no guarantees, since i dont know what im doing half the time!) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748994 Title: suspend hibernation not working on dell 1749 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 748994] Re: suspend hibernation not working on dell 1749
I have the same issue with Dell Studio 1747 (11.04 64bit). Closing the lid enters suspend mode, but gives blank (no backlight) on return. Hibernate shows the screen lock password prompt, then drops to a black screen with a blinking underscore which eventually freezes. After cold-booting the system the fans spin extra-fast for some reason. The problem persists invariantly of using fglrx or community-supported drivers for the video card (which is an ATI mobility radeon HD 560v). I thought that might be relevant because in 10.10 the problem would be present using community-supported drivers but not proprietary. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748994 Title: suspend hibernation not working on dell 1749 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
