[Bug 2069039] Re: Disk password prompt isn't shown in external monitor

2024-06-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The scripts for automatically deciding what goes into the initrd can be
found in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/ and initramfs-tools in
general could certainly be made more user-friendly...

In the end the foundations/kernel teams will decide what goes in and
what doesn't. I just have a preference that we don't reintroduce the
full graphic driver stack into initrd automatically without good reason.
I don't think there is a good reason unless the disk unlock prompt
failed to appear on the boot display.

[Bug 2069048] Re: gnome-shell crash (signal 11)

2024-06-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Actually the fix for https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/3372
is not in 46.1-2ubuntu1, so that's not the right upstream link.

There are some other crashes fixed in 46.1 so please follow the steps in
comment #1 to identify which crash it is.

[Bug 2062426] Re: simple-framebuffer: swiotlb buffer is full

2024-06-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yeah that's not what a proper fix would do, it's just a workaround.

You can work around that new issue by adding 'amdgpu' or 'i915' to
'/etc/initramfs-tools/modules' and then run:

  sudo update-initramfs -k all -u

or get the system to automatically insert all the modules you're
currently using by changing the MODULES line in '/etc/initramfs-
tools/initramfs.conf' to MODULES=dep and again:

  sudo update-initramfs -k all -u

[Bug 2069039] Re: Disk password prompt isn't shown in external monitor

2024-06-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes it's been done before. I think the Nvidia drivers still do it
because they're designed for older kernel builds that don't have
SimpleDRM included.

But "needed" is a strong word in this case. It's unusual that you
wouldn't be able to see the primary boot display at boot time. So in
that case I don't think we should be forcing everyone with disk
encryption to have a bloated initrd again.

[Bug 2069092] Re: whole system hangs

2024-06-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
In case the problem is bug 2062426, please try the workarounds from bug
2060268. If that does not solve it then please follow these steps:

1. Run these commands:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.

2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

3. If step 2 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 2069058] Re: GNOME screen recorder, why are video colors and sizes wrong?

2024-06-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The accented text colour is due to one or two factors:

1. Lossy video encoding (we're not going to change that)

2. GTK3 apps (including Desktop Icons NG) still use RGB font
antialiasing, which is no longer present in GTK4 apps. You can remove
that by running:

  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface font-antialiasing
'grayscale'

and log in again.

[Bug 2069039] Re: Disk password prompt isn't shown in external monitor

2024-06-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Timo is right I think. Secondary monitors will only wake up after:

1. The native kernel DRM graphics driver is loaded.
2. Plymouth detects the new driver and switches to it.

And the native kernel DRM graphics drivers seem to be loading slightly
later now that we have kicked them out of the initrd. In fact I think
there might be a hard limit where they can't even start loading until
the root FS is decrypted.

We want to keep those drivers out of the initrd because they've become
bloated, but also because they take so long (up to 10 seconds) to load
that they're not helpful to Plymouth wanting to display boot graphics
very early. So we rely on SimpleDRM for that instead, which apparently
can only display on the original BIOS display??

You should be able to work around it by adding 'amdgpu' to
'/etc/initramfs-tools/modules' and then run:

  sudo update-initramfs -k all -u

[Bug 2063827] Re: Gnome apps segfault in Nvidia Wayland sessions on Noble

2024-06-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Just tested again. Switching back to Nvidia 535.171.04-0ubuntu2 on Noble
I don't get any crashes in GNOME apps. Definitely using Wayland. They
all just work.

I wonder why it works for some people but not others. Maybe the driver
installation method? I ended up installing my driver using 'sudo apt
install nvidia-driver-535' on the command line because the Additional
Drivers GUI was so slow it felt broken. I suspect I was just too
impatient. But then I did hit bug 2061738 and had to figure out the
workaround for that.

[Bug 2068908] Re: VM guest resolution is not saved anymore

2024-06-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
"Scale Display: Always + Auto resize VM with window" sounds like a
feature of the hypervisor. Which hypervisor are you using?

Usually to resize a VM dynamically it either uses;
 (a) A custom Xorg driver in the guest (but you're not using Xorg); or
 (b) Virtually hotplugging the virtual monitor with one of a new resolution.

Overall I'm not sure which software component is expected to be
responsible for this. It might help to take a closer look at 23.10 where
it worked and list the differences in the guest like kernel driver in
use, and Wayland vs Xorg.

[Bug 2063827] Re: Gnome apps segfault in Nvidia Wayland sessions on Noble

2024-06-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Looks like there's one root cause in mesa/egl-wayland/GNOME causing that
Zink error and the original crash here. Because I don't think(?) Nvidia
should be trying to use Zink, and if it didn't then the original crash
also would not happen.

[Bug 2068873] Re: gnome-shell using more than 50% of CPU by simply moving the mouse

2024-06-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The high CPU looks like it's just because the system is using software
rendering, because there's no GPU. Ideally moving a mouse cursor
shouldn't need a real GPU though, just basic display hardware.

While the high CPU is happening, please run:

  sudo apt install drm-info
  sudo drm_info > drminfo.txt
  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text files here.

[Bug 2068574] Re: Screen lock crashes after playing fullscreen games

The phantom display affects all Nvidia driver versions at the moment.

And yes simple-framebuffer is the same thing as simpledrm. I think the
former is just the internal backend name. Which is reported by
`drm_info` (from `sudo apt install drm-info`)?

[Bug 2068867] [NEW] Wayland VMs freeze using QXL graphics

2024-06-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

Using QXL graphics in a VM (the default for GNOME Boxes), the desktop
freezes in Wayland sessions for long periods of time. I think mostly
whenever I try to interact with an app window? If I'm only interacting
with the shell then it doesn't freeze.

First noticed in 22.04 and continues now after upgrading to 24.04.

Logging into a Xorg session avoids the issue.

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

2024-06-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also that test failure reliability issue (bug 2068119) had already been
fixed in all later Ubuntu releases via Debian. It was unlucky that 22.04
was missing that fix because the fixed-in-Debian path only put it in
Mutter 43 and later. That has also been fixed now so future Jammy
updates won't get stuck on it:

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

2024-06-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I agree the time delay was unacceptable here. Although I did write the
fix immediately, it got stuck in red tape and an element of bad luck.

The offending change could not be rolled back because it fixed an issue
for a major partner as mentioned in comment #23.

For most of May I was away (work and vacation), thinking the fix was
ready and heading for release, with nothing left to do. Turns out that
was wrong because there was a spurious test failure holding it up. I
failed to dig deep enough to notice that blockage existed. It looks like
"Ubuntu SRU Bot" might have failed to send us enough notifications to
tell when the main holdup actually happened. I'm not sure.

Other reasons this bug didn't move faster are:
 * The entire team was busy focussing on the 24.04 release
 * The entire team was also travelling during May
 * Most Canonicalers don't use Nvidia
 * Those who do use Nvidia might not have noticed the bug (like myself when I
started investigating it)

I don't think there's any way I could have given this more eyeballs
during May, but I have personally learned to make to sure open the
correct "excuses" tracking page and be more proactive in checking there
are no silent test failures lurking in the background holding up an SRU.

** Description changed:

- Nvidia driver 550 fails to install any kernel module on Noble.
-
- I've tried installing it multiple times through 'Additional Drivers' and

[Bug 2068623] Re: Problems after an upgrade

2024-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I can see two issues here that might explain "system gets jammed":

(a) sda (The Western Digital 80GB hard disk) is experiencing hardware
errors which can cause long freezes.

(b) nouveau doesn't have adequate firmware which can cause freezes
(actually nouveau can cause freezes regardless).

Please consider replacing the Western Digital hard disk first. Then log
new bugs for each problem you encounter because we cannot handle
multiple issues in a single bug report.

2024-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Jon, thanks. I can see your recurring crash is a segfault in:

  #0 653db2ce7fb8 i
file:///usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/tiling-assist...@ubuntu.com/src/extension/tilingWindowManager.js:99

file:///usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/tiling-assist...@ubuntu.com/src/extension/tilingWindowManager.js:437

so hopefully you can work around it with:

and then log in again.

[Bug 2068574] Re: Screen lock crashes after playing fullscreen games

2024-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The scrolling issue is bug 2066126 so we can ignore that here.

As for the crash, please follow these steps:

Dist upgrades are known to fail mostly due to bug 2054761. The fix for

Thanks for the bug report.

Your kernel log is saying that the Nvidia driver is not cleanly
installed, so please use the 'Additional Drivers' app to remove it, then
reboot, then reinstall it using the same app.

Please also consider installing a newer Ubuntu release. The one you have
will reach end of standard support next year.

[Bug 2068116] Re: when using zoom gnome-shell start to use crazy of cpu

2024-06-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Looks like a temporary issue. Your current boot is using high CPU
because the graphics driver has been disabled by being in recovery mode
with the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter. The previous boot doesn't seem to
have had the same problem.

Please reboot and tap Escape after the BIOS logo appears. It might take
a few attempts, but you will eventually get to the GRUB boot menu and
there you can choose to boot in normal mode that is not recovery mode.
