[Bug 726309] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Nix

2011-02-27 Thread Danny Piccirillo
Public bug reported:

Nix is a purely functional package manager. This means that it treats
packages like values in purely functional programming languages such as
Haskell — they are built by functions that don’t have side-effects, and
they never change after they have been built.

[Bug 332348] Re: Display icon indication for mobile/web client/bot/etc IM users

2010-10-08 Thread Danny Piccirillo
People are giving feedback to this issue. Some developers would be
interested in that.

In response to this, i'm just going to have to quote exactly what you said,
Also another frustrated user...
I've switched to Pidgin for the time being, but i really like Empathy for more
reasons, but I just can't switch till this is fixed...
Its pure logic guys... get this implemented! Its been A YEAR AND A HALF!

You even busted out the all-caps. Tell me what is valuable in that? Tell
me what kind of developer needs to be told to drop whatever else they
are working on to fix this instead. Did you even read the link? Please
don't even continue reading this if you haven't.

(It seems like it should be able to qualify as a Papercut.)

Omer has already responded to that one.

And this bug report has a whole 7 comments in the extremely long time
it's been open.

And the developers, you can be sure, are tracking more than this one
bug, so spamming them with a me too comment does no good. It isn't
about this one post, it's about this trend that has been getting worse
and worse, where it becomes harder to fix bug because of having to sort
through comments like this that add *no* value whatsoever. You can
respond to me privately if you wish to continue this discussion.

Thank you for the extremely helpful comment. Would you mind explaining how
this bug report is expresses excessive intolerance of opposing views simply
for requesting that the Linux-Libre kernel be packaged and available? Do you
think this would hurt Ubuntu? It sounds like excluding a completely free
packaged based on your prejudices towards free software advocates is
fantism, but perhaps not, please explain.

Yes, though the control and security are results of freedom. The four
freedoms require transparency which means the software can be trusted.

[Bug 370675] Re: No easy way to have a fully free install

2010-07-26 Thread Danny Piccirillo
** Summary changed:

- [needs-packaging] Linux Libre kernel
+ No easy way to have a fully free install

** Description changed:

- Linux, the kernel developed and distributed by Linus Torvalds et al,
- contains non-Free Software, i.e., software that does not respect your
- essential freedoms, and it induces you to install additional non-Free
- Software that it doesn't contain.
+ Contrary to popular belief, the Linux kernel from kernel.org is not free
+ software. It not only recommends non-free software but also actually
+ contains it (i.e., software that does not respect your essential
+ freedoms). Because of this, the default install contains non-free
+ software. Here are some links with more info and lists of the non-free
+ software in the kernel:

- Linux-libre is a project to maintain and publish 100% Free distributions
- of Linux, suitable for use in Free System Distributions, removing
- software that is included without source code, with obfuscated or
- obscured source code, under non-Free Software licenses, that do not
- permit you to change the software so that it does what you wish, and
- that induces or requires you to install additional pieces of non-Free
- Software.

+ The mainline kernel does not meet the stricter Free System Distribution
+ Guidelines, nor the Debian Free Software Guidelines, or even the promise
+ made in Ubuntu's Philosophy. Even if by default, some non-free software
+ is included or recommended, there should, at the very least, be a
+ reasonably easy way to choose to have a fully free installation. Ubuntu
+ even has a free software only option available...which still contains
+ binary blobs!

+
+ Non-free software has been in the mainline kernel for some time, so
+ until (and if) that is fixed, the Linux-libre kernel has already done
+ the work of maintaining of fully free kernel which is used in a number
+ of free GNU/Linux distros. Linux-libre is a project to maintain and

[Bug 370675] Re: No easy way to have a fully free install

2010-07-26 Thread Danny Piccirillo
** Description changed:

Contrary to popular belief, the Linux kernel from kernel.org is not free
software. It not only recommends non-free software but also actually
contains it (i.e., software that does not respect your essential
freedoms). Because of this, the default install contains non-free
software. Here are some links with more info and lists of the non-free
  software in the kernel:

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/columns/gnu_linux_and_freedom_nonfree_software_hidden_in_your_linux_distribution
  http://libresoft.es/Members/herraiz/blog/linux-is-not-free-software
  http://manulix.wikidot.com/kernel-blobs

http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/List_of_software_that_does_not_respect_the_Free_System_Distribution_Guidelines

The mainline kernel does not meet the stricter Free System Distribution
Guidelines, nor the Debian Free Software Guidelines, or even the promise
made in Ubuntu's Philosophy. Even if by default, some non-free software
is included or recommended, there should, at the very least, be a
- reasonably easy way to choose to have a fully free installation. Ubuntu
- even has a free software only option available...which still contains
- binary blobs!
+ reasonably easy way to choose to have a fully free installation.
+ Modifying the existing kernel is another option-- whichever makes more
+ sense as long as a fully free install is, at the very least, possible.
+ Ubuntu even has a free software only option available...which still
+ contains binary blobs!

  http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html
  http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines
  http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/our-philosophy

Non-free software has been in the mainline kernel for some time, so
until (and if) that is fixed, the Linux-libre kernel has already done
the work of maintaining of fully free kernel which is used in a number
of free GNU/Linux distros. Linux-libre is a project to maintain and
publish 100% Free distributions of Linux, suitable for use in Free
System Distributions, removing software that is included without source
code, with obfuscated or obscured source code, under non-Free Software
licenses, that do not permit you to change the software so that it does
what you wish, and that induces or requires you to install additional
pieces of non-free software. Ideally, the default kernel should be free,
but otherwise a fully free kernel should be supported.

Does this also combine video files that are split at 2GB?

I just tried your instructions and they didn't appear to do anything.
I'm a little confused by select a folder where the files are

Here is the directory structure of your camcorder:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AVCHD_actual_file_structure.svg
Mine is a sony so it isn't quite identical, but could the few differences mess
it up? Which folder was u supposed to use the script on? I tried all the ones
that made sense to

I had the same problem in Lucid. Then I tried closing all apps,
including empathy and then it worked. I mean it didn't freeze. But it
records only a bit of sound then starts cuting it up... basically still
 doesn't work with sound capture.

Status in Desktop session recorder: Confirmed
Status in “istanbul” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released

 Bug description:
When I try to record a screencast with istanbul the applet loads correctly
and I can click the start record icon, but when I try to stop recording I
 cannot do it.

The Istanbul icon changes to a disk indicating it is saving, but nothing
ever happens. It has frozen, and needs to be killed.

This occurs only when the Record Sound option is enabled.

 WORKAROUND:
 Disable the Record Sound option.

[Bug 574870] [NEW] Tool needed to extract AVCHD video files with metadata

2010-05-03 Thread Danny Piccirillo
Public bug reported:

AVCHD is the standard for high definition video on digital camcorders,
and a tool is needed to extract these files while retaining the
metadata. Currently, users must copy individual .mts/.m2ts files and
combine them together (they are split if larger than 2GB), which does
not keep the metadata. Currently, the only tools available are special
proprietary tools only available for Mac or Windows.

[Bug 574058] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Anomos

2010-05-02 Thread Danny Piccirillo
Public bug reported:

http://anomos.info/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/anomos/
http://anomos.info/trac/wiki/FrequentlyAskedQuestions

GNU GPL
Python

Anomos is a pseudonymous, encrypted multi-peer-to-peer file distribution
protocol. It is based on the peer/tracker concept of BitTorrent in
combination with an onion routing anonymization layer, with the added
benefit of end-to-end encryption. By combining these technologies, we
have created a platform where by no party outside of the trusted tracker
will have any information about who a peer is or what they are
downloading.

Anomos is designed to be easy to use – you won’t even be aware of the
security that it provides. Anybody who is already familiar with
BitTorrent won’t have to do anything differently.
