[Bug 1960911] [NEW] Error message does not state where it's from
Public bug reported: # Preface: I experienced this bug in update-notifier. However, I think this might be a Gtk-wide problem. # Description: update-notifier has a problem and shows error message: -- System program problem detected -- Do you want to report the problem now? -- -- CancelReport problem... (screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/HDRzQ08 ) This message does not state where it's from. The user does not know what is broken and what kind of help they should search for. # Expected Behavior The message should state that it's the update notifier which had a problem. (Side note: It might probably also provide some optional details and explain what actually went wrong) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 21.10 Package: update-notifier 3.192.45.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.13.0-28.31-generic 5.13.19 Uname: Linux 5.13.0-28-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu71 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: pass CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Tue Feb 15 19:22:26 2022 InstallationDate: Installed on 2022-02-14 (1 days ago) InstallationMedia: Xubuntu 21.10 "Impish Indri" - Release amd64 (20211012) SourcePackage: update-notifier UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: update-notifier (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug impish -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1960911 Title: Error message does not state where it's from To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-notifier/+bug/1960911/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1954742] Re: Sound starts delayed (4sec) when using HDMI audio
Apparently there was a problem with the sample output rate. I had to `set both default-sample-rate and alternate-sample-rate to 48000 in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf` Apparently switching the output sample rate for devices takes about 4 seconds. Details: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/issues/1305#note_1197529 My personal problem is solved by applying the specific configuration. Open questions: (1) Could the problem of "it takes 4 seconds to change output sampling rate" be a general problem that should be solved (where? in pulseaudio?). (2) Or should Ubuntu deliver with a defined output sample rate in `/etc/pulse/daemon.conf`? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1954742 Title: Sound starts delayed (4sec) when using HDMI audio To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1954742/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Linux user 5.11.0-26-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jul 15 19:27:01 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I wish for someone to look into this. A system that cannot suspend in 2021 is ... very inconvenient for users. There are many similar bug reports for specific different hardware. I think the main reason is a software/kernel problem. Why in the world on earth would the kernel be allowed to be stopped by any user application? There is no reason, why any process could stop the kernel from working. I hear voices like "but the application might be doing something important". Well, then give it a timeout of 3 seconds. Otherwise the user will be impatient and hard-shutdown anyway. And again: No application should have permission to block the doing of the kernel. Especially if the doing is user-generated. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/816797 Title: [Oneiric] Freezing of tasks failed after 20.00 seconds To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ti-omap4/+bug/816797/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1922186] Re: ibus very difficult to restart
+ Added the PPA and installed, now ibus stays "on" after openning the dialog. 👍️ - `ibus restart` still doesnt work: "Can't connect to IBus" Would be nice to also have a cmd-line option working for this case. FYI: Btw: here's another reason for quitting/restarting ibus: if I call `killall python3` on my machine, ibus/anthy (?) seems to get into an inconsistent state, which prevents input on certain apps. [Bug 1930384] [NEW] Suspension not possible due to hanging vfs access
Public bug reported: Note: The setup I describe here is perhaps a little special, but the problem itself is - I think - a rather general one. Reproduce = - Setup a vm (locally) - Setup an smb-server within the vm and create a read/writable folder - On physical system: Open Visual Studio Code in that folder (`code ./` while in folder or Menu -> File -> OpenFolder) - < Now VSCode on the host accesses the files on the guest > - Pause the VM - Start suspension - EXPECTED: suspension works - ACTUAL: suspension fails with syslog below: Remarks === It seems, that hanging fs-access actions of an application prevent suspension. [Bug 1927819] [NEW] Unable to kill applications

That is: - Killing via a task manager won't work - Killing via `killall [app]` won't work - Killing via `killall -s [yourfavouritesignal] [app]` won't work This also results in shutdown-problems, because even the system cannot kill the app. ( The only solution I found so far is to hardware-reboot the system. ) Suggestion == The kill signal should be honored by the system in every case. [Bug 1927813] [NEW] Whoopsie working is blocking shutdown
Public bug reported: Summary In case there is a crashing application as a result of the shutdown command (Menu -> shutdown ), the shutdown process hangs with the message: `A stop job is running for crash report submission daemon ( [x]s / 1min 30s)` Steps to reproduce == - Start an application, that will crash on computer-shutdown (I use easystrokes or VIPole). - Shutdown computer via menu (not command line (might work as well, but untested)) - EXPECTED: computer shuts down quickly; possible crash reports will be sent the next time the computer gets shut down - or EXPECTED WORKAROUND: The waiting process can be canceled by Ctrl+C - ACTUAL: The user can only wait. Cancellation (Ctrl+C / Ctrl+\) won't work. Only hardware shutdown can cancel the process. Note Aside from whoopsie specifically, this waiting period with no cancellation is a general problem, I think. In case several processes prevent the shutdown like whoopsie does, the user has to wait several minutes (about 15min in one extreme case). A solution for this general problem would be the introduction of a screen to allow users to hard-shutdown any program (like MS Windows does). lsb_release -rd === Description:Ubuntu 20.10 Release:20.10 apt-cache policy whoopsie === whoopsie: Installed: 0.2.72.2 Candidate: 0.2.72.2 Version table: *** 0.2.72.2 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy-updates/main amd64 Packages 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy-security/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 0.2.72 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy/main amd64 Packages ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.10 Package: whoopsie 0.2.72.2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.8.0-52.59-generic 5.8.18 Uname: Linux 5.8.0-52-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu50.6 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Sat May 8 16:01:13 2021 RelatedPackageVersions: apport-noui N/A SourcePackage: whoopsie UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: whoopsie (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug autoreport-true groovy third-party-packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1927813 Title: Whoopsie working is blocking shutdown To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/whoopsie/+bug/1927813/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1922186] [NEW] ibus very difficult to restart
Public bug reported: After closing ibus by task bar -> icon -> rightclick -> `Close` it seems to be impossible to restart it. Here some ways that should work and how they fail: 1) Menu -> ibus - - opens iBus settings - starts ibus service Problems: - No keyboard input is actually processed; I.e. cannot use keyboard then. - Service is not daemonized; I.e. as soon as the iBus settings window is closed, the services quits. Suggestion: - No keyboard input possible seems to be a bug -> should be fixed. - Service should be daemonized at this point 2) terminal -> `ibus start` --- Problems: - This command does not exist. One has to know, that `ibus-daemon` is the one they are searching for. Suggestions: - Implement this command to start the daemon from here 3) terminal -> `ibus-daemon &` / `ibus-daemon -d` - - brings up ibus with usable keyboard (good) Problems: - As soon as terminal gets closed, ibus-daemon quits 4) terminal -> `nohup ibus-daemon &` - - brings up ibus with usable keyboard (good) Problem: - As soon as terminal gets closed, ibus-daemon quits (very strange. something I wouldn't expect from a `nohup` call, by the way). Public bug reported: Consequence of this bug: Unable to (properly) use save function of Kolourpaint Steps to reproduce: - Open Kolourpaint - Press Ctrl+S for saving it - Dialog opens - Expected: I can type in a name and save - Actual: Kolourpaint freezes for many seconds (10? 30?). Then I can press one or two letters, that are shown, then Kolourpaint freezes again for many seconds. Workaround: - Save the file in the default location under a random name (e.g. "a"), use the default image format. - Rename and convert in another program. lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 20.10 Release:20.10 apt-cache policy kolourpaint kolourpaint: Installed: 4:20.08.1-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 4:20.08.1-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 4:20.08.1-0ubuntu1 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.10 Package: kolourpaint 4:20.08.1-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.8.0-45.51-generic 5.8.18 Uname: Linux 5.8.0-45-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu50.5 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Wed Mar 17 15:47:52 2021 SourcePackage: kolourpaint UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: kolourpaint (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug groovy third-party-packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1919413 Title: Kolourpaint: x seconds Freeze on save and every keystroke To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kolourpaint/+bug/1919413/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1909387] [NEW] Xorg crash (libinput related) on middle mouse click with firefox icognito window
Public bug reported: What happens: == Xorg crashes, all unsaved data will be lost. Reproduce == I can't reproduce it on demand. But it happens after a while. - Usually I browse within a Firefox incognito window and use my middle mouse button. - In todays particular case, I pressed the middle mouse button to close a window. - Note: I have `EasyStroke` setup to run on middle-mouse-button click (Program to enable mouse gestures). From experience, I strongly believe this is related. - Maybe `suspend`ing the computer several times is related to this problem. Backtrace == Reading symbols from /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg... [Bug 1906959] [NEW] `apt purge` does not remove /var/lib/docker
Public bug reported: Preface - I'm filing this against docker.io, but it might as well be a problem with apt. - I experienced this with the docker.io package, but I can imagine, that there are other packages out there, that have exactly the same problem. Please read this report as an example for a perhaps generic problem. What happened: === - `apt purge docker.io` does not remove docker's file directory `/var/lib/docker`. Therefore previously used images and other files will be left on the system. This might be expected using `apt remove`, but `apt purge` should remove "config files" as well. - The sysadmin does not get any messages, that there are files left on the system. Generic Problem: apt-get is supposed to manage files on a ubuntu machine. It fails to meet its goal in this case. Concrete description: == - This might be a difficult case, as docker images can be seen as "user files" (not config files). It would not be the right thing to remove those files. - The general user does probably not know about this directory. This is a very potential file graveyard on the system. - Upon installing no one tells the admin (in a clear, informative way), that there will be files create in `/var/lib/docker`. The information is hidden from the user. In that case, apt should be responsible for doing something about these files, if they get deleted. Suggestions / Solution (I don't have *the* solution for this problem. I guess it's necessary to discuss what's the right thing to do) My idea: Put them in $HOME/docker (or similar) instead of /var/lib/docker. (yes, they might be seen as "system wide user files", but I think real admins know how they could config paths and change the location while simple users immediately see that there's a `docker` folder in their home directory) Ubuntu 20.10 docker.io: Installed: (none) Candidate: 19.03.13-0ubuntu3 Version table: 19.03.13-0ubuntu3 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.10 Package: docker.io (not installed) ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.8.0-32.34-generic 5.8.18 Uname: Linux 5.8.0-32-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu50.2 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Sun Dec 6 08:00:37 2020 SourcePackage: docker.io UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: docker.io (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug groovy -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1906959 Title: `apt purge` does not remove /var/lib/docker To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/docker.io/+bug/1906959/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1906241] [NEW] File -> Find in this folder: change catfish command
Public bug reported: Suggestion regarding the "Find in this folder"-custom action to improve UX for the thunar package. Current situation == "Find in this folder" will trigger `catfish --path=%f`. That means: "open catfish on the currently selected path, where "currently selected path" means either of the two: 1. If there is folder selected, open the path to inside that folder 2. If there is nothing selected, open the path to the currently open folder Suggested behavior: Change command to `catfish --path=%d` (open catfish with the path of the currently viewed (open) folder) Reason: === 1. I would say this is the expected behaviour for the general user. 2. The perception of "this" in "Find in this folder" seems to be stronger towards the currently viewed folder than the currently selected folder. lsb_release -rd === Description:Ubuntu 20.10 Release:20.10 policykit === thunar: Installed: 1.8.15-1 Candidate: 1.8.15-1 Version table: *** 1.8.15-1 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.10 Package: thunar 1.8.15-1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.8.0-30.32-generic 5.8.17 Uname: Linux 5.8.0-30-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu50.2 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Mon Nov 30 18:25:47 2020 RebootRequiredPkgs: linux-image-5.8.0-31-generic linux-base SourcePackage: thunar UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: thunar (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug groovy third-party-packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1906241 Title: File -> Find in this folder: change catfish command To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunar/+bug/1906241/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Suggestion regarding the "Find in this folder"-custom action to improve UX for the thunar package. Current situation === File -> "Find in this folder" has no shortcut by default. Suggested = Add shortcut: Ctrl+F Reasons: Which file manager would not have a search shortcut ( for me this is so natural, that I can't come up with any better explanation ) Misc: = `Ctrl+f` will interfere with thunar's default `Ctrl+f` shortcut, which would open the GTK treeview search box. I want to emphasize, that this feature is no a search in the way the general user nowadays would expect. Therefore I see no problem replacing thunar's default Ctrl+f with the one opening catfish. lsb_release -rd === Description:Ubuntu 20.10 Release:20.10 policykit === thunar: Installed: 1.8.15-1 Candidate: 1.8.15-1 Version table: *** 1.8.15-1 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.10 Package: thunar 1.8.15-1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.8.0-30.32-generic 5.8.17 Uname: Linux 5.8.0-30-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu50.2 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Mon Nov 30 18:15:39 2020 RebootRequiredPkgs: linux-image-5.8.0-31-generic linux-base SourcePackage: thunar UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: thunar (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug groovy third-party-packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1906240 Title: File -> Find in this folder: add shortcut: Ctrl+f To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunar/+bug/1906240/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1898713] [NEW] Xorg crashes sometimes with Easystrokes
Public bug reported: Xorg crashes, session closes, all unsaved data is gone. What I did / Reproducing === It happens when I use Easystrokes to emulate `Ctrl+F4` or `Ctrl+PageUp/Down`. So far it happened about 5 recognized times, 3 recorded within the last 3(?) month. twice during tab switching in incognito Firefox and once in VSCode. Reproducability I feel it's very consistent in crashing in Firefox incognito. But it's not purposely reproducible 100%. I would give more information, but the stacktrace of the crashdump does not tell much. I installed debug symbols for xorg, but they made no change viewing it. Here is the (obscured) stack trace: ``` Reading symbols from /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg... Reading symbols from /usr/lib/debug/.build-id/c1/54f39135c0adc1b59f5b6dd49a73301b4311c8.debug... [Bug 1890014] Re: Segfault at startup in package `Ghostwriter`
I'd like to add a trace, but apport-unpack is not able to unpack the crash file. However, I wonder if no one else is affected by this problem. [Bug 1897826] [NEW] Button for changing input type outside of textfield does not work
Public bug reported: Reproduce == 1) Open a File manager 2) Press the button for changing the input language ( on Japanese keyboards that's the `半角・全角・漢字` button below `ESC`. 3) Expected: Input language changes Actual: Input language does not change Workaround == - Click inside a random text field - Press the button for changing input language Why is this important? == When navigating around the system, it's sometimes necessary to switch to English input without having a text field. Consider this example - Image you have an English file structure - Set the input language to Japanese - Open a file manager - Search for a folder/file by starting to type - You'll get gibberish because you're trying to write English with Japanese input. The file selection cursor might even jump to random position according to your input. - Press `Esc` to try again in English. - Press The language changing button - Start typing again. - You get gibberish again, because outside of the search field the language-changing button press was ignored. lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS Release:20.04 apt-cache policy ibus-anthy: Installed: 1.5.11-1build1 Candidate: 1.5.11-1build1 Version table: *** 1.5.11-1build1 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 Package: ibus-anthy 1.5.11-1build1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.4.0-48.52-generic 5.4.60 Uname: Linux 5.4.0-48-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu27.9 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Wed Sep 30 09:58:41 2020 SourcePackage: ibus-anthy UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to focal on 2020-07-24 (67 days ago) ** Affects: ibus-anthy (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug focal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1897826 Title: Button for changing input type outside of textfield does not work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus-anthy/+bug/1897826/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1889030] Re: Upgrade process uninstalled other-repo-packages
That does not meet the criteria for an explicit warning. The process showed about 150 "packages to be removed". Voice of the general user: - What is a package? (I install "apps" or "software") - What is: idle-python3.7 libgcc1:i386 かきくけこ鬱食飲酒運転踵眉毛 ... ? - You expect me to check 150 packages to make sure, that non of the 300 apps, that I installed over the years is not in that list? Isn't this the kind of work computers were made for? Meaning: A user wouldn't find it in the salad of cryptic names. But the real problem happens before that: Why in the world would the system remove a software the user *manually* installed? I think the user wouldn't even think about checking that list, because he wouldn't imagine, that the system would do such a thing. Defining "explicit": == You installed the following applications. Unfortunately the system is not able to update or retain them. They have to be removed. If you need them please re-install them: Application |Reason ---|- qgis | [reason why this package can neither be kept nor updated] | == Of course a perfect solution would be: Don't touch manual installations of the user (which I thought is the default behaviour, btw). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1889030 Title: Upgrade process uninstalled other-repo-packages To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1889030/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1888801] [NEW] Enhancement: Put all user interaction during upate at the very beginning or end.
Public bug reported: Current situation: === You have to stay next to your upgrading machine while upgrading, because user interaction might be necessary (e.g. keep or overwrite file xxx). I.e. you cannot let your computer do the upgrade alone. Suggestion: === Move all interaction, that might be required at the beginning of the process or at the end. If at the end: after answering the questions the update should be finished within a very short period of time. OR Tell the user in advance "Please stay in front of the computer, there might be questions popping up" and "You can now leave the computer until step X." Merit of the Suggestions: = The (long taking) upgrade process can run without a human watchdog. Difficulty == I'm aware, that this is probably not one of the easier tasks to do. My scenario (Sidenote: This scenario is a nice presentation of "I'm too busy using/fighting it, so I don't have time 'supporting' it") This is what happened during my upgrade process: (at the beginning I encoutered a different bug) - Menu -> Update - Dialog pops up: "Everything is updated. You should upgrade" - click "upgrade" - dialog disapears - nothing happens - Menu -> Update - Dialog pops up: "Everything is updated. You should upgrade" - click "upgrade" - dialog disapears - nothing happens - I figured out the dialog is lying. There was one package, that is not in it's latest version. Also, it needed to be `install`ed, because even `sudo apt-get upgrade` would not catch it. (Note: `sudo do-release- upgrade` would tell "please first update all packages", but would not tell me which ones I need to update. Aunt Tilli would've already be lost by now, I guess - Finally I get the upgrade window to appear. I click "upgrade". - Dialog "Upgrading Ubuntu to version 20.04" appears. It start running. - I leave the computer alone. - After around 10 minutes(?) the fan calms down a little ... weird sign. - (I hope I remember this correctly) I think after step "Preparing to upgrade" or "Setting new software channels" I get asked "Please close all apps". ... ok.. at least this dialog could be place right in the beginning of the process? Suggestion: Put it in the beginning. Maybe even merge it with the first dialog where the user says "upgrade. - Finally, "Getting new packages"-step started. I leave the computer alone for 1.5 hours. - Fan is not even working anymore... weird sign. - I get asked if I want to keep a certain file or overwrite it. - The upgrade process paused at about 5 to 10% for that question. Now I have to cut my productive time because the computer is unusable during upgrade. -- Side note: I've never even touched that file. How should I know what to do with it? The dialog doesn't even tell me which option is recommended. And George Average would wonder what all the + and - signes in that text box mean ... besides the "foreign language" that's contained. - This dialog was only one out of many. I resorted to checking back on my computer every 10 minutes to click away one of those messages for changing files, that I've never touched. - Through that I also caught the upgrade-pause for "remove the following packages". ... This dialog was also fun because the list is divided into categories "Remove" and "No longer needed". Does that mean, that "No longer needed" apps are not removed? (No it doesn't. But the language infers it kind of) Ok, I admit it. It's my own fault. This happend every update on every machine since I started using Ubuntu from 16.xx. I should've been wiser by now. [Bug 1885749] [NEW] Enhancement: Remove default Emoji shortcuts
Public bug reported: Current Situation === (1) Per default ibus preferences are hidden in Ubuntu (I would say it's very difficult to reach ibus feature) (2) ibus has two default shortcuts, apparently for Emoji-something: - Ctrl+shift+e - Ctrl+shift+u (2.1) These shortcuts can prevent shortcuts from other applications being used (one example: VSCode's "show files" (2.2) Because of (1) it's extremely difficult to change these shortcuts, if they cause any problems - Especially because of (2.3). (2.3) The user has no way of knowing that ibus introduced these shortcuts (because they would only use Settings->Region & Language, which does not show any shortcut options) (3) I guess the Emoji shortcuts ( (2) ) have no benefit for a normal user. Reason (guess): The normal user would not understand what to do after pressing the shortcut) Suggestion Remove shortcuts as a default setting Misc - Why is this bug not filed in github.com/ibus/ibus/issues? -> Because in ibus as standalone, where the user has a direction connection to it, it might make sense to keep the shortcuts. For the moment I would say this is a Ubuntu related issue, as ubuntu is hiding the dialog. (... why is the dialog gui even installed, if we don't was to show it? ...)
