[Bug 1736784] [NEW] "Open Containing Folder" from firefox always opens in Browser window even when Spatial Mode enabled

2017-12-06 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

If you download a file in Firefox and Right Click/Open Containing Folder
on it, the Caja displayed window is always a browser window, even when
Spatial Mode is enabled. It'd be nice to have whatever channel is being
used here respect the Spatial/Browser preference.

[Bug 949839] Re: Windows moves always to be fully in current viewport

2012-05-27 Thread Dave Ahlswede
For what it's worth, a quick band-aid for me was to take the
plugins/place/place.cpp and plugins/place/place.h from the 0.9.6
(Oneiric) source tree, put them in the 0.9.7.8 source tree and re-
compile.

You lose whatever bugfixes and tweaks came with the new version, but it
fixes a number of problems related to this bug, such as fullscreen flash
video getting pushed down by the panel.

[Bug 1004314] [NEW] Firefox-globalmenu: Links that open in new windows don't get global menu

2012-05-24 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

When browser.link.open_newwindow is net to 2 (Open in new windows
instead of new tabs), the globalmenu extension seems to miss it, and
that window only gets a local menu. This is easily experienced by going
to, for example, phoronix.com and clicking one of the links in the right
sidebar.

This doesn't seem to apply to windows opened by control-clicking on
links, as they open properly.

[Bug 848104] Re: Show desktop command doesn't work

2012-05-24 Thread Dave Ahlswede
I didn't experience this in Natty or Oneiric, but I am experiencing it
in Precise--With the "Show Desktop" Plugin, but not the "Fade to
Desktop" plugin, the windows seem to do their flying off-screen, but
then pop back to their previous locations.

The issue can *usually* be avoided in the Show Desktop plugin by
clicking the desktop before hitting the keystroke, but not always.

I'm not using unity at all either, for what it's worth.

[Bug 986449] [NEW] Intuos3: press-and-drag with pen warps to corner on release

2012-04-20 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

I'm pretty sure this is a new regression to Oneiric, as i don't always
use my tablet as a primary input anymore, but basically, i have the
problem that doing the tablet equivalent of a click-and-drag, i.e.
pressing the pen to the drawing surface, moving it a distance, and
releasing, seems to warp the pointer briefly to the upper left or upper
right corner of the screen before the 'button press' is released.

The most obvious symptom of this is that when i click the titlebar of a
window to move it, the window always jumps to the corner of the screen,
making it effectively impossible to do basic window management.

This appears to be confined to devices in absolute mode; The problem
doesn't happen when using the Wacom mouse, or setting the pen to
relative mode. It's also specific to linux--the tablet functions just
fine in Windows.

I initially thought the bug might be related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xf86-input-wacom/+bug/560180 ,
but applying the fixes from that to the Oneiric driver didn't have any
noticeable effect.

[Bug 782655] [NEW] No way to tell log viewer not to open not-found files.

2011-05-14 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Over the course of upgrading my installation several times, the Log
Viewer program has accumulated several files in its collection that no
longer exist on my computer, and unfortunately, because there is no
option to tell the program "I understand these files are missing. Please
don't try to load them again", i get the same error dialog every time i
open the program.

It would be very nice to have a button the dialog that lets me tell the
program to remove those files from its list permanently.

[Bug 718100] Re: Add possibility to change output device

2011-05-13 Thread Dave Ahlswede
In my case, this feature would solve a far more mundane problem--I often
use Skype for chatting, with a USB webcam's microphone for audio.
However, being a hotpluggable device, the camera occasionally gets
deselected in the Input tab.

If this happens while Skype is running (or if by chance i'm not paying
attention to the tab when i launch skype), i previously thought i had to
close and restart the entire program just to switch output device--very
inconvenient when a call was already started. (I later found out about
pavucontrol for this purpose)

What would fix this issue for me--without further complicating the UI--would be
if changing the device selected in the input or output tab would migrate all
the current pulseaudio streams to the new device. Or perhaps some smart method,
if programs had manually selected a pulse device, not to change that, but to
change all that had selected 'default'.

[Bug 772853] [NEW] Incorrectly says 'directory' key is missing

2011-04-28 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: schroot

I'm setting up a Lucid chroot under Natty according to the directions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebootstrapChroot

my config file looks like the following:
/etc/schroot/chroot.d/lucid-i386

  description=Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid for i386
  directory=/srv/chroot/lucid-i386

however when i try running 'schroot -l' as the guide recommends to test config,
i get the following error:
E: /etc/schroot/chroot.d/lucid-i386: [lucid-i386]: Required key ‘directory’ is
missing

I've tried moving the directory= line to every other line of the file
with no success, and i've even tried copy-pasting it several times---
that just makes schroot complain about a duplicated key.

[Bug 661528] [NEW] XRandr support not enabled

2010-10-15 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

SDL Supports the use of XRandr instead of XVidMode for changing
resolutions in fullscreen (though this is disabled by default, and
enabled by setting an environment variable)

In most circumstances this is unimportant, but in some applications
(such as Grafx2) where one might wish to use a Wacom tablet, XRandr
support is critical, as using xvidmode for fullscreen will force you to
use a small portion of the tablet surface (proportional to the
application resolution's fraction of the full desktop resolution)

This can easily be solved by having libxrandr-dev and x11proto-randr-dev
as build dependencies.

[Bug 659126] [NEW] RFE: Way to calibrate /dev/input/eventX joysticks

2010-10-12 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

As games on Linux increasingly transition to using /dev/input/eventX
devices instead of /dev/input/jsX devices (SDL uses event devices by
default now, and libois can only use event devices), users of older
joysticks are faced with the problem of not being able to calibrate them
--with newer ones, this tends not to be a problem, but with older
joysticks (in my case, a Gravis XTerminator Digital gamepad, which has
issues with center drifting and less-than-full range of motion
reporting), it can be critical.

There's one userspace alternative, evmapd (
http://users.softlab.ntua.gr/~thkala/projects/evmapd/evmapd.html ), but
it's limited in what it can do (imperfect auto-calibration only), and
leaves extraneous device nodes that some programs can't intelligently
deal with.

It would be extremely nice if there was a calibration/remapping API similar to
what js devices support, that worked on event devices (and even better if both
synchronized their data)

[Bug 629194] [NEW] Force uvcvideo device number

2010-09-02 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

I have just recently added a UVCVideo compatible webcam to my system
(Logitech Quickcam Communicate Deluxe S7500, ID 046d:09a2), and
unfortunately, it has taken over /dev/video0 from the existing PCI TV
Tuner card. Unfortunately, programs that use the TV Tuner Card (e.g.
MythTV, TVTime) seem to be much less tolerant of the device node
changing than webcam-using programs like Cheese or Skype, so I would
like to force the webcam to use /dev/video1, but unfortunately, there
seems to be no module option for forcing the device number in UVCVideo.
(there is in bttv, however, but forcing that to 0 doesn't help when 0
has already been taken).

It would be of great help to be able to pass a parameter like video_nr,
or ALSA's index parameter to uvcvideo to a non-zero device number, as at
the moment i have to manually unload and reload the drivers to get back
to a sane state.

[Bug 629145] [NEW] Automagic ToolID support

2010-09-02 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

The Windows Wacom driver is able to automatically detect and use
separate settings for multiple mice or styli when used with a Wacom
Tablet--In Linux, this can currently only be done by disabling
hotplugging and configuring every device manually. For those of us with
Wacom tablets and more than one mouse or stylus, it would be very nice
if these could be automatically recognized and added as new devices
recognizable by Gimp, et. al. Preferrably in a way that would be
transparent to those who only use a single tool.

This is an issue as of 10.04

[Bug 608751] [NEW] Provide "optimize for fast removal" support for removable media

2010-07-22 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udisks

It would be nice if there were some way for the user to tell udisks to
mount a removable device with write caching disabled-- roughly
equivalent to Windows' "Optimize for Fast Removal" option. HAL could
accomplish through specifying mount options in gconf, but there appears
to be no such way to accomplish this in udisks.

[Bug 571588] Re: Ubuntu chat theme uses ugly avatar scaling

2010-07-12 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Scaling also currently doesn't preserve aspect ratio of avatars, so if a
user has a non-square avatar, it will be stretched unevenly.

Adding screenshot to illustrate this; The same contact is shown in the
list and the conversation window; the Avatar is a 100x25 red rectangle,
and is stretched out to square in the conversation window.

[Bug 604392] Re: "Ubuntu" style should use theme colors when possible.

2010-07-12 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Attached are four screenshots to illustrate, one illustrating the Ubuntu
style ,which does not adapt to theme colors, and one illustrating the
Classic style that does. The first set are using the Nodoka-Midnight
light-on-dark GTK theme, and the second is using a GTK Theme of my own
creation that uses dark-on-light, but with non-white input boxes

Note how the text entry areas at the bottom (and all similar widgets in
the theme) are a non-white color, but the message history area is always
white in the Ubuntu chat style, which makes it not integrate well to
these GTK themes.

[Bug 604392] [NEW] "Ubuntu" style should use theme colors when possible.

2010-07-11 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Currently as of Lucid, the "Ubuntu" theme for Empathy uses the same
colors, regardless of the current theme. This looks jarring, especially
when the user is using a light-on-dark theme, or a theme with a color
other than white for input boxes.

If it's not possible to derive sensible colors for all the elements from
the GTK theme, it would help if at least the background behind the text
bubbles could be colored to match the current theme.

[Bug 269489] Re: Missing window decoration

2009-05-12 Thread Dave Ahlswede
I have this problem as well--my laptop is technically capable of running
compiz at DefaultDepth 24, but it's very sluggish. 16bit worked
wonderfully up until Intrepid.

This seems to be a bug with the Intel graphics driver; When in 16bit
mode, it no longer reports the 32bit visuals that compiz needs for its
effects. I've attached the output of glxinfo to illustrate; none of the
visuals reported have a depth greater than 16

In this case, i do have a joystick already hooked up, so the tablet is

I've changed my xorg config file slightly since originally filing the

had no effect on the problem. I will mark the areas changed.

[Bug 300143] [NEW] Wacom Joystick device interferes with joystick-using games in X

2008-11-19 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wacom-tools

In Intrepid, the Wacom driver seems to create a /dev/input/js node--
When X is running, these devices are nonfunctional--they return -32768
on all axes, according to jstest.

Unfortunately, this plays havoc with games that use joysticks-- if the
tablet happens to be joystick zero, the game tries to use it, and ends
up with a joystick that's stuck at full up-left. Udev hackery might be
able to solve this, but for the time being i've been relegated to
manually deleting the tablet's joystick node before starting up any
games.

[Bug 296585] [NEW] "Archive Mounter" action should open mounted folder

2008-11-10 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

The "Archive Mounter" action in Intrepid, when mounting an archive file,
doesn't pop up a nautilus window for it, as would happen for say,
browsing a network share or inserting a removable disk (even with the
proper preference selected in Nautilus' configuration.

This makes an otherwise intuitive action (browsing an archive as one
would a folder), far less convenient, as one has to either look in the
Computer:// window, or the places sidebar to even see that anything was
done.

[Bug 290835] [NEW] gtk-window-decorator doesn't respect special decoration sytles

2008-10-29 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

The Metacity theme format allows for the use of different decoration
styles for different window types (the
tag), and this is used by, for example, the Atlanta theme, to draw
smaller titlebars on Utility windows. Gtk-window-decorator doesn't

[Bug 257495] [NEW] TPCButton preference not respected for eraser devices

2008-08-12 Thread Dave Ahlswede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wacom-tools

The Windows XP Wacom driver makes both the stylus end and eraser end of
a pen respect the TPCButton setting (which makes it so you have to hold
down the rocker switch and tap to get a middle or right click, instead
of merely pressing the rocker switch), whereas the Xorg driver only
recognizes it for the stylus end.

The fix for this seems to be a trivial one-liner, and i'm attaching a
patch that works on my system.
