[Bug 1305839] Re: FFe: Support for Third Party Driver Installation
Hi, I think everyone is largely aligned with the freedom aspects of this. This is certainly not a concern for myself at least. What is concerning to me, is that this feature feels rushed and somewhat unfinished. I just had a quick look at the code that landed for this feature: There is no support for third party drivers in enlistment, commissioning or fastpath/curtin. I am guessing the first two can be ignored, depending on the nature of the driver; but the fastpath seems a big loss. The drivers.yaml file is a monolithic file that ships with the code- base. I might have expected this to be a yaml per-driver file, allowing easier stacking, probably managed via an external mechanism (simplestream?). I am guessing drivers.yaml would appear to be a config file that I can maintain as a sysadmin. Am I allowed to add extra modalias as new hardware comes out, myself? What about third party drivers I wish to add? What experience should I expect on upgrade? This, if added now, feels like something that is needlessly hard to upgrade from. It seems the binary drivers udeb for the reference implementation is pulled from both plain http (via wget, without validating against a signed Release file), AND when the PPA is added the signing key is also retrieved over plain http. This would imply a trust failure on both parts of this. It matches the kernel of the current install. Assuming that the pxe installer is still using the netboot from the current installer, is there any assurance that without warning - installs will suddenly stop working, until the third-party repository has updated it? The modalias matching seems to be quite nice. It looks like I can only support one third party driver per node. Is there likely to be a scenario where multiple drivers may be required? Only amd64 is supported as part of this feature. Is it not anticipated that other arches will require third-party drivers? I don't think the archive pocket matters weather this is Universe or Main. By current process, the only thing moving to Universe would achieve is removal from the install media (which could equally be done if in main). Meaning that squeezing in prior to release is even less relevant. HWE Kernel FFe bug 1281765, is left unfinished. Is this something also planned to land? To be clear, I am not against this feature. I was proposing that if landed as a HWE feature post release, where this can be fully implemented without encumbering the upgrade process to be needlessly complicated. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1305839 Title: FFe: Support for Third Party Driver Installation To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/maas/+bug/1305839/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1305839] Re: FFe: Support for Third Party Driver Installation
I really struggle to support this change. It is a clearly impactful change. FFe raised on the day of Final Freeze. Feels rushed. There is no commentary on the regression potential, or the testing done. Not to mention that RC1 was happily released with a broken MAAS installer, that took 2 weeks to fix. This lowers general confidence in the attention to detail, and this upload could be similar. This feels like a hardware enablement change that is better suited as a post-release SRU once it is well tested and the general churn has calmed. I do not see a valid reason why this needs to be on the release ISO.. it isn't an install time requirement? I'm stopping short of outright NACK'ing this, but am rejecting the upload from the queue to avoid it being accepted by mistake.

[Bug 1278466] Re: [FFe] ceph firefly stable release
Sage, thanks for your input. James, If we are committing to Firefly for Trusty, I would suggest getting 0.78 in ASAP to maximise potential exposure. I agree, with testing 0.79 in PPA first, but again - we probably want to try and get it in as soon as possible. That said, if 0.79 is looking late - or concerns with testing, it might be prudent to consider THAT for post release in addition. As Ceph isn't shipped on any iso media, we are safe from image spin. However, please can you consider raw apt-get, juju charms and the upstream ceph-deploy as part of your 0.79 onwards testing. Providing final Firefly is bug fixes and transparent optimisation, I would be happy to consider it for SRU/MRE post release. However, please make sure this is well documented on the release notes. James, I am quite confident you will take personal responsibility to ensure that this process is as smooth as is required. Thanks. FFe Granted for 0.78, with condition of clear release notes. [Bug 1278466] Re: [FFe] ceph firefly stable release
James, thanks for the update. Based on this, do you think Trusty should: - Stick with the current version Or. - Target 0.78 for release, but then... - If 0.79 has minimal changes, and improves stability - get that in prior to release, if the dates make it suitable. - Review changes between 0.79 and Firefly (potentially 0.79 or more likely .80), if a suitable candidate - pursue MRE). If this is likely, we should both release note - and be confident that the update testing has good levels of rigour, with no config changes. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1278466 Title: [FFe] ceph firefly stable release To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ceph/+bug/1278466/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1287224] Re: MAAS random generated hostnames are not pronounceable
Whilst this seems like a reasonably good idea for small deployments and demo, it doesn't really add value to the larger picture of hyperscale IMO. With the primary interface for deployed nodes being juju it distracts away from the juju model of "$ juju ssh 3", where juju should be abstracting away the hostname. This encourages direct access. There doesn't necessarily need to be a 1:1 mapping between machine name to hostname. If there is value in having friendly names for a node, this could be via alias or CNAME - with a functional representation.. such as dbserver1.example.org. This can also be moved between nodes, if the workload migrates. What would have my interest is physical placement node names.. such as CountryCampusOfficeRackShelf (ie uklnbluefin1a).. THEN things get interesting.. but solving that, means you've solved the MAAS<-->physical identification conundrum. :) What happens when the initial pool is exhausted? Should decommissioned friendly hostnames be recycled? Excluding the 7 vulgar words already discussed, would you be willing to accept responsibility for insuring that other inappropriate words are not used? Note, that formal genitilia names, God+Jesus+Mohamed+Buddha etc (which I could see people finding offensive being attached to a hostname) and other inappropriate words such as 'nigger' are present in the system dictionary. Filtering 70K words seems pretty risky to me. No cloud that I am aware of currently provisions dictionary words to cloud instances, and this isn't for lazy reasons IMO. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1287224 Title: MAAS random generated hostnames are not pronounceable To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/1287224/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
