[Bug 1655398] [NEW] 1920x1080 screenshot hangs & fails on clipboard insert (GIMP)
Public bug reported: This is Xubuntu 16.04 with xfce4-screenshooter 1.8.2-2 We first noticed this using Xubuntu while creating multiple screenshots with "Print" and inserting them into the LibreOffice document. open a new LibreOffice Writer document press "Print" choose save to clipboard use context menu in LibreOffice to insert screenshot into document edit document by simply adding 1 as a counter after the screenshot press "Print" again choose save to clipboard use context menu in LibreOffice to insert screenshot into document edit document by simply adding 2 as a counter after the screenshot repeat until either the insert hangs an fails (for us it happened on the 3-8 iteration) With a resolution of 1920x1080 we can insert about 6-7 full screen screenshots before the insert hangs for about ~30 seconds without inserting any contents. Yet editing may be resumed after words. We can also start LibreOffice Calc and attempt an insert and it would report the failure that it could not insert the image. We can also: start a fresh GIMP instead press "print" Choose File->Create->From Clipboard here we expect the insertion of the screenshot yet instead: wait for the ~30 second hang have GIMP report there that it could not retrieve image Data (If you start with GIMP it may work for the first few screenshots until it hangs and fails.) Since this is reproducible with LO and GIMP we are assuming that the issue is with xfce-screenshooter. [Bug 1111882] Re: GnuTLS recv error (-9): A TLS packet with unexpected length was received
TJ stated in early 2013: "Additional research seems to indicate this is a known intentional gnutls behaviour (that has been modified in very recent gnutls that makes use of a recent libnettle - as mentioned above). The issue is, apparently, the random size padding of packets to prevent communications compromise for stream ciphers. Unfortunately the changes required are far too invasive for an SRU so we'll have to make do with a work-around." Where do these changes need be implemented? In GNUTLS? Has anyone with sufficient understanding opened an informed report upstream at https://gitlab.com/gnutls/gnutls/issues that could be referenced here? If not, would someone be willing / capable to do that? [Bug 1080350] Re: CPU Overheating with ATI driver Radeon HD Mobility graphics
This bug was reported against 12.04 LTS and yes I am using extra cooling right now because while the ubuntuone syncdeamon is registering it's files and deja-dup is doing it's backup the temperature still peaks at 85°( with external cooling!). So the issue still exists. I'll try to install a current live image in a spare SSD on the weekend as requested. But isn't this a little late in the release cycle to actually fix anything for the upcoming LTS? Anyway...I will try. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1080350 Title: CPU Overheating with ATI driver Radeon HD Mobility graphics To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/1080350/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1080350] Re: CPU Overheating with ATI driver Radeon HD Mobility graphics
OK, I've installed a snapshot but I believe it may be too buggy to actually test it: - psensor freezes when configuring the graph - ubunutoone configuration crashes with: KeyError u'8e0fc793-4ee0-49e3-8a9d-38a077438bfb' ... I'll try again with tomorrow's snapshot.

[Bug 1080350] Re: 1002:9552 [Compaq Presario CQ61-320EG Notebook PC] CPU Overheating with ATI driver Radeon HD Mobility graphics
Thanks, put proprietary drivers are not a option for me. I'd rather stick with the external cooling. Despite the error messages, the ubuntu-one files seem to by syncing now. And the psensor preference changes took effect after I killed the process and restarted it. So'll still continue test with this image. Yet it will take a few hours before enough files are synchronized to cause the ubuntuone-sync daemon to saturate the CPU after logging in. You added a 'needs-full-computer-model' tag, yet you have added the computer model int eh summary title. Was this some automation mechanism, or do you need some more information? I will still attempt to execute the apport-collect command. ** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 reproducible trusty ** Description changed: Ever since upgrading from Maverick (with GNOME Classic) to Precise (using Unity 2D since using the default Unity makes the situation worse) my note book regularly overheats with normal usage: I've been regularly using: echo low | sudo tee /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile I've am also using psensor to warn me if the temperature rises above 92°. When 'idle' the temperature is at about 80°. If the CPU is used (merely starting eclipse and letting all the the startup validation processes finish) it quickly rises to 88°. If the usages is sustained (rebuilding a java project) the temperature oscillates between 95° and 98°. If I do anything else that adds to the load (ie. if the temperature is 98° for short period of time), the system freezes, but the everything remains on, fans and CPU temperature stays up. I need to turn off the notebook by keeping the power button pressed. Note that this system overheats /with/ the low power profile. [Bug 1080350] Re: 1002:9552 [Compaq Presario CQ61-320EG Notebook PC] CPU Overheating with ATI driver Radeon HD Mobility graphics
OK so after letting ubuntuone sync finish overnight, login out and back in this morning, successfully starting deja-dup manually while ubuntuone was collecting its files, watching the making of Sintel in WebM in the browser, while installing precise via virt-manager, psensor indicated that the temperature never went above 91° and after ubuntuone finished collecting it's files, dropped to 80° while the rest was still happily using CPU. It was a but sluggish at times, indicating throttling. But it seems that with the default settings (no profile adjustments needed), the code in trusty does not overheat (esp. no lockups) can be reproduced. I will try to work without th external cooling in precise now, to see if this still is an issue there, since there have been plenty of updates since. But I would say that the overheating issue is fixed for trusty. Thanks! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1080350 Title: 1002:9552 [Compaq Presario CQ61-320EG Notebook PC] CPU Overheating with ATI driver Radeon HD Mobility graphics To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/1080350/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1080350] Re: 1002:9552 [Compaq Presario CQ61-320EG Notebook PC] CPU Overheating with ATI driver Radeon HD Mobility graphics
I was able to peak the temperature 96° on precise, but couldn't get it to lockup anymore. So I have to correct my original statement that the issue persists. It was based on the fact that the temperature rose rather quickly above 90° after login while duplicity was running and ubuntuone was collecting it's files. But even with a virtual machine doing some processing and watching multiple vidoes in a browser it seems that the temperature remains under 96° on precise and the CPU does not lockup anymore. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1080350 Title: 1002:9552 [Compaq Presario CQ61-320EG Notebook PC] CPU Overheating with ATI driver Radeon HD Mobility graphics To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/1080350/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1257262] Re: backup-manager is not removing the correct files
Unfortunately that suspicion was moot. It seems the final decision is made in backup-manager-purge and one difference seems to be that the md5 file doesn't have a master: # we can outdate a master only if a younger master exists if ($data-{master}) { foreach my $master_date ( keys %{$g_rh_archives-{$data-{name}}{pathByDateMasters}}) { if ($master_date $data-{date}) { # This is where none of the other files get pushed since master_date == $date-{date} push @{$ra_outdated}, $archive; last; } } } # here the archive is deprecated, its date is to $purge_date else { # if BM_ARCHIVE_STRICTPURGE is true, we can only purge # an archive prefixed with BM_ARCHIVE_PREFIX next if (($ENV{BM_ARCHIVE_STRICTPURGE} eq true) and ($data-{prefix} ne $ENV{BM_ARCHIVE_PREFIX})); # now, we're sure we can outdate the archive push @{$ra_outdated}, $archive; # This is where the md5 file gets pushed } So currently I'm still wondering on whether some analog date check should be added when no master exists, or whether the date check against the master could possibly be bogus. But I'm also starting to believe that the issue really only manifests since the weekly backup (which requires these master checks) is paired with a TTL of merely 2 days. The intent is to insure that the backup is done automatically at least once a week, but only 2 sets of archives should be retained due to space constraints. But I guess that cannot be be expressed correctly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1257262 Title: backup-manager is not removing the correct files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/backup-manager/+bug/1257262/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 232340] Re: CaCert Certificates not installed
I can confirm that this issue still exists in Evolution 3.2.3 provided by 12.04 LTS But I don't want to reopen this issue /in Evolution/ ... at least not quite yet, as I'm not sure it belongs here (or not just here). I believe the correct approach would be to have an application like seahorse manage the CA's that a user trusts and then have other applications like Evolution, Thunderbird, Firefox, Epiphany, ... defer to gnome-keyring to verify the key's and CA's that a user trusts. I'm uncertain whether gnome-key or seahorse have any support for CA's and I fear that most CA handling is within each application as is the case for Evolution. But then the handling of CA files must become much simpler that what is currently offered. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232340 Title: CaCert Certificates not installed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/evolution/+bug/232340/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 232340] Re: CaCert Certificates not installed
The important issue is not who Mozilla trusts, but who the user trusts. The issue also doesn't solely apply to the class 1 root certificate but also to the class 3 server certificate used by mail servers. There are a substantial set of users who use (often their own) mail servers that use certificates signed by CAcert class 3 certificate. Any application should have easy was to add a CA which the user trusts, totally independent of the situation wrt CAcert, which is also a reason why I do not believe that reopening this particular bug is the right thing to do. The correct thing would be to request an easy way for a user to manage her CA's for her applications.

[Bug 913912] Re: Excessive CPU usage in syncdaemon
I can confirm this issue with 12.04 LTS. My CPU is overheating while the initialization is running. I'm syncing quite a few files (I increased my fs.inotify.max_user_watches to allow me to sync about 150K of files/directories). During synchronization the CPU temperature is between 80°-85° C but my shortly spike to 93° (as reported by psensors and by /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp) often this spike will lead to a shutdown of the system. Of course the whole procedure restart after logging back in. It takes about 40 minutes for the initialization to finish, after which 1.5 GB virtual memory is used by the process of which about 1 GB is resident. I currently have to avoid any other activity on this system and insure the system is cooled until initialization is finished, especially if Deja-Dup starts running at the same time. If wonder if a trace would help. http://docs.python.org/2/library/trace.html would editing the shebang line in /usr/lib/ubuntuone-client/ubuntuone-syncdaemon work? Would that help to understand the issue to resolve it? I had to increase fs.inotify.max_user_watches to actually sync 150K files/directories though. Also starting up the sync-daemon takes about 45-60 minutes to register all those files, during which time on CPU is constantly busy. [Bug 179139] Re: Intel Wireless Restrictions: ipw2100, ipw2200 are not Free
I'm glad to accept that you have no personal interest in pursuing this. That's fine since AFAIU you are not the sole maintainer of the linux- firmware package. Yet I do hope that maybe someone else from the Ubuntu kernel-team may find interest in this. Debian already splits all non-free firmware into seperate packages. They then provide http://packages.debian.org/de/sid/firmware-linux-nonfree depending on all these separate packages, yet which also depends on the DSFG compliant firmware, which is combined in http://packages.debian.org/de/sid/firmware-linux-free What this report is asking for, is for Ubuntu to do the something similar. I (and possibly others) assumed that the Ubuntu split of linux-firmware and linux-firmware-nonfree would mirror this. But I suppose that doesn't seem to be the case. Yet I would expect it would be easy for Ubuntu as a Debian derivative to build on the current Debian infrastructure. Fedora has explicitly exempted proprietary Firmware from the thier Free and Open Source Software policy. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Forbidden_items so it may be that from the large distribution, Debian may be the only one insuring that proprietary firmware is not included in their main repository. But indeed, if, as you suggest, this split were already done upstream and upstream would provide seperate source packages, it would make it a lot easier for any distribution to offer their users a free operating system. I doubt that asking any specific existing maintainer to do this extra work will be helpful. But if we could get someone (either from Debian, from libre-kernel contributors or the many Debian/Ubuntu derivatives which try to provide a Free Software distribution) to help Ben Hutschings and David Woodhouse provide seperate upstream packages (or host support to split the firmware for packaging), they may find it acceptable and helpful for this group of users, who value free operating systems. Yet the fact remains this report is about this missing split in Ubuntu. So please do not interpret it as a critique of your work (which is very much appreciated!) if I reopen this report. It is merely an articulation of Ubuntu users' (and in my case canonical customers') request for providing a free operating system. [Bug 179139] Re: Intel Wireless Restrictions: ipw2100, ipw2200 are not Free
Hello Era, AFAIU Unity https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity is more of a desktop environment and has nothing to do with this issue. There currently is no package named linux-firmware-free for Ubuntu on launchpad to reopen any bug. The Ubuntu packages are called linux- firmware and linux-firmware-nonfree. linux-firmware: This package provides firmware used by Linux kernel drivers. linux-firmware-nonfree: This package provides non-free firmware used by Linux kernel drivers. Most of the firmware in this package is for television tuner cards. However, non-free firmware for other classes of devices are provided as well. We assumed that these were maintained in sync and that linux-firmware was only supposed to contain the free-software firmware while all proprietary firmware should have went do linux-firmware-nonfree. Based on that assumption this report was opened, stating that the proprietary intel firmware should be part of linux-firmware-nonfree instead of linux-firmware. But instead linux-firmware contains all firmware from the upstream linux-firmware package, while linux-firmware-nonfree contains further non-free firmware which is not in the linux-firmware upstream package. Since this is not just a single misplaced firmware but linux-firmware contains all firmware from upstream, including all the other proprietary firmware, I believe that this report is the wrong place to track the issue in, as it is specific to certain intel wireless firmware blobs. Instead I would consider opening a new issue against the linux-firmware package to address all non-free firmware. Then possibly opening an upstream report and link to it. It may also be helpful to ask for the linux-firmware-nonfree package to be renamed to linux-firmware-extra- nonfree to hopefully avoid future confusion. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179139 Title: Intel Wireless Restrictions: ipw2100, ipw2200 are not Free To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/179139/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 179139] Re: Intel Wireless Restrictions: ipw2100, ipw2200 are not Free
I just dowloaded linux-firmware from kernel.org. The license clearly states: Copyright (c) 2006-2012, Intel Corporation. All rights reserved. Redistribution. Redistribution and use in binary form, without modification, are permitted provided that the following conditions are met: ... This firmware really should be moved to linux-firmware-nonfree which is part of multiverse. If it is significant enough that it should be available in restricted then a linux-firmware-restricted package in restricted should be considered. But many of us rely on only Free Software/OSI Certified Licensed/DSFG free software in main. Indeed a bug may have been fixed in the sense that the the obligations of license are now met. But this bug is about having this software in the correct package. [Bug 179139] Re: Intel Wireless Restrictions: ipw2100, ipw2200 are not Free
Tim, the fact that the firmware was distributed without the necessary notices at the time, was a real issue and that has indeed been resolved. With the new licensing Debian, Ubuntu and others are in compliance with respect to the obligations to the copyright holders. The fact that the firmware was originally distributed without the proper notices should have probably been tracked in a different report. Yet that's not the issue this bug report is about. Both Debian and Ubuntu provide separate repositories for proprietary software as a service to their users, some of whom value using free software systems and others that just enjoy the distribution. [Bug 482597] Re: Empathy dialpad tones don't work
Hello Dawid, I do not here the DTMF dial tone from empathy while it sends them... but if I call my mailbox to leave a message and then I type numbers on the dial pad and later I listen to the mailbox, then I do hear the DTMF dial tones on the recording. [Bug 988286] Re: After upgrading from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 libvirt-bin does not start any more with --listen
It seems I have a similar issue... in my case it seems that the certificate had expired. Under Lucid, this didn't lead to libvirtd refusing to start, but in Precise this caused startup to fail. I'm not sure whether that's an improvement but it would really have helped if the syslog were more informative than simply spawning and failing something like a dozen instances. [Bug 961611] Re: package-reporter shouldn't crash when sources.list{, .d/*} files can't be read
Yes... actually I have this setup for weeks already so there have been several reboots since then. [Bug 961611] Re: package-reporter shouldn't crash when sources.list{, .d/*} files can't be read
I know next to nothing about C++ but I believe this is a symptom of a programming error in apt: The code in apt-pkg/sourcelist.cc says: ifstream F(File.c_str(),ios::in /*| ios::nocreate*/); if (!F != 0) return _error-Errno(ifstream::ifstream,_(Opening %s),File.c_str()); but the C++ documentation I found says: If the constructor is not successful in opening the file, the object is still created although no file is associated to the stream buffer and the stream's failbit is set (which can be checked with inherited member fail). http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/iostream/ifstream/ifstream/ So I believe that the the if case is arbitrarily failing due to type promotion rules dependent on the address that is stored in F. [Bug 961611] Re: package-reporter shouldn't crash when sources.list{, .d/*} files can't be read
OK, I'm wrong about the C++ error. [Bug 961611] Re: package-reporter shouldn't crash when sources.list{, .d/*} files can't be read
These files contain privileged information. So instead of changing the access to 0664 I set the group to 'admin' and the mode to 0640: -rw-r- 1 root admin 161 Jun 13 12:18 private-ppa.launchpad.net_commercial-ppa-uploaders_fluendo-plugins_ubuntu.list -rw-r- 1 root admin 163 Jun 13 12:18 private-ppa.launchpad.net_commercial-ppa-uploaders_world-of-goo_ubuntu.list I have added the landscape user to the admin group: ayers@schiefer:~$ getent group admin admin:x:119:ayers,landscape Yet it seems that the landscape user still doesn't have read access to these files as the crash still happens with the permission denied error message. I suppose that the issue might be related to the fact that process running as system users somehow do not have access to their group privileges? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/961611 Title: package-reporter shouldn't crash when sources.list{,.d/*} files can't be read To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/landscape-client/+bug/961611/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
