[Bug 1706281] Re: MySQL-5.6/5.7 innodb assertion !lock->recursive assert in sync0rw.cc during high load on PPC64

2017-09-11 Thread David Britton
Hello --

1) Where are you observing this failure? 16.04?

2) It would be a bit premature to commit anything into Ubuntu without
acknowledgement from upstream on this patch (against MariaDB) and if it
is an acceptable change in Mysql. After that, we would want it
committed to the dev release, then an SRU could be requested against
Xenial (16.04).

[Bug 1716500] [NEW] Long boot timeout on artful laptop after X->Z->A upgrade

2017-09-11 Thread David Britton
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop with a broadcom adapter that requires the wl driver. It
works fine, but with an up to date daily artful, on boot I experience a
2m boot delay

  2min 137ms systemd-networkd-wait-online.service
  4.299s plymouth-quit-wait.service
  4.182s NetworkManager-wait-online.service
  3.064s iio-sensor-proxy.service
  1.041s keyboard-setup.service
  1.033s fwupd.service
   973ms dev-mapper-vgroot\x2dlvroot.device

Once the gnome shell display manager is displayed, I notice the wireless
connecting right away. Obviously, waiting for network on a laptop is
problematic in general, so I suspect there is just an oversight in the
systemd service.

There is nothing in /etc/netplan (empty directory)

[Bug 1716040] [NEW] "Running install step" tui window sometimes has odd formatting, is quite verbose

2017-09-08 Thread David Britton
Public bug reported:

some commands squish all the output into the first 3 columns of the tui
box, which looks quite jarring as output is scrolling by.

I realize this is a dev build, but a higher level log would be
appreciated as well for the default experience (maybe with ctrl-alt-f2
taking me to more details). Perhaps setting curtin to INFO level of
logging?

[Bug 1716038] [NEW] UX: Default tour through menus not smooth in a couple places

2017-09-08 Thread David Britton
Public bug reported:

It would be nice if "hitting enter" as much as possible gave you the
right default experience through all of the steps, until you get to the
end of the flow where you should be given a final chance to confirm.
Places where that breaks right now:

1) DHCP on network interface. Especially if I have only one interface.
I have to arrow up to the interface, select DHCP, arrow to DONE, DONE
again, lots of navigation for what should be a defaulted choice.

2) Disk configuration. A "Use whole disk with recommended layout" would
be appreciated. Again, especially in the case of one disk.

3) "Confirm destructive action" step feels like it should be at the end,
as nothing is actually done at that point. Suggestion: Language ->
Network -> Disk -> Profile Setup -> Last confirmation, with big warning,
if you chose to overwrite existing data on disks.

4) Profile Setup. Suggestion, enter on each field should take you to
the next one.

5) Profile Setup. It was surprising to me that hitting "Done" on the
profile button, installed an operating system. I would have liked a
final confirmation page showing me something like a bill of materials of
what I had already selected and would I like to proceed, with a
"install" phrasing as the final choice.

[Bug 1716036] [NEW] grub gui boot menu options install vs try

2017-09-08 Thread David Britton
Public bug reported:

This might be the wrong project, please re-assign if necessary, but in
in testing the assembled images here:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

I'm not sure what "try" vs "install" means in this context. Clicking
try doesn't get me to a usable system that I recognize, instead I'm
taken to the installer. Which I think for the server might make sense.

Should we simply remove the top menu item "Try" and leave "Install"?

It's probably best to open a new bug on this. If you wouldn't mind
doing so with a clear reproduction in the form of "what happened, what I
expected, observations made" that would be very helpful!

Thanks.

[Bug 1711749] Re: multipath-tools: Backport 2 patches to Ubuntu 17.10 (NVMe disks are detected as multipath disks)

2017-08-30 Thread David Britton
Hello -- Thanks for finding upstream activity that you are interested in
putting into Ubuntu. This bug is a bit lacking on something that is
actionable by anyone though. As a rough first pass:

1) no *detailed* description of a problem, just upstream patches that look
interesting.
2) no description of environment where problem is noticed.
3) link to a downstream bug tracker (ibm.com) that is not world readable

In the end, this leads to inability to work on this or assign any priority with
other bugs reported in multipath-tools

[Bug 1710976] [NEW] Livepatch motd enhancement to show people how livepatch can help protect systems.

2017-08-15 Thread David Britton
Public bug reported:

This is a request to add an enhancement in our motd.d to inform users of
the following:

1) that livepatch is available for their platform/kernel if they don't
have it set up and installed right now.

2) When a system is protected by livepatch, and the system is currently
patched (i.e., canonical-livepatch has active patches applied).

3) when a system is protected by livepatch and no livepatches exist yet
for the kernel version, a single line message of 'This system is
protected by canonical-livepatch." or similar.

[Bug 1686183] Re: Ship ubuntu-advantage in ubuntu-minimal

2017-07-26 Thread David Britton
** Description changed:

+ The ubuntu-advantage-tools package is a bit odd as it was first landed
+ in precise to support the ESM effort inside canonical. [0] In order to
+ bring this package up to date across other series in ubuntu, it has been
+ recommended by the Ubuntu Foundations team to land into trusty next,
+ then forward-port pocket-copy to all supported series until we get to
+ the devel release.
+
+ The version here:
+
+ https://github.com/CanonicalLtd/ubuntu-advantage-script/releases/tag/v2
+
+ ... has all on-disk bits correctly working, for all series, but no-ops
+ on any release other than precise (ESM is only for "unsupported" LTS
+ releases as it were). This is a request to land ESM into trusty, then
+ pocket-copy it to supported series of ubuntu once that is finished.
+
+
  [Impact]

   * Allow ubuntu-advantage users to access the extended security
maintenance script with a simple command line tool. This script needs
to hit precise machines and be easy for ubuntu-advantage customers to
enable, thus basefiles was chosen as a home.

  [Test Case]

   * Run ubuntu-advantage, it should print out help
   * Run sudo ubuntu-advantage enable (without sudo it will warn you),
but you need to be an ubuntu-advantage customer to get that token. In the end,
the script simply adds and removes an /etc/apt/sources.list.d entry.
   * you can contact me (d...@canonical.com) if you would like a token for test
purposes.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Low, this is a new script, not included in any automated startup
  paths.

2017-07-07 Thread David Britton
Hi There, thanks for the bug report --

This is fixed in the Ubuntu development release: Artful. ntpd now ships
a systemd job that conflicts with systemd-timesyncd.service that
prevents the duplicate service running. Confirmed on a deployment of
the latest Artful as of this comment.

[Bug 1642298] Re: UEFI Xenial install sets computer to boot from hard disk

2017-07-07 Thread David Britton
Some Testing Scenarios and concerns before we agree that this change
should be made in curtin:

1) After this change, after curtin boots first time, is EFI boot order
a)pxe b)local disk

2) This doesn't appear scoped to grub2-efi, but modifies
grub2/update_nvram, what effect does this have on other bios/firmware
environments that rely on grub?

3) Does a new kernel install work correctly?

[Bug 1690430] Re: [Hyper-V] Advanced networking support on Azure

2017-07-07 Thread David Britton
Hi @Sixiao -- the name comes from the PCI domain number from the script
and name suggested earlier (in the sample instance, and bug #1695119 if
you have access to it). It's really of no special interest to cloud-
init which it is. Renaming to vf0 would be a separate change/SRU,
please file that as a separate bug if that is how you would like it to
behave on Azure.

Thanks!

[Bug 1701852] [NEW] (xenial+) apt-cache fails to run if a single sources.list.d entry is not readable

2017-07-01 Thread David Britton
Public bug reported:

When evaluating:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-advantage-
tools/+bug/1700611

On 16.04 and greater, apt-cache fails to run if a single sources.list.d
is not readable (by the current user). On Trusty, the behavior was a
bit more friendly in that it would run and just not show results from
the file that cannot be read.

My expectation is that when run it would warn if any .list file could
not be read, but show results for everything it can see.

This terminal interaction shows the problem (trusty and precise behave
the same here):

[Bug 1604750] Re: Byobu not clearing update numbers after updates

2017-06-30 Thread David Britton
Hi @jokrebel --

I've also tried this on ubuntu Xenial and can't reproduce. Seems like
it might be flaky for you. Until it gets clear reproduction steps in
ubuntu, I'll mark it as incomplete. This is not saying it's not a
problem, just that it lacks a clear way to reproduce (thus lacks a clear
way for us to fix it in the distro).

Feel free to re-open if this situation changes.

Thanks!

[Bug 1686183] Re: Ship ubuntu-advantage in ubuntu-minimal

2017-06-30 Thread David Britton
I have a candidate for this to be submitted into artful, and then we can
work on the SRU back to trusty after it's accepted. As this one went a
bit out of order (precise first after it EOLed!), I'll just attach the
git tag in upstream:

https://github.com/CanonicalLtd/ubuntu-advantage-script/releases/tag/v2

Currently the script does nothing for newer releases of Ubuntu. Once
those release go EOL and an ESM product is available for them, we will
request an SRU with new bits. But, that will be a while.

[Bug 1700611] Re: sources.list file created for ESM is world-readable, leaks subscriber token to all local users

2017-06-30 Thread David Britton
Hi Steve --

So far what I see as not working if the file is go-r when a regular u:

1) update-manager stacktraces
2) apt-cache policy (on xenial it bails early without printing anything)

Options:

a) we don't care about these things breaking, and file bugs against those
projects?
b) we make the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list file g+r and chown it root:adm?

Let me know what the desired behavior here is if you don't mind.

[Bug 1690430] Re: [Hyper-V] Advanced networking support on Azure

2017-06-29 Thread David Britton
Yakkety and Zesty need verification, but testing *with* sr-iov on those
instances is not supported by Azure. Testing there should be limited to
regression.

[Bug 1701297] Re: NTP reload failure (causing deployment failures with MAAS)

2017-06-29 Thread David Britton
Hi Ashley --

I've tried to repro on the latest xenial images, and I don't see this
happening (with NTP setup in my MAAS). Given the odd shared object
permission denied message, I wonder if there is some corruption going on
on the system?

Until we get a clear list of reproduction steps, or direct access to the
problem on the system, I don't see a way to proceed debugging.

Please set back to new if you get more details.

Thanks!

[Bug 1690430] Re: [Hyper-V] VF renaming on Azure

2017-06-28 Thread David Britton
There is an SRU in progress

[ubuntu/xenial-proposed] cloud-init 0.7.9-153-g16a7302f-0ubuntu1~16.04.2
(Waiting for approval)
[ubuntu/yakkety-proposed] cloud-init 0.7.9-153-g16a7302f-0ubuntu1~16.10.2
(Waiting for approval)
[ubuntu/zesty-proposed] cloud-init 0.7.9-153-g16a7302f-0ubuntu1~17.04.2
(Waiting for approval)

That will address the blocking portion of this bug. The interfaces will
not be bonded, but the instance will boot with basic networking and
allow anyone to bond the interfaces as a post-boot step however they
would like.

A more advanced solution will be proposed.

[Bug 1687712] Re: cc_disk_setup: fs_setup with cmd doesn't work

2017-06-22 Thread David Britton
I recommend to back this change out and re-approach. 2 major things we
found during testing

1) While this solution fixes the example given in the docs and the bug
description, another error is hit as seen in comment #7 and comment #8.
This needs debugging.

2) no protection against an array being specified originally. I.e., if
someone had a config like this they are now broken:

#cloud-config
 fs_setup:
 - special:
   cmd: [ "mkfs", "-t" ... ]

The commit to back out appears to be

Hi, Bernd Stolle --

A patch is certainly welcome, the code is here:

https://code.launchpad.net/cloud-init

Once you clone and fix, you can push up a branch to your repository on
launchpad. Once you do that, you can open a "merge proposal" by viewing
the branch in the LP UI, choosing'master' as the reference to merge
into.

Give it a shot, and ask us any questions in #cloud-init on freenode.

[Bug 1658653] Re: Ypbind service fails to start on system bootup [race condition]

2017-06-16 Thread David Britton
Hello there -- I checked on the latest dev release, booted it multiple
times and didn't see any race, I then looked at the service, which
already contains this fix:

# systemctl cat nis.service |grep rpc
After=rpcbind.target
#

I dug into the systemd.unit(5) which states in the 'Requires=' tag
description (Requires= is a stronger version of Wants=) that 'After=' is
what should be used when ordering is necessary. In fact, Requires= and
Wants= will start services at the same time.

Since After= is already in the dev release, marking this issue fixed.

[Bug 1698222] [NEW] unit tests fail if https_proxy is set

2017-06-15 Thread David Britton
Public bug reported:

https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac
/autopkgtest-artful/artful/amd64/p/python-
boto/20170531_165016_ad9d3@/log.gz

Python-boto unit tests don't like *_proxy env vars set during execution.
They do not reach out to the network, but different codepaths are taken
when a proxy is detected, and the mocks get destroyed in that case.

A lot of failures of the form:

[Bug 1686183] Re: Ship ubuntu-advantage in basefiles for ubuntu

2017-04-26 Thread David Britton
The difference here is a supported machine is up to date, even if it
only has the minimum packages installed.

Asking for another package to be installed to be "supported" is a small
bit of friction that can be removed by delivering the script with
basefiles.

[Bug 1686183] [NEW] Ship ubuntu-advantage in basefiles for ubuntu

2017-04-25 Thread David Britton
Public bug reported:

 * Run ubuntu-advantage enable , but you need to be an ubuntu-advantage
customer to get that token. In the end, the script simply adds and removes an
/etc/apt/sources.list.d entry.
 * you can contact me (d...@canonical.com) if you would like a token for test
purposes.

[Regression Potential]

 * Low, this is a new script, not included in any automated startup
paths.

[Other Info]

 * http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2017/03/ubuntu-1204-esm.html
