[Bug 374002] [NEW] [snd_usb_audio] snd_pcm_avail() returned a value that is exceptionally large

2009-05-09 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

i am seeing a Pulseaudio reporting an ALSA bug which also causes it to
crash.

My laptop has Intel HDA built in as well as an external soundblaster card
connected via USB and a mic in the USB webcam. The snd_usb_audio driver here
appears to be causing the problem. The external card is set as the default
playback device and configured for 5.1 analog output.

E: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but there was
actually nothing to write!
E: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_usb_audio'.
Please report this issue to the ALSA developers.
E: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent
snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value < min_avail.

[Bug 401664] [NEW] No cursor is shown

2009-07-20 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

When I install Jaunty on my Zonbu nettop (essentially an eBox-4854) the
cursor isn't drawn on the screen. The cursor does move but I have to
enable the accessibility feature that highlights the cursor position
when you press ctrl to let me even able to some what reasonably navigate
the desktop.

The input device is a Logitech Trackman Wheel USB, it works just fine
with my laptop but on the Zonbu hardware the cursor problem is present
(perhaps a video driver issue rather than evdev?)

This is very disturbing in part of the desktop workflow.

[Bug 403786] [NEW] Assertion 'pa_idxset_isempty(c->clients)' failed at pulsecore/core.c:176, function core_free(). Aborting.

I am seeing pulseaudio abort after the following message

E: core.c: Assertion 'pa_idxset_isempty(c->clients)' failed at

Aborted

My setup is an EeePC 1002HA with an additional Soundblaster 5.1 Live!
card connected via USB. This crash only seems to occure when I am using
the USB card so it may be a problem with snd_usb_audio driver when it is
configured to use 5.1 (this same card in the default stereo
configuration from Jaunty worked fine). I based this idea on noticing
the follow when running pulseaudio -v

[Bug 403786] Re: Assertion 'pa_idxset_isempty(c->clients)' failed at pulsecore/core.c:176, function core_free(). Aborting.

2009-07-23 Thread David Nielsen
I should have mentioned, the sure way to trick this is play a video then
skip back or forward. The sound will cease completely and in more than
70% of cases Pulseaudio crashes on my machine. Alternatively one can
just let the movie play and it will crash in a matter of minutes
normally. Sound in this configuration is quite literally unusable in
Karmic.

[Bug 403786] Re: Assertion 'pa_idxset_isempty(c->clients)' failed at pulsecore/core.c:176, function core_free(). Aborting.

2009-07-24 Thread David Nielsen
the ppa version seems more stable however I did see a segfault (cause
unknown), both my cards were muted (in what appears to be several places
in both the notification area applet and pavucontrol).

skipping back and forward seems improved though but I would like to do
more extensive testing before I declare this problem solved.

2009-07-24 Thread David Nielsen
Nope the test version isn't any better, it still fails miserably when
you skip in a video. The sound disappears, PA does a lot of things and
then:

I: main.c: Daemon terminated.

Now I would have liked to capture a full log of this, however when I do
pulseaudio -v > pa.log the resulting file is empty. It also likes to
complain that PA is already running and doing pulseaudio -k just results
in a respawn.

Please advice.

[Bug 341418] [NEW] volume applets isn't smart enough to figure out which card is in use

2009-03-11 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

The basic problem here is that I have two soundcards, the built in Intel
one in my laptop and the external USB card I use when I am at home
(since that has digital connectors). However the volume applet isn't
smart enough to figure out which card is in use therefore it seems to
default to the intel one which it displays as muted. Also any
interaction appears to happen on the intel card, when in fact the usb
card is in active use and configured by Pulseaudio.

Gnome-do and docky has a lot of appealing use cases however I find that
it really lacks an interface like Stacks from the OS X dock to handle

[Bug 361597] [NEW] gpk-repo has no way to add additional repos it doesn't already know about such as PPAs

2009-04-15 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: packagekit-gnome

Currently the interface for gpk-repo can only enable repos it already
knows about, this makes it impractical to add a separate source such as
a PPA. Additionally adding gpg keys for this is tricky. Perhaps
investigating the approach taking by distributions like Fedora where
every additional repo comes with a package file to describe it along
with a url for the gpg key which is then confirmed upon installation
would be an option.

[Bug 358714] [NEW] Ability to set GMail (or similar webmail) as preferred email client

2009-04-09 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Probably most users today are using webmail over a desktop client such
as Evolution. It would thus be nice if the gnome-default-applications-
properties application would allow a user to set his preferred email
client according to a list of popular providers such as GMail, Yahoo and
Hotmail.

This should also impact the indicator applet to notify on new mails but
the most important bit would be not breaking mailto: links for people on
webmail. We live in a web 2.0 world and it would be great to acknowledge
that by integrating better with the most commonly used services such as
webmail.

[Bug 358720] [NEW] webcam support for msn in empathy

2009-04-09 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

One of the most requested features on Brainstorm as well as when talking
to users. Also in my personal use of Linux is the ability to use the
webcam functionality when talking to MSN users. It would be nice with
Empathy supported this somehow as it is a major blocker for a number of
people towards Linux adoption.

That alternatives we have for this is pretty much down to amsn which
isn't very well integrated nor a particularly user friendly application.

That package is for i386 and I have as specificed an amd64 system, also
apt-get build-dep xchat-gnome yields:

E: Build-dependencies for xchat-gnome could not be satisfied.

[Bug 394597] [NEW] [0.9.16-test2] failure to init soundcard

initializes my external USB (SB Live! External) soundcard correctly and
the laptops builtin Intel HDA card isn't detected at all.

Working around this is possible by downloading this:

http://git.0pointer.de/?p=pulseaudio.git;a=blob_plain;f=src/modules/alsa/mixer
/profile-sets/default.conf;hb=HEAD

Then creating the non-existent directory, putting that file in it and

[Bug 410205] [NEW] credentials cannot requested resat if previously set to low

2009-08-07 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

There is the scenerio where the user gets into trouble with apport-
collect.

Typically a developer in the course of a bug report request that the
user collect some data using apport-collect.

1. user types in requested command
2. Launchpad pops up and requests access
3. user being careful figures a program that collects data should be given the
permission to read only non-private data.
4. going back to the terminal the user now discovers that he needed to give
more rights to the bugger for it to work

Now in best quiz style we have 3 options to get to set the correct settings
5a. apport-collect --help
5b. run the requested apport-collect call hoping it will reset.
5c. go to your launchpad profile and see a handy list of applications which
have been granted access and options to tweak previous settings.
5c. all of the above

the correct answer is.
rm .cache/apport/launchpad.credentials followed by 5b.

This is failing very ungratefully for no reason, I suspect something the
above listed options should be evaluated. More granulated control of the
sharing levels would be good as well.
