[Bug 1926938] Re: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS

2021-05-31 Thread David R. Bergstein
Like many of you out there I totally disagree with the decision to mark
this bug as invalid. I myself am running newer hardware that requires
support from kernel 12.x and can now only use compatible kernels like
the ones produced by tux-invader, not the ones on the mainline ppa.

[Bug 1885975] [NEW] Kubuntu groovy gorilla installer crash

2020-07-01 Thread David R. Bergstein
Public bug reported:

Available images on cdimage.ubuntu.com do not make it through
installation without the installer crashing. The installation at first
appears to proceed normally, then after completing almost all the
operations, a window pops up saying that the installer has crashed and
that a bug report should be filed. This issue occurs from both
installation options, i.e., Install Kubuntu, or from the live
environment running the installer there.

Below are links to the current versions that are affected:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20200630/
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20200701/

Additional information:
lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu Groovy Gorilla (development branch)

Package affected: ubuquity

What I expected to happen: Normal installation without errors.

What happened instead: Window pop-up reported that installer had crashed
and to report the issue via terminal, executing "ubuntu-bug ubiquity".

[Bug 1870395] Re: Ubuntu Studio 20.04 ZFS Option Fails to Boot

2020-04-05 Thread David R. Bergstein
I have determined that the root cause of the ZFS boot issue reported
here is in the content generated by update-grub. The initial entry for
'Ubuntu (lowlatency)' is using $menuentry_id_option 'gnulinux-simple-
dev/sda4' which fails to load the zfs datasets at the initrd. The menu
entry for 'Ubuntu Focal Fossa (development branch)' uses
$menuentry_id_option 'gnulinux-rpool/ROOT/ubuntu_x', also used by
the advanced options. These entries boot normally without errors.

The update-grub command is part of the grub2-common package, and should
be updated to correct this issue.

I tried the current Ubuntu Studio ISO, dated 4/3/2020, and this ZFS boot

run to fix it or do I need to wait for a subsequent spin of the ISO
file?

[Bug 1870395] [NEW] Ubuntu Studio 20.04 ZFS Option Fails to Boot

2020-04-02 Thread David R. Bergstein
Public bug reported:

As part of installation, I selected the experimental ZFS option. Ubuntu
Studio then installed without errors, however upon booting the new
system there was a zpool import failure and I was prompted at the initrd
to manually import the zfs datasets.

The workaround at initrd was to enter the following commands:

zpool import -R /root -N rpool
zpool import -R /root -N bpool
zfs mount -a
exit

The system then booted up normally, however the workaround above has to
be used for each subsequent boot.

[Bug 1847325] Re: ZFS Installer refuses to install the boot loader on both disks

2019-10-08 Thread David R. Bergstein
I had a similar experience doing a clean install with the Experimental
ZFS option. This happened repeatably for devices /dev/sda and
/dev/sda1, i.e., the installer refused to install to either device and I
ended up manually fixing this issue from chroot operations from the
livecd.

[Bug 1835697] Re: Upgrade to zfsutils-linux 0.8.1-1ubuntu5 fails on Ubuntu 19.10

A workaround I found for this issue is to mark the offending paths as
legacy in zfs and put their respective mountpoints in /etc/fstab. Then
the upgrade succeeds as intended.

[Bug 1834095] [NEW] update-grub fails on zfs with root and boot datasets

2019-06-24 Thread David R. Bergstein
Public bug reported:

This issue was encountered on a virtual machine installation of Ubuntu
19.10 running zfs. After reloading several times from backup and
placing the original version of grub2 on hold it was verified that
upgrading to the newer version of grub caused update-grub to improperly
detect the two zfs datasets, bpool (boot pool) and rpool (root pool).

To recap:
1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Eoan Ermine (development branch)
Release:19.10
2) apt-cache policy grub-pc
grub-pc:
  Installed: 2.02+dfsg1-12ubuntu2
Candidate: 2.02+dfsg1-12ubuntu3 (version with issue in this report)
  Version table:
 2.02+dfsg1-12ubuntu3 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu eoan/main amd64 Packages
 *** 2.02+dfsg1-12ubuntu2 100
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3) What I expected to happen: update-grub runs without error
4) What happened instead: update-grub did not run correctly, resulting in
unbootable system (only entries for memtest86+ in grub menu).

** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1813372] Re: Realtek r8822be kernel module does not negotiate 802.11ac connection

2019-03-02 Thread David R. Bergstein
I have been in touch with several members of the Realtek module
development team. They have provided access to the code for a newer
module, called rtw88, which is currently under review. Based on
comments from Tony Chuang and local tests performed here confirms that
this new module better supports 802.11ac connection speeds than the
previous r8822be driver.

[Bug 1813372] Re: Realtek r8822be kernel module does not negotiate 802.11ac connection

2019-02-26 Thread David R. Bergstein
Per the request above, a message has been sent to the maintainers list
in entry #20 (below is a copy).

Subject: Realtek r8822be kernel module does not negotiate 802.11ac
connection

To: pks...@realtek.com, linux-wirel...@vger.kernel.org,
 net...@vger.kernel.org, linux-ker...@vger.kernel.org

This message is in regard to a bug I have open on bugs.launchpad.net,
1813372, linked below. This issue, originally identified in an Ubuntu
kernel, has been duplicated in the most current mainline kernel,
5.0-rc8, and is in regard to problems attaining a wireless connection at
802.11ac speeds.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813372

At your earliest convenience, please see the bug report above, and
advise if a fix will be available for the r8822be kernel module.

Sincerely,

David R. Bergstein

[Bug 1813372] Re: Realtek r8822be kernel module does not negotiate 802.11ac connection

2019-02-26 Thread David R. Bergstein
Although iwconfig reports a bit rate of 866.7 Mb/s, it still appears
that my wireless connection speeds are less than 300 Mb/s. I recommend
this bug report stay open until information can be obtained on the
r8822be kernel module and any required fixes.

It appears there is a problem with my Verizon router. If I manually set
the 5 Hz wi-fi channel number to any available channel, I see bit rates
of 866.7 Mb/s on my Ubuntu Studio machine.

** Description changed:

I have an HP Omen laptop with dual boot installed. It has the Realtek
8822BE wireless chip set installed, which when running Windows 10 works
as intended, i.e., it establishes an 802.11ac connection with my
wireless router with speeds up to 866 mbps. However when running my
Linux environment, Ubuntu Studio, the connection speed is established as
802.11n, and is limited to 300 mbps.

I also see the following message in my logs which might be related to
  this issue:

[Bug 1814993] [NEW] linux kernel 4.15.0-44 and 4.15.0-45 break tty login

2019-02-06 Thread David R. Bergstein
Public bug reported:

On systems with either version of the kernel installed (4.15.0-44 or
4.15.0-45), login to the console (tty) is not possible. When the prior
version, 4.15.0-43, is running this issue does not occur.

1) The release of Ubuntu via 'lsb_release -rd':
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

2) The version of the package, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname'
linux-generic:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 4.15.0.45.47
  Version table:

3) What I expected to happen:
Normal login via tty

4) What happened instead
login program would not allow login process to proceed, password prompts were
interrupted.

[Bug 1813372] [NEW] Realtek r8822be kernel module does not negotiate 802.11ac connection

2019-01-25 Thread David R. Bergstein
Public bug reported:

I have an HP Omen laptop with dual boot installed. It has the Realtek
8822BE wireless chip set installed, which when running Windows 10 works
as intended, i.e., it establishes an 802.11ac connection with my
wireless router with speeds up to 866 mbps. However when running my
Linux environment, Ubuntu Studio, the connection speed is established as
802.11n, and is limited to 300 mbps.

I also see the following message in my logs which might be related to
this issue:

wlo1: capabilities/regulatory prevented using AP HT/VHT configuration,

Please advise if additional information is needed. Per the bug reporting
guidelines also see below.

1) lsb_release -rd

[Bug 1791477] Re: Thunderbird Multiple Security Vulnerabilities

2018-10-07 Thread David R. Bergstein
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1786951 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1786951

Someone from the Ubuntu security team should determine if this bug
should be marked as a duplicate of Bug #1786951: Update to 60.0, which
appears to be a non-security bug that is limited in scope (applies to
Cosmic release only).

[Bug 1767568] Re: Console DPMS Nonfunctional in Ubuntu Server 18.04

2018-08-02 Thread David R. Bergstein
After revisiting this issue I was able to find a solution, via the
setterm command. This is based on the guidance posted at
https://superuser.com/questions/152347/change-linux-console-screen-
blanking-behavior

For my system I created a new file in /etc/rc.local with the following
contents:

#!/bin/bash
setterm -blank 5

Followed by the following command to register rc.local in systemd:

sudo systemctl enable rc.local

Alternatively, I could have set a boot parameter:
consoleblank=Y (Y in seconds, 0 to disable) to the kernel commandline by adding
it to the parameter lists in /etc/default/grub, either GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX or
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

In any event console blanking does work now and this bug can probably be
closed.

My console display is DPMS capable, i.e., power management functions
worked before upgrading from Ubuntu Server 16.0.4.4. Currently the
display stays on 24x7 with idle keyboard input.

  1) My release information is as follows:

  Description:Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
  Release:18.04

  2) I am not sure what package this issue is tied to. The current kernel
appears to have DPMS support enabled, per the configuration file in
/boot. If the kernel is responsible, below is the version I am running.

  linux-generic:
  Installed: 4.15.0.20.23

  3) I expected to have DPMS support for my console as in the previous
  release of Ubuntu Server.

- 4) What happened instead is my monitor stays on all the time, without
- DPMS controlling it.

[Bug 1767568] Re: Console DPMS Nonfunctional in Ubuntu Server 18.04

2018-05-01 Thread David R. Bergstein
After running the apport-collect command I was unable to log in to
launchpad from the text based browser running on the server. If someone
can advise how I can manually collect the desired logs I would be happy
to post them.

[Bug 1767568] Re: Console DPMS Nonfunctional in Ubuntu Server 18.04

2018-04-30 Thread David R. Bergstein
Per the previous entry, I have retested for this issue with upstream
kernel 4.16.6-041606-generic. No change in DPMS behavior was observed,
i.e., power save for the monitor does not seem to be enabled.
