[Bug 1186214] [NEW] USB headset no input

2013-05-31 Thread David Sowerby
Public bug reported:

New install of 13.04, my Andrea PureAudio USB-SA Headset is recognised
in sound settings, but the mic is not working at all. Sound output is
fine.

The same headset still works fully on a different machine with 12.10
installed, and is not muted.

In Audacity, the headset appears in the output selection, but not in the
input selection.

alsa info is here:

http://www.alsa-
project.org/db/?f=9256809b3ec7ba8e79ce65303dbab91f00465fdc

I made an entry on the /usr/share/alsa/cards/USB-Audio.conf file as
described in #1002952- that partially resolved the S/PDIF listing error,
but had no effect on the problem described here

[Bug 775345] Re: USB headset not selectable in Output tab of Sound Preferences

2012-07-09 Thread David Sowerby
I am not sure whether this will help anyone, but I have just checked my
laptop, which is also running 11.04 (the comment above relates to my
desktop).

The laptop was last updated on 28 June, and works fine.

The desktop has had 3 updates since then and exhibits the problems
described in #27

Pure guesswork, but the most likely candidate seems to be the update on
the 30 June, principally because it contains firmware and kernel
updates.

[Bug 775345] Re: USB headset not selectable in Output tab of Sound Preferences

2012-07-09 Thread David Sowerby
I have not tried to use sound for a while, so this may relate to the
updates noted by David Robert Lewis ... I am back where I was in my
post here of 2011-05-04 (#10):

usb headset / mike appears in "hardware", but not in input or output.
Sound preferences also crashes if you attempt to test the speakers.

I tried the killall pulseaudio of #19 and this made the headset appear
in the outputs (but no mike on the inputs). The "test speakers"
function no longer causes a crash - but there is no sound, so it is not
much of an improvement!

There certainly seems to be a regression issue here on the updates, I
had be using this headset regularly for speech recognition until about 3
months ago

[Bug 954832] Re: HP P1102W cups fails after update

2012-03-14 Thread David Sowerby
Thanks for such a quick response, this is now fixed.

I did as you suggested and found that hp-systray was not running. I
tried to start it and found that something had not been installed
(sorry, I was in a rush and don't recall what that was). Downloaded the
missing package and all working again - and the HP icon is in the
systray, which I do not remember seeing for quite a while.

[Bug 775345] Re: USB headset not selectable in Output tab of Sound Preferences

2011-05-05 Thread David Sowerby
I couldn't afford to wait for a fix, so I re-installed 10.10. I didn't
realise just how much I had configured over the years of Ubuntu
upgrades; it took up a lot of time getting back to where I was - a
shame this one caused me to revert and spoil the good record.

Although I could install 11.04 on my laptop to try ..

[Bug 775345] Re: USB headset not selectable in Output tab of Sound Preferences

2011-05-04 Thread David Sowerby
This is more than just "nice to have" for me - I use the headset /
microphone extensively for speech recognition. This bug has completely
removed that capability.

I can confirm the same symptoms as above - usb headset / mike appears in
"hardware", but not in input or output. Sound preferences also crashes
if you attempt to test the speakers.

Re: [Bug 745599] Re: fails on automatic update

2011-04-01 Thread David Sowerby
Serge

Looked this one up and realised this should have been

sudo apt-get clean

Which worked ..

Easy mistake to make, but thanks for your help anyway, as it pointed me in
the right direction.

This can be closed as fixed now

Re: [Bug 745599] Re: fails on automatic update

2011-03-31 Thread David Sowerby
Hi Serge

I would but "apt-cache clean" is reported as not valid, and I cannot see a
command that it would be ...

dave@ubuntu:~$ apt-cache
apt 0.7.25.3ubuntu9.3 for i386 compiled on Sep 9 2010 22:22:00
Usage: apt-cache [options] command
   apt-cache [options] add file1 [file2 ...]
   apt-cache [options] showpkg pkg1 [pkg2 ...]
   apt-cache [options] showsrc pkg1 [pkg2 ...]

apt-cache is a low-level tool used to manipulate APT's binary
cache files, and query information from them

Commands:
add - Add a package file to the source cache
gencaches - Build both the package and source cache
showpkg - Show some general information for a single package
   showsrc - Show source records
stats - Show some basic statistics
dump - Show the entire file in a terse form
dumpavail - Print an available file to stdout
   unmet - Show unmet dependencies
search - Search the package list for a regex pattern
show - Show a readable record for the package
depends - Show raw dependency information for a package
rdepends - Show reverse dependency information for a package
pkgnames - List the names of all packages in the system
dotty - Generate package graphs for GraphViz
xvcg - Generate package graphs for xvcg
   policy - Show policy settings

Options:
  -h This help text.
  -p=? The package cache.
  -s=? The source cache.
  -q Disable progress indicator.
-i Show only important deps for the unmet command.
  -c=? Read this configuration file
-o=? Set an arbitrary configuration option, eg -o dir::cache=/tmp
See the apt-cache(8) and apt.conf(5) manual pages for more information.

[Bug 639729] Re: Eclipse crashes

2011-01-06 Thread David Sowerby
I have a number of logs of this, symptoms as described above - seemingly
random crashes; I also had the same problem with the Sun JVM, I have
some error logs from that too if it would be of any help.

reported, and it may take a while for me to get round to that

[Bug 120718] Unmet dependency linux-lowlatency

2007-06-16 Thread David Sowerby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-lowlatency

sudo apt-get install linux-lowlatency
Password:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
  linux-lowlatency: Depends: linux-image-lowlatency (= 2.6.20.15.14) but
2.6.20.16.28.1 is to be installed
