[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-20 Thread Davide Depau
I'm running Linux 4.13.0-17-generic (nov 6th) on Bionic on a Lenovo Thinkpad X1
Yoga 1st (20FR) and with this kernel version it seems *UNaffected*. I'm not
going to upgrade it now that I know of this issue.
However, if anybody knows whether this kernel version already triggers the bug,
we can tell that this machine is unaffected.

This is very annoying with Sublime Text too, which binds special
keybindings using the Alt key.

How am I supposed to do that? Will such an old kernel work on wily?

[Bug 1504751] [NEW] [HP Probook 4510s] Fan at full speed after suspend

2015-10-10 Thread Davide Depau
Public bug reported:

When I turn on the PC, the fan runs normally and I have no issues at
all. However, if I suspend the computer and resume it, the fan runs at
full speed, regardless of the actual internal temperature. This is very
annoying in libraries.

This bug has been around for years, I just didn't need the computer in quiet
places back then, so I never reported it.
I believe it didn't happen with Maverick.

I'm running Ubuntu 15.10, with Linux 4.2.0-14-generic x86_64 (systemd).

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2015-03-12 Thread Davide Depau
This issue is not getting enough attention. I don't know if you all have SSDs
but most people don't. On hard disk drives this is a huge issue. System
responsiveness drops when tracker is running and pretty much nothing else can
run smoothly while it's running, even on computers with fast CPU/large amounts
of RAM. The I/O is often the cause of system slowdown and this needs to be
reduced as much as possible.
I'm sure this issue can be fixed, a background daemon doesn't need to run at
full speed, it can be niced to 19, and internal fixes can be made.

Regardless of your decision whether to decide automatically what to do
or not, I think you should make sure the "remove_hiberfile" option is
interpreted correctly, because it isn't. You should at least be able to

[Bug 1324320] [NEW] Unexpected behavior when launcher and panel opacity are set to 0

2014-05-28 Thread Davide Depau
Public bug reported:

When I set the panel and the launcher opacity to zero, the launcher, even if
transparent, makes the wallpaper a little lighter behind it, and the panel
makes it darker and keeps the blur.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Install and open ccsm
2. Go to Ubuntu Unity Plugin
3. Set launcher or panel opacity to 0.0

I'd expect the panel not to blur the wallpaper, to hide all the shadows
and to be completely transparent, showing only the icons and the text,
and the launcher to also be completely transparent and hide all the
shadows without making the wallpaper look lighter.

See picture for more details.

the PC, open and close quickly the lid) and the PC shut down normally
without suspending. I repeated it three or four times before coming back
here, and it didn't happen again.

[Bug 1197395] Re: /run/user/$ID/pulse owned by root and not by the user

2013-07-31 Thread Davide Depau
> At least it can't be a bug in PulseAudio, because PulseAudio shouldn't
have the permission to create that directory with those permissions,
right?

I agree with you, but what else could make it owned by root? Or PA is started
as root before the DM is started, and maybe it doesn't remove it after
terminating/crashing, or the DM does something nasty...
A workaround could be a script runned *after* login and whitelisted in
/etc/sudoers.d that checks the permissions of that directory.

OK, that's what I'm talking about. I will try the scripts provided in that
bug and check lm-sensors. At the moment I cannot test it as the fan is not
fisically working (it started making strange sounds yesterday and I had to
turn the PC off), and anyway I'm writing from the phone...

It's different: the fan is not just always on (it is always on in any case
because I set an option in the EFI settings); it just starts rotating very very
fast; I've never seen it rotating so fast, even if the PC was very hot; it
happened that the PC turned off because it was too hot and the kernel wasn't
able to make the fan rotate at the right speed.

But after a suspend the sound is like a vacuum machine! :)

[Bug 1203286] [NEW] [HP Probook 4510s] System fan not working correctly after suspend

2013-07-20 Thread Davide Depau
Public bug reported:

I noticed that since Natty or Oneiric (I don't remember precisely) I have a
strange behaviour: after resuming the PC from suspend, the fan starts rotating
too fast, even if the PC is not hot. When I first had the problem, I could
solve it by (dis)connecting the power cable. In latest versions of Ubuntu,
maybe since Precise, this workaround doesn't work anymore.
I have the mainline kernel downloaded from here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc1-saucy/

I attached some logs, I don't know what else I can provide to help
troubleshooting this bug.

I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 amd64.

[Bug 1197311] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP ProBook 4510s] suspend/resume failure

2013-07-18 Thread Davide Depau
It happens also with the new 3.11 kernel. I noticed that I can force
this behavior by opening and closing the lid until it suspends. Also I
noticed that it always wakes up when removing/attaching the power cable,
that sometimes it wakes up automatically after about 2-3 minutes and
that sometimes, after it wakes up, it suspends again, unless the system
has finished shutting down and has sent the shutdown signal.

Re: [Bug 1197311] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP ProBook 4510s] suspend/resume failure

2013-07-15 Thread Davide Depau
The fact that it suspends when I close the lid while shutting down (even if
I disabled any action when closing the lid from system settings) happens
only with saucy.

Instead, the fan always started rotating very fast after suspend since
Natty or Oneiric, I don't remember precisely. I'm quite sure it didn't
happen with Lucid and Maverick.
Moreover, before Precise I was able to restore the fan's normal behavior by
(dis)connecting the charger; since Precise it doesn't work anymore.

I want also to say that the kernel is never able to make the fan rotate as
fast as after suspend, even if the PC is very hot (some times, if I render
some animation with blender or use some 3D video game, it turns off
suddenly and doesn't turn on for a few minutes, because it isn't able to
dissipate the heat).
Another detail: in the first case, when it suspends while shutting down, if
I (dis)connect the charger it wakes up like if I pressed the power button;
sometimes it wakes up even if I don't touch anything, and that's not a
pleasure at midnight while sleeping... ;)

I'm sorry if I didn't explain everything correctly, English is not my
mother language, I'm trying to do the best :)
If something isn't clear I will try to explain it again with other words :)

[Bug 1197395] [NEW] /run/user/$ID/pulse owned by root and not by the user

2013-07-03 Thread Davide Depau
Public bug reported:

I'm experiencing this problem with Ubuntu Saucy. Some times, when I start a
media player (I use Musique), it freezes, as it finds that it cannot write into
/run/user/$ID/pulse.
If I change the owner of that directory to me, the media player starts as usual
and is able to play music.
I've never had this problem with previous versions of Ubuntu.
Someone says that running PulseAudio with the -D argument changes the owner of
that directory, but I didn't try.

This is before manually changing the owner of that directory:
$ musique
Failed to create secure directory (/run/user/1000/pulse): Permission denied+

If I change the owner of that directory to me, the media player starts as

Someone says that running PulseAudio with the -D argument changes the owner

[Bug 1197311] [NEW] [Hewlett-Packard HP ProBook 4510s] suspend/resume failure

2013-07-03 Thread Davide Depau
Public bug reported:

Some times, when I turn off the laptop, I close the lid and it goes to
sleep without finishing shutting down. After a few minutes, it turns
automatically on itself and finishes shutting down. When I turn on the
PC again, it shows an Apport message as soon as I log in.

Moreover, when I suspend it manually and resume it again, the fan starts
rotating too fast until I reboot the PC.

[Bug 1110420] Re: [raring] Mouse disgcharged notifications, Power Indicator are wrong

2013-02-12 Thread Davide Depau
I don't get any notification at all: though the mouse is connected and working,
I don't see anything in the battery indicator.
I have this Bluetooth mouse: http://trust.com/products/product.aspx?artnr=16980
I don't know if this is a problem of the battery indicator or my mouse cannot
check battery status (it uses a standard AA battery).

[Bug 1079440] Re: i945: Random complete freeze using dual monitors

2013-02-10 Thread Davide Depau
This problem affects me too. Sometimes, when I use two monitors in
extended mode, the PC suddenly freezes. When I hover something, the
cursor changes (e.g. if I hover an entry the cursor becomes a "I"), but
if I click, this doesn't happen any more. Also, if I disconnect the
secondary monitor, the primary becomes black. When the screen is not
black, I can however switch to a TTY and try to restart the desktop
manager, but it doesn't show up and I need to restart.

[Bug 1096225] [NEW] Everything freezes after using an application and using "Force quit"

2013-01-04 Thread Davide Depau
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, then upgraded to Raring
Ringtail. I rebooted, then logged into Unity. When I use any application
(e.g. the terminal, Firefox, ecc...), it freezes. After a few seconds it
becomes gray and the dialog "Force quit" appears. When I click "Force
quit", everything freezes: I cannot use keystrokes but I can move the
pointer. I can only switch to a TTY and restart the display manager.
I've tried with GNOME Shell, but the issue occurs again. This doesn't
happen with Fluxbox.

I reported the bug in Unity because I didn't know where to report it.

I noticed that the required files exist, but they are not detected by Python...
For example, /usr/lib/girepository-1.0/Granite-0.1.1.typelib exists;
/usr/share/gir-1.0/Granite.0.1.1.gir exists...

I'm using quantal, and I installed Granite using Elementary Dev PPA.

[Bug 1076393] Re: Unity freezes when a program uses a lot of CPU and I hover an item on the launcher

2012-11-09 Thread Davide Depau
No, they don't. But I think that, when compiz freezes, they continue
responding, but for some reason, compiz (or Xorg, I don't know) doesn't update
they're windows. When the windows become gray and Compiz is still responding,
the windows respond, but when I hover an item on the launcher, it responds, but
immediately compiz freezes and everything stops responding.
But the script that checks memory/CPU usage is run on a terminal: if it really
doesn't respond, the process would be frozen too. But it doesn't, so everything
is due to compiz, I think...

Sorry if I repeated too many times "but", but I'm not English nor
American and I'm still learning it ;)

[Bug 959570] Re: python2.7 assert failure: python: /build/buildd/cairo-1.10.2/src/cairo-surface.c:614: cairo_surface_reference: asserzione \"((*&(&surface->ref_count)->ref_count) > 0)\" non riuscita.

Another one:

(bashkaraoke-gtk-new.py:4417): Gdk-WARNING **: The program
'bashkaraoke-gtk-new.py' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 3962 error_code 1 request_code 0 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 977931] [NEW] APT links with more than one package work only if software center isn't running

2012-04-10 Thread Davide Depau
Public bug reported:

If I try to open an apt link (e.g. apt://firefox), it works (if software-center
ins't running, it starts and shows the package).
But if I try to open a link with more than one package (e.g.
apt://firefox,chromium-browser,rhythmbox) it works only if it is not running:
if it is already running, it shows a message saying that the package I'm
searching can not be found in the repositories.

1) Release: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin
2) Version: software-center 5.1.14.1
3) I expected a list of packages
4) A message saying "Not found" appeared

[Bug 197269] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in free()

2012-04-10 Thread Davide Depau
I had this error in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but I can't remember what I was doing
when it occurred.
This appens quite often: the mouse freezes and I see LightDM again.
