[Bug 1684857] [NEW] Virtualbox consumes very high cpu after host suspend (macos host, ubuntu client)

2017-04-20 Thread Declan McGrath
Public bug reported:

Note: I *think* this used to happened when I used Ubuntu as the host as
well. Though I never tested the workaround with that combination.

1. Macos (El Capitan) host, Ubuntu running XFCE guest with xscreensaver
configured as the screensaver

2. Lock Macos host (Cmd-Shift-Power Off)

3. Leave long enough for the guest's xscreensaver to kick in

4. Virtualbox reports about 150% cpu in the MacOS Task Manager.

5. After careful experimentation, I discovered that this was due
xscreensaver kicking in when I had been away

Tip: You can short-circuit steps 2 and 3 by running "xscreensaver-
command -activate" in the guest OS.

[Bug 1392664] Re: Interacting with meld very slow (clicking, typing)

2014-12-05 Thread Declan McGrath
Just to note, I upgraded to Gnome 2.14 via the PPA approach and this
fixed all my slow issues with gedit, meld and related applications.

I followed these instructions http://ubuntuportal.com/2014/11/how-to-
upgrade-gnome-3-12-to-gnome-3-14-in-ubuntu-gnome-14-10.html

I am not suggesting that people should upgrade via this PPA - just
noting in case it helps someone.

I have found that gedit is similarly slow. Hence this is not a meld-

[Bug 1392664] [NEW] Interacting with meld very slow (clicking, typing)

2014-11-14 Thread Declan McGrath
Public bug reported:

Configuration
* Meld 3.12.0
* Ubuntu 14.10
* Gnome 3 (GNOME Shell 3.12.2)

Overview
* Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.10 meld is very slow (1-2 second lag) when I
click menus and type text. Basically if I do anything.
* It is not a big set of files I am comparing - the same set used to be very
fast.
* Meld is unusable as a result.

To reproduce
* Just use meld to compare 2 small directories and try clicking on a few
different options in the file menu. It will be very laggy.

Other information
* Other GTK apps, such as the GIMP do not suffer this slow down so I believe
this is a meld-specific bug.

[Bug 264275] Re: bazaar internal error if adding file in a linked directory

2010-08-14 Thread Declan McGrath
Hi Andrew, good to hear that the core problem leading to this is being
fixed. I presume the recent work would supersede the work I did on my
branch. If there still needs to be work done to fix the problem at a
higher level, closer to the command line user interface, then it may be
possible for me to grab some work from my branch to give the user a
better error message. (I haven't done any recent work on this fix as I
didn't get any answers to my last post at
https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~declanmg/bzr/264275-fix/+merge/15175)
Hopefully Martin and John's work will fix this bug entirely but if not
then let me know and I'll check out the lp:bzr/2.0 branch and have a
look.

[Bug 264275] Re: bazaar internal error if adding file in a linked directory

2010-05-04 Thread Declan McGrath
Hi,

I'm the person that submitted the patch. The last activity on it was
just before Christmas when I submitted a request for feedback on the
merge proposal (as can be seen in the last comment of the merge
proposal). As far as I can remember, I don't think I got any feedback
too unfortunately I got busy with other things at the time and didn't
get a chance to go back to the patch and help drive towards an
acceptable fix.

I'd like to return to working on it next week (if someone else wants to
do it then let me know by posting below). It would be great if my last
post at
https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~declanmg/bzr/264275-fix/+merge/15175
could be replied to before I start working on it.

All the best,
Declan

[Bug 483044] Re: Cannot debug mono application (f-spot) using mdb due to missing debug library (glib-sharp.dll.mdb)

2009-11-15 Thread Declan McGrath
Basically, it appears that a package containing debug symbols for is
missing

I found the following tool very useful to search for what package an expected
file is in
* sudo aptitude install apt-file
* sudo apt-file update
* apt-file search glib-sharp.dll.mdb

This search produces no results, whereas the following shows packages that do
provide mdb files
* apt-files search .mdb

Running apt-file search glib-sharp.dll returns 'libglib2.0-cil' as the
package that provides mono with glib functionality so my question is:

*** Is there a debug version of the package glib-sharp.dll? ***

[Bug 264275] Re: bazaar internal error if adding file in a linked directory

2009-11-08 Thread Declan McGrath
Update
* Firstly, thanks for the feedback Andrew
* I have refined the code and added appropriate tests to test_add.py under the
blackbox tests
* I chose to leave my changes at the builtins.py level (thus making the changes
subject to blackbox tests rather than unit tests) as, with my current
knowledge, they fit best under the tree_files_for_add() method rather than
somewhere deeper in the core of bazaar. Please advise where to move code to if
this is incorrect.
* I would now like to know is there anything else I need to do? Or can this
changeset be formally submitted and a start made on getting this bug resolved?

What does this fix do?
* The changes on my branch prevent the add command from adding anything (files,
sym-links or directories) that lives under a sym-linked folder whose target is
outside the working tree.

What code changes are there?
* When adding something via the add command, we ensure that the realpath of its
parent directory lives under the basedir of the repository. If not then
addition is not allowed and a user-friendly error message displayed.

Some areas to focus on when reviewing these changes
* Is there anything in there that could have a detrimental impact on
performance?
* Is this the correct layer of the code to target the fix (or should it be
pushed deeper)?
* Are there any extra conditions I could add to correctly cater for OSes that
don't support sym-links?
* Are there any other obvious test cases not covered by the blackbox tests?

What tests are included
* 3 blackbox tests have been added
  - Adding a file under a symlinked dir inside the working copy
  - Adding a file under a symlinked dir outside the working copy
  - Adding a symlink under a symlinked dir outside the working copy

[Bug 264275] Re: bazaar internal error if adding file in a linked directory

2009-10-31 Thread Declan McGrath
I have updated my branch and added a python test (as opposed to bash
script test) to bzrlib/tests/blackbox/test_add_symlink_wip.py however I
get a return code error:

AssertionError: Unexpected return code
not equal:
a = 0
b = 3

Some questions
1) Can someone please advise how to let the test know that a non-zero error
code is expected?
2) I plan to move this to a Unit test + errors.py test (rather than a Blackbox
test) as per the 'Testing exceptions and errors' of
http://doc.bazaar-vcs.org/developers/testing.html. Is this the correct thing to
do?
3) I think the fix is pretty much on the right track at the moment - checking
if the the folders above (but not including) the path being bzr add'ed are
symlinks to a directory not under the working copy. I would appreciate any
other feedback concerning how the fix is implemented.

Please note: I have not run the full test suite yet. I will do so later
today and start to look at any failures.

Thanks again for the feedback to date,
Declan

[Bug 264275] Re: bazaar internal error if adding file in a linked directory

2009-10-18 Thread Declan McGrath
Thanks for the feedback, which I am currently using to help my updated
implementation. My approach will be:

For any file/directory asked to be added
  - Get the osutils.realpath() of its parent directory and ensure that this is
inside [ie. osutils.is_inside()] the osutils.realpath() of the tree.basedir
  - If not then raise an ContentsUnderSymLinkedDirectoryOutsideTreeNotSupported
error

Note: This alogrithm has now been implemented in my branch but I have yet to
test it properly - and it seems to be raising the error twice for some unknown
reason.

I think I will be able to add a proper test to the blackbox tests for this soon.

[Bug 412182] [NEW] System crashed when update-manager called for the first time after fresh install upon setting up notification-daemon

2009-08-11 Thread Declan McGrath
Public bug reported:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
* Installed Ubuntu Studio 9.04 on a 20 Gigabyte partition of a Dell Inspiron
1520
  - During the install I had a wired LAN connection autoconfigured successfully
  - I selected the audio workstation and LDPSI plugins options (ie. 2 out of
the 4 options for Ubuntu Studio)
* Called update-manager for the first time
* Updates proceeded until I got a crash which completely hung my system
* I think the updating information at the time said something like 'setting up
notification-daemon'
* I was able to use Alt-Ctrl-F1 through to F4 to get to the shells
  - I could type my username and press return on each of the shells but then
they would hang too
  - I tried this in a few of the shells (ie. F1, F2, F4)
  - Upon pressing Alt-Ctrl-F7 then I got a completely black screen and could
never return to the F1 to F4 shells again
  - I tried Alt-Ctrl-Del and Alt-Ctrl-Backspace but nothing happened
  - I tried to power off the machine by holding down the power button for less
than 3 seconds but this would not work
* Upon logging back in I now have a very ugly looking desktop - big square
buttons - so the desktop widgets must have fallen back to some old windowing or
something
* When I look at /var/log/apt/term.log the last few lines read

the system actually crashed when it was setting up metacity - ie.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
* This problem happened before. I was carrying out this reinstall in the hope
of fixing it. Thus it seems to be reproduceable. I am willing to reproduce it
again if you need me to
* Previously I would encountered crashed quite frequently - especially when
using Audacity
* My previous installation was pretty new too - I'd only being using it for a
few days

[Bug 227439] Re: kmail random high cpu usage during fetching mail

2009-07-27 Thread Declan McGrath
* I get the same problem running Kubuntu 9.04 with KDE 4.2.2 and Kmail
version 1.11.2.

* I realised that it was the mail checking when I switched off Interval Mail
Checking
  - It is definitely the checking of mail causing a problem for me
  - At least switching off interval checking let control when my CPU would go
haywire

* I have seen this problem once or twice before - perhaps 2 months ago
for a week or two. Then one day the usual daily Kubuntu software update
fixed it

* It's a very frustrating problem, especially as it has recurred for me
so soon. I would be happy to send on logs and help out

* Thanks again for alll the great KDE 4 work. Looks great - other than
this bug :-)
