[Bug 1368149] [NEW] "File not found" on attempt to browse windows shares

2014-09-11 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

On a freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04.1:

* Open Nautilus
* Choose "Browse Network" in the sidebar
* Double-click on "Windows Network"

Instead of displaying computers in the network, Nautilus reproducibably
displays the following error message (guessing a bit because I am using
the German version):

"Failed to retrieve share list from server: File or directory not found"

This happens on both my Ubuntu laptop and desktop PC, every time.

[Bug 1131664] Re: The default apps should have standard menubars under Unity

2014-02-07 Thread Denis Washington
The evince 3.10.3-0ubuntu3 update does indeed cause keyboard shortcuts
to not work in non-Unity desktops (more specifically, I tested in GNOME
Shell, and even basic shortcuts such as Crtl+O do nothing now.)

Also, it is not possible to leave presentation mode now by simply
pressing F5 or Esc. In fact, I found no other way than to close Evince
completely without quitting it altogether with Alt+F4.

[Bug 1131664] Re: The default apps should have standard menubars under Unity

2013-12-16 Thread Denis Washington
Patch against the current development release (3.10.1ubuntu1). This
patch is different from the previous Evince patches in the following
ways:

* It uses the "gtk-shell-show-app-menu" and "gtk-shell-show-menubar"
settings, which should make it work correctly in any desktop
environment.

* It slightly updates the Evince 3.6 menu structure to more closely
resemble the new action menus (i.e. subtle differences in separator
placement and item ordering).

To complete this work, some translations from 3.6 would need to be
ported to 3.10 as they don't exist anymore (e.g. for the top-level menu
labels "File", "Edit", "View" and "Go"), but I don't really have the
expertise to do this so I left it alone for now.

** Patch added: "Evince menubar resurrection"

[Bug 1261121] [NEW] Connecting an external display doesn't enable it automatically

2013-12-15 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 13.04, connecting an external monitor to my Thinkpad T420
(Intel HD 3000 graphics) causes the monitor to be automatically enabled,
and the desktop extended to it. On the other hand, 13.10 and the 14.04
development release don't do this anymore. Instead, I need to open the
System Settings, after which the external monitor is suddenly recognized
(without changing a setting, or even going into the Displays panel). It
would be great if this were automatic again.

[Bug 1160272] [NEW] Cannot add IM account (empty setup dialog)

2013-03-26 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to Raring, I cannot add any IM accounts (such as ICQ or

[Bug 1122888] [NEW] Export scripts fail with a ValueError on Python 3.3

2013-02-12 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

Whenever I try to export a scene to, say, an .obj file in Blender
running under Ubuntu 13.04, I get the following exception:

File "/usr/lib/blender/scripts/addons/io_scene_obj/__init__.py", line 328,

Research suggests that this could be due to to this Python 3.3 issue:
http://bugs.python.org/issue15610 . As the fix for this bug is a change
to a macro expansion, I guess a simple rebuild of the blender package
would fix the problem.

[Bug 761093] Re: Unity says "Home Folder" no matter where I am

2013-02-02 Thread Denis Washington
The launcher icon and title top-bar title should simply be called
"Files", which is also how Nautilus calls itself in the About dialog and
menus. In the 3.6 version shipped with Raring, it's even more confusing
as the top-bar app menu consists only of a single item which, if opened
with the "Home Folder" launcher, is also named "Home Folder" - again,
regardless of the folder you are actually in.

[Bug 1077829] Re: ASUS Xonar U3 volume slider problem

2012-12-14 Thread Denis Washington
I have reported the problem upstream (in the alsa-devel list) and
submitted the S/PDIF patch found in
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.alsa.user/36816/focus=36820. Since
then, Linus has merged the change for the 3.8-rc1 kernel:

https://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=commit;h=046e7d685bc370fd4c879ab6635ad3f69e6673d1
https://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=commit;h=1d31affbef40cea4958da03cf6ec3cea1c7f801e

Considering the change is trivial and this USB sound card model seems to
be relatively popular, it might be worth to backport it. I'm using it on
Ubuntu 12.10 (self compiled 3.5.0-19-generic Ubuntu kernel) for quite a
while without problems.

I need to take this back: I installed the Xonar U3 driver under Windows

[Bug 1077829] [NEW] ASUS Xonar U3 volume slider problem

2012-11-11 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

I got an ASUS Xonar U3 USB sound card for my Thinkpad T420 for my
birthday this year and tried to use it on Ubuntu 12.10. Unfortunately,
its sound output is either bearably noticeable or - if I increase the
volume by even the slightest notch with the audio indicator - EXTREMELY
loud (and, because I use earphones, pretty painfully so).

I did some experiments with alsamixer, and it seems as if the complete
volume range that I would expect to be stretched over the complete
slider is compressed in the PCM levels between 1 and ~7. This means the
only way I can sanefully use the USB sound card right now is by turning
the volume in each application very, very low so that I have some amount
of precision with the global volume slider (which I can control with
function keys), but every time I forget this somewhere, it's a pretty
painful surprise, so I hope this can be fixed.

[Bug 1002648] [NEW] German Software Center reports all prices in USD

2012-05-21 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 (when it was in Beta) in German and thus
expect the prices listed in the Software Center to appear in Euros.
However, they all are shown in USD, which seems wrong.

The "workaround" allows Eclipse to be started, but breaks all language

installed, seem to be available.)

[Bug 948373] [NEW] Overlay scrollbars of unfocused windows may be hidden by other windows

2012-03-06 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

Reproduce as follows:

1. Open an Evince window with a document open that requires scrolling, maximize
it to the left half of the screen.
2. Maximize any other window to the right screen half, and make sure it is
focused.
3. Move the cursor to the scrollbar area of the Evince window without changing
the window focus.
4. See that the overlay scrollbar appears underneath the window on the right
half.

I guess the overlay scrollbar popup should be always-on-top to prevent
such situations.

[Bug 919570] [NEW] Appearance of maximized windows makes menubar ownership amiguous

2012-01-21 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

Currently (with Unity 5.0 on Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha), maximizing a window
leads to the window being visually merged with the top bar. This makes
sense as long as the maximized window is focused, as the title and menus
shown in the top bar are the ones belonging to the window. However,
focusing an unmaximized window while having a maximized window open
leads to the unfortunate situation that the top bar shows the
title/menubar of the unmaximized window, while the visuals suggest that
they actually belong to the maximized one. (The attached image shows the
problem.)

Thus, it would be good if an unmaximized window and the top bar only
appeared as a single visual unit while the window is focused, and less
connected if not, to make window title / menubar ownership clear and
less confusing.

[Bug 918041] [NEW] Default GRUB menu entries are overly technical

2012-01-17 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

The names of the entries added to a typical Ubuntu-Windows dual-boot
GRUB menu are meaningless, if not even uncomforting and confusing to the
average user. For instance, my Ubuntu 12.04 alpha install has the
following entries:

Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-9-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-9-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-8-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-8-generic (recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1)

which is problematic in several ways:

- The kernel versions that we show in the Ubuntu entries do not at all
relate to anything that we present to an average user in the rest of the
system ("what is a kernel anyway?").

- There are multiple Ubuntus to choose from, with the average user not
really knowing what the difference should be. ("Why do I have multiple
Ubuntus now?" / "Why keep these old versions if there is a newer one?")

- The memory test entries are not useful most of the time, but still
very visibly clutter the boot menu and make it more tedious to select
the secondary operating system entries beneath them.

- The Windows entry has a "(loader)" suffix appended which seemingly
signifies that it boots from a separate boot partition (as is the
default case for Windows Vista and 7), but is absolutely needless
information to the user.

Ideally, the menu would look something like this:

Ubuntu 12.04
Ubuntu 12.04 (recovery mode)
Windows 7

or, including the second newest kernel version:

Ubuntu 12.04
Ubuntu 12.04 (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 12.04 (last known good)
Windows 7

[Bug 103306] Re: compiz eats mouse clicks at the border of the screen

2009-06-19 Thread Denis Washington
@The Fiddler: The bhavior you mentioned doesn't have to do with the
screen border issue. It is also triggered with a maximized window under
a top panel when you move the pointer right on the line between the top
panel and the window title. So this seems to be another bug (mayb of
compiz' gtk-window-decorator?) unrelated to this one. (As it is there in
the default configuration, it might actually apply as a papercut.)

To make it clear: the Localization Preferences dialog was unfunctional
because nothing was implemented yet. It also won't make it for GNOME
2.22, so we don't build it anymore since 2.21.5 (released today). So
when you update to that version, the non-functional dialog will be gone.

[Bug 157099] Automatic installation of DVD CSS support

2007-10-25 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu can install missing gstreamer codecs for some time, which is
really a pleasent feature. Thanks to everyone who made this possible!
However, when attempting to play a DVD with CSS encryption, Totem still
just tells the user that it doesn't support it and offers no auto-
installation of the missing libdvdcss. As DVD support is incredibly
important for a desktop Linux distro, I propose to also add auto-
installation facilities for CSS decryption support (naturally
accompanied by the usual copyright-related warnings). A script for doing
this could for instance launch install-css.sh from the libdvdread3
package.

[Bug 157015] Refresh rate settings

2007-10-25 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

In the (very well-made) article "Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) Pragmatic Visual
Presentation Critique", it is stated that compiz' effects lack
smoothness at times (using an nvidia card). A commenter proposed the
following workaround, which seemed to work for them (cite):

"The solution: go to General Options in the CompizConfig Settings
Manager. Under the Display Settings tab, uncheck “Detect refresh rate”,
set the “Refresh rate” slider as far as it will go (to 200), and check
“Sync to VBlank”."

If this helps (it showed no difference with my machine, but I'm using an
ATI card) and causes no regression for other cards, it should be the
default settings for future ubuntu releases (and maybe also backported
to 7.10).

[Bug 136584] Re: Disk metaphor for "save" icon is out-dated

2007-09-14 Thread Denis Washington
Here is a link to the Tango save icon:
http://webcvs.freedesktop.org/tango/tango-icon-theme/32x32/actions/document-save.png?view=co

And here the one from gnome-icon-theme (SVG):
http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gnome-icon-theme/trunk/scalable/actions/document-save.svg

Note that hard disks as icons are already used in the Human icon theme,
like for partitions and the "File System" place, so users probably are
or get used to the association with their saved data.

[Bug 139577] "dodge" effect highly distracting

2007-09-14 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy for a while now, and what really annoys me is
that, even for "Normal Effects", the default focus animation is "dodge".
While this effect might be somewhat cool if not used on day-by-day
basis, it always feels like much too much movement for the subtle bling
that Ubuntu's default configuration should have.

I would propose to only enable dodge on "Extra Effects" and use
something less obvious for "Normal Effects", like fade or maybe even no
effect. I think a lot of people will be distracted or thrown off by the
dodge effect.

[Bug 136584] Disk metaphor for "save" icon is out-dated

2007-09-01 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: human-icon-theme

The current "save" icon in Ubuntu is still a floppy disk, which seems
outdated in 2007; only few mordern desktop PCs ora laptops have floppy
drives these days. The GNOME and Tango icon themes already use a hard
disk with an arrow pointing onto them; this seems more appopriate for a
modern desktop. The Human theme could contain the Tango icon with Human-
specific arrow color changes.

[Bug 116985] libpoppler update conflicts with evince

2007-05-26 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

After the newest update, libpoppler1-glib has been renamed to
libpoppler-glib1. The evince package hasn't been updated to reflect this
change and thus cannot be installed anymore.

[Bug 88815] Re: Sluggish rendering since xorg 7.2 update

2007-04-03 Thread Denis Washington
I just updated to the new libx11-6 package and rebooted, but my
performance is still horrible when I am using EXA (i use the "radeon"
driver with an ATI Radeon 9600 XT). Could this be a driver bug?

[Bug 82458] gnome-cups-manager's .desktop file should be in /usr/share/applications

2007-01-31 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-cups-manager

Currently gnome-cups-manager's .desktop file is installed in /usr/share
/control-center-2.0/capplets/. Following the freedesktop standards, it
should be installed in /usr/share/applications. This happens upstream,
but it seems as if the ubuntu package uses it's own .desktop file. This
could be dropped in favor of the upstream one.

[Bug 75957] Re: [feisty] [usability] categorization in the gnome-control-center needs to be more fine grained

2007-01-21 Thread Denis Washington
This bug is obsolete as upstream moved to a more categorized control
center shell in GNOME 2.17.5.

[Bug 80851] hal-device-manager should be in the control center's "Hardware" category

2007-01-21 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal-device-manager

Currently, hal-device-manager is listed in the control center's "System"
category. It would be much more appropriate for hal-device-manager to be
listed in the "Hardware" category (this would require adding
"HardwareSettings" to the categories defined in the .desktop file).

[Bug 59940] Error in get_changelog

2006-09-11 Thread Denis Washington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

With edgy, I always experienced the problem that update-manager wasn't
able to download the changelogs of the packages. Today I finally got
myself to look at the problem. I looked at the console output and found
this:

  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/UpdateManager/UpdateManager.py", line
162, in get_changelog
l = string.split(srcver,":")
UnboundLocalError: local variable 'srcver' referenced before assignment

I looked at the code and found the mistake in a code block that was
supposed to get the source version of the package and compare it to the
binary version. All code paths should actually assign some value to
srcver because it is used afterwards, but one was forgotten: on line
142, there is:

if srcrec:
srcver = ...

The problem: there is no "else" clause. The code should become

if srcrec:
srcver = ...
else:
srcver = binver # the fallback used in the rest of the code

After this change, the changelog downloading worked without any problems
on my machine. Could this be patched upstream?
