[Bug 291878] Re: Notebook Volume Up/Down Buttons Misbehaving
I can confirm this bug with 32 bit 8.10 upgraded from 7.10 (iteratively upgraded from 7.10 -> 8.04 -> 8.10) on a HP Pavilion ZV6233nr. The multimedia keys did work properly in 7.10. I do not know if they would have worked in 8.04. RE: Elias, these are not separate issues. Panels & apps work fine until MM key is pressed (either vol up/down or mute). Then behavior as described and Panels & some apps cease accepting mouse clicks. It seems that MM key driver (where ever that is) is repeatedly sending volume up/down events, even though MM key was released. The only way I have found to "reset" the problem (other than cold boot) is Alt-Ctrl-Del then logout and re-login. This issue is a major inconvenience. While volume can be adjusted via GUI normally, forgetting not to use MM keys requires logout/in for system to operate usably again. Hello, Gauvain. You are absolutely correct! Please note that this bug was originally posted on Feb. 23, 2008. It is now 4 mos. later, with no proper fix. There are many who do not have a working native Xfce terminal. My goal was to a) help the process along by identifying the area of code with the problem, and b) create a clean build so that I can run a local copy of terminal until a proper fix is released. I leave it for someone else to fix the actual problem. [Bug 194769] Re: xfce4-terminal window borders / decorations / widgets being incorrectly drawn (xubuntu 8.04)
No, Dennis B., you do not need to recompile your kernel to make this work, but you do need to download and unpack the original 0.2.8 terminal source into your home directory: $ cd ~ $ wget http://www.ca-us.xfce.org/archive/xfce-4.4.2/src/Terminal-0.2.8.tar.bz2 $ bunzip Terminal-0.2.8.tar.bz2 $ tar xvf Terminal-0.2.8.tar Then apply the patch: $ patch -p0 < Terminal-0.2.8-patch2 Change to the top level source directory, config & make: $ cd Terminal-0.2.8 $ ./configure $ make If you get errors in any of the above steps, you are probably missing some packages & libraries you need. Do "sudo apt-get install" for each missing package (or use synaptic). I know you will need at least build- essential. If you get an error during "make", you probably need to install the package "gettext". Once you get a good build: $ cd terminal $ ./terminal You should have a clean terminal running now. Notice that you are running a local (not system wide) copy. Nobody answered my question yet about how to make this change system wide without compromising package management. -- xfce4-terminal window borders / decorations / widgets being incorrectly drawn (xubuntu 8.04) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194769 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

BTWto whomever is responsible for the XFCE terminal, perhaps the compositing code should be *completely* removed for the next version. [Bug 194769] Re: xfce4-terminal window borders / decorations / widgets being incorrectly drawn (xubuntu 8.04)
Ok...Wife & child are out of the country, so spent Father's Day digging into this problem. To preface this post, I am *not* a hacker, but I am an engineer and have some analytical abilities. Really, though, I ain't a clue as to what I am doing. First, I when through the XFCE archives to find the rev history of the terminal. Then I downloaded a few of the revisions and built them to see if a) did the problem always exist, and b) if not, when did start. It turns out that while 0.2.5.8rc2 from xfce-4.3.99.2 (released 5-nov-06) does *not* have the problem, 0.2.6 from xfce-4.4.0 (released 21-jan-07) does have the problem. I ran a diff on the two source trees (attached) and found that there are 13 occurrences in some of the source files in 0.2.6 that have the following sequence of code: #if GTK_CHECK_VERSION(2,10,0) some code #endif It seems that building against GTK 2.10 (or later?) adds some additional code for compositing (this was my original suspicion). As a test, I when through each file of 0.2.6 and changed the code (*please*, someone teach me how to use sed!) so the #if test would always fail, recompiled, and, lo and behold, the problem dissappeared! I have not tried this with 0.2.8 yet, that is next on my list. But the problem definitely seems to be related to window transparencies. I think there are two possibilities: #1) There is a problem with the GTK library with respect to the MediaMagic graphic controllers. This seems most likely, as we are the only ones experience the problem; #2) There is a problem with the way the terminal code calls the GTK library with respect to compositing, and only the MediaMagic hardware is sensitive to it. This does not seem likely. This shouldn't be too hard for a decent hacker, there are only about 20-30 lines of code in question. Any way to kick this to the GTK guys? I will continue my investigation to see if I can come up with anything else. ** Attachment added: "diff Terminal-0.2.5.8rc2 to 0.2.6" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15340193/diff%20Terminal-0.2.5.8rc2%20to%200.2.6 -- xfce4-terminal window borders / decorations / widgets being incorrectly drawn (xubuntu 8.04) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194769 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Install went ok, and required 34M total in /boot (resulting free space in /boot 32M). $ ls -l /boot total 53904 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 286242 2006-12-05 17:42 abi-2.6.17-10-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 286242 2007-03-13 19:46 abi-2.6.17-11-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 411006 2007-04-15 04:01 abi-2.6.20-15-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 75289 2006-12-05 15:38 config-2.6.17-10-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 75289 2007-03-13 17:42 config-2.6.17-11-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 83269 2007-04-15 01:04 config-2.6.20-15-386 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root1024 2007-04-21 12:37 grub -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8194940 2007-04-21 12:06 initrd.img-2.6.17-10-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6813486 2007-01-30 02:33 initrd.img-2.6.17-10-386.bak -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8196815 2007-04-21 12:35 initrd.img-2.6.17-11-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6884087 2007-04-21 00:49 initrd.img-2.6.17-11-386.bak -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8246870 2007-04-21 12:49 initrd.img-2.6.20-15-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8245139 2007-04-21 12:37 initrd.img-2.6.20-15-386.bak drwx-- 2 root root 12288 2005-05-31 18:04 lost+found -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 94600 2006-10-20 07:44 memtest86+.bin -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 713661 2006-12-05 17:42 System.map-2.6.17-10-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 714815 2007-03-13 19:46 System.map-2.6.17-11-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 789067 2007-04-15 04:03 System.map-2.6.20-15-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1574463 2006-12-05 17:42 vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1574521 2007-03-13 19:46 vmlinuz-2.6.17-11-386 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1677036 2007-04-15 04:01 vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-386 I didn't look in /boot prior to upgrade, but it looks like the installer made backup copies of *all* existing initrd.img. Otherwise, the total install should have taken around 11 or 12M. Until now, I have always made a small /boot partition. [Bug 107858] Re: 7.04 Distribution Upgrade Installer aborts with "Not Enough Free Space" error.
So7.04 requires at least 40M on /boot to install? Sounds strange...I'll free some space, give it a try, and report back.
