[Bug 147707] Re: Driver and firmware for Afatech AF9005-based DVB sticks missing
OK, I tested with the Kubuntu (KDE 4) Alpha 6 Live CD. The required modules are indeed included and load just fine. I was not able to determine whether the firmware was installed or available in some package, however, or actually test the DVB stick. But I'm sure it will work, however I might have to manually throw in the firmware file. -- Driver and firmware for Afatech AF9005-based DVB sticks missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147707 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The usplash.conf fix worked wonders on my Toshiba Satellite 1900-101 notebook with Kubuntu Gutsy where the splashscreen was not visible and bootup was a 4 minute crawl. In usplash.conf the set resolution was 1280x1024 while the notebook's native resolution is 1024x768. Maybe updating the initrd fs is not even necessary because I could already see the shutdown splash screen as soon as I had edited usplash.conf and restarted. [Bug 127173] Re: strange Xorg screen blanking control after resume from suspend to disk
Confirmed on my both desktops AND my laptop, all running Kubuntu Gutsy. After hibernation/suspend-to-disk, the screen regularly goes blank after about ~5 minutes without user input. The screen just blanks, without the monitor going on standby. A mouse move unblanks the screen. Disabling/tweaking any powersaving related options in system-settings doesn't change the situation. Yes, but someone has to add the missing firmware to it :-) I just noticed the tda1004x firmwares are not downloadable from linuxtv.org anymore for whatever reason. As an ex-Mandriva user I know that Penguin Liberation Front maintains various up-to-date firmware packages from where the files could be extracted. [Bug 103163] Re: Unable to commit changes
Hello blackgravity, I'm glad to offer some help for "noobs" here :-) When some "cryptic" command is posted on a Linux forum etc., it just means you must input (or copy and paste) that command into a terminal window. The terminal is a program that lets you communicate with the operating system via written commands instead of clicking on things. In Kubuntu, you can open a terminal window by opening the K-Menu (where the programs are), going to the submenu "System" and clicking on "Konsole". A black window that is mostly empty and waiting for keyboard input should appear. Copy and paste (via right-click menu) the following there: sudo dpkg --configure -a Maybe you have to press Enter to tell it you are finished with the input, and it will ask you for your password and then execute the command, which continues the interrupted installation run. -- Unable to commit changes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/103163 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 17878] Re: hard disk being accessed every 4 sec.
Confirmed on my desktop with Kubuntu Gutsy. 20 or so seconds after the KDE desktop has appeared and there is still a lot of hard disk activity, it starts clicking like crazy, but without slowing down the system considerably, and after 2 or 3 minutes enters the well-known state where clicking occures every 5 seconds. After 15-20 minutes, clicking becomes infrequent and in most cases stops a few minutes later. Load cycle count of the disk is not exceptionally high (I checked that of course), but the seek and read error rates are insane. I have a Hitachi hard disk too. As you might know, these are the successors to the infamous IBM "Deathstar" series which had a very bad disk-destroying clicking problem that could be fixed (mostly too late) by a firmware update. So I wonder whether Hitachi HD's need special treatment in terms of power management to not wear out too quickly. I'm not affected on other distributions BTW and the ugly -B 254 fix doesn't do anything for me. -- hard disk being accessed every 4 sec. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/17878 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
I agree with you, treetaxi. This is the ultimate cause that blocks fixing the bug. Missing games and other vendor support are only symptoms of this. Hardware and software vendors will mostly ignore us desktop- wise until Linux is a driving force there, i.e. a good sales target. Because everybody thinks there is no money in desktop Linux, and Shuttleworth hasn't started a massive worldwide ad campaign yet, we are left with our grassroots work. We know it can work because grassroots activism made Firefox insanely popular. We must make *buntu known enough to the public that you can read about it all over the web (not only on tech sites), and finally in the mainstream news. I recommend setting up some professionally made viral videos and placing them on youtube. That would be a good start to draw a significant amount of general attention to *buntu. As a KDE zealot, I also emphasize that we stress there are several editions of Ubuntu, or make separate videos for the different Buntus :-) We could, no, should, also start a campaign demanding that hardware vendors should mention Linux in the system requirements on the box when there is clearly Linux support for that hardware. The vendor just has to shove in a live CD or consult a HCL for that, so it's not much effort needed on his side. We must do everything to increase the Linux user base, because it will mean more people working on the rough edges that are left and irritate new users, more software packagers and bug fixers, more commercial software/games, more people that don't get an irritated look when we start talking Linux and more pressure on MS to adhere to open standards. We can only win, we know that, but progress is AWFULLY slow when we limit ourselves to mouth-to-mouth propaganda and reinstalling a few PCs here and there. We need some sort of central voice and viral marketing. That's where it all starts. -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
This bug is so widespread in Germany that you even can't get Macs in normal stores. Smaller stores will happily build you a custom PC without an OS, though, but this will involve an additional service fee. The only way to get a Linux-powered PC in Germany is through Dell. I have been working on this bug since about 2 years, but only managed to fix it on my girlfriend's PC and some other 35 PCs that were sorted out at my workplace, had no Windows license but shouldn't be sold naked, either. I have not been informed about where those PCs went and how many of the receivers reinstalled it with some weird proprietary stuff, so I can not give accurate status numbers here. Apparently my success was very limited given the effort, but because this bug is a severe show-stopper, I will continue to work on an effective fix until I see satisfying results. -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
