Are you talking about hibernation or sleep/s3 ? I have the same laptop

hibernation, I needed a small - but not easy to find out - tweak to make
hibernation work well.

[Bug 1297421] [NEW] Sound stops working occasionally on Latitude E7440

2014-03-25 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

Sound stops(and starts) working from time to time with no definitive
cause, it usually doesn't happen while something is playing so this
makes it harder to find the cause.

It happened once after resume from suspend(STR), restarting fixed it.
Another time it happened after unplugging the AC adapter and turning on the
hardware WiFi button, suspending to RAM and resuming fixed it.

[Bug 617649] Re: [VIA ID 440] Recording doesn't work with VIA VT1818

2010-08-13 Thread Diaa Sami
The problem was partially fixed when I followed the steps in Bug
#474359, installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic and purged
linux-sound-base, alsa-base, alsa-utils then reinstalled them.

front mic still doesn't work but things are much better, I see multiple
playback and recording channels and the ordinary mic works.

[Bug 614984] Re: ASUS MA487TD EVO - ATI SB850 - VIA VT1818 - Linux does not sees external toslink spdif output

2010-08-13 Thread Diaa Sami
I have *probably* the same card(currently it shows up as VIA VT1818S but mobo
manual says it's VT1818) and a similar mobo: ASUS MA487TD/USB3.
I had several problems with sound(mic not working, no channels showing up, chip
identified as VIA ID 440) until I followed the steps in the comments of Bug
#474359, now I can say 2 SPDIF channels in alsamixer, you might want to try
this solution.

2009-12-02 Thread Diaa Sami
I've just reproduced it again on my laptop, did u make a directory with
the same name as above?

here is what I did:
$ cd /tmp
$ mkdir 2k5\ Express\ line+SPs

And then I get the following output after waiting for a while.
No matches for: `external command', `executable file or directory', `builtin
command', `shell function', `alias', `suffix alias', `reserved word', `job',
`parameter', `directory after cdablevar', or `corrections'

[Bug 490151] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Upgrade libfribidi to 0.19.x

2009-11-29 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libfribidi0

Not only is it highly recommended by the author to upgrade to this version but
also it fixes Arabic shaping issues in subtitles for several video players such
as VLC and MPlayer(as well as other apps using FriBiDi)
According to the official website This release is fairly API/ABI compatible
with the 0.10 series. The Fedora project simply upgraded to 0.19 series from
0.10 without any compatibility issues. Using this version instead of 0.10
series is highly recommended.

I have compiled and installed it manually on my system with no problems.

well, unfortunately - for this bug - I changed my hardware(Intel

hardware but I tried on my laptop and I think it happens, a certain file

auto mounted and 19s when manually mounted.

[Bug 413845] [NEW] Network adapter disappears after resume from STR

2009-08-14 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

I have a 4 years old laptop with Kubuntu 9.04 installed with all updates.
After resuming from STR, both the wired and wireless network adapters
disappear, they don't show up when I run the command 'ifconfig -a'.
After some investigation I found that the b44(which is responsible for the
wired network adapter AFAIK) module is not there after resume, so when I load
it using the command 'sudo modprobe b44' it shows up again and I'm able to use
it.

I have attached the output of 'lspci -vv' as well as 'hwinfo'

[Bug 341095] [NEW] [Jaunty] Scanning partitions is too slow

2009-03-11 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

On Jaunty Alpha 5, The partition editor step takes too much time to show/load,
I'm not sure how much time it took but definitely more than 5 minutes, I had 3
HDDs attached each with a total of 14 partitions or so.
The problem is that 5 minutes is too much to wait in-front of a non-responsing
application, I had to leave the computer and do something else then came back
later, I see this as a major disappointment for a new user.

Same goes for undoing changes inside the partition editor, it takes too
much time to undo, probably re-scans the changed partitions only but
still, takes a 2-3 minutes.

I have a 6600 GT card and I'm using intrepid with no problems, I used
180 at first but I downgraded to 177 later because I experienced a bug
with glyph rendering that happens with pre-Geforce 8 cards.

[Bug 337830] Re: [Jaunty] Slow transfer rate writing to automounted usb drives

2009-03-09 Thread Diaa Sami
I've tried with Jaunty alpha 5, once with its default kernel and then tried
each of the additional 2 kernels that you specified and it's the same.
HDD - Flash is always significantly slower(23-24s vs 15-16s in Windows)
Flash - HDD is almost unaffected(5-6s vs 6s in Windows)

** Description changed:

- When I installed mdadm with the command sudo apt-get install mdadm,
- Ubuntu Intrepid installed citadel-common and its associated packages. I
- know what Citadel is, so I let it continue, but I was rather puzzled why
- mdadm would install the Citadel server. In any case, here's the cli
- output:
+ In Intrepid, apt-get installs package recommends automatically, sometimes
this leads to unneeded software being installed but it's the safest bet.
+ In case of mdadm, citadel-common and other packages are installed as they are
included in mdadm recommends.
+
+ This can be solved by appending --no-install-recommends to apt-get

[Bug 337830] [NEW] [Jaunty] Slow transfer rate writing to automounted usb drives

2009-03-04 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

This is not a new bug but this report is against one of the latest
development releases and should help pinpoint the bug.

When writing to usb devices, a flash drive in my case, performance is
around 50% of that of Windows using the same hardware, when mounting the
device manually(as root), performance goes back to normal.

I've performed some non-scientific experiments to help find the problem
and its characteristics, you can find the results below and the log
files requested attached.

Copying a 147 MB file from the PC(NTFS partition) to a 4GB USB
drive(FAT32 partition):

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-02-28 Thread Diaa Sami
I confirm this on amd64 machine with ubuntu 8.10 with latest updates
 installed.
It is really disappointing to see a bug this critical has not been fixed for
 this long
a time. My disappointment apart, if somebody an find a work around for this,
 it
 will be greatly useful.

Mounting drives manually fixes this problem for me, it's tedious I know
but fixes the problem.

To mount a drive manually, identify its name by executing
sudo sfdisk -ls -uM
which lists all drives connected, their sizes and types, the execute a command
similar to the following
sudo mount device_name empty_folder
where device_name is the device name you identified using the previous
command and empty_folder is the path of an empty folder where the drive will
be mounted, if it's NTFS, I think you'll need to use 'mount.ntfs-3g' instead of
'mount'

Example:
$ sudo sfdisk -ls -uM
/dev/sda: 244198584

Disk /dev/sda: 30401 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track
Units = mebibytes of 1048576 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0

Device Boot Start EndMiB#blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 0+ 12291- 12292- 125868967 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 17602+ 120001- 102399- 1048562557 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 120001+ 238472- 118472- 121314847+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda4 0 - 0 00 Empty
/dev/sda5 120001+ 140482- 20482- 20972826 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 140482+ 191681- 51200- 52428096 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 237445+ 238472- 1028- 1052226 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda8 191972+ 227812- 35841- 367004617 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sdb: 625131864

so I pick /dev/sda6 and create a folder /mnt/tmp then execute
sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt/tmp

note: Before removing the device you need to execute
sudo umount device_name
or
sudo umount folder_name

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-01-31 Thread Diaa Sami
I'd like to add my own benchmark on Kubuntu Intrepid, hoping it'd help
I did it on 26/1/09 with a fully upgraded intrepid and I'm running the 32-it
server kernel and KDE 4.2 btw.

Copying a 144 MB file to 3 usb devices

My USB1 card reader(pretty old)
automounted: 100 seconds(around 1.5 MB/s)
manually mounted: 96.7 seconds(around 1.6 MB/s)

A slightly newer mp3 player
automounted: 60 seconds(around 2.5 MB/s)
manually mounted: 54 seconds(around 2.8 MB/s)

A newer sandisk 4G flash drive
automounted: 23.7 seconds(around 6.4 MB/s)
manually mounted: 17.9 seconds(around 8.4 MB/s)

Fortunately the difference isn't very big(10-30%)... but there shouldn't
be any.

[Bug 298144] [NEW] Periodic input freezes

2008-11-14 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

I'm using the latest Opera in the repos(9.27) on the current latest
Ubuntu(tried both Intrepid Hardy) and I'm facing a very annoying bug, while
running Opera I get periodic input freezes/stalls which are not equally spaced,
each lasts around 10-20 seconds, note that these freezes block all input(mouse
and keyboard) and affect all GUI apps not only Opera.
During these freezes, the mouse moves but no response happens(toolbar buttons
are not highlighted, etc) and clicks are completely ignored, keyboard events
are ignored as well, It happens regardless Opera is the active window or not
but usually happens more when it's active.
I don't use SCIM or other input methods.
I've tried running Opera using the following command-line but it's the same:
opera -nolirc -nomail -disableinputmethods -debugkeyboard -debugxerror
I checked X logs but I don't see anything wrong(but I'm no pro).

The problem happens with the latest Opera(9.62) version as well.

Some guys were generous enough to help me with some suggestions at the
opera.linux mailing list but unfortunately none solved the problem, see
http://groups.google.com/group/opera.linux/browse_thread/thread/bb176bbc30c30a7b

note that I have another machine(a laptop) that has a similar software
configuration but doesn't suffer from the problem.

I have an Nvidia 9800 GT card and I'm using the proprietary driver from
the repos(177.80)

dual-core Desktop, let alone the other findings I mentioned.

[Bug 192573] Re: plays all sounds fragmentary on alsa backend.

2008-09-21 Thread Diaa Sami
I'm not trying to spam you but I got more info:
the default /etc/openalrc that comes with Ubutntu 8.04 contains the following:
(define devices '(alsa))
(define alsa-out-device default)

It's the last line that causes problems and creating a ~/.openalrc
overrides these setting completely, /etc/openalrc is not used anymore,
if your ~/.openalrc is empty or contains anything other than the 2 lines
above, you shouldn't have any problems.

Well, this turns out to be an OpenAL - Alsa problem, it happens on my

[Bug 192573] Re: plays all sounds fragmentary on alsa backend.

2008-09-20 Thread Diaa Sami
I faced this problem a couple of days ago and did some investigation about it,
here are my conclusions:
1- This bug has nothing to do with ogg or vorbis
2- It only happens when there's no ~/.openalrc(I haven't tried anything with
/etc/openalrc), creating an empty ~/.openalrc avoids any problem.

I developed a small minimal program with only openal and alut as dependencies
to reproduce it, here's how to reproduce the bug:
- Make sure you have no ~/.openalrc
- Use play, aplay or paplay to listen to how /usr/share/sounds/login.wav sounds
when played correctly.
- Run the attached program and you'll hear significant clicks and gaps, in
addition to the sound being faster than it actually is.
- Create an empty ~/.openalrc by running 'touch ~/.openalrc' and run the
attached program again, it'll work properly.

The source code uses alut to do initialization and plays
/usr/share/sounds/login.wav by default which I assume to exist on all
Ubuntu variants.

[Bug 192573] Re: plays all sounds fragmentary on alsa backend.

2008-09-20 Thread Diaa Sami
After more investigation and examining the source-code, I found out that when
~/.openalrc exists but is empty, oss is used but when it's not alsa is used.
Why this happens?
When ~/.openalrc exists but is empty, openal uses the default device which is
oss.
When ~/.openalrc doesn't exist, /etc/openalrc is used, which specifies the
default device as alsa, so alsa is used.

I think that when a user config file exists but doesn't specify
something, the value in the global config file should be used but
obviously this isn't what happens here.

[Bug 248248] [NEW] Calling dcop krfb-instance MainApplication-Interface quit crashes

2008-07-13 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

krfb 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu1

Running
dcop krfb-instance MainApplication-Interface quit
crashes although this should be the standard method to exit the application
using a command

To reproduce the bug do the following:
With krfb installed and enabled, connect remotely using any VNC client.
On the host, run the following command
dcop `dcop|grep krfb` MainApplication-Interface quit

According to the documentation
http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdenetwork/krfb/dcop.html this is a valid
command, and should exit the application but it crashes(segmentation
fault) and I get the KDE crash dialogbox.

You can find the backtrace displayed in the KDE crash handler attached,
unfortunately it has a lot of no debugging symbols found entries but
there are some valid entries in the end.

[Bug 243841] [NEW] abnormally slow writing to usb flash drive

2008-06-28 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

I'm using Kubuntu 3.5.9 fully updated.

2 weeks ago, my USB2 flash drive(actually a card-reader + an MMC) used
to work properly, reading/writing at almost 8 Mb/s, after some recent
upgrades, not sure which, the writing speed decreased to something in
the range 32-50 KB/s which is extremely slow, and doesn't even mean it's
working at USB1 speed.

The same is happening with my laptop which has almost the same software
configuration.

Note that writing works properly on Windows

I'm ready to provide any information.

[Bug 207157] Re: dbus does not start automatically in Hardy

2008-06-13 Thread Diaa Sami
I'd like to mention that I faced a lot of problems because the dbus address env
variable wasn't defined, my setup is as follows:
I installed Ubuntu Gutsy on my machine then I upgraded to Hardy, everything was
going fine then I switched to KDE and made it the default, note that I had
dbus-x11 already installed, this is when I started getting problems, I get
random pauses in mplayer and an error message on totem startup in addition to a
significant slowdown when showing GTK file dialogs, later I figured out all
these are related to D-BUS, when I checked mplayer output I found that the
random pauses are in sync with the following error message:
Message: Failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon
and the error message on totem startup was:
Unable to activate plugin Media Player Keys
A search on the web showed that this is related in someway or another to D-BUS

All of these problems in addition to the significant slowdown when
showing GTK file dialogs disappeared after using the solution by Pat
Double

[Bug 239085] [NEW] Double clicking a path button in Gtk file dialog in kde

2008-06-10 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu hardy heron final with KDE3 installed
libgtk2.0-0: 2.12.9-3ubuntu4
kdesktop: 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu7.2

Step to reproduce the bug:
In KDE, Open the file dialog in any GTK application(say gedit), regardless of
the location in the file system, double-click on the last button in the path
bar which should represent the current folder .

What was expected:
Either nothing should happen or the contents of the current folder should be
refreshed.

What happened instead:
Each item in the current folder is listed twice.

I was able to reproduce the bug consistently on 2 machines, I tried the
same sequence in gnome but it works properly.

Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
