[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow
I confirm this on amd64 machine with ubuntu 8.10 with latest updates installed. It is really disappointing to see a bug this critical has not been fixed for this long a time. My disappointment apart, if somebody an find a work around for this, it will be greatly useful. Mounting drives manually fixes this problem for me, it's tedious I know but fixes the problem. To mount a drive manually, identify its name by executing sudo sfdisk -ls -uM which lists all drives connected, their sizes and types, the execute a command similar to the following sudo mount device_name empty_folder where device_name is the device name you identified using the previous command and empty_folder is the path of an empty folder where the drive will be mounted, if it's NTFS, I think you'll need to use 'mount.ntfs-3g' instead of 'mount' Example: $ sudo sfdisk -ls -uM /dev/sda: 244198584 Disk /dev/sda: 30401 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track Units = mebibytes of 1048576 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0 Device Boot Start EndMiB#blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 0+ 12291- 12292- 125868967 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda2 17602+ 120001- 102399- 1048562557 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda3 120001+ 238472- 118472- 121314847+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda4 0 - 0 00 Empty /dev/sda5 120001+ 140482- 20482- 20972826 83 Linux /dev/sda6 140482+ 191681- 51200- 52428096 83 Linux /dev/sda7 237445+ 238472- 1028- 1052226 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda8 191972+ 227812- 35841- 367004617 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sdb: 625131864 so I pick /dev/sda6 and create a folder /mnt/tmp then execute sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt/tmp note: Before removing the device you need to execute sudo umount device_name or sudo umount folder_name You can find the official longer guide at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB -- file transfers on USB disk are very slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197762 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 298144] [NEW] Periodic input freezes
Public bug reported: I'm using the latest Opera in the repos(9.27) on the current latest Ubuntu(tried both Intrepid Hardy) and I'm facing a very annoying bug, while running Opera I get periodic input freezes/stalls which are not equally spaced, each lasts around 10-20 seconds, note that these freezes block all input(mouse and keyboard) and affect all GUI apps not only Opera. During these freezes, the mouse moves but no response happens(toolbar buttons are not highlighted, etc) and clicks are completely ignored, keyboard events are ignored as well, It happens regardless Opera is the active window or not but usually happens more when it's active. I don't use SCIM or other input methods. I've tried running Opera using the following command-line but it's the same: opera -nolirc -nomail -disableinputmethods -debugkeyboard -debugxerror I checked X logs but I don't see anything wrong(but I'm no pro). The problem happens with the latest Opera(9.62) version as well. Some guys were generous enough to help me with some suggestions at the opera.linux mailing list but unfortunately none solved the problem, see http://groups.google.com/group/opera.linux/browse_thread/thread/bb176bbc30c30a7b note that I have another machine(a laptop) that has a similar software configuration but doesn't suffer from the problem. [Bug 192573] Re: plays all sounds fragmentary on alsa backend.
I faced this problem a couple of days ago and did some investigation about it, here are my conclusions: 1- This bug has nothing to do with ogg or vorbis 2- It only happens when there's no ~/.openalrc(I haven't tried anything with /etc/openalrc), creating an empty ~/.openalrc avoids any problem. I developed a small minimal program with only openal and alut as dependencies to reproduce it, here's how to reproduce the bug: - Make sure you have no ~/.openalrc - Use play, aplay or paplay to listen to how /usr/share/sounds/login.wav sounds when played correctly. - Run the attached program and you'll hear significant clicks and gaps, in addition to the sound being faster than it actually is. - Create an empty ~/.openalrc by running 'touch ~/.openalrc' and run the attached program again, it'll work properly. The source code uses alut to do initialization and plays /usr/share/sounds/login.wav by default which I assume to exist on all Ubuntu variants. ** Attachment added: A minimal application to reproduce the problem. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17783525/openal_problem.zip -- plays all sounds fragmentary on alsa backend. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192573 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 192573] Re: plays all sounds fragmentary on alsa backend.
After more investigation and examining the source-code, I found out that when ~/.openalrc exists but is empty, oss is used but when it's not alsa is used. Why this happens? When ~/.openalrc exists but is empty, openal uses the default device which is oss. When ~/.openalrc doesn't exist, /etc/openalrc is used, which specifies the default device as alsa, so alsa is used. I think that when a user config file exists but doesn't specify something, the value in the global config file should be used but obviously this isn't what happens here. -- plays all sounds fragmentary on alsa backend. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192573 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 234265] Re: E:Index file type '.0-3' is not supported
I want to add that everything worked normally after I got this error. As for the output of $ sudo apt-get install -f it's Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: libmono-addins-gui0.2-cil libpth20 libsnmp15 ttf-sil-gentium sqlite libotr2 libsvga1 libkbluetooth0 texlive-common libgtkhtml3.16-cil libndesk-dbus1.0-cil texlive-base-bin libbrlapi0.5 libmono-addins0.2-cil python-imaging python-qt4-dbus libflickrnet2.1.5-cil libnm-glib0 dctrl-tools libsigc++-1.2-5c2 libmono-sqlite2.0-cil libdbus-qt-1-1c2 libgpgme11 libndesk-dbus-glib1.0-cil libgsl0ldbl sqlite3 libtracker-gtk0 texlive-doc-base tex-common libgtkhtml3.14-19 o3read Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Which is normal I think. Another thing to mention is that I get an error message frequently after using synaptic, it says E: The package cache file is corrupted and then synaptic exits immediately, but after that everything works fine. -- E:Index file type '.0-3' is not supported https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234265 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
