Same problem Mythbuntu (Xubuntu) 11.04 AMD64.
A work around to get going without HAL polling:
Edit (as su): 
/etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/hal-polling.conf
from: 
CONTROL_HAL_POLLING="auto"
to: 
CONTROL_HAL_POLLING="0"
then:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure laptop-mode-tools
