[Bug 492115] Re: [i965gm] black screen after xorg upgrade to 1:7.4+3ubuntu10

2009-12-10 Thread Don Mullis
It's not a bug that misconfiguring the touchpad black-screens Ubuntu?
Is that as user-friendly as Ubuntu aims to be?

[Bug 492115] Re: [i965gm] black screen after xorg upgrade to 1:7.4+3ubuntu10

2009-12-09 Thread Don Mullis
The synaptics.fdi is a hack I found on the web. Reviewing `man 4 synaptics`
now, I
see some of the datatypes specified in the .fdi are wrong for the named fields.

When I correct the types, the X screen comes live. So maybe some part of
the X stack has become less tolerant of bad .fdi data?

Hmm, screen live again after removing the attached
xorg-disable-synaptics-touchpad-3.patch,
then running:

   apt-get --reinstall install xorg xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-all
xserver-xorg-video-all

Guess I'll have to find another way to disable the touchpad ...

[Bug 404692] [NEW] firefox-3.5 installation brings down network

2009-07-25 Thread Don Mullis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Description:Ubuntu 9.04

$ apt-cache policy firefox-3.5
firefox-3.5:

I did
 aptitude install firefox-3.5
and casually hit return return when asked about removing packages.

Result was that network went down.
After some debugging, I was able to work around this, by individually
installing the following:
libnm-glib0_0.7.1~rc4.1.cf199a964-0ubuntu2_i386.deb
libnm-util1_0.7.1~rc4.1.cf199a964-0ubuntu2_i386.deb

[Bug 317724] [NEW] /lib/modules/*/* dirs searched in non-determinate order

2009-01-15 Thread Don Mullis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: module-init-tools

Ubuntu 8.10

 apt-cache policy module-init-tools
module-init-tools:
  Installed: 3.3-pre11-4ubuntu16
  Candidate: 3.3-pre11-4ubuntu16
  Version table:
 *** 3.3-pre11-4ubuntu16 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I copied a driver out of /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.27/, created a trivial
makefile for it:
obj-m += modulename.o
then built and installed it:
make V=1 -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd`
sudo make V=1 -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd` modules_install
sudo depmod

The module gets installed under /lib/modules/*/extra/.
On some systems, depmod sees the new extra/ driver, but on others, it sees
the old driver under kernel/. The difference is filesystem order within the
directory,
as exposed by `ls -1f`. The fix is to configure depmod to always search extra/
_before_ kernel/. Patch attached.

** Affects: module-init-tools (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 123696] Re: dependency problem on Kubuntu

2007-11-11 Thread Don Mullis
VPN Connections didn't show up for me either. The workaround that did
work for me was to drop all the GUI tools, and use pon/pptp/pppd
instead. This web page was very helpful:
http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-diagnosis.phtml .

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-13 Thread Don Mullis
An alternative to the 99-hdd-spin-fix.sh fix is to install and enable the
package laptop-mode-tools,
then customize /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf, setting

CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT=1

[Bug 136783] Re: not using whole widescreen

2007-09-08 Thread Don Mullis
KDE on Kubuntu may offer a clue.
`xrandr` output is:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 1280
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right)
LVDS connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 287mm x 180mm
   1280x800 60.0*+ 60.0
   1280x768 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x60060.3
   640x48059.9
TMDS-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right)
TV connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 30.0*
   800x60030.0
   848x48030.0
   640x48030.0

But KDE's System_Settings-MonitorDisplay GUI offers a choice of sizes
640x480, 848x480, 800x600, or 1024x768.
So KDE is seeing the sizes for TV output, not for the laptop screen (LVDS).

Tried using xrandr to disable the TV output, without success. Anyone know how
the TV-output-specific info is getting into
Gnome/KDE?
