[Bug 496093] Re: [lucid] rt2860 frequently fails to connect to mixed mode WPA/WPA2 secured wireless networks

2010-05-04 Thread Dries Harnie
** Description changed:

- The rt2800sta module in the lucid kernel has failed to connect to my
- wireless network (which uses WPA2) 8 out of 10 times i've tried to
- connect to it, while never having any problems with unsecured networks.
- karmic's module worked flawlessly, however.
+ The rt2860sta module, included with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04) cannot connect
to mixed WPA/WPA2 networks.
+ This driver is used in most EeePCs.
+ This issue is fixed in the 2.6.33 kernel, unfortunately this kernel is not
yet available in Lucid.

the iwlist output shows that it's working driver-wise. Maybe something you
changed in your networking setup inadvertently?
Have you tried booting from a livecd to see if you get any networks there? If
so, this might not be the bug you're looking for.

@Ricardo: I have the same output, an EeePC 1000H, and your patch makes
mixed WPA/WPA2 networks accessible to me.

@HaroldAling: You might be suffering from something else. Do you have some kind
of radio killing enabled?
Because I have a 1000H as well and I could still *see* and *connect to*

2010-04-22 Thread Dries Harnie
Confirming that Ricardo's backported kernel works for my EEE 1000H.

Since it looks like this won't get fixed in time for the release, is it
possible to put Ricardo's kernel on the .iso, somewhere out of the way?
At least the release notes can direct people to install that, giving them a
chance to download updates later.

[Bug 326155] Re: quick search focus not automatic on starting Synaptic

Nigel: I downloaded the debian package to see if the patch applies, but
according to this debian bugreport (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-

I see no reason why the ubuntu patch shouldn't apply, though.

[Bug 339187] Re: mixer_applet2 often gets in 100% cpu use scenerio

2009-07-26 Thread Dries Harnie
I just wrote up a description of the bug upstream.

Short version:
The ALSA plugin for the GST framework that mixer_applet uses, still looks at
the old device nodes for the ALSA mixer. These nodes are deleted upon suspend
(or hibernate) but the ALSA plugin is unaware of this. the poll() function used
returns immediately with an error code instead of properly blocking, which
causes the mixer_applet to use 100% CPU.

So it's an GST bug, not a gnome-applets one.

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic nowadays, and wireless works as it should out

My EEE 1000HD also suffers from that.
I looked at the kernel.org changelogs, and found that this was fixed in git
commit 508f711090e06477081fd94cb9298b1b14dda9ff. [1]

I apt-get'ted the source for linux-image-2.6.31-2-generic, applied this
patch, compiled the kernel into a package and installed it. Booting with
that kernel gives me back the missing volume controls and gives me
decent volume levels.

So, the final 2.6.31 kernel will have this patch, but the impatient can
either do as I did. :)

Alternatively, if you want to compile a kernel and don't use the
headphone output you can add "model=basic" to the "options
snd-hda-intel" line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. A reboot should
give you decent volume levels. When the fix arrives in the ubuntu
package you can remove the "model=basic" again to go back to
autoprobing.

Attached is a new patch that takes dynamic WEP and EAP in account also.
I wasn't able to test it because i don't have such an access point,
though.

The previous patch already addressed WEP and WPA dialogs, which I think
are most common.

[Bug 195737] Re: Set "open" animation to glide 2, not glide 1

2009-06-25 Thread Dries Harnie
Attached is a patch to change the default animation for open from "Glide
1" to "Glide 2". I noticed that an earlier patch reset the open behavior
from Zoom to Glide 1.

This patch has to be applied after that one (01-animation-
defaults.patch), hence the name.

This patch has been tested on my desktop (Jaunty) and the default
behavior is "Glide 2", but only for new users, which is normal.

I'm having it tested on a Karmic box but that will take a while..

Did you remove the ubuntu-supplied driver from Jaunty?

What you described is what happens when an unpatched driver tries to
connect to a WPA(2) AP with mixed TKIP / AES encryption. Also note that
DKMS might be interfering with your module, so remove the rt2860-dkms
package and the kernel module, and then try compiling and installing the
patched 2.1.1.0 module. Also reboot after compiling the module, just to make
sure.

Hope that helps,

2009-04-27 Thread Dries Harnie
Just tested it in the airport wireless network i mentioned. It works
there too! No response from ralink, though.

Bryan: You don't have to make a full-blown .deb, you could hack
array.org's dkms packages, or even just provide a pre-built rt2860sta.ko
with instructions where to put it.

I'm wondering how we can alert the ubuntu kernel team of this patch. If
they include it in their build it's good too.

[Bug 367504] Re: Gnome-panel turns invisible

2009-04-26 Thread Dries Harnie
We talked some more and he found steps to reproduce it!

1) start xine
2) turn off the window borders (hit 'b')
3) quit xine
4) borders should disappear

starting xine with the -B flag also triggers it.

Starting xine without the B flag or quitting xine with borders enabled
brings the panel instantly back.

This doesn't explain the random events, but can at least help isolate
the buggy program.

[Bug 339891] Re: [Jaunty] wireless rt2860 not connecting to WPA

2009-04-26 Thread Dries Harnie
Bryan: Thanks for the write-up and testing it!

Some remarks though:

You can apply the patch with "patch -p1 < /path/to/file.path" if you are
inside the base directory for the driver (DPO_RT2860_LinuxSTA_V2.1.0.0
in your case)

The wpa_supplicant stuff is indeed not necessary as NetworkManager does
this on the fly for you.

Finally: you might have to take the interface offline and unload the
current version before installing the new one:

$ sudo ifconfig ra0 down
$ sudo rmmod rt2860sta
$ sudo mv /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/rt2860sta.ko
/tmp # just in case it's still there

You can also do "sudo make install" instead of steps 8 and 9 as follows:
(in the source directory)
$ sudo make install
$ sudo modprobe rt2860sta
$ sudo ifconfig ra0 up

Hope that helps, time for breakfast :)

[Bug 339891] Re: [Jaunty] wireless rt2860 not connecting to WPA

2009-04-25 Thread Dries Harnie
I installed a wireless router today and found I couldn't connect to it
with my new Jaunty install. I had a similar issue at the university with
a network of Airport Extreme stations.

I tried the 2.1.1.0 version on the web site but that didn't help.

I decided to compare the 1.7.1.1 and 1.8.0.0 versions and found a place where
they didn't quite finish refactoring; I fixed it, reloaded my module, and it
worked!
I had to remove the "official" driver from
/lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/rt2860sta.ko
before my new driver was seen.

Can anyone verify these patches work? I made one for 1.8.0.0, but it
also works for 2.1.1.0. You'll have to compile your own version of the
drivers and disable the ubuntu-supplied one as shown above. They work
for me and I can now connect to my wireless at home without issues. Yay!

Hope it works for you guys too. :)

[Bug 289629] [NEW] brasero cannot write disks with the standard driver

2008-10-26 Thread Dries Harnie
Public bug reported:

I tried the "copy CD/DVD" option in brasero on my new intrepid ibex
installation.
The reading went fine, but the writing fails immediately with an error.

I tried the same command as brasero reports in the log view and that doesn't
work.
I have to add "--driver=generic-mmc-raw" to the cdrdao arguments to write CDs,
apparently.
I looked through the brasero source code and couldn't find a way to add this
option to the commandline.

Is it possible to override the standard driver from within brasero
somehow?

The cdrdao man page suggests it's possible to set this in ~/.cdrdao or
/etc/cdrdao.conf.
Putting
 write_driver: "generic-mmc-raw"
in ~/.cdrdao made brasero behave as expected.

It would be nice (but probably not achievable) to auto-detect this.
Perhaps a "try another driver?" dialog?

[Bug 240752] [NEW] Installing pango-graphite corrupts text in gvim and other apps

2008-06-17 Thread Dries Harnie
Public bug reported:

I installed a new font yesterday (ttf-gentium) and it suggested pango-graphite.
It looked like it did something useful so I included it.
However, after installing it my font rendering has been acting up: numbers are
now always rendered in a times new roman-esque font, even though the
surrounding text is monospace. Even worse, the font display on Gvim is totally
garbled!

Uninstalling pango-graphite fixes the problem and rendering reverts to
how it used to be.

See attached screenshots for illustration: The numbers issue is clearly
visible in gedit-after.png, and gvim corruption is shown in gvim-
after.png.

I'm running Ubuntu hardy with the latest patches.

** Affects: pango-graphite (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
