[Bug 1580692] Re: Dell latitude e6520 display freezes must reboot

2017-01-15 Thread Edward Cherlin
I have seen several remedies proposed for this bug, each of which seems
to work for some people and not others.

I am running Ubuntu 16.10. I had the mouse problem recurring every few
minutes, with the cursor moving normally but unable to click on
anything. Sometimes I could click in one window and not another.
Sometimes I could not click in any window, but the toolbar menu worked.

I also have Windows installed on this computer. The bug never occurs in
Windows.

Upgrade BIOS to A05: No effect on the bug on my computer.

Remove deprecated video driver: No effect on the bug on my computer.

Install most recent version of non-free Nvidia driver, 367.57 0ubuntu3:
Fixes bug on my computer almost completely.

Workarounds:

Switch console ctrl-alt-f1 and back ctrl-alt-f7. Mouse usually resumes
normal action.

Switch to Guest account and back using toolbar menu. Mouse usually
resumes normal action.

This Etoys bug was reported as SQ-1126 Cannot display Etoys maximized;
cannot restore when unmaximizing. There is a workaround.

http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-1126

According to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/scratch/+bug/1025013 removing
the "-xshm" option solves this.

I created a new user. When I logged into the new account, I got
exactly the same results.

unity --reset

results in the same error.

Neither Compiz-Config Settings Manager nor Launcher and Menus has any
effect on the launcher behavior. I can activate it only in the upper
left corner, even though both programs are set to disallow the corner
and use the left edge.

As I wrote earlier, currently the launcher hides, but when I set it to
open with the mouse at the left border, it doesn't.

Trying your suggestion, however, results in the error

Yes. When I changed the settings in ccsm at the time, it had no effect
on the behavior of the launcher. When I tried it again just now, it
informed my of a conflict with the plug-in Desktop Wall, and invited
me to disable that setting. However, I still cannot turn on Left
reveal. The setting appears to take in ccsm, but nothing happens on
the desktop.

It isn't happening in Natty, so I assume that something else got fixed
that removed the problem. Perhaps we can close the bug.

[Bug 731133] Re: turtleart crashes on start

2011-05-22 Thread Edward Cherlin
The Sugar TurtleArt 98.1 package does not include tapalette.py, an
essential Python library. TurtleArt thus fails to start, with a log
message saying that tapallette cannot be imported.

When I extract tapalette.py from a later version of Turtle Blocks and
install it in /usr/share/pyshared/sugar/graphics, this error message
goes away, and instead I get, in org.laptop.TurtleArtActivity-1.log

[Bug 785977] [NEW] Character set submenus do not appear

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04
Unity 2D
Firefox 4.0.1+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.11.04.2

When I click on View-->Character Sets, most of the submenus fail to
appear, including Autodetect, each of the regional submenus under More,

More information: When I select Ubuntu at login, I get the behavior
described. When I select Unity 2D, however, the Launcher does hide.
However, I cannot change what triggers unhiding, even though there is a
utility for just that purpose, to switch between moving the mouse to the
left edge of the screen, or the top left corner.

[Bug 777535] [NEW] Launcher does not hide

2011-05-04 Thread Edward Cherlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Unity Launcher does not auto-hide at startup (bug #734005) or at any
other time. This began at installation of Natty Narwhal, the first time
I started it up. I am unable to find any setting I can change to get
the Launcher to hide. Contrary to the information in the Help, the
Launcher does not hide when an application window contacts it. The app
window slides under the Launcher. I do not know which package is
involved.

[Bug 669272] [NEW] Graphics artifacts in planarity

2010-10-31 Thread Edward Cherlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gplanarity

Ubuntu 10.10 Meerkat
gplanarity 16723-1

Normally gplanarity displays blue points outlined in black, and gray
lines connecting the points. I have been getting various extra gray
areas, usually triangles but sometimes spurious lines in gray on white
or white on gray. Example attached with several triangles. The spurious
markings change on almost every move.

[Bug 660594] [NEW] gplanarity runs very slowly

2010-10-14 Thread Edward Cherlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gplanarity

Source package: 16723-1
Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

gplanarity usually is very responsive, but now it takes about ten
seconds to respond to clicking a dot representing a graph node, and
another ten seconds for moving a dot. I am on level 361. There is
nothing obvious in the current game file (attached) to suggest the
cause.

The problem does not occur when I start a new game as a different user.

This problem started when I upgraded to Maverick.

[Bug 90918] Re: Desktop-Effects Bug. Left Mouse Click doesn't work.

2010-10-08 Thread Edward Cherlin
I get this frequently, now several times a day. Certain uses of the left
mouse button stop working, but not all. Which uses fail is not
predictable. When I first got it, Ctl-click worked for most uses. Now
that has no effect.

Many times the mouse button stops working when I have made half of a
text selection, just a starting point. Then even with the mouse button
up, moving the mouse just moves the other end of the selection around. I
can usually move the starting point of the selection with the arrow and
other keys. There was a time when left-clicking produced the grabbing
hand for click-and-drag, as with Super-click. No more. Sometimes the
cursor changes shape normally between text, pointer, and pointing hand
(for URLs) and sometimes not.

Workaround, up to a point: Key combinations. Tab to select buttons or
menu options, Return to activate. Ctl-Alt-Tab to switch between apps in
different workspaces. Alt-F1 to get to toolbar menus (sometimes). Ctl-
Alt-Del works for shutting down most of the time. When it doesn't I get
a Terminal from the Accessories menu, if possible and use

sudo halt

I have tried CompizConfig settings manager. Apparently I used to have
that problem, but now I have a different one.

I have just now turned off Visual Effects. We shall see.

[Bug 601219] [NEW] Sugar package files installed in wrong directory

2010-07-02 Thread Edward Cherlin
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Sugar activities are supposed to be installed in
/usr/share/sugar/activities. Some packages direct their files to be
installed in /usr/share/activities, where they are invisible to sugar-
emulator. The packages affected are

sugar-flipsticks-activity 1-0ubuntu1
sugar-jigsawpuzzle-activity 3-0ubuntu1
sugar-logviewer-activity 6-0ubuntu1
sugar-memorize-activity 26-0ubuntu1
sugar-pollbuilder-activity 17-0ubuntu1
sugar-sliderpuzzle-activity 5-0ubuntu1

Symlinking makes the activities visible, and most of them then work. I
will report the crashes of Slider Puzzle and Jigsaw Puzzle, and the
inablity to send logs from Log Viewer, elsewhere.

[Bug 365200] Re: Mouse clicks not registered

2009-11-11 Thread Edward Cherlin
In my case, it is only left clicks that don't work. I usually get this
while editing text on the Gmail or Daily Kos Web sites. I will have some
text partially selected with click and drag, but I cannot click to
finish the selection, nor can I left click anywhere else, including
toobars, scroll bars, any other text box, other applications, and so on.
I can change the starting point of the selection with the cursor keys.
The right click menus continue to work.

A partial workaround is to use the keyboard to copy what I am working on
elsewhere (ctl-a, ctl-c, move to an editor, ctl-v) and then close
Fireox. I can use the mouse to position the selection on a right-click
menu, and press Return to make the selection. This is enough to let me
save what I am doing and stop Firefox with Alt-F4. Sometimes the mouse
starts to behave normally after that, and sometimes I have to reboot
with ctl-alt-del, position cursor on shutdown or restart, return.

If that were true, there would be no reason to allow users to select

Find a Unicode block for which gucharmap does not display characters.
Install a font for that block. Observe that the block is now filled,
regardless of which font is selected.

[Bug 364777] [NEW] gucharmap shows characters not in selected font

2009-04-21 Thread Edward Cherlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gucharmap

Feature request:

Currently, I can select a font and a character range (by script or by
Unicode block) but I see a glyph for each character supported in the
fonts I have installed, whether or not it is in the selected font. What
I want to see some of the time is just the characters in the selected
font, perhaps with an indication of which other characters _can_ be
displayed using other installed fonts.

I would like to be able to toggle display of characters not in the
currently selected font in gucharmap, either on the View menu or on the
font menu, perhaps identified as "All". This would enable me to see
either the total coverage of installed fonts, or the coverage of a
selected font, as appropriate to my need. In particular, it would allow
me to find fonts covering a Unicode block or the characters required for
some application, and let others know which fonts to install for those
purposes.

[Bug 220573] Re: usb stick does not automount in Ubuntu 8.04 RC

2008-09-24 Thread Edward Cherlin
I had a variation of the same problem when doing a clean install of
Ubuntu 8.04 on my Linux Certified Laptop (after a messed-up upgrade).
The first stick I inserted wouldn't mount, but the second one would (as
long as the first was still in), as /dev/sdc1. I found a line in
/etc/fstab for /dev/sdb as a CD-ROM drive, commented it out, and now the
first USB stick automounts as /dev/sdb1 with no trouble. In fact, I can
mount two USB sticks at once.

[Bug 263173] [NEW] Sugar Browse fails on startup

2008-08-30 Thread Edward Cherlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sugar-web-activity

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04
Browse installed from package sugar-web-activity 86-0ubuntu-1

When I click on the Browse icon to start it, it indicates that it is
starting, and then goes away rather than opening.

The log file, org.laptop.WebActivity-1.log, says

ImportError: libxul.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory

In fact, /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.0.1/libxul.so is present. Adding a
symlink from /usr/lib/libxul.so fixes this problem, but then,

ImportError: libxpcom.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file
or directory

In fact, /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.0.1/libxpcom.so is present. Adding a
symlink from /usr/lib/libxpcom.so fixes this problem, but then,

ImportError: libpyxpcom.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file
or directory

In fact, /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.0.1/libpyxpcom.so is present. Adding a
symlink from /usr/lib/libpyxpcom.so fixes this problem, but then,

ImportError: libsqlite3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file
or directory

In fact, /usr/lib/sqlite3.0.8.6.so is present. Adding a symlink from
/usr/lib/sqlite3.so fixes this problem, but then,

ImportError: libmozjs.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file
or directory

In fact, /usr/lib/mozjs.so is present. Adding a symlink from
/usr/lib/mozjs.so fixes this problem.

But then, we get serious problems. From org.laptop.WebActivity-9.log:

[Bug 219358] Re: Package has unresolved dependancies

2008-08-30 Thread Edward Cherlin
You can get python-abiword by following the advice at
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Sugar_on_Ubuntu_Linux#Option_3_-_Hardy_packages.

You need to add the repository lines

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/sugar/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/sugar/ubuntu hardy main

to your /etc/apt/sources.list.

However, after seemingly successful installation Write and Poll both
fail due to missing libraries.

[Bug 252386] [NEW] Firefox shuts down randomly

2008-07-27 Thread Edward Cherlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

All other browsers test in this configuration have the same problem, so
it is not specifially a Firefox bug.

Occasionally Firefox recovers during typing, but not on page requests.

[Bug 250196] Re: Firefox shuts down randomly

2008-07-23 Thread Edward Cherlin
Shutdowns are becoming more frequent, and are occurring during typing in
data fields, not just page access.

Also, Firefox frequently becomes unresponsive, and the window colors
desaturate, as in [Bug 230922] "Firefox grays out and crashes" from May.
Firefox occasionally recovers from this state in less than a second, but
if it persists, I have to kill the session.

It turns out that all the other browsers I tried (all latest Ubuntu) are
also crashing or shutting down on accessing Web pages and in some cases
at other random moments. I tried installing Firefox 2, but it is no
better.

Firefox 2,
Galeon,
Konqueror,
Midori
