[Bug 1770698] Re: mysql-server-5.5 install fails without bsdutils

2018-05-14 Thread Edwin Grubbs
I didn't realize that codeanywhere had removed essential packages from
their image, which apt warns the user against removal. I have reported
the issue to codeanywhere.

These two essential packages were removed.
bsdutils
e2fsprogs

These two required packages were removed.

2018-05-11 Thread Edwin Grubbs
Public bug reported:

I was installing mysql-server-5.5 on the Ubuntu 14.04 image that

[Bug 1439910] Re: Non-interactive mode fails at EULA

2015-10-08 Thread Edwin Grubbs
You can configure debconf to accept the eula before you run "apt-get
install":

echo ttf-mscorefonts-installer msttcorefonts/accepted-mscorefonts-eula
select true | sudo debconf-set-selections

I determined the right variable to set by looking in this file after
ttf-mscorefonts-installer was installed:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/ttf-mscorefonts-installer.postinst

[Bug 1031718] Re: Obscure error messages caused by ubuntu patch

2013-12-03 Thread Edwin Grubbs
A simple workaround is to make libjpeg-turbo load before the application with
the error has a change to change users:
 LD_PRELOAD=libjpeg.so.8 /usr/bin/myapplication
OR
 export LD_PRELOAD=libjpeg.so.8

[Bug 688335] Re: superfluous __init__.py generates import errors

2013-02-13 Thread Edwin Grubbs
This can also cause pam-motd to stop updating /var/run/motd. The /etc
/update-motd.d/50-landscape-sysinfo script calls /usr/bin/landscape-
sysinfo which has an ImportError that is caught silently and returns a
non-zero exit code.

[Bug 661654] Re: pam_motd should log the error when run-parts fails

2013-02-13 Thread Edwin Grubbs
This broke for me because /etc/update-motd.d/50-landscape-sysinfo which
calls /usr/bin/landscape-sysinfo has an ImportError that is caught
silently.

The ImportError is caused by a weird bug with python namespaces, which
occurs because I have python-zope.cachedescriptors installed in addition
to python-zope.interface.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zope.interface/+bug/688335

You can fix this error by removing /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-
packages/zope/__init__.py

I am having the same problem. If I try to finish the installation with
"dropbox start -i" it also freezes at 99%. Here is the traceback I get
after I enter CTRL-C once I'm tired of waiting on it. It is also using
100% of the cpu, even though downloading has stalled. BTW

There is a while-loop at line 534, which will never stop unless it gets
a StopIteration exception. I modified the download_file_chunk() function
with the attached diff to cause it stop the iteration if no new data is
being read. This prevented the infinite loop, but now I am getting an
exception when it tries to verify the gpg signature.

[Bug 1016683] [NEW] universal access visual alert not working

[Bug 1009531] [NEW] configuring grub-pc install devices did not work

2012-06-06 Thread Edwin Grubbs
Public bug reported:

When I updated grub-pc to version 1.99-21ubuntu3.1 using Update Manager,
it asked me to configure the "GRUB install devices". I selected one of
the drives, and I clicked "Forward". It then asked "Continue without
installing GRUB?" I made that box was unchecked, and clicked "Forward".
It took me back to the list of devices that grub could be installed on.
I kept going in a loop like this until I gave up and checked the
"Continue without installing GRUB?" box.

After the update completed, I ran
 dpkg-reconfigure --frontend=gnome grub-pc
and it had no problem.

I tried running
 dpkg-reconfigure --frontend=gnome grub-pc
to see if I could recreate the problem, but it worked also.

If you are reporting a bug with ubuntu, here are directions.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

If you are reporting a bug for software tracked by launchpad.net but you are
not running on ubuntu, just search for the project name here:

[Bug 579040] Re: ThinkPad W510 only recognizes audio input for Plantronics .Audio 995 usb headset

2010-06-07 Thread Edwin Grubbs
Here are my results with this mainline kernel:
Linux fatso 2.6.35-999-generic #201006021335 SMP Wed Jun 2 12:39:19 UTC
2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Additional hardware shows up in the Sound Preferences before the
Plantronics USB audio device is plugged in. This appears to be because
the snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi module is loaded when I boot this kernel.
High Definition Audio Controller
1 Output
Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output

Normally, I just see:
Internal Audio
1 Output/1 Input
Analog Stereo Duplex

After I plug in the Plantronics USB device, I see:
Plantronics Wireless Audio
1 Input
Analog Mono Input

When I unplug the Plantronics USB device, the Sound Preferences does not
remove Plantronics from the Hardware tab as with the normal Lucid
2.6.32-22 kernel.

I have attached the section of the kern.log when I plugged in and
unplugged the Plantronics usb device.

[Bug 571697] Re: bash-completion is not working any more

2010-05-14 Thread Edwin Grubbs
bash-completion does not work for psql in 10.04. The
/etc/bash_completion.d/postgresql even breaks filename completion. For
example, if I type "psql dbname < path/to/something/" and hit TAB it
doesn't work. However, if I remove the /etc/bash_completion.d/postgresql
file and start a new shell, I can then tab complete filenames.

I have bash-completion 1:1.1-3ubuntu2 installed.

The environmental variables are set up correctly, and the tab completion
of command line options and filenames works for other commands.

$ set | grep BASH_COMPLETION
BASH_COMPLETION=/etc/bash_completion
BASH_COMPLETION_COMPAT_DIR=/etc/bash_completion.d
BASH_COMPLETION_DIR=/etc/bash_completion.d
xspec=$( sed -ne '/^complete .*[]'${1##*/}'\([  ]\|$\)/{p;q;}'

[Bug 579040] [NEW] ThinkPad W510 only recognizes audio input for Plantronics .Audio 995 usb headset

2010-05-11 Thread Edwin Grubbs
Public bug reported:

I am resubmitting this, since I didn't have the usb device plugged in
when I ran ubuntu-bug to file bug 579035, so it was missing the
information.

My Plantronics .Audio 995 headset works fine on my old MacBook Pro under
Lucid, but on my ThinkPad W510 only recognizes it for audio input, or at
least the Hardware tab in PulseAudio only says "1 Input" for Plantronics
Wireless Audio.

Can we get rid of these deprecation messages from the console? They are
very disconcerting when you are trying to debug problems booting.

[Bug 378334] Re: gnome-volume-control: USB headset volume buttons affect laptop speakers, not headset speakers

2010-03-30 Thread Edwin Grubbs
The volume control used to work fine under Karmic, but upgrading to the
Lucid beta broke it. If I plug in my Logitech USB headset, the audio
switches to the headset, but the volume control continues to affect the
Internal Audio device. When I go to the Sound Preferences, the Output
shows the Internal Audio device is selected. When I click on USB Headset
in the Sound Preferences, the volume control starts working for it
again. If I unplug and replug my USB headset, the volume control once
again remains on the Internal Audio device although the audio goes to
the USB headset.

I ran "apt-get dist-upgrade" again and it finished without an error, but
it did not add kernel 2.6.32-17-generic to grub. I updated grub/menu.lst
manually, but when it boots it never gets past the splash screen with
the five dots.

[Bug 546262] Re: lucid upgrade fails with AttributeError: 'webkit.WebView' object has no attribute 'get_load_status'

2010-03-24 Thread Edwin Grubbs
I tried to re-run the upgrade, but it said that I needed to run "sudo apt-get
install -f". When I tried running that, it said that it couldn't lock
/var/lib/dpkg. Apparently, this app is continually calling dpkg which is
acquiring the lock.
  /usr/bin/python /tmp/tmpfwS_Z8/lucid

It was definitely upgrading packages. Now it has stopped calling dpkg,
and it is using 100% cpu.

2009-06-26 Thread Edwin Grubbs
I have the exact same issue with taking screenshots in Jaunty with multiple
monitors, and I have found a workaround.
If I align the top edge of all my monitors, the black bar no longer appears in
screenshots of a window or an area of the screen.

I have also opened this bug in gnome's bugtracker.

[Bug 319827] [NEW] packages hidden in synaptic unless organized by origin

2009-01-21 Thread Edwin Grubbs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

After adding this repository, synaptic would not show the moonlight-
plugin-mozilla package if I viewed the packages by Section. However, for
some reason, the moonlight-plugin-mozilla package shows up in synaptic
if I select to view the packages by "Origin" with the buttons in the
bottom left corner. Then, I have to select ppa.launchpad.net/main in the
top left corner. Oddly, the package won't show up in the search results,
so I actually have to navigate the package list manually.

Adding the missing gpg keys for the repository using apt-key has no
effect on whether the packages show up normally.

pytz.timezone() should also catch the IOError and throw a
pytz.UnknownTimeZoneError even though it is very unlikely to occur if
pytz.all_timezones_set is clean, but that also depends on whether they
are preloaded or if all_timezones_set is just verified with

exist with os.path.isfile only takes 4 milliseconds.

[Bug 88772] Re: X/radeon in feisty breaks ppc/ati external dvi/vga output

2007-10-29 Thread Edwin Grubbs
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 88741 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/88741

The "Screen and Graphics Preferences" and the "Screen Resolution
Preferences" in gnome's System menu erroneously showed the only
resolution options as 303Hz and 304Hz.

After I changed the monitor model in "Screen and Graphics Preferences", I
correctly got the refresh rate options 60Hz, 65Hz, 70Hz, 75Hz, 85Hz, and it
would let me test the refresh rates, but the "OK" button didn't actually make
the change. 70Hz was the highest rate that didn't have the pincushion
distortion.

If I re-opened "Screen and Graphics Preferences", it would show the correct
ViewSonic P95f+ monitor, but it would only show 303Hz and 304Hz as options.

"Screen and Graphics Preferences" added the modlines to the xorg.conf. When I
restarted xorg, it was running at 1600x1200, although the virtual desktop size
was 2048x1536. I was able to change the resolution in "Screen and Graphics
Preferences" from 2048x1536 to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Interestingly, the "Screen and Graphics Preferences" removed these lines from
the Seciont "Device"
  Option "CRT2HSync" "30-110"
  Option "CRT2VRefresh" "50-160"

There must be something else that "Screen and Graphics Preferences" is doing
differently than dpkg-reconfigure that gets it to work. Since the "Screen and
Graphics Preferences" xorg.conf now works, I was worried that the
xorg.conf from dpkg-reconfigure only didn't work because it had a slightly
lower horizontal and vertical sync rate. However, when I used these configs it
still didn't work:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 30-110
VertRefresh 50-160
EndSection

After looking at the diffs between the configs, I figured that the following
change is what fixed the xorg.conf without resorting to CRT2HSync and
CRT2VRefresh.

 Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE]"
+ Boardname "ati"
+ Busid "PCI:2:0:0"
Driver "ati"
+ Screen 0
+ Option "MergedFB" "off"
- BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
 EndSection

It turns out that
Option "MergedFB" "off"
fixes the issue with the xorg.conf generated by debconf.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

The radeon driver would ignore the following settings in my xorg.conf, so it
thought the monitor could only support 640x480 resolution.
HorizSync 30.0 - 110.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0

I fixed the problem by adding these two options to Section "Device":
Option "CRT2HSync" "30-110"
Option "CRT2VRefresh" "50-160"

I also had to remove some of the really high resolution/refresh rates
that were added by displayconfig-gtk when I selected my monitor as
Viewsonic P95f+ to stop this error.

  Fatal server error:
  Caught signal 11. Server aborting

I can now run my monitor at [EMAIL PROTECTED] but it would be nice if it
worked without having to specify CRT2HSync and CRT2VRefresh manually.
+
+ I didn't have this problem at all in Feisty. I am currently running Gutsy

2007-09-24 Thread Edwin Grubbs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

The radeon driver would ignore the following settings in my xorg.conf, so it
thought the monitor could only support 640x480 resolution.
  HorizSync 30.0 - 110.0
  VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0

I fixed the problem by adding these two options to Section "Device":
  Option "CRT2HSync" "30-110"
  Option "CRT2VRefresh" "50-160"

I also had to remove some of the really high resolution/refresh rates
that were added by displayconfig-gtk when I selected my monitor as
Viewsonic P95f+ to stop this error.

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

I can now run my monitor at [EMAIL PROTECTED] but it would be nice if it
worked without having to specify CRT2HSync and CRT2VRefresh manually.

I didn't have this problem at all in Feisty. I am currently running Gutsy with:
  xserver-xorg 1:7.2-5ubuntu9
  xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.193-1ubuntu1

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
