[Bug 411322] Re: desktop icon position of symbolic links are not restored
Hi lutterworth, for the time being, you could manage to install the patch by compiling yourself the package: just follow the Link Andreas Allacher posted on comment #23 (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=593809). As far as I know, that's the way to go right now. On bugzilla.gnome.org, Takehiko Abe posted the instruction for his patch on comment #15. You can use them directly from your Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 (I slightly modified them here to adapt the commands): 1. sudo apt-get source libglib2.0-0 2. sudo apt-get build-dep libglib2.0-0 3. find the file in the directories you just created, precisely look for: gio/glocalfileinfo.c 4. modify the file following Takehiko's instructions on comment #6, removing the lines with a - and adding the lines fine a +. 5. sudo dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc 6. install all the .deb packages built (that's what I did, but I guess you could just install libglib2.0-0) Since you just overwrote the same packages that already are in your distribution repositories, two things will happen: when you restart, your symbolic links will be right were you put them; as soon as you update your package list, your system will want to reinstall the previous version of the packages. This can be avoided by putting on hold these packages so that they don't get updated: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptGet/Howto This should cover it. I really hope so: there are certainly better ways to do this, but that's just all I got for now. -- desktop icon position of symbolic links are not restored https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/411322 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 286489] Re: Intrepid Ibex 2.6.27-7: r8169 driver does not work with Realtek RTL8111B gigabit ethernet chip in Ubuntu 8.10 BETA
Yes Patrick, it looks like it can be closed: no more problems here as well, starting with 2.6.29. Everything is working right out of the box. Hey Patrick, thanks for your tests. Did you use live DVDs for 64bit architecture? I'm thinking about compiling the module myself, at this point, even though I already tried when 8.10 was still in Alpha and didn't succeed. There were some hints and links on another and older bug report, the one about RTL8168/8111C that refers mainly to older Ubuntu versions. Anyway, I'll post anything good that comes out of it. [Bug 289077] [NEW] Intrepid Beta: EeePC 901 ethernet does not work at all
Public bug reported: I did a 8.10 install with the latest build on 10.23.08 and couldn't make the ethernet onboard chip work. An lspci | grep Ethernet outputs this: 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. L1 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev b0) I get the Auth 0 connected from network-manager, IP, DNS etc are all assigned, any attempt to browse the Internet or to update fails. I'm on ADSL provided by an Italian company named Fastweb. I don't know if this may be related in some way to the fact that Fastweb isa a sort of gigantic intranet and does not give me a public IP. The same thing happens with my desktop computer (see bug 286489 here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted- modules/+bug/286489) but only on one of the two Ethernet adapters (RTLB), which gets all assigned but still doesn't work, while the other Ethernet card on the desktop computer works perfectly. Any suggestion is really much appreciated! [Bug 212497] Re: r8169 driver does not work with Realtek RTL8111C gigabit ethernet chip in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
To NTolerance: So far I have never experienced any problem with the Hardy kernel or its updates (my system is up-to-date), but since other people have had issues I can't say that for sure. In my opinion though since your connectivity was already working I'd try to update, I don't think anyone here experienced a regression over something working from the beginning, but I may be wrong, check that out... [Bug 286489] [NEW] Intrepid Ibex 2.6.27-7: r8169 driver does not work with Realtek RTL8111B gigabit ethernet chip in Ubuntu 8.10 BETA
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-common Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch) Release:8.10 linux-restricted-modules-common: Installato: 2.6.27-7.12 Candidato: 2.6.27-7.12 Tabella versione: *** 2.6.27-7.12 0 500 http://it.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/restricted Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status I'd like to report that the Realtek Ethernet onboard card RTL8111B is not working on Intrepid Ibex 64bit. The module that seems to cause the problem is most certainly r8169, which is loaded by default in my system: if blacklisted, the card driver simply doesn't get loaded and network-manager doesn't list it anymore. The card never worked, not even on live cd, while the exact same card always worked on Hardy 32 and 64 out of the box (I currently have Hardy 64bit as well, it's a multi-boot box). It seems though that many people had the same problems with older kernel versions, although not me. Similar reports addressing this kind of issue are in fact these: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/258882 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/141343 and especially this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/212497 which is the one I've been writing on, but I thought it wasn't clear enough that the problem persists still on 8.10, so I opened this bug report. Feel free to close it or mark it as whatever you think it's best if it doesn't need to exist. Hopefully someone can address this. Or at least point me in the right direction... Apparently it is just like you say, Kevin: it works on some computers but not on others. I can say me and Patrick Schueller have the exact same problem: ok on Hardy (live, fresh install, up-to-date, just ok all the way) and never working on Intrepid, not after a fresh installation, neither after the updates (last done this morning). I'll try to run an Intrepid live cd just to see if I get the same problem. I'm just wondering if the kernel-modules updates also update the drivers or not, since I'm a real newbie about this software level. The real weird thing is that clicking on the info on network-manager shows that everything gets assigned: IP, submask, gateway, DNSs, everything... [Bug 212497] Re: r8169 driver does not work with Realtek RTL8111C gigabit ethernet chip in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
Hello, this seems to be the right place for my report, so... I have a problem with my Realtek 8111B on-board Ethernet card. I'm running Intrepid Ibex Beta but the problem has been going on since my first install (Alpha 5). The onboard Ethernet card gets detected as a Realtek 8169 model (which is obviously not the case), the kernel has thus this module loaded, and blacklisting it simply gets the card undetected - it disappears from network-manager list. This is the output of lspci | grep Ethernet: 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01) 05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10) Consider that the second card, RTL-8139, is a normal PCI that works fine and that the module loaded for the RTL8111/8168B (not working card) is r8169: it manages to get an IP assigned via DHCP to the card but the connection is down. I've looked around and found out that this same issue was also present in earlier Hardy testing releases, and that it could be solved by downloading the proper driver and compiling it for the kernel while disabling the wrong one (I hope I didn't say something stupid here). After that, though, it must have been solved in a more definitive way, since I never experimented that: when I installed Hardy everything worked fine right from the start. I tried this procedure here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=755002#4 But there are too many differences for my level of expertise to make it work and, other than that, the same problem would appear again (correct me if I'm wrong) the moment one upgrades the kernel. If anyone has an idea and wants me to test it I'm willing to help get the problem solved! Thanks a lot everybody for your work!
